  • Pop Gone Wrong: Taylor Swift & The Tortured Poets Department. The superstar’s 11th album is a lukewarm, synthetic attempt at unhinged revenge in love & war, and it’s the final straw in my complicated appreciation for a musician too big to fail.

As a fellow Taylor fan, I agree with everything you said. So disappointing. This was such a downgrade in my opinion. I always loved her lyricism, but some of these lyrics made me roll my eyes or laugh out loud. It’s about Matty mostly. It must of been longer behind the scenes supply. Otherwise it’s just psycho to put so much energy into this guy, rather than Joe.
Joe’s songs were her best! I think he tried to help her down a more lyrical path.
And poor Joe. So shitty to write what she did publicly. Where is the respect. Making herself sound amazing as usually (despite covert humble pretence) what was his sin ?

Making playlists feeding the rabid fans with their theories about a person with mental problems being a cheater (when the one who cheated emotionally was her)? With releasing the second half (with all the “limited/exclusive” edition tracks) couple of hours later, making hardcore swifties buy it AGAIN to get the full experience? I was not a fan of a majority of this album, BUT I was going through a breakup so some songs I related to, that being fortnight. But the genuine good songs imo were so long London, loml, and the smallest man who ever lived. everything else was crucial for her to write at the time bc she was going through a lot. Like woman just got out of a 6 year relationship because her man didn't want to marry her. Only for her to get back with a man who promised her marriage and kids when they were 25, and then he ghosts her and she is now left with nothing...and she's on a world tour and has to put on a fake smile. SO I GET WHY THIS ALBUM HAD TO BE WRITTEN. But because of that t was rushed and the pop songs were uneccesary. If this album turned out like how the anthology turned out, it would have been better.

I agree there are some cringey lyrics on the album as well as some repetitive lyrics and themes , but I do think there is some AMAZING lyrics as well. loml is my favorite and is possibly one of the best Taylor Swift songs I've ever heard, it's so beautiful lyrically in my opinion.
One thing I think about this album that is different from her others is I think it was not entirely meant to be popular or for her fans or anything like that. I think she just had some things she wanted to get off her chest and share with the world, without caring so much about how the album performs or how well it meshes together. That's why it may be messy at parts, but there's beauty in some of the mess. Is it my favorite album of hers? No. But is it a bad album? I don't think so. But that's just my opinion and I respect yours as well!

I like Taylor Swift a lot but since Lover came out, I just feel like she is soulless. She has literally become everything that I thought she was in the beginning when all my tween friends loved her and the Jonas Bros and I was just barely tolerating it. I really miss country Taylor Swiss. I don't even like country as a genre that much. I don't hate it, injust don't go searching for it. But Taylor always sounded so genuine and now I just feel like she is a machine, just constantly pumping out content. I won't even call it music anymore. It's just something to release. Redecorating her old albums was genius and I really admired the idea behind doing that but adding all those Vault tracks on was too much. I literally felt like my ears were vomiting from eating too much at once too fast. And some of those songs were great too! It's just sad to see her turn into this. Taylor, I know you won't see this, but please please please SLOW the FUCK DOWN. I am actively avoiding this new album and I know it's only a matter of time before I give in. Most of the general public makes fun of her and her music, while a lot of her fans act like she’s God. I think her music is decent, but it’s not unique or different. I agree with every point made about how out of touch she is, but I don't think that's a very new complaint. I consider "folklore" and "evermore" to be her best works specifically because her writing isn't so focused on herself in those records.
That being said, I still think "reputation" is her worst album. That album, in my opinion, has all the same writing issues TTPD has, what with the out-of-touchness and clumsy cursing and all, but it's also musically her most baffling one. TTPD is "just" extremely boring.
Lastly, I want to touch on "The Anthology". I don't get why she insisted on releasing it attached to TTPD, because it's just a far superior album. Not that it's some sort of masterpiece or anything, but Dessner absolutely clears Antonoff in terms of production, and Taylor's lyrics, while still out of touch and far from her peak, are way less offensive than on the main release.

I haven't heard this record enough times to have a solid opinion, but I find myself agreeing with a lot of the points made by the negative reviews. I don't hate the album, I've been finding some enjoyable moments here and there, but it's such a drag to get through, especially the extra tracks.
One thing I'm particularly disappointed about is the lack of innovation. Taylor used to try different sounds with each album, I was looking forward to hearing what TTPD would sound like. Well, it sounds like an uninspired mix of Midnights (which itself was a mix of 1989 and reputation, soundwise) and folklore/evermore. The only interesting tracks in that regard are Florida and that one rock-ish song on the second half.
Back when TTPD was announced, I think I was one of the very few fans that wasn't happy about it. I'm a recent fan, I still haven't fully processed all 10 albums plus 4 vaults. Taylor's been releasing music every year since 2019, it's been mostly good music but it's too much and I'm the type of person who needs to spend time with music in order to digest it properly. I didn't need another 16 tracks to add to the pile, it's too much! Still, I thought TTPD would at least be good since Taylor's last few albums and vaults have mostly been good, but apparently that's not even the case anymore.
I'm really looking forward to your Problems With TS video, I really need to vent on that comment section.

