This lens came with the S series as a kit lens at launch as an option, I cherish this lense over my other glass due to the versatility of lens across the board. Well spotted, agree with all you’ve said here. 👏
I keep coming back to this lens. I didn't think it would be as good as it is, especially for travel and at night on the S1 in particular. Anything at ISO 6400 is completely acceptable, especially in print. It's versatility trumps anything faster.
It’s my most used lens, followed by the Sigma 18-35. and I’ve got a lot. Sigma art 1.4 primes 24, 35, 40, 85 the 14-24 and 24-70 2.8, lumix 50mm, a kit of vintage Contax zeiss primes, canon 70-200 2.8, and a few other odds and ends. The 24-105 could replace all of those for 85% of shooting situations (even low light)
I use this one more than the 24-70mm S pro. I think that people shy away from it because of its F4. But honestly, the very few times I need something faster, I am more than okay with just changing the lens.
re: 24-105 vs 24-70 sigma. Turning up the key light will affect the colours. The lit up areas will seem more washed out, while where the keylight was not changed, colours will look darker.
I think this is a beautiful lens, but f4 for me who also films in low light situations I think I will opt for the sigma 24-70 better to have a pinch more aperture than a longer focal length
Great lens for the price, especially considering its is stabilized. That said, f4 is a bit slow if you're looking for an all around lens and you'll be shooting indoors. Especially when talking about the 6K Full Frame which strangely has worse low light performance than the regular 6K, I would still want something that opens up to at least a f2.8 or f2.
Thanks for your review! I just got a S5ii. I’m trying to decide between the 16-35 or the 24-104 as a first lens to record video on a once-in the lifetime trip. I’m leaning towards the 16-35, but I just don’t know.
If you are going to be doing a lot of traveling and walking etc, the 16-35 will be the one, it balances amazing on the S5 body. But if you are ok with a bigger lens then 24-105 will get you a lot more it's super versatile.
I have to say that Ive always been a prime lens shooter. wether gh5 or s5. on gh5 i have mighty 18-35 1.8 ( best all around lens in the world of video for consumers) And on s5 i have my sigma 50 1.4 + 85 1.8 ( panasonic ) +35 1.4 sigma art . And there is a really difference , but lately ive been following an olympic athlete on court with him . and I wanted to pick up a zoom for s5, naturally i wanted the 24-70 art from sigma. and then i sawn there was 28-70 from sigma ( 400 euros cheaper since I bought it used ) . I have to say best buy in a while . I travel lightly even my gimbal is really small and wouldnt have been able to handle the 24-70 instead of the 28 - 70. Lighter/smaller , ive shot 90% of the time . And I dont see a lot of people talking about this lens.
Good Stuff Bro. I use this lens everyday. I wish you had the 70-300 to give your insight on (love that one too). Incredible handheld shots for a Telephoto Lens.
Havent heard of a single person disappointed in this lens. Im more od a photo shooter starting out in video and this was my first/only L lens. Ill be looking to gran a 100-400 i think at the end of the year to complement it and maybe a vintage 50mm f2 for low light. I got it because i wanted a one lens setup for travel and this thing handles it all. Like you said, the dual IS with this lens is bananas. 105mm with e-stabe and it looks like a tripod shot and that's a guy with a familial tremor. It's like the hilux of lenses. It might not be the fastest or sexiest, but it will go anywhere and do anything you need.
The only thing that bothers me about this lens is the considerable distortion when shooting raw photos. It's very noticeable, and worse that the Sigma 24-105 for DSLR's. The Panasonic's lens correction data is built into the raw files, and if the raw processor can't access them, you have to manually correct every photo that shows distortion. There is no provision to load lens correction data into a processor because Panasonic do not provide it. Apart from this, it is an extremely useful and versatile lens.
I have Lumix S2x and 50mm 1.8 lens , so what is your opinion if i buy this lens as well , will it be fully enough both those lens for all scenarios in real world
I wanted to buy one used today, the inner lensed had fungi on it. I was shocked. It turned out the early models had lots of complaint of the fungi on inner lensed. But I'm really thinking on forgetting this - anyway amazing lens - due to the fact it's prone to fungi and go for a Sigma 28-105 f2.8.
Thank you for this video. The perfect lense is already im my bag. While checking some other lenses here I accidentally entered your channel. Thanks again, I buy I beer and cheers on you. Subscribed.
