    Well, I absolutely love the idea of genetic engineering, I think it's the next step to evolution *but* it should be available to everyone, primarily to treat genetic disorders and prevent diseases. Also I know there would be sooo many people against it, doing protest, especially religious people.

    • @Jim-so3zm
      @Jim-so3zm 6 лет назад +18

      Adrian Gutz I'm not religious but I'm uncomfortable with the idea being used for anything other than editing out serious, life limiting/life threatening diseases. Otherwise it will just be the next step in eugenics and will create further societal divides.

    Now when _I_ think of genetic engineering, I envision something that gives the grown child who is... "only" 6'1" the ability to reach 6'4" if it's what _he_ wants. Take the parents out of the equation, because it's not really their decision to _make._ I envision the ability to modify _existing_ genetic strains.

    • @LemonsRage
      @LemonsRage 6 лет назад +16

      yes that it exectly what I would want. I mean fuck my child. ok it would be cool if he/she would be gentic engineered to be vastly superior to me but what do I have from that ?
      A peacefull mind that someone else will have all that fun in his/her life?
      I want to change my genes !

    • @vaprin2019
      @vaprin2019 6 лет назад +6

      That's waaaaay beyond anything we have ever even considered plausible. You would have to do so much more than just modify one or two cells. You would literally have to redesign the DNA of every single cell in your body for which he have not even come close to doing. The reason why genetic engineering is possible is because we can "filter" out unfertilized eggs that don't have the desired gene combination. However, our ability modify the DNA of an egg to a significant extent is not quite satisfactory but we're very close.

    • @vaprin2019
      @vaprin2019 6 лет назад +3

      I should also point out that even if you did somehow redesign every piece of DNA in your body to make you 6'4'' you would have very abnormal growths and probably die because your body has a bunch of useless flesh where your neck or spine should be and that useless flesh would include your brain lol. Of course, in the very very very far future things will be very different and it might become plausible then but that's so far away that even your grandchildren will probably die before something like that becomes possible.

    • @domaspaukstys
      @domaspaukstys 6 лет назад +1

      That would be a perfect scenario if we could GM adults, but we can't. At least for now. And, taking into account how much cells there's in human body and that most of them vary slightly in their genetic code (I've read some study that cells in our body's don't have exactly same genome, but I could be wrong on this one), I don't think we'll ever (or at least in foreseeable future) be able to modify genes beyond zygote.

    • @lazyperfectionist1
      @lazyperfectionist1 6 лет назад +8

      Yes. I realize that the concept I am describing is not feasible in the _near_ future. The concept being described in the video is _not_ "genetic engineering." It is "selective breeding," and when we begin to apply selective breeding to human beings, it is unquestionably, eugenics.
      Now a brief examination of 20th-century history shortly brings one face to face with the kinds of horrors that arise when human beings dare to venture into _that_ territory.
      So that which I conceptualize as "genetic engineering" may have _technical_ prohibitions, but that which I conceptualize as "selective breeding" has _ethical_ prohibitions.

  • @thezebraherd8275

    Saying genetic modification is the same as eugenics is like saying sacrficing people for a good harvest is the same as using fertilizer

    I don't think the genetic gap between wealthy and poor will last.
    The price of genetic sequencing has dropped so dramatically that it can only be compared to computers.
    The first sequenced human gene cost $3billion. Now it costs ~1,000$.
    It will not be reserved for the rich for the same reason computers weren't.

    • @sarenareth689

      Well you could argue that a human with an IQ of 140 is "more perfect" or "better" than a human with an IQ of 100, and where all their other features are exactly the same. But then a same human with an IQ of 150 is even more perfect, and 160 even more etc. You can increase this till infinity, and infinite IQ is impossible, therefore perfect as in "the very best" doesn't exist.
      Regardless, a human with 0 genetic deficiencies, 0 diseases, the most attractive body, the fastest reaction speed, the highest intelligence, the best memory etc. would be perfect in our eyes. These are not subjective properties, as possessing a lesser degree of any of these properties will definitely not make you more perfect.
      Als, imo saying "imperfect is the best kind of perfect" is an emotional statement not based on actual metrics. Nobody is saying that a human who has better properties than another human has also more right to live or is "worth more", or elitist nonsense like that. We should also be honest with ourselves and admit that some people are just smarter, stronger or faster than us, and there's nothing wrong with that.

  • @josephguter7252
    @josephguter7252 6 лет назад +1

    What I think should happen is a whole human genetic upgrade as well as the ability to remove diseases before birth. If every human alive got the same genetic modifications such as improved eyesight, more intelligence, etc. that would remove the inherent inequality associated with making individual modifications to certain people.

      The way rich (and the greedy) mentality works this might be not as easy as we might think, its been 3 years and people are still worried that the rich will either make a monopoly out of gene editing or just be able to affort everything they want...

    • @KraftBrotHD
      @KraftBrotHD 6 лет назад +1

      There would be a way though... using Crispr/Cas9 and Gene Drive, you could design a set of enhancements and spread it using a Virus. That way you could bypass the cost of individual modification and also do it without having to debate reactionary idiots thinking that any amount of ethical qualms will stop rich people from modifying their children. Seriously though, this will come and no law will stop it. We will either have a select few with the connections and money to do it and deny everybody else from a fair competition, or we piss some religious folks off and establish long-term genetic equality (only talking about quantifiable traits like intelligence and strength here, no one wants billions of identical twins). The only problem is to find a geneticist willing to be the Ass who pushes the button. A real Lelouch if you will.

