Reboot the camera with the battery
Error message CHA on the Nikon D90. Possibility of solution by starting the memory card with the battery. Maybe for other Nikon cameras.

All I did to get rid of the CHA was to clean the SD card's contacts with denatured alcohol. Now works great, again.

I get the CHA in the lower right hand corner. Battery charged shows 7.5 - 8.4 volts. I've charged over and over, wiggled the batter back and forth (spring loaded, before closing the battery door, pulled data card and tried to boot with battery but still same thing. I have the window on now trying to discharge battery to recharge to see if that helps. Says something about ISO-AUTO. The battery indicator at the top left of my D-90 shows full charge. I get that CHA message once I install the battery without even turning the camera on. It's immediate. I guess I have to go to the book. Everything looks great inside the battery compartment and I used some dielectric grease to no avail. Window screen is still on with CHA flashing. I know it's a false battery issue because there's no flash and I can't start video or taking single photos. I just don't get it.

SOLVED>>>>> JUST AN FYI EVERYONE!!! The CHA warning symbol stated (in my D-90 book page 256) to check my card to see if it was locked. I recall one time that I found my card locked and now I checked it again. It appeared unlocked but for SAG, I locked it and unlocked it, re-inserted the card and my camera is fine again instantly, and I didn't have to reboot with my battery. It seems that the CHA is to check the memory card. I got suspicious when I left my view screen on as if I would do a video and let it sit and after about 10 minutes, it auto shut it's self down. The battery indicator indicated that I did draw battery power so I knew my battery was fine. I did this a few more times because I wanted to reboot my battery by recharging it. While I was draining my batter, I was reading the book page 256, and there it was!!!!! CHA was staring me in the face with my memory card to blame. I was suspicious when I tested my battery to begin with to find a full charge!! Check the memory cards first!!! Slide that LOCK bar back and forth to make sure before thinking the card is corrupt. That is why my photo taking functions failed. Camera zoomed fine but no snap shots. CHA is not for battery as you can see by the book and by my findings so far.

Could it also mean the battery is near the end of its life?

No, the battery is completely ok. The problem is causing a defect in the memory card controller. Rebooting with the battery will help
