In this video I will focus on how to best use the volume faders and EQ for flawless DJ transitions. How do you transition between songs? Do you use the whole EQ or just swap the basses, or worse just use the cross fader? In this video we'll compare all these methods and by the end you'll have a better understanding of how to make all your DJ transitions sound world class.

I’ve only had a dj controller a little over 2 weeks so thought I’d start watching RUclips to get some ideas,and to be honest andrews are the best ones,doesn’t complicate things,yet with each one I watch I’ll get on the controller and with in 5minutes I’m putting together what I’ve just watched him do,excellent work mate,keep the videos comming

A lot of the “big media” dj videos (digitaldjtips, crossfader) just come across like teachers that “know” how to dj but arent really that good or were skilled club djs
All due respect to them, they deserve some props too, but with Andrew I feel like I’m getting a personal lesson from a resident dj of some poppin nightclub

Currently doing the course and it has changed everything for me. I was aimlessly looking around for RUclips tutorials for over a year from different people and never felt like I was ever getting anywhere. With the course and how it is laid out it means each day when I go on I know what I'm doing and I can practice at that. And once the course is complete I bookmarked the most important lessons and will go back and keep practising at them. If anyone is on the fence like I was as I'm usually sceptical with online courses just go for it. Its so cheap for what you get. And no better time to get it then now while pretty much the whole world is in lockdown!

@@ellijackson6023 100 per cent as as Andy says in the videos he has being djing and running clubs for over 20 years so he has taking all the best knowledge from that and put it into the course. If you feel like you are getting anything from the free videos then you will 100 per cent get more from the course as he goes into a lot more detail and shows lot more techniques in the course

This is the best eq mixing tutorial I've ever seen, can't even imagine what you courses are teaching
I DJed professionally in clubs back in the '80s and early '90s when we didn't have access to the EQs on the mixer. I like the subtlety you can get in your mixing when using the EQ. It's a great tool for the toolbox.
I DJed back in the stone age, we didn't have access to all this fancy electricity, we just used to smash rocks together and dance

i love doing eq work. for a whie i would just set all my eq at 9 o clock on my incoming song and then slowly start swapping all the frequencies depending on where i was mixing into the song. i feel it does layer the incoming song under the playing song perfectly and then you can do a lot of eq play and you dont have to worry about the volume faders until you are bringing the playing song out

Perfect tutorial man, I am a eq lover, hate to do the transitions with the faders. Here in argentina they alway teach that you have to do everything with faders and i always think to myself...OK, i will not do that, the eq transitions sounds lot better. How did I miss this one... great way to put it! I do use EQs all the time (Deep and Progr House) and dare to say almost exclusively, Faders 100% before hiting play. I have always tried to use kill eqs since available, that changed a lot my way of mixing and doing long and seamless transitions for harmonic mixing.
And the trick on the bass it is a must. The variable resistors used in the mixer for volume faders from last century were always logarithmic (not linear). I think that also applies to EQs and thus the bass swapping (or even highs and mids) is not that linear as it may seems (with controllers and digital mixers I think that is mostly configurable, but I am old fashion :) ).
The only thing I do differently, or I should say additionally, is keeping an eye on the vumeters since I hate clipping or going overhead the amplification design. And as far as my experience goes, the monitors are not as sensitive as the little red/yellow LED sensing the output volume.
This is very good content with lot of information to digest for beginners DJs. I recommend watching this more than once to grasp all the intricacies mentioned. It will definitely improve your mixing quality. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Your EQs only go to -26 dB normally. If you switch the EQ Curve to Isolator (the switch just to the right of the channel faders on his DJM-900) that gives you -infinity dB on the EQs and you can fully fade out a track and transition with just the EQs. Or ... if you check out the “Lena Willikens - Mixing out of a difficult track” video she’s doing techno transitions using the trim knobs since those are -infinity by default and you can keep your EQs in the less-aggressive normal setting. If you really like playing with knobs you can set the trim with your EQs maxed at 5-o’clock and use the whole range. That’d be a weird habit to get into, but it’s kinda fun. The EQs are asymmetrical so it’s only an extra +6 dB on the boost side. You never have to be bored transitioning from one track to the next since there are a million different ways to do the same thing. 🙂