    Whenever we fully master genetic editing nobody will be left by the wayside. At that moment true 'suffering' will be over and 'abundance' will begin.
    If you are afraid that the powerful will grab and run with it, we will be almost powerless to stop them.
    So it's either abundance for everybody, or all out war. With the latter being an unlikely scenario, because the principles of genetic editing are already publicly known. And these hypothetical future techniques will probably be a new iteration of these techniques.

Ideally all would have it, but some is better than none. And if having a few enhanced humans around gives us a chance to solve (major problem here) then its a good thing.

      @drunkonlife. 6 лет назад

      I definitely understand you but think about the people that are born in a world where many change their child's aesthetics and yet your parents chose to keep you away from that... so you have "unfair, aysmmetric traits" in a world where almost everyone is aesthetically perfect. Wouldn't that just make the whole superficial level even more extreme? I understand that "beauty is subjective" might be annoying to hear but maybe it's exactly that what makes us human - yes, it might make us (from a societal perspective) "ugly" but it's what makes us real and we all have to learn to accept our body, as awful as it might seem. At the end of the day we are given this precious life to live and be and not to worry about our slightly too big nose. fuck people who try to deteriorate others with different traits, bcs let me tell you: being normal is boring. :)

      @andraskovacs6403 6 лет назад

      I see your point.If people will change traits of children.then the unchanged will be ugly in comparision.And even if you change the genes of adults,once a nose developed,the genes responsible for building it are already inactive.It won't "shrink" after the gene therapy,because the construction of that structure is already kind of finished.You will need tissue engineering for that,which requires surgery,not just injections that edit your genes.You need to remove tissue,and grow tissue,etc.Or maybe biomedical nanorobots will be able to move,shrink,modify or expand tissues thus making such surgeries non-invasive.Anyways the future promises a very rapidly growing technological trend,so who knows.
      I don't think your objection is good enough to stop all progress in genetic trait editing,because at the end,it is inescapable that technology will be able to provide us with the bodies we desire once in the future.Where you could look how you want.And why wouldn't someone look how they want ?

      Also many millionaires have already cloned themselves. I call them expensive babies, unless they have a specific fetish with raising a younger version of themselves or using them for spare parts. The technology to map the quadtrillions of possible synapses of a human brain doesn't exist, then there's the added complexity of each neuron having it's own DNA mutations which occurred randomly throughout the person's life influenced by literal thought excitation and environmental stimuli.
      Point being, the technology's been around for sometime now, it just not economical and as some have found out, economically dumb.

    What would I give to have a faster metabolism? I mean since I’m not able to resist eating a bag of chips for 5 seconds probably not that much
    What would I give to be a few inches taller? Nothing I think my height is fine.
    What would I give to be a bit more muscular? Some unused dumbbells that I never bothered to use.

    What I think will happen, is pretty much a summary of this video. What I hope will happen however, is awesome:
    As the gene-editing technology becomes available to the rich, they should invest in it, making it automatically more available over time. While this will take a long time, they should modify people with a poor genepool, to create a better world for all. We can rid the world of many diseases and birth-defects this way, while making the technology more accessable to less wealthy people. Once this tech is more available, more people use it, making it more and more available. Eventually, all bad parts of the genepool of humanity will be ridded and humanity will flourish like never before.
    But that's not going to happen. I think it will be more like what happened in Altered Carbon: The wealthy grow wealthier and stronger, while the poor become poorer and more and more people will have to live a terrible life. This saddens me.. Damnit humans.

    It would be nice to be able to have a child with no diseases that would effect them negatively, but I think mother nature can handle that, plus if it increases other deadly diseases that we may not even know about or decrease the babys chance of survival, I would pass on that opportunity.

  • @AnonymousFreakYT
    @AnonymousFreakYT 6 лет назад

    To me, the line would be that if you want to edit out a disease or quality-of-life defect, like poor eyesight, you have to have the genes changed in *yourself*. Only. No editing eggs/sperm/zygotes/etc. Only in-situ editing of your own genes, before having kids, so that your "fixed" genes are passed on the normal way.

    First of all, I don't understand why everyone thinks 6'4" is so great. It isn't a bad height, but in my opinion it is too tall. Most people I know that are 6'4" are really clumsy. I think average is just fine (5'7" to 6'2" for a fully developed male).
    Secondly, there is no one perfect human. It is very subjective, just like my opinion on height above and also like Second Thought pointed out in the video.

    Genetic engineering is essentially very precise positive eugenics. Regardless of how precise it is, it's a good thing for everyone.
    The question is how do you deal with the rest of the population that can still reintroduce "lower quality traits" back into the gene pool. The only solution is negative eugenics which will probably lead to extermination.

    But why only children? With retroviruses adults can do it as well, there's this hype with embryos and it'll happen early with those but what about adults? Are we doomed to be worse than the youth? Of course not, there are people looking how to cure aging and death in adults and that's very similar to changing an eye color (the latter is ironically more complex)

    This is definetly one of those things that should NOT be left to the free market to handle. Because of the incredible potential danger of gene editing this future industry should only be handled by a specialized government body that could closely test and regulate what modifications were allowed and also make sure that those modifications were available for the general public. Im talking about things like immunisation from diseases and the like. That is the only way to handle a technology such as this one!

    I look at it like Mars colonisation. Sure, the first people who get to do it will be the rich. But their purchases will be the backing needed to develop genetic engineering to the point where the general population could do it. Frankly, this same argument could be applied in a larger scale to 1at world countries developing tech that 3rd world nations can't afford.

    I even have a visual impairment and I don’t want genetic engineering. But, as I write this, wouldn’t things like eye surgery be similar, just after birth..? So modifications are preventative. It’s complicated.
    I just don’t see much good coming out of this. I mean, our medical technology has already prolonged our lives, but if we make it too good the earth will become over populated leading to wars for resources etc...
