Gives us a real opportunity to see how lenses and cameras perform before processing, as not everyone edits with such a heavy hand. Hope this trend continues. Great video Matt. I find Leicas lack of publicity around the new lenses almost smacking of embarrassment. Aside from one Italian photographer promoting the lenses there has been nothing I've seen. The price difference is astonishing for what appears to be a metal body and hood on the Leica versions. When I shot on Sony (which I never enjoyed) my favourite lens was the 55mm f1.8. So I'm more than interested in these panasonic offerings. Sure we love Leica and we accept there will be a premium on their products but this is obscene. The real value appears to be retained in their M lenses. The autofocus lenses just tank second hand. All the best, Dave

    There's actually a video out there comparing the 50/2 Leica and 50/1.8 Panasonic which showed that Leica performs better on sides and corners...although that may attribute to manufacturing tolerances and/or sample variations so one can infer that the price difference also partly went to better QC (but yeah most of it goes to Leica's profit margin)...as for the APO, you are paying extra for the Apochromatic lenses for better correction of CAs. this benefit would be apparent on close focus and wide-open with high-contrast subjects...less LoCA and veiling...also note that the APO variants can focus closer as well (35cm vs 45cm for the 50, 27cm vs 24cm for the 35).

    Hi Matt, I have recently bought the Leica 50mm Summicron ASPH, I also have Sigma L mount lenses and also the Leica SL 90mmAPO as well as previously owning the Panasonic 85mm f1.8. Interesting as your review is, what is not mentioned is that Leica have their own lens coating and colour science, this makes these lenses different no matter how much everyone wants to bag out Leica as copying either Sigma or Panasonic in this case. The Leica lenses have a look to them that the Sigma and Panasonic do not have, to my mind it is a much more pleasing look. The new Leica 50mm is super sharp with great colour and bokeh but even it is not up to the stellar quality of the 90mmAPO. You do get what you pay for. Thanks.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  Год назад

      Hi Bill thank you! I think there was a slide in the video mentioning the AquaDura Leica coating but I didn't cover it in much detail. Yes Leica add their "magic sauce" which should give you that extra 5% but for B&W work and once i've added a preset there is minimal difference. If you saw my 90APO video I agree that is stellar, no question. (If I had the cash I would buy the 50ASPH/35 ASPH but for my needs and occasional use of AF lenses the cheap Lumix works. (I still prefer M glass on my various bodies).

      @billgreen4514 Год назад +2

      @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Hi Matt, I know that you are a Leica user and you understand the differences in the lenses, I doubt that the difference is just an extra 5% however. My point is, I get fed up constantly hearing the "this is a Sigma lens design " or "this is a Panasonic lens design" from people who are mostly just angry that Leica lenses cost so much money. Yes they are very expensive and yes, you do get more quality from them than most of the other third party lenses give you but you do pay a lot more for them, this is no different from any luxury item be it watches or cars. You use what you use because it suits you and I respect that, at the end of the day let's all just go out and take photo's with whatever gear we choose to use and let others use what they choose to use without all the noise !

I was so disappointed with the AF on my SL2s (I shoot a lot of action (horses) ) that other than a Panasonic 70 -200 I haven`t invested in any full frame glass. I either use my existing M lenses or my CL lenses. Obviously there is the reduced pixel count with L glass but the primes are good and light and the 55-135 covers a useful range for my purposes.

      Thanks and sorry to hear it. You could try the SL2 + CL lenses so you have more MP. I have contacts that love this combo (though I can't comment on the AF speed) (Leica cameras are not the best for speeding horses, you could try to zone focus I guess).

    Great video, as always, Matt, although you may need to start calling yourself something other than Mr Leica moving forward. According to an interview with Peter Karbe (the Head of Optics at Leica) the new ASPH lens optical formula is actually based on the S lenses from Panasonic but they have improved and modified individual lens elements and coatings inside and then manufactured them by hand to much tighter tolerances, using metal as opposed to plastic materials. The net result is a heavier but more stable set of lenses, but as to whether that justifies the highly inflated prices is a matter of personal choice. I personally own the Panasonic S mount lenses, which I use with a Panasonic S5 as well as a Leica TL2 and CL (purchased partly on your recommendation - thanks), and they are great. They are held back only slightly by the now outdated contrast auto focus, but I'm assuming the upcoming Leica SL3 will have the new phase detect auto focus currently offered in the Panasonic S5ii. I'll look forward to your review of that. Keep up the great work.

