    Celebrating the 10th anniversary of this absolute gem of an album with a throwback review for “Daisy” 🌼 I know this is a day early as it was released September 20, 2009, but I have another special anniversary video dropping tomorrow for a different album 🤫

    After all these years I still get punched in the face by how good Brand New music is. The first two albums are perfect in representing an age in life and in music, and the last three are just masterpieces.
    They are total genius.
    Sometimes I am so admired of the lyrics that I almost envy Lacey and Accardi while I'm listening... How did they come up with some of the metaphors, the concepts, the muzic?!
    And yeah, I still find myself googling Brand New every once in a while hoping to read something new.
    I had bought tickets for that last show in London, I live in Italy and that would have been my first time seeing them live.
    And now the only thing I can do is check on Jesse through Andrea, his amazing wife. Every time I see him or their kid in a post I am so relieved. Hope the boys are fine. Hope they'll be remembered.
    Thanks for the review Jon. It was a nice trip back in time.

    imo this is the best brand new album. its angry like some of the heavy ones in tdag but in daisy is more depressing, more painful. and the quiet tracks are fucking beautiful though it is still depressing and painful.

    I'd give Daisy a solid 5/5. And I consider it to be in my top ten albums of all time. Comparing it to the rest of their discography, Daisy loses only to The Devil And God...
    A rather bold statement ahead: The agony present on this album is pratically unmatched anywhere in music.
    The lyrics are jaw-dropping (who in their right mind would write that it'd be better if God were to wash away everything again then to let the world continue as it is now - "Well if the sky opened up and started pouring rain like He knew it was time to start things over again..."), the singing gripping (this absolutely falls under personal preference as Jesse is my all time favorite singer and his performances are fantastic), the instruments a delight no matter the intensity (I would describe this album's sound as controlled chaos. 'Sink' is one I'd point to as a prime example. Though 'You Stole', 'Noro', 'Bought A Bride', 'Vices' could all be used. Props here go to the band and Sapone.)
    I have no true least favorites although sure, "Be Gone" can be unappealing. To me that guitar pretty much makes up for it however. And as for my favorite, almost every song here sticks the landing except "Bed" (I never cared much for its sudden start. It does stabilize for me as it progresses).
    All in all, damn I can't believe this album is 10. That's crazy to think about... if only I'd been listening to it for that long. For me this album is about 3 years old. I guess that doesn't take anything away really, it's more just me giving my own small reflection on this stellar masterpiece.
    Thank you for reviewing this album Jon! Keep up the good work!

    I love this album but I don't find myself coming back to it nearly as often as Devil And God. That said, Sink and At The Bottom are exceptions and are among my favorite Brand New songs.

    If I had to rank their whole discography, it’d be:
    1) tie between Science Fiction & TDAGARIM
    2) Deja Entendu
    3) Daisy
    4) Your Favorite Weapon
    When this came out, I loved it mostly because of just how much I loved the band and how excited I was for the release, but over the course of the year following its release, I really cooled off on it and regarded it as their worst until 2015 when I revisited it in its entirety with a new perspective on life, and it finally clicked for me. It’s their weirdest record but it’s sonic abrasiveness and thematic intensity is what makes it so good.

    God this album is so damn good. It took me years to actually appreciate it, to be honest. After Devil and God- one of my favorite albums of all time, I (for some reason?) couldn’t appreciate it until about two years ago or so. But since then, it’s almost like the scales have fallen from my eyes and I finally see its genius. Now, for me, this album almost even surpasses TDAGARIM.

    So glad you covered this. It actually is my favorite album of all time. I can't even fully explain it to others but every second of this album triggers a different emotion in me. It doesn't try to be pretty in some way like their other albums do, it is just so beautifully messed up. There is always some sort of movie going on in my mind when I hear this which makes listening to this even more intense. I wish I could show this to other people but I guess that just isn't possible. Well, maybe that's what makes it so special to me...

    I originally hated Be Gone, but its really grown on me. I was listening to this album today as i walked and i realized how well Be Gone gives a sense of fractured thoughts and a shattered mind. The trick with it is you have to let go. With most songs we focus on the lyrics and progression of the song, but with Be Gone you just have to let it take you

    Brand new has been my favorite band since YFW released. Ill be honest as a 19 year old in 2009 i did not care for Daisy all that much. As a 30 year old man its one of my favorite album of theirs. It is definitely their most underrated work imo.

  • @kurtisscriba2137

    I agree that it's tough to put this one in top 3 Brand New (depending on the day I can put this above Deja or Science, though usually not both), which is a shame because this thing is damn good. For me, maybe one more banger in the last third of the album, cut from the same cloth as Vices, ATB and Sink, could have felt like an essential last gasp in the way 451 does on Science. I like In A Jar, but neither it nor the title track feel like a vital stepping stone to get me to Noro (Brand New, like Foo Fighters, always close on a terrific track). Considering the album's brevity, it makes me wonder what Daisy would look like as an EP. As an album, it doesn't feel large and expansive enough to really do itself justice. With that being said, what we do get is fucking awesome, some of their best stuff is on here.

    • @tomashosek4715
      @tomashosek4715 5 лет назад +1

      I get your point, but I've always liked the immediate transition from In A Jar to Noro - just revisited the record today and I was again caught by (a pleasant) surprise by the moment when the sheer chaos of IAJ's ending slips into Noro's quiet atmospheric intro. It's weird and unexpected and that's basically what this album is about. You're right that Daisy could fit an additional track in it, but even without it it's still a perfectly cohesive album in my opinion.

    • @kurtisscriba2137
      @kurtisscriba2137 5 лет назад

      @@tomashosek4715 That's a great point, IAJ's mayhem to Noro's mandolin is one of the high points on the album for me too. For me, I've always thought of Daisy as being the "heaviest" Brand New album, since Vices/At The Bottom/Sink overshadow the quieter cuts for me. So I'll go back and give Daisy a listen, but find myself just slightly disappointed since the album as a whole doesn't always reflect that carnal, "heavy" expression. I 100% agree with Jon's score here, the highest possible 4.5/5. It's so close to perfect

    This was originally my 4th favorite brand new album but I feel like it’s aged slightly better than deja (not that deja aged poorly by any means) but with this album being more unique I think it stands out more. Now it’s my 3rd favorite brand new album. Which says a lot considering how much I love deja, and with the devil and god and science fiction both being in my top 50 favorite albums ever.

    I love this album and honestly is a 5/5 for me personally!! This is my 3rd favorite album by them after TDAG and Science Fiction!! This album is pure anger, confusion, and frustration wrapped up in a 11 song masterpiece of a record!! Also Noro is my favorite closer on any album I've ever heard with it screaming out in pure pain and rage!! Love this record!!

    When I was getting into Brand New years ago, I liked Daisy more than Devil and God - it's shorter, more aggresive and straightforward, still dark, but less gruelling. TDAGARIM took me far more time to fully appreciate its masterpiece, so I wouldn't rank it lower than Daisy now, but Daisy has never worn off for me. I agree with you (as well as many comments here) that although it's not their best effort, it's still perfect and only proves this band's genius. Thank you for doing this throwback review and making me remind BN's music once again, this band will never get old for me.

    TDAG may be a better album but Daisy will always be my personal favourite. The production on this thing is imo the peak of the band and Mike Sapone's production. Noro sounds so sick when the drums and that riff come in. With some bands the lyrical content takes a nosedive in quality when other members take on writing duties, but Vincent's lyricism is on par with Jesse's previous efforts here. Bought a Bride is a severely underrated song lyrically.