The way you talk about the lyrics (which I must agree with) makes her seem very immature and not willing to branch out of her comfort zone. She needs a break and time to realizee her own wrongdoings instead of blaming everybody else around her via her songs. Maybe then she may even realize that her fanbase is super cult-ish and are part of the problem for putting her on a pedestal and worshipping the ground she walks on no matter what she does.

Love hearing your thoughts, even when they sometimes differ from mine! Thanks for another great video Jon!
Coming from someone who enjoys a good amount of Reputation and thinks Midnights was actually a solid pop album, this one didn't land with me at all. Only exception being The Prophecy.
I generally like Taylor and have been a casual fan of a lot of her music for about 10 years now. I think she is a good artist and songwriter at her core.
That being said, she isn't above constructive criticism. Neither is any other artist. I just don't know why many fans have to drum up so much hype around their favorite artists, portraing them as the best thing in music history, when music is so subjective. You can enjoy someone's work and have them be the best thing in your world, without the need for them to be the best thing in the entire world, if that makes sense? Not everyone is gonna share your opinion. It's ok to love this album or any other, while being respectful towards other people's critiques and music preferences.

When I first listened to it, I was really taken aback because it felt like Repulaton Taylor's lyrics, which I hated, and Lover Taylor's synth and I did not enjoy it as much as Midnights. Taylor is at her best when she incorpeates her "folklore" lyrics, not when she tries to wrap heartbreak in a bow. I will say, I thought LOML, Florida!!! and So Long London were strong lyrically and felt more genuine. As a bleachers fan, I have no idea what is happening with Jack's producing because I felt like he did a weird job on his own album. 1. Fundamentally broken production, percussion about as annoying and repetitive as the St. Anger snare drum.
    2. Pretty much no hooks or choruses, the songs were made to go through emotions rather than make a cohesive pop song. It’s like when Metallica chose not to have guitar solos in St. Anger; the subject matter of the songs were unusually personal for James Hetfield.

It seems like she didn’t get much outside artistic input or perspective or even simply time to herself to reflect on past experiences.
It is what it is as the album is already out, sadly…

As a longtime swiftie , I needed to say that this album is not needed. I will always listen to Taylor swift , but the Swifties need to stop acting like she’s god and everything she does is a masterpiece. I tried listening to the album but I could only tolerate forthright. Like the rest of the comments,Taylor needs to take a break and the Swifties need to stop being so overly defensive over everything. Not every one is going to agree with you about Taylor and I myself had disagreed with her. Jon you’re obviously entitled to you own opinion and also all the toxic fan bases need to chill out.

I'm not a Swiftie but I've always been pretty Swiftie adjacent , I'm an avid enjoyer and have liked everything she's ever done, hell I even liked Reputation and any time she's ever come out with an album I had it on repeat for a week. But I honestly haven't enjoyed anything she's done since evermore, I honestly don't think we'll get folklore & evermore ever again. I don't really give a fuck about the re releases or the vault, midnights was mid as hell but I can pick out a few tracks that stood out that I enjoyed. TTPD I got 40 seconds into Fortnight and said "nope". So props to you for even listening to that piece of shit, because I don't have the time, energy or desire to slog through it, not even for Post Malone or Florence, who I both love. I accidentally heard "clara bow" on tiktok and I actually do like that song, but I'm not gonna sit through 2+ hours of basically white noise to find the few tracks that stand out to me. I don't think that there is a pulse, synth or otherwise, on this album. She's a talented song writer but she's trying to cash in on what Lana Del Rey and people like that are doing. It's just a miserable sounding album. She's written break up songs for most of her career but they at least had something to them. This just sounds so boring and flat. She's has a lot of talent but she needs to broaden her horizons when it comes to what to write about. I have only really heard her hits and only heard this album in full because they played it at work, but it seems to me that she write exclusively about her ex boyfriends and related dramas. A break up probably does feel like the end of the world when you're 15, but she's in her 30s now and has been through so many break ups that she must have built up some sort of tolerance by now. Add to that the fact that she's a billionaire and one of the most famous people alive today, I don't see why she is writing such miserable sounding music about the same topic that she's always written about. There are so many reasons to be miserable in the world today and if she was tackling some of those issues, then I could understand the misery, but she's not. How many times can she tell the same story?