      Thanks Gregg! Yes I keep find myself bashing Leica recently. I don't mean to I just try to support the best value offerings. Yes perhaps the name needs to change going forward (though the blog is 100% geared up around it since 2013). Thanks for your grear insight. That was my understanding but you're specifics are valuable so thanks. Sigma lenses feel nicer than Lumix but the LUmix ones can give nice photos. Yes interesting times for Leica AF with the S5ii release and SL3 to come.

    I am a big fan of the Lumix Prime Lenses, I currently own almost every single one of them (18,35,50 and 85), and currently using them on the S5iix. I also use it with the Leica CL, which will give me an awesome two camera + two lenses setup when travelling, which actually gives me 4 focal lengths in total, for example if i bring the 18 and 35 , I could put the 18 on the CL to get 28, and put the 35 on the CL to get 50, which will give me 18,28,35,and 50 of 24 megapixel goodness! I also noticed that the autofocus of these Lumix lenses feel much faster on the CL compared to any other L-Mount Lenses, including Leica's own APO/ TL APSC lenses, which is mind blowing given the lack of Phase Detect in the CL. I wonder if this was your conclusion as well?

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  11 месяцев назад +1

      Great stuff! Yes the lightweight plastic construction makes these lenses great on the CL. I've not used them together a huge amount as I normally shoot MF metal Voigtlander lenses (or Leica or vintage etc) but I agree with your setup for 2 FL from each lens. I've done this in the past and for weddings.

    I own a Leica SL-2s and a Lumix S5-II. The problem I have with the Panasonic 50/85 lenses is the color rendition. These look perfect on an S5, with beautiful summicron-like colors. However, on an SL-2s the Panasonic lenses give me an ugly brownish/purplish tint. For around a year I have been very impressed by the output from my Lumix S5, which originally came supplied with both the 20-60mm kit lens and 50mm f/1.8 model shown here. Earlier today, Amazon was selling the 35mm f/1.8 lens for £299, so I bought one. These lenses are optically very good, but Panasonic has also made enormous strides with its colours, which in the early days of micro four thirds looked just plain dull. For 35mm Sigma makes their 35mm f2 DG DN and than feels better made than Lumix S lenses and can probably easily match in terms of sharpness. See the Sigma 35mm video I did.

    I realise the video is really about comparing the two different Leica versions and the Panasonic. Therefore understandably no mention of Sigma. All of the Leica L mount lenses are too expensive and too big/heavy for me, so I only shoot Sigma. I have become not a fan of Panasonic having owned a couple of bodies and a couple of lenses in the past.

    Is there really anyone who needs the added 1% of sharpness in the corners for ±3k extra? I always wonder apart from enthousiasts if there are professional photographers that can make pictures with this that they couldn't a couple of years ago with older lenses. Even though it's nice to know that the offer is there if you really want it :)

    Same as the Leica 24-70 f/2.8 which is a modified Sigma design. Not a bad lens, surely. And the same will be true with these Lumix clones. I'm just really disappointed that Leica now has almost as many copied lenses in it's portfolio for the L mount as original designs. And even when you add up all of them ... Sigma has more lenses for the L mount in the i-series alone, not to mention all the Art lenses on top.

  • @RobinParmar
    @RobinParmar Год назад +1

    The Lumix S lenses are amazing and give up no quality in real world shots. Leica go on about their magical fairy dust but the images from Panasonic have that special zing as well. OK they are plastic but metal doesn't make the lenses better. In a fully automatic lens the point is moot. (If we had an aperture ring and manual focus that would be a different matter. Still not worth the difference in cash, however.)
    Personally I would prefer much smaller lenses. That's my main beef with today's designs. Sigma i-series get there somewhat but at cost of optical quality. When I compare to my Pentax-FA 43mm Limited the difference in size is hilarious.