This lens was my workhorse for ultra low budget assignments for 2 years. Used it with Sigma fp. While it is very sharp lens with good colors, i was really disappointed of ugly distortion from 24 to 40mm and overall flat images. Focus pulling with this lens not great even in linear mode. But for low budget shoots it's ok and stabilization is good. As I remember, this lens is the only one native 24-105 zoom for L-mount, so no choice anyway. Btw, Sony 24-105/4 is much much better lens in all aspects excluding weak in-lens stabilization.
thank you for that video! Are you sure you can gyro stabilize the image well after shooting with a a lens that got internal stabilisation? I would think it would overcompensate and as the lens does not "talk" back to the camera or sending information to the gyro, it s hard to believe. But it would be great!
It’s a nice lens for sure but I wouldn’t exactly recommend it for BMCC 6K. Firstly some examples of this lens create a banding interference mounted on BMCC 6K (same as some 16-35 S Pro). It’s widely documented issue and B&H photo has a warning on the product page of 6KFF to warn of it. The focus by wire is absolutely unusable on BMCC 6K. If you try to do a small adjustment and turn the focus ring slowly, this doesn’t get registered at all. Focus won’t budge until you move it faster but than you are almost guaranteed to overshoot. It vignettes quite badly on the BMCC6K. Especially in full frame mode. Like others have mentioned ruined you can’t mix OIS with gyro. It won’t work. I like your reviews but this one feels a bit rushed and incomplete
Do you not have the obvious vignette problem using 24-105 on the BMCC 6K FF at 24mm open gate? Mine is unusable at wide focal lengths especially in open gate.
Great video. One thing you mentioned is that the camera can correct distortion on the S5ii. How can I enable that? I have been looking for this setting for awhile and haven’t been able to find it.
I looked at pdf's for the current manuals for the S1, S1H, S5ii and S5iix. There are menu settings to enable diffraction and vignetting compensation. There's a statement that the camera does color compensation for .jpgs and not for raw, but I couldn't find anything related to what I think in this case is called "Pin-cushion" or "Barrel" distortioin. When you import a raw photo into lightroom, you can apply a lens profile to correct that kind of distortion, but I don't know how you do that for a video in premier. The author (Gary) did saw that it was an issue for raw video, but it might be applied automatically to all non-raw 4K images.
If I ever will go from APSC to FF then it will be 2/2.8 zooms. FF should be your money workhorse so perfect autofocus, iso and bokeh. Clients just love that object separation. F4 zoom in terms of depth of field in FF is like 2.8 zooms on apsc. So if you are pro you need that big boys on your shoulder. If you are amateur or some "content creator" you can go apsc instead of ff with f4 zoooms.
@@bobbydragulescu8914 With talking head I used to shoot M4-3 with that effect already in mind before I even shot the A-roll. So it might be a last resort but it wasn't for me. I'm not saying it's the same thing... but it's actually incorrect to say that DOF can't be added in post, because it can be.
Not sure why you say the 24-105 isn't given proper attention. I'm sure it's the most popular L-mount lens above the kit lens and the 50mm f1.8 It's absolutely the most value for the money lens. I've used it for a few years and it does everything.
And S Pro Lens has amazing Micro Contrast and the image is just a bit more alive. The difference between the S Prime and the S Pro is visible in Cromatic Aberation :)
When first was out this lens came in at the same price point as a brand new Canon EF 24-105 f4 which I always thought was a mistake. The sigma 24-105 EF is even cheaper. Yes the L mount alliance blah blah. But It’s 999 now I think but it has always needed to be at least under 800 USD to be of any value.
I had that Problem as well, however I found out it was bad weather sealing and actually a mold problem there are a few long threads on reddit and other photo websites about it. I switched to the 24 - 70 Sigma.
Thanks for this video. Happily, I already have the 24-105 f4, and like the results I get from it quite a lot. By the way, I SIGNED UP AND PAID FOR YOUR VIDEO GUIDE, but when I logged in I couldn't get any of the presentations. Can you help me figure this out? thanks.
Absolutely, could you just drop me an email with your name @ gary.scaife@oliverbrian.co.uk. that way I can speak to you in privet and get you sorted, thanks.
Thanks for the quick response. I actually solver the matter, no problem. I think your videos are great. Direct and to the point. I'm enjoying working through the tutorial. I wish more people used the S5II/x. I fell in love with the S5, and Lumix cameras altogether. I only wish there focus peaking was better. The new Sony's are great with focus peaking, but that's not enough to make me switch. I still love shooting MF whenever possible and using dead lenses. It's much more inventive and creative. @@OBP_
Well lots of options open up if you use an adapter, but the problem is lack of reliability for AF. The Lumix 24-105 would smash the AF on the Canon by a country mile.
i am convinced that half the people who actually complain about breathing are just doing it as a flex to show that they know what it is!!! You see breathing in actualy big budget movies all the time. It is literally meaningless.
