- Bill Fell, principle test pilot for Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin Company, with a walkaround of the Sikorsky-Boeing SB-1 Defiant helicopter at the Association of the United States Army’s 2021 conference and tradeshow in Washington, DC. The novel aircraft, with two coaxial rotor blades and a single pusher propeller, is competing for the US Army’s Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) contract.
Glad to see non conventional rotary aircraft becoming more mainstream. Osprey for example has been a great success. The Defiant will be a great leap forward leveraging that pusher prop.
It has a very impressive features control console, and comfortable pilot seats.

Looks like a great aircraft. As a former Blackhawk mechanic, I look at those rotors with great exasperation. lol. They look like a nightmare to work on.
No clutch mechanism like the Osprey. Pusher prop for the WIN.
Good to see Defiant X coming along. I've said it before but I really prefer this design compared to the V-280 primarily due to the relative size of both aircraft compared to the Balckhawk and the capabilites that rear prop offers.
Hope this Wins, or @ least coinside with the Osprey. The X2 got me exited years ago.

This certainly seems like a better choice for a Blackhawk replacement if we intend to keep the fighting air cav tactics like the Vietnam era picture highlighted. If we need to land more distant becasue of tech changes then maybe the V280 is a good choice. It seems to depend on our choice of tactics imo.

Sorry but the v280 is no where near as good as this platform and the Defiant & Raider are more true to form helo's and the x2 technology provides handling characteristics and agility that the valor just doesn't have and while the v280 is very good (especially in high speed horizontal flight) I don't think it's as good a fit for the army's needs because of the performance x2 technology gives you on approach to a target , on the "X" as they say and during departure from a target.

Amazing aircraft, Sikorsky should have won the FLRAA contract. It’s always about politics.

Maybe all this sales pitch is true.
But it's complicated. It'll require new skills to maintain, and will have new technical problems - remember the Osprey's sudden, catastrophic stalls and crashes? Only one group of people know a whole lot about coaxial-rotor helicopters and have used them extensively in the field: the Russians. And they're not going to give us any help.
New skills? Not exactly, the design is relatively simple and elegant. Should be quite easy for the army to train aviation mechanics on the drive system. The new engine design is more of an unknown, because they haven't finished developing it yet.
@@randomman057 But what are the specific weak spots, the ones you only find out by experience? Problems like the Osprey's. Or maybe one bearing that wears out faster or has lubrication problems - and the mechanics need to develop field fixes. With a new conventional helicopter, you might have some good guesses ahead of time. With this, you don't.
@@Baribrotzer Coaxial rotors aren't that complex of a design, certainly not as complex as a tiltrotor. Mechanically, coaxials are not much more complicated than traditional helicopter design.

What about the control system, though - the swash plate(s) and linkages to control the blade angles? Look at a picture of a Kamov, where the whole mechanism is exposed along that three-foot tall mast holding the upper rotor above the lower rotor. And remember, that was designed by RUSSIANS - who don't do anything complicated if they can do it simple. There's an awful lot of parts that could get hit by something or get dirt in the bearings.
@@Baribrotzer no more exposed than the mechanisms on plenty of other helicopters the US military uses. There's a video with one of the test pilots who briefly describes the mechanism for the top rotor. If I remember correctly, the controls for it are integrated into the shaft which drives the bottom rotor. Obviously more complex in some ways, but I do believe it was done so they could better protect those critical components.
Do we really trust todays Boeing to do much more than build sporty models to influence stock prices?
Give up range and speed for a quick deceleration, not what I would call a good trade. (vs V-280)
You're not giving up range and speed. The pusher prop still offers that with positive forward thrust. But it can also reverse the blade pitch and decelerate the helicopter quickly, something a regular helicopter can not do.

Also what does being black have to do with understanding english? I'm black and I understood him perfectly not to mention the subtitles you could have turned on.