      Thanks I like the smaller Sigma lenses and these cheaper Lumix lenses. Great images for the price.. though I still invest in M mount (and adapt them) as I want to be able to shoot film.

    These aren’t the same lens or a straight clone. It’s the same design and optical formula. Leica told me the elements are different. Ground ASPH vs moulded. Different coatings. And they’re using higher tolerances while made in Portugal, which pays EU wages. I wouldn’t say these are the same unlike the 100-400 which does appear to be a clone of the SIgma and made in the same place.

    Can anyone tell me if the Leica SL2-S is worth the upgrade over the SL type 601 or should I wait for the upcoming SL3?

    • @Christian_Kurz
      @Christian_Kurz Год назад +2

      I'd suggest wait for SL3 and its price. The SL2-S is fantastic but if you can wait and the price isn't too high, I would take the SL3, just because the phase detect AF will make it an even better camera. If the price is too high, you can still pick up an SL2-S.

      @@Christian_Kurz That’s what I’ll do then. I want to fix my GAS and I think an SL body that can be my long term camera with modern features can fix it. I would end up selling my SL type 601 and Olympus E-M1 Mark III kit to help fund an SL3. If it does end up having the M11 sensor which is very highly rated then I think I’ll end up going with the SL3. I don’t think it would be any more expensive than the M11 so it should be within my budget, especially if I sell those 2 cameras. My kit would end up being my Leica M10 and a SL3. 2 cameras I’ll know I’ll use and not have to be deciding what I’m going to use.
      Thanks for the feedback 🙏🏻
      For the time I’ll probably get a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 for my SL. I currently only have a Lumix S 50mm 1.8 and adapting my Leica M mount lenses.

      @Gynra Год назад

      I'm guessing, of course, but I think an SL-3 would have a 60 Mpx sensor (akin to what is in the M11). For myself, I'm hoping for an SL-3S with hybrid phase detect auto-focus and (if I'm lucky) a 30 Mpx sensor. That said, 24 Mpx would be fine for me, too, as I'm happy with the photos produced by my SL2-S.

    Leica 35mm 2.0 Summicron-SL Asph. $2195, Panasonic Lumix 35mm 1.8 $598, these Lenses looks identical with the same Lens designs, though more plastic in the Panasonic if you check the weight, so the Leica are too expensive (as always !). The price of the the 35mm Leica APO are outside of this world ! I do not like Lenses without aperture ring. If you get the Panasonic Lumix S5II $1998 or the Panasonic Lumix S5 $1498 (and NOT the Leica SL2-S $5195), you can have a LOT (well, there are not a lot of L-mount Lenses) of good Lenses ! THAT is why (one of the reasons) I have E-mount. The AF/MF switch on the Lumix are a great plus. If you do want the L-mount system and like the Leica brand, then get the "stealth" version Panasonic Lumix S5 IIX which are all black, get a Leica badge on ebay and you are ready to go ! AND HOLD your breath, an APO Lens on a 24 megapixels camera are overkill, you need to go 40+ megapixels to really see the difference.

    Good video Matt.
    Excellent explanation with the bang for your buck story.
    About the Leica store. Nice guys but they are not as geeky as you may believe and don't forget ...they run a Leica store which core business is selling Leica gear, they never reveal the truth.
    Were they need more than 2 hours to sugar coat those debatable lenses you more or less told the truth in 12 minutes.😂
    As stated in my comment on the Leica Store comment, how much of those lenses is still Leica ?

    People who were attracted to watch this video, like myself, were so due to its headline promising to give us definitive visual and text insights on the differences and similarities between the Leica and Lumix same focal length lenses. As we advanced watching it the more and more frustrated we become. We all couldn't care less about a Makina camera nor about the Leica Apo versions, nor about your teaching in Spain, nor about photos taken with APO lenses, nor about other past videos from you and even less about upcoming ones. All we care is to decide to buy the lighter and much cheaper Lumix lens (maybe the same lens in another badge) or spend 3k more to get the prestigious Leica model. In short, Mr. Leica. lol, your depictable video has NOT met in any way our interest. What's wrong with you?

You can return the one you don't like. This video only discusses the concept that both lenses are pretty much the same.