The 24-70 F2.8 is not stabilized, it weighs 300g more and the zoom range is too limited to meet multiple needs, however it is more qualitative. Its place is rather in a studio. It therefore makes sense to recommend the 24-105 F4 if you only have to have one lens, you will gain a lot in run and gun and in video (focal length, stabilization, weight), it also allows very close shots, and you can also use it in the studio without blushing, the shots are completely correct even if they have a little less sharpness than the 24-70. The 24-70 F2.8 is not very versatile, this should be a second purchase unless you only do studio.
But it gets twice as much light and it is twice faster. When you run and gun you usually do that at night. Or in dark places. I'm about to buy an S5 II and coming from Nikon APS-C I can say the difference in image quality and in light from my 35 1.8 compared to my 16-300. It's more crispy and way more lit. It handles light more easily. BTW these 35mm are so critical? When I need reach I usually want more. Recently I went on a boat ride in Vistula river by night. The one lens with f4 would drive me nuts of I wasn't able to do full night shots and videos. It's still gets half the light. And that's a lot.
@@georgemcr1802 Run and Gun means for me to travel light and to be able to deal with as many situations as possible without having to change the lens, it's all the time and not only at night. But even at night in a weakly lit street in the city, the opening of the F4 of 24-105 will not exceed ISO 6400, which gives very good results in the full frame. And on the other hand, the F2.8 opening in Fullframe is only friendly for large plans or isolate subjects, because if you film a group of people, zooming a little, the depth of field will be too much limited to have the whole group. Also, don't forget that stabilization of optics and its significantly lighter weight are very important advantages for hand -up shots. And if you notice that 105 mm is not enough, then 70 mm will be even less so. Furthermore, your comparison with your 16-300mm is not necessarily relevant. The 24-105mm is not the best but it is nevertheless very good, no one will criticize the quality of your shots. Of course, you will always find situations where another lens would be more appropriate, but with regard to the Run and Gun and the shooting of an event without knowing what will happen in the following seconds, 24-105 mm is a very good choice. I hesitated between 24-70 F2.8 and 24-105 F4 when buying my S5IIx, but optical stabilization, weight and greatest versatility oriented me around 24-105 and more than a year late, I don't regret it. The minimum opening of F4 to fullframe is much less embarrassing than in the lower formats and has never posed a problem for me. But of course, it all depends on your main use and I understand that other users have other requirements. If you know what you are going to film in advance and have time to change the lens between two sequences, you will probably prefer fixed focal lengths. Whatever your choice, welcome to Lumix, the color rendering is superb and the devices are robust (my first Lumix device is fourteen years old). Everything is fine with me.
The lumix 24-105 is an L-mount lens and cannot work worth with Sony cameras. That being said, Sony has its own 24-105 f/4 which is also a better lens than is given credit for. I was lucky enough to work for the St. Lawrence string quartet during the year of the great lockdown (helping them livestream). And this video is shot with each camera using it's corresponding 24-105/f4: An S1,S1H, and A7s3. I'll bet you'll have a hard time guessing which is which: youTube.com/watch?v=4jMEjcFRjVw&t=752s

I keep coming back to this lens. I didn't think it would be as good as it is, especially for travel and at night on the S1 in particular. Anything at ISO 6400 is completely acceptable, especially in print. It's versatility trumps anything faster.
Amazing reviews as always! What do you think of the lumix s pro 24-70mm f2.8 lens? About to buy one for s5ii
Did you get it? Why not the sigma one, also at 2.8
I did buy it and used it on my trip to dubai. I didn't get the sigma as I preferred the image quality (a little) from the s pro
Thank mate, its nice one heavy. One thing be nice a lens do 16 to 100. I like buy sigma 14 - 24 or 16 - 28mm f/2.8 for the gap
The Leica glass and coatings make it an S Pro lens. Hence certified by Leica
Sigma 24-70 2.8 is the most versatile lens there is in terms of practical focal range, sharpness and low light conditions, hands down.
But if you are ok with a bigger lens then 24-105 will get you a lot more it's super versatile.
is the Panasonic Lumix S 28-200mm f/4-7.1 MACRO O.I.S. Lens (Leica L) also recommended?
Hi, please test new A.I. stabilization for BM cameras in Resolve.
I have to say that Ive always been a prime lens shooter. wether gh5 or s5.
on gh5 i have mighty 18-35 1.8 ( best all around lens in the world of video for consumers)
And on s5 i have my sigma 50 1.4 + 85 1.8 ( panasonic ) +35 1.4 sigma art .