This album was a slog and I wasn’t really a big fan of Midnights personally due to the flat production IMO and the lyrics being super corny and cringey, and TTPD feels like it doubles down on that, but I’ll give Midnights this, I was never bored. You’re right on her relying on the “Taylor Swift-ism” on this album to where it’s gotten predictable and uninspired at this point. And you compare this to like a watching a Marvel movie, but at least certain MCU movies, the best ones mainly, excite me or try to do something different and surprise me.
This album felt like the success and recent critical acclaim get into Taylor’s head like she can’t miss this time but no one is there to tell her to let her ego down a bit, especially with these very “Woah is me…” lyrics. She needs to get away from Jack Antonoff and work with someone else, but it seems unlikely at this point.

I personally really liked this album. As someone who had a short 4 month relationship with someone who was a long term friend beforehand and promised me everything and then left me by ghosting me the lyrics and storytelling in this album really resonated with me. I think the intensity of those emotions is something you can only really understand if you’ve experienced it and I related a lot to Taylor on this album. I wasn’t a massive fan of the production on the first half of the album but I could really appreciate the lyrics and storytelling (I’m choosing to ignore the title track though), and I do think the second half of the album is definitely the stronger of the two. I don’t think it’s anywhere near Taylor’s best work for me (evermore, folklore, Red) but it’s still not as jarring as some of her stuff I haven’t enjoyed (reputation, Midnights). The biggest mistake people make (Swifties and non Swifties) when listening to Taylor’s music is listening to it through the lens of trying to work out what the drama is and what the songs are about. Her music is so much more enjoyable if you listen to it just as a song and not a like a tabloid article and pick up on themes instead. I think this album is the biggest victim of this. The discussion around Taylor has also become so polarised in recent years from people on both sides so it makes it difficult to have a nuanced opinion of her music, in my opinion.

I liked 7 songs of 31. Regardless of what people say you’re entitled to your opinion you’ve been a fan for longer than most of these Swifties have been alive. I personally enjoyed the quiet electric guitar on Clara Bow and the Red-esque production of Guilty as Sin? I also agree I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can) is a highlight. The only song I personally enjoyed that you didn’t seem to fond of is But Daddy I Love Him, but my enjoyment of it is likely due to nostalgia for her days of country tinged pop and getting some amusement from some lyrics. If reputation was Taylor playing the villain, I think in many ways this is her actually becoming that villain. Either way I really hope she goes on hiatus following the last two re-recordings, pumping out album after album is starting to impact the quality of the work itself.

okay, as a kind of a Swiftie (although in denial rn) since 2014ish, ima throw a lukewarm take in here (also i saw I'm not the only one on this wavelength): she ALREADY WAS boring and lackluster when she released lover in 2019 (i do NOT count reputation because it is too brightly "cringy' to write it off as boring, at least something in here is entertaining lol and honestly, some songs are not that bad) and if it weren't for folklore/evermore, I wouldn't have even been interested in what's going on with Taylor..
And then after folkmore she's returned to be boring AGAIN 😅 I mean, Midnights is MID!! There were probably a couple of songs that are 'interesting' on it, but aside from those, I was disappointed that people still hype her every album up like their quality is at least decent when I've heard the whole midnights album. So, I'm a bit afraid to touch this new thing, because i KNOW I'll have to chew through blandness to get to something worth spending my time on...

I'm not a superfan or anything, but I've been an avid Swiftie for a minute and I just feel like every album she's released recently (new) hasn't been good. Midnights, in my opinion, inspired absolutely nothing special. I expect Taylor to be coming with a new sound that the genre hasn't heard before for the most part, or to so thoroughly make that sound in that genre her own that it's immediately classic the way folklore is to me. But Midnights felt like every other electropop bit, which wasn't awful but nothing standout, and TTPD the album without the anthology part all just sounds the same to me if we're being honest. The first two songs I especially can't stand. The Anthology is so much better and I wish she had released it separately because I don't want to hear a quarter of that album in my whole album listen-through. I would've much preferred a twin album. I just feel like her originality has maybe taken a hit, it's not the coolest that she's hyper obsessing over Matty Healy which was a blip in her whole timeline, and I also can't stand that occasionally she's throwing in TikTok one liner soundbites like "blah blah blah but I'm soo productive!!" on that one song. She has more in her locker, so I expect more. Would love to hear your thoughts on the Anthology part. I always really enjoy your videos, even though I don't normally agree with everything said (read: rep is my favorite album and I stand by it).
