Shimano Nexus 3 Speed Adjustment | Internal-Gear Hub Bike Shifter Adjustment
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- I show you how you can adjust the Shimano Nexus 3 speed Internal-Gear Hub Bike Shifter easily. The problem on this bike was that it was jumping gears and going to the third gear although the shifter was set to second gear.
Steps for adjusting:
1) Set the shifter to the middle gear (second gear)
2) open the lug nut on the shifter with a 10mm key
3) turn the barrel roller (turn with pliers if tight)
4) adjust until you have the yellow dot between the white lines
5) close the lug nut again - DONE
If you have trouble getting the yellow line into position perhaps the shifter unit is out of place like in my case so I also show you how you can take the shifter unit off and position it correctly.

Thank you. Your video helped me understand a little more about the Nexus hub.
Great to hear that.
Thank you, you made it so easy to understand how to adjust the gearing. I have an issue with my new bike which should have been sorted out by the bicycle shop. After watching this video, I will do it myself. Keep those videos coming and take care.
Thanks for the positive feedback 😊
Thank you! I have same Nexus shifter and Im struggling to shift. I will try your method!
Did it work?
@@Homeneer yes it did! Thank you! 😄
Hello I am unable to keep the nexus system from popping off the frame. The hex screw spins and spins and will not bite down. Please help.
Sorry to hear that. Sounds like the threads are worn on the hex screw. Dont have experience with fixing threads. I would just replace the whole shifter unit. Price should be 15 usd or even under.
Great video, presented like clockwork including intentional drops and recovery. I've just done a basic service of my Nexus 3sp, now I want to strip it back like you did. I'm not game to get into the planetary though. Probably just soak it in oil and put it back in?
Thank you, this was perfectly explained. I’m an old BMX guy so anything but single speed gearing is foreign to me. 👍🏼
Welcome
Spot on and very helpful. Thank you

Thanks!!! 😁I was able to fix my jammed up 3 speed myself...which saved me time (taking it ti bike shop) and $$$. This is the best video because it is the only one I saw that mentioned removing the whole shifter, which is what mine needed. Mine got messed up when front handlebars got turned all the way around after transport - it pulled the whole cable too tight all the way to the end.
Great to hear that. It's always so rewarding when one can solve something like this by one self.
Thanks bruv this is a confusing adjustment to make and you covered everything.
Shimano specs says it isn't waterproof! Explains why mine is now seized after riding it in -20c through salty slush for 5 years. Sometimes it would freeze solid too because it got moisture in it. Surprised it didn't die sooner
Thanks for the positive feedback 😊
Are you serious that it is not waterproof? That does it I can’t get that igh. I seen on another video that it is noisy as well, so this new information seals my decision on passing on purchasing a bike with it.
@@buffalomind6838 Yes if you go to their site you can dig around and find the specs. It worked fine in rain for me but once it flash froze it would seize up. I rode it a lot though and parked around outside. Still....
@@paul6925 Thanks for the speedy response. I’m thinking it more thoroughly now that I am concerned with igh’s possibly not being waterproof, and the sound is also a big concern.
Another up question have you ever hit the shister box in the back?
@@buffalomind6838 nexus 8 might be different I’m not sure. Good luck!
Thank you! Helped solve my problem immediately

that was really simple and clear! Thanks
Great to hear that 🙂
Have you ever had the problem of the shifter popping off the wheel but while riding ? Keeps popping off
Not really. Did you tighten the hex key and still popping off? If yes, I suspect the hex bolt or threads have gone bad. Could that be the case?
Thank you for the quick reply I’ll have a look thanks
Hope you find the problem and find a fix for it
Mr. Home Engineer !!! 👍👍👍👍 EXCEPTIONALLY EXCELLENT VIDEO !!

Awesome.
Thanks
Very good, explanation of the problem & how to fix it
Thanks
I can’t get the yellow indicator to move unless I shift it at the handle. When it’s first gear it sits perfectly in the middle like it should when it’s in second gear. The yellow indicator is too far in, but I can’t get it to move. Is it okay to oil inside the box? Thanks, a subscriber
Great video. Thanks
You are welcome!
will try youR suggestion and return with the results Bill
Excellent 👌
Thank you! Just fixed my fiancée's gazelle :)
Awesome
How do you like 3 speed bicycle?
I think the internal hub gear 3 speeds are great. Easy to maintain and reliable.