Great Video love the Equ. Mixing really. I startet some Month ago but you give me so much energy to try Things out as a beginner.
Just to throw something different out there. Try incorporating the gains into your EQ as rotary faders. You get so much more delicate control over your volumes as rotary faders work with your wrists natural movements. Coming from high energy trance and techno you use the sliders for harsh cuts and stabs so using these for precise movements becomes redundant. Using gains as a fader is a great tool when you want to slide out the bass on one track but bring through all the elements of the other especially over longer periods of time

I do both, fader work and EQ mixing. It just depends and I use different types of transitions to keep my mixing unpredictably. For EQ mixing, I have always swapped highs, bass and sometimes mids.

It is very important to mention,to balance the gain of the comming track with the other already playing before removing or messing with the EQ.That way it will be easyer to choose wich EQs and how much of it we should increase or decrease.And it avoids that the new track overlaps the other when the kicks comes in.Also I usually dont have some sort of Formule to mess with the EQ´s,it always depends of how the two tracks and their instruments fit together.
Usually I only remove the Highs if the highs of the playing song are already strong,and swap them (like most people do with the bass) when the hi-hats of the new song comes in.Usually do that when I mix with the compass instead with the kick.Its nice to practice with phones always on or with sound blasting.

Got to say your videos are absolutely great and I’ve so far only view some of your free ones on your channel. Keep it up! Also wondering if you will be posting any videos about hosting your own night at a club? I know you’ve said before “you will get into your local scene” but in a lot of places especially like where I live in east Scotland there’s not a lot of clubs anymore and the ones that do will only ever have your typical top 40 playing by some unknown DJ. The only time real dance music is played is when a specific night is put on for that, and for that the promoters either won’t let you or even want you to pay to play! All the club owners and promoters here are just money hungry and up themselves so I really just want to put on a good night to play what I want to hear and have a good time. Thanks for your time if you read this!
hey, I've just stumbled across your channel, I'm a beginner DJ whose been teaching myself for 6 months and I am getting frustrated with my lack of creativity with my mixing, I really like the way you present the information and its definitely given me more things to think about and play around with. I'm especially struggling with things like dubstep. When I watch dubstep DJs live it seems like its just build-up into drop into build-up into drop which I can't seem to master so I'm looking forward to your videos on that genre. I would love a video on the new V10 mixer. I'm a student of your course and use eq mixing. I used to mix with isolator mode on the old mixer. I could shove the volume fader up and start my eq work. With the new V10 mixer which is a club standard the mids (low and high mids) are not full cut. So it took a lot of getting used to bringing in the volume fader slowly because u can hear the mids even if the eq is to 0. Mids are now - 26db. Please make a video on the new mixer 🙏🙏

Mixing with the volume fader works best if you use the Logarithmic setting. It gives you the most subtle control in the 50%-100% range.

I’ve seen another DJ on RUclips leave his high EQ at 12 o’clock and slowly brings in his mids and bass EQ from 7 o’clock(all the way from the left)but that probably wouldn’t be total kill on the mixer he uses as the mixer I use is an Allen & Heath Xone 43 which is total kill all the way to the left.

I usually do a 24 bar transition. I introduce highs then mids then lows each 8 bar apart..but sometimes the songs just dont work esp the mids feel like they came suddenly out of nowhere.. any work around would be appreciated
Hi Andrew, I’m loving your videos! I recently retired from my corporate career but have been a life-long music fan and go to quite a few festivals each year (when there isn’t a pandemic) but have only started out DJing recently. I am mixing mostly Techno, Psytrance, progressive Trance, progressive Psytrance and also playing around with some more mainstream House sub-genres. I am curious if you have any specific guidance on EQ crossover frequencies. Do you vary them by genre? Do you keep them at default? Will most club mixers be the same settings, or is that something a DJ should check when starting a set. Is it just personal preference? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experience on this topic.
Generally most mixers are the same but if not it's easy enough to adapt. I cross over EQ frequencies depending on what I wish to accomplish.
