The king-daddy of science fiction media today.. sort of like Fallout 4 is the lord of post-apocalyptic RPGs, Star Wars needs no introduction. Thus, I'll just use this blurb to point out that until the early 80s, the film was just called "Star Wars" as "Episode IV: A New Hope" wasn't tacked onto it just yet. That was but the first of the mountain of modifications the movie took on over the years.

Not really. They are still worth something (unlike most VHS films), but not what you'd think seeing as there is such a demand for the theatrical versions. There are copies on ebay right now for under $5. Personally, I have two versions on VHS...the first widescreen boxed set, and the widescreen THX release. I also have the DVD release with the theatrical versions (crappy quality) as bonus discs. I still have not purchased the blu ray edition, and I will not until they release the the theatrical versions with a proper remaster. Lucas has taken enough of my money over the years.

Decker Shado Did you know that this R5-D4 nicknamed Skippy, could use the Force? After seeing a vision of Luke
Skywalker's future, Skippy made it appear that his motivator

fulfill his destiny as a Jedi Knight

Decker here is some strange back story about the droid Luke's uncle was going to buy but than it broke. That droid (in the expanded universe) was actually able to use the force and was able to sense that luke needed to make contact with R-2 so the droid sacrificed its self so R-2 had to be bought

I think it's the war in heaven, so its star wars, way more biblical/buddhist/Hindu etc, but definitely mostly biblical I'd say, you've got obi wan as I think zachariah, I thought he was john the Baptist but that definitely has to be yoda, an evil empire, rebel judeans, a chosen one, and they they fight with thier light, or the truth they bring to bear which is coloured literally by thier view of the world or the will of the force, the tusken raiders or maybe the jawas are the caananites the fall of the jedi temple is the destruction of The Temple, the empire gives rise to the desthstar, or the antichrist, or the dedtroyer of worlds in hinduism I think but there's loads going on there that I have yet to see, saying that western are pretty biblical too, a lot of follow the same beats as the biblical stories and generally teach the same moral lessons

20:38 When Yoda dies in Return of the Jedi, he faded out of existence also. It's how Jedi become Force Spirits/Ghosts. They effectively cast their physical body into oblivion to allow themselves to transcend death and become one with the Force itself. :) also, great review, Decker! Love your videos.

Kenobi is the Smith or Jones or Chin of the Star Wars galaxy. Worse was keeping the Skywalker name on Luke, you'd think Vader or Palpatine would have a flag in their systems to track down anyone with that name. And what about Uncle Owen? Vader doesnt keep track on his own family incase they have Force sensitive kida?

DenMon 2019 but yeah it almost kind of bugs me when people say that the original theatrical versions of the Star Wars Trilogy or never on DVD because you would think if people make such a big deal about it they would bother to search for this shit. And the fucked-up thing is that I didn't even had to I just got these as a gift when I was younger and have always had of them. It blew my mind the first time I heard someone say that they wish the Star Wars Trilogy the way it originally was, was on something more modern.

seriously, it's a 12 year old LIMITED EDITION box set. meaning they're not printing it anymore, very few copies are still working and what are left are going to be expensive. if everyone wanted one we'd literally run out immediately. all as opposed to putting the original on fucking Netflix or something. no, you can't just expect everyone to 'seek it out'.

Decker Shado - I really really hope you're reading what I'm saying now, because I want to explain this to you properly before you get to it. Concerning Midi-Chlorians - they are NOT the Force. This is clearly stated in Episode 1. Midi-Chlorians are micro-organisms containing the Force that helps them MEASURE the Force. Sure, it's still silly and stupid, and George Lucas clearly had been watching too much Dragonball Z - but I'm getting really tired of people getting that information wrong.
This is important, because the Force is still a mythical thing, as opposed to what you imply in this review of your's. So, once again - Midi-Chlorians are NOT the Force. They are micro-organisms containing it inside an individual person. That doesn't mean the Force can't exist outside of the Midi-Chlorians. So please, Decker, I beg you - get that right when you get to it.

I consider Star Wars to be Sci-Fi, but then again I've gotten deep into the nitty-gritty of the lore. The movies don't do a good job of explaining the science behind the technology of the universe, however the books made both by Lucas Arts and the plethora of authors within the Expanded Universe (screw Disney, the EU is still canon to me) go into pretty good detail of the tech. advancements the Galaxy has made over the millennia. Still, it can still be confusing and convoluted at times, with some aspects of the technology never really being covered in the first place. Basically, you have to delve deep into the lore to find the information that makes Star Wars the Sci-Fi it is marketed to be.