Super clear video. Thank you. In my case for some reason I can not even shift. Just bought bike with Shimano Nexus and shifter is stuck on gear 1 (shifter on the handle bar) and i can't turn the rubber wheel. I don't want to brake it so I don't turn with all the force but it doesn't seem to work. Can you help?
Sorry not familiar with that issue
thank you, it helped alot! now i can fix the shifting on my 16" folding bike :-)
Great!
Hi I have a little question for you: the bell crank (this grey thing you are showing in your video) of my Nexus 3 is cracked. If I buy a new one, do you think I can replace it without changing any other part of the shifter? I not good with repairing stuff but I think if i only have to replace that grey thing, it shouldn't be so difficult.
Hi, sorry I'm not familiar repairing that part. The grey thing I call a spring in the video should be easy enough to change if you can find the part somewhere. So I would recommend trying it if the part isn't expensive. Still wondering is something stuck on the other side if that part in between cracked.
@@Homeneer Hi, sorry that actually the whole thing that you call the shifter unit that was cracked. I brought my bike at the bike shop tho change my rear tyre and one week later the shifter just srpung out of my bike. That part is a little bit cracked so it can't be fixed on the bike again. I have to buy a new unit, what a shame.
Anyway thanks for the info!
Oh okay. I think those are sold for around 15eur as a package including the shifter on the handlebar. Most likely you can just change the "shifter unit" and use the old wire and shifter. I would expect it to be a quite easy DIY fix.
How would you replace the cable?
That was very simple. Thank you.

On need drum brake on nexus 3 speed
good perfect
Your welcome
I have a Marin bike that uses this Shimano gear. A while ago, the tire went flat and had to be replaced. Since then, the gears would jump between speeds. I brought the bike to a store today and so far it seems to be okay now. If I have this problem again, I will try to adjust it myself. Thanks for this informative video!
Thank you

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the thumbs up 🙂
It doesn't work
Edit: nevermind, I think I fixed it, I'll do a test drive tomorrow cause it's late
Hope it worked out
Thank you so much!! This was exactly my problem! : )
Glad it helped
Thanks for the help!
Thought it had to be in 1st gear not 2nd gear for the alignment... Ty! :)
Great I was able to help
Thank you for the information. I was able to fix my problem!
Awesome
Problem solved! Thank you for such straight forward easy to follow video.

is it possible to replace the twist grip shifter with bar end shifters? I just got a bike with this shifter but want to restyle the cockpit
Sorry I don't know. If they sell them for that model then yes. Otherwise wouldn't mess with it because shifters are often very precise about the cable pull amount.
Thank your veru much! It was very helplful :)
Great to hear that.
Question, I have an old folding bike,a 3 speed sturmey archer that has a pin going in the hub. Would this Nexus one fit my bike? It is a universal uni sport fold up bike, maybe from early to mid 1980s
Sorry I dont know. I recently fixed a 11 speed and discovered that the different brands have different distances between the sprockets. So my guess is mixing brands will not work. If the bike has a sturmey archer rear hub most likely it needs a shifter unit from the same brand.
The principal for adjusting might be the same.
@@Homeneer Its a shimano hub, made in Japan, 3 speed with a part that screws on to the hub. Does this nexus one screw on?
@@Homeneer Mine is like this one at the 2 minute 40 mark ruclips.net/video/W9IIQdUc3Rk/видео.html
Sorry, that looks quite different. I doubt the nexus shifter would fit on it. Nexus slides on.
thanks for this ! i have to fix one of these today , in fact. the first time ever. this helps me a tonne !
Great to hear that

Thanks
Thank you sir
Thank you this was very helpful.

Hands down the nicest bike I've ever owned, it ...
Do you mean the Kona Rove? Just s bit strange the comment is on shifter adjustment video
Mine keep falling off even when I try to tighten it on , can anyone help?
Did you check the previous comment? Is your case similar?
This is why I love RUclips. Super helpful video, thank you. My only question, why wouldn't you make sure the shifter is seated correctly on the lug FIRST, prior to trying to adjust w/ the barrel nut? Cheers.
Good point. I'm a beginner as well so learned that during filming.
Thank you! It saved me a lot of trouble.

Thank you so much, my wife is so happy now 😊

So I followed these instructions but my issue still remains. 1st gear jumps into second, but 2 and 3 are fine. The indicator is alligned. Any ideas?
Sorry haven't come across that issue.
Did you make sure the shifter unit is pressed firmly in place like in my video?
@@Homeneer I actually fixed the issue by pulling it out slightly. Yeah I don't know but it seems to working fine now.
Very helpful - thanks.

thanks!! i was able to fix my bike

Thanks! This worked for me.
Great to hear that
Thank you for the great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you so much! I just bought a new bike online & was so disappointed that the shifter clearly wasn't working. Since I'd never seen a shifter like this (& neither had a friend I asked to help me), I was worried getting the problem solved would be difficult. Your video makes me feel like I can probably do this myself 😁
Glad I could help!
Smaller than it appeared in the photo

You got a great video here. I just bought a bicycle that has a Nexus that looks similar to the one in your video but with the same adjustments. Mine shifts through all the gears but second and third gear is a bit noisier. First gear is really quiet. So I think it just needs a slight adjustment. Great job!
Hope you got your bike adjusted
Amazing video!
Thanks
Great video👍👍
Thanks
Your video is the best to show every detail of the process on how to fix the problem. It's much better than the one recommended by the technical support of the bike vendor I bought from. Thank you very much.
Thanks for the feedback 🙂