I'm not 100% sure, but I think the 24 -105 came out before the S pro lenses (50mm 1.4 and 24-70mm 2.8) so that's maybe why its not an S pro.
The S-Pro line are certified by Leica. That's the difference.
to me, the 24mm distortion is pretty pleasing
Agree! That's why I don't correct it in editing. I love lens when they show a bit of character
This video made me go buy this lens (well pushed me over the edge at least) what a great lens and great video 👊 🤓
👌👌👌
How do you combat the low light?
Don’t change the ISO and bring lighting equipment?
Many cameras has dual native ISO
I thought you couldn't use the OS as well as record gyro data on the black magic?
Either way, agreed about this lens, very underrated
you cannot mix lens IS and gyro stabilisation of Black Magic. The gyro data only work with lens IS off.
Have you used the lens with gyro? Resolve normally disables gyro if you activate lens stablization...
Exceptional Review! Thanks for the information and insights.
Been using it to shoot sports 💪🏽
Would you pick the lumix 24-105 over the sigma 24-70??
It's close but I would prefer the extra focal length and extra stabilisation of the 24 - 105.
You can always grade the color in post, but you can't add additional DOF. It's the Sigma for me!
You can actually, in a lot of situations. Da Vinci Resolve Magic Masks.
Sure, I suppose that's always an option, but it's more on the "last resort" side just to enhance the lens characteristics. @@photovideomusic
I think the only downside iwith this lens, is the fact the front element rotate... specially with CPL filters
I've heard this lens is also parfocal, is that true?
The best L mount lens is SL24-90.
can i use the Panasonic L mount lens on my sony fx5?
Not sure why you say the 24-105 isn't given proper attention. I'm sure it's the most popular L-mount lens above the kit lens and the 50mm f1.8
It's absolutely the most value for the money lens. I've used it for a few years and it does everything.
Any dust or flaking coats?
@@fredriksvard2603 nope
What does that mean? what kind of coat is that?@@fredriksvard2603
Would your course be good for someone's first camera being the S5II? Or does it assume a good amount of camera background?
I would say as long as you know the basics of how a camera works ISO, shutter speed, white balance etc. then you will be totally fine.
Idk about that dust sealing. Mine let in dust like crazy. Switched to primes.
@@OBP_
Following this because I'm also interested in the guide.
What about canon L 24-105 f/4 with ef adapter
Well lots of options open up if you use an adapter, but the problem is lack of reliability for AF. The Lumix 24-105 would smash the AF on the Canon by a country mile.
i am convinced that half the people who actually complain about breathing are just doing it as a flex to show that they know what it is!!! You see breathing in actualy big budget movies all the time. It is literally meaningless.
Sonys 24-105 f4.0 is also not high end (grey G)
I bought the panasonic L Mount lens for my lumix gh5 but couldnt mount, can you recommend any Adapter?
Buy an L mount to micro 4/3s adapted
Не знаю, я считаю что линза должна быть светосильной. F4 по мне слишком темно. Точне темнее чем F2.8 или даже F2
Great all around lens
Would you recommend this over a 24-70 f2.8? How is the OS paired with the IBIS on the S5IIX, does it make a big difference when going handheld?
Is it an E- mount , could it go with Sony cams?
The lumix 24-105 is an L-mount lens and cannot work worth with Sony cameras. That being said, Sony has its own 24-105 f/4 which is also a better lens than is given credit for. I was lucky enough to work for the St. Lawrence string quartet during the year of the great lockdown (helping them livestream). And this video is shot with each camera using it's corresponding 24-105/f4: An S1,S1H, and A7s3. I'll bet you'll have a hard time guessing which is which: youTube.com/watch?v=4jMEjcFRjVw&t=752s

oo focus, like it.
hi have you tried canon 24-105
I use the MKII with s5ii. If you need to use CPL filters, go with canon
I have the 24-70 sigma f 2.8 art lens for l mount and it has crazy distortion as both 24 and 70 on the bmcc 6k full frame. How does this compare?
Still some. But alot better
F4 unless shooting in daylight everyday. Nope for me automatically. Not looking to boost ISO to combat the F4 apeture. 35 1.2 or 50 1.2 will when for video everytime
can u set the lens to linear on the lumix s5ii then use the lens with that mode on bmcc6k ?
he pointed this out in the video, it is indeed linear. if im not wrong most of panasonics lumix lenses can be set to linear :D
But only when used with a Panasonic camera. It doesn't "set" the lens, it set the camera
Smashing video
I have this lens on the S5iix. I’m pretty sure lenses like this can’t have the f stop on the lens body because it’s not consistent through the focal lengths.
It's literally a 24-105 f4 lens... Not f4-5.6 or whatever