Everyone knows how bad shots stormtroopers are. Or, they think they know. Look at all the evidence we have of stormtrooper accuracy.1-Opening scene of "A new hope"=stormtroopers effectively gun down rebel troopers on the Tantive.2-Stormtroopers take out Jawas and Luke's parents.3-On Deathstar they can't hit Luke, Leah, Chewbacca, or Han. Of course Vader wanted them to escape so shooting any of these characters means incurring the wrath of the scariest man in the galaxy.4-"Empire strikes back" Stormtroopers effectively gun down rebel soldiers defending the base on Hoth.5-Stormtroopers can't seem to hit Leah, Chewbacca, or Lando while they try to escape the cloud city on Bespin . Again, Vader wanted them alive as bait for Luke so, no killing them again( and don't go and say Luke was there. Ok. He was. But Vader was never seen giving a counter order that they could kill them now.)6-"Return of the Jedi" Stormtroopers shoot and injure Leah and R2-D2 (as well as many rebel soldiers and ewoks) during the attack on the shield generators on Endor. So...maybe they aren't such bad shots.

Yes, one of the interesting things about Star Wars is the droids. They're clearly sentient, even though they talk about programing - because, if they're programmed, I'd like to meet that programmer! - but are perfectly contented to be slaves. On the other hand, there are rogue droids and, in the extended universe, even some bounty hunter droids - speaking of what, I think one of those shows up in Empire (No disintegrations!!!), and Grievous is part droid, part biological? Thank goodness Star Wars is a Space Opera (that's the term you're looking for, Decker, not Space Fantasy, it's been called Space Opera since the good old Flash Gordon days, praised be the great Ming!)

Luke's/Starkiller's father was originally meant to be a rebel, hence the line about him/her having too much of his/her father in him/her.
For some reason, the scene where they were talking about the father was cut from the film, not entirely on purpose, thus opening up for Lucas to change his mind later, when he decided to make the film into a film series.

He explains in a commentary track that ships in the Star Wars universe can’t travel in straight lines while in hyperspace due to collisions with celestial objects. Thus, distance is a crucial factor in how quickly a ship can get from point A to point B. The Millennium Falcon‘s superior navigation computer allowed it to travel shorter distances between points and arrive faster.

Hey decker you notice that Luke Skywalker drinks a blue liquid with his breakfast that is bantha milk and if you follow the instructions I give you you can replicate it some of this may seem fucking weird to put in milk but bare with me it’s all good
. Combine the following in a ziplock bag (equal parts)
    - berry punch flavor powder
    - blue raspberry flavor powder
    - blue Hawaiian Punch flavor powder
. Set that aside for a while
. Grab a butterfly pea tea bag (check Walmart or online) and make exactly 600mL of blue tea out of it with the coffee maker
. Put the tea bag in the tea and leave it in there for 45 minutes
. Cut up 1/2 a head of red cabbage and cook in enough water to cover on medium high
. Bring to a light boil and simmer for 10 minutes on low
. Strain it catching cabbage water in a bowl and add 1 tsp baking soda
. Combine the following in a 1000mL pitcher
    - 100mL of our blue tea
    - 100mL of our blue cabbage water
    - enough vitamin D milk to fill the remaining volume (bantha milk is to be as rich as possible so you have to use whole milk or vitamin D milk)
. Put that in the fridge and set timer for an hour
. Combine the following in a blender
    - 250mL vitamin D milk
    - 1/2 cup heavy cream
    - 1 ripe banana (mashed)
    - 2 tbsp fat free blueberry yoghurt
    - 1 tsp honey
    - 8 tsp vanilla extract
    - 1 tbsp sugar
    - 1 packet Sucralose
    - 2 tbsp brown sugar
    - 2 tsp powdered sugar
    - original coffee creamer
    - hazelnut coffee creamer
    - French vanilla coffee creamer
    - 1 tsp cinnamon
    - 1 tsp of our blue favoring powder mixture
    - 1 shot glass of Mountain Dew voltage
. Put that in the fridge until previously set timer goes off
. Now combine our blue colored milks together and refrigerate that until you’re ready to drink it

Before Disney's takeover and the screwing with the timeline and established characters, there was a way to calculate exactly when Star Wars takes place.
In one of the official comics, Han and Chewie ends up on Earth, thus anchoring the Star Wars timeline with our own. The crash landing takes place around the year 1813. There are mentions of Han's three children with Leia, so crafty nerds figured out when they left their own galaxy and using a recalculation from the Galactic Calendar (which has a few more days than the Gregorian), they managed to figure out the entire Star Wars timeline in Earth years.
For those interested, the first film takes place in 1804, with Luke and Leia being born in 1785 and Han being born in 1775. This makes Luke 19 years old in the first film and 22 when he becomes a Jedi Master.
But that is all gone now. In the original timeline, Starkiller was Vader's apprentice and Disney wanted that name for their new not-at-all-a-death-star death star, populated by not-at-all-storm-troopers storm troopers with not-at-all-Donald-Duck-helmets Donald Duck helmets. So they just said "screw it" and decided only the previous films were canon now.

Took me ages to get to it, but you did a good job at acknowledging some more basic types of flaws to this movie, some of which I didn't think of before.
    My favorite observations of yours:
2:13 - The Despecialized Editions. Thank goodness for these, especially since LucasFilm more or less said they aren't planning to remaster the original cuts.
15:02 - "Can't collect taxes from dead people." (And "Bank of Alderaan" later.)
16:06 - "Tarkin: 'It looks convincing, but you better go out and make sure'."
    Point disputes:
21:45 - [Death Star Trench] I figure Rogue One explains away that plot hole. Why is the trench a mile long, though? To make taking down a small-scale assault easier, I'd guess.
25:13 - [Mishandling of Death Star Plans; no copies] I think the Empire just wanted to make sure that the Rebels couldn't use the plans to destroy the Death Star. This partially hinges on Rogue One's story and whether Scarif was the only place where the plans were housed. It's possible, given their super-important nature.

  • @charlesvan13
    @charlesvan13 5 лет назад

That is a pretty big plot hole, that Vader assumes that there's just one copy of the plans.
They also had time to correct the weakness, i.e. put a force field, or anything over the exhaust port.

I still think the Kessel Run makes sense. They travel twelve parsecs in hyperspace, which is way faster than however many parsecs it would take in normal space. So they're essentially saying "that's how fast my hyperdrive works, I can get there by driving through less than twelve parsecs of hyperspace."

I have limited edition dvds of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. They were released in the mid 2000s. The first disc has the movies with the added effects and scenes. The second disc has the original theatrical versions of the movies without any scenes or effects. Its so cool to be able to watch the theatrical versions. I think the only way I'd part with these dvds is if the release the theatrical versions on blu-ray.

One of the main problems from this film is that they didn't make the hero vulnerable. Sure with the claustrophobic scene but that's just about it. When they are being shot by stormtroopers, they were completely unharmed. There is almost no urgency, which results with little to no tension.

  • @kratal122
    @kratal122 4 года назад

You know, act one stormtroopers have never been anything to sneeze at. Just look at Hoth. It’s the act two and three troopers that are push overs. I accept that they needed to get Han back into the story but it’s another reason that the Jabba’s palace plot hampered Jedi. We didn’t get to see stormtroopers kick ANY ass in 6 and then they get beaten by Ewoks. Still love Ewoks, (born in ‘92 and grew up with the movies, so of course I do), but it may have been nice to see something to establish that the Ewoks won through unconventional guerrilla warfare against a trained but unprepared and overconfident enemy instead of left thinking it was entirely because of stormtrooper incompetence and lack of surveillance in their base’s perimeter. Not one patrol noticed the log traps suspended from the trees or piled on a hillside before they took out the ATSTs? Yeah, EU is a thing and gives some explanations and details, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t’ve be nice to have it shown on screen if it could work within the movie. Of course, if it couldn’t’ve worked within the movie, it’d be best left out. Like that fucking song at Jabba’s palace in the “special” edition.

Fun thing is we remember this movie as Luke vs Vader, but going back to the original promotional materials, the main characters were Kenobi and Tarkin. They were the most famous actors in the film, not some unknown kid and some masked henchman.

    • @felynecomrade
      @felynecomrade 2 года назад

While technically true, Vader really doesn't come off as a henchman. Throughout the movie, he and Tarkin exchange words and strategies as equals multiple times.
I'm actually not sure what Vader's rank is within the command structure of the Empire, either in government or military. I guess it's just common knowledge that he's the right hand of the Emperor.

I think the main reason for the later edits wasn't George objectively looking at the end result, but thinking back to the things he wanted in there but couldn't pull off. Kind of like a petulant child who obsesses over not having enough Dewbacks or the fact he wanted a claymation Jabba in the first film. Looking back there's no real good reason FOR those things... except for the fact he wanted them.
It's the reason the film with the least edits, Empire, doesn't have 300 AT-ATs stomping across the snow... because George had very little to do with making it. He didn't stay up for years dreaming of Cloud City having a food court or Yoda living in a giant mushroom.

the two main problems are that 1: his 'original vision' is clearly worse than the original in several places, probably because nobody is telling him what not to do.
then 2: it's been made infuriatingly hard to get these original cuts at all. one rare DVD collection is the best you'll get. they refused to put star wars in the national film archive because they were too stubborn and gave only the edited bluray, which can't be accepted. it's so annoying how stubborn he is.

Sending multiple copies of the Death Star plans wouldn't have worked. In fact, it might have made it impossible for the Rebels to take it out, if they managed to capture, say, a spy, and found the files in their possession. Then they'd call up their handy dandy engineers and fix that vent port. Then again, why didn't the Empire have multiple copies of those files themselves?
