I worked at EB when Eddie was there developing this guitar. He spent a solid week at the factory with the luthiers and Sterling cranking out lots of prototypes. They were even winding pickups on the spot. I think he played each one for a good 30 mins before they would change something. He'd show up around 10 with a 12 pack and some chips. We were into ping-pong and Eddie was pretty good. SUPER down to earth guy who seemed to enjoy bullshitting about anything other than guitars/music. After the guitar launched and was a big success, He'd pop in just to say hi and when Wolfgang was just a few weeks old, he came by with Valerie to show off the baby. SOOOO proud! I think he was fascinated with what it would be like to live a normal life and work. Also, Dudley was super cool!
Hey, question - there are pictures of early 90s Eddie holding a natural or white prototype that has the Axis name on the headstock. The story I've heard recently is that the shape of the body already existed and was going to be released with that name before he signed on as a signature artist and the stuff written at the time about it being completely his own design wasn't exactly true. Is there any truth to this? I totally get that he'd have picked the pickups, the bridge, suggested the copied Kramer neck profile, etc, but it would kinda make sense to me given that EB retained the right to make essentially the same guitar after he left.
@chemoman… I’m doing some research for another video. Would you mind hitting me on my DM on Instagram? I have a couple of questions you might be able to answer. Or let me know how to reach you. Thanks.
I bought mine from a Manny’s mailbox music magazine in 1995. You couldn’t pick the color, so I had no idea what I was getting until I opened the case. It was the natural color. After seeing how faded some turned out, I’m glad that’s what I got. I’ll never get rid of it, an amazing guitar. That neck is perfection in my opinion.
I own 2 AXIS models, never could afford the EVH version. I lusted over the same model at my local music store growing up, a trans gold EVH at Wray's music in Lemoyne PA. Beautiful guitar.
Small world here, I live up in Perry County, Thom's guitar here was mine, bought it at Mike's Music over on Jonestown Road in Harrisburg back in "93", used to frequent Wray's Music a ton back in the day, dealt with Mike Mutzabaugh a lot, miss that place!!!
Mike Mutzabaugh was my go to guy. He always handed me the EVH when I would come in, he knew I wanted it bad. I also bought a ton of stuff from Mike's music in the burg. Small world indeed. @@jimhaubert6747
Huge Eddie Van Halen fan. Managed to see them in Ghenk, Belgium my senior year of high school in 93 on the F.U.C.K. tour. It was everything I dreamt of, expected and so much more. Watching this video takes me back to that time. Thank you for the in depth history looking forward to the video of the Ernie Ball/Peavey/EVH video.
Thanks man! I hope you like the rest of the series too! That must’ve been an amazing concert to see! Since you’re a big Van Halen fan, I’ll tell you that I’m working on something VERY special that will drop in October. 🤫 actually, tell all your Van Halen friends. 🤘🏼
My bros gone. I loved how you came to find VH!!! Total and complete respect! ❤️ I will watch the rest later. Loved and subscribed. Got me twin Peavey Wolfgang Special’s US made. One is my baby since 99 when I got it new…still gigging with it today!
I taught my granddaughter how to play on that guitar because of the smallish size and slim neck, I remember it had a fast neck with a satiny feel to it, a really great guitar, glad it made your dreams come true, Jim H.!!
Also came in translucent green. That’s what mine is. Some apparently faded over time. Mine still looks great. My favorite guitar and the neck is butter.
Have the exact same one. Bought for me by my wife in 1993. Named her Chiquita. After the banana. My main squeeze that I've played nearly every day. God Bless Eddie.
I got one. I’m 1996 at Guitar Center in Hallandale for graduation In translucent red. Also regardless of color. Some tops were quilted maple top and some flame
Hey Thom I just came across the channel. Thank you so much for putting this video up, as well as the comparison video you did more recently. I absolutely LOVE everything about EBMM EVH, Peavey, and EVH guitars. I recently purcahsed a Stealth Wolfgang that was made by the Jackson custom shop in Japan. That thing sounds and feels amazing. I also have a SUB series, if you are familiar with that. It's like the cheapo version of a Sterling, which is of course a more affordable line than the EBMM guitars. I paid $400 for it used, but it has a Sterling FR trem, gig bag, and it sounds and feels SO amazing for such an affordable guitar. I gave it to my wife as a gift, she is just starting to learn. We also call that guitar "Valerie"! My other guitar is an EBMM JP6, one of the very first in the production of John Petrucci's colab with Ernie Ball back in 2002. And that guitar also sounds amazing, especially clean on the middle switch selection. The way they wired that particular JP6 with the switch in the middle position is the best clean sound I have ever heard from an electric guitar. I had a Jackson Dave Mustaine signature King V that I loved, but sold it in order to afford the John Petrucci sig JP6. I'll subscribe and hope you will do more videos about everything EBMM EVH, Peavey, EVH, Eddie himself, the music, etc. Deep dives, longer format videos like the dude from Vaticants does, personally I prefer that sort of content. His video comparing the different guitars Eddie used is one of my all time favorites. Thank you again for the great content, and I look forward to seeing more! Great job, BTW! Very well done videos.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you're keeping your guitars in the family and giving it to your wife! 🤣 more EVH stuff is in the works! Have you seen the Monsters of Rock episode from Halloween?
Thanks for the video! Out of all of the EDDIE signature guitars, the Ernie Ball Musicman EVH is still my favorite and my grail. I hope that one day, I'll be able to get a cherry burst, I love it's look. That said, I've owned the Peavey and EVH Wolfgang's, and they are great, too. But I love that ERNIE BALL MUSICMAN best. It's just got a beautiful look, I love where the toggle switch is, and the body shape is more appealing (to me) than the other shapes
Oh man, I sold my cherry burst a few years ago! I feel like the EBMM is more Tele mixed with a Les Paul & the Wolfgang’s are more Strat mixed with a Les Paul. Thoughts?
@@ThomTranOnline I'd have to agree. With the EBMM shape? It's definitely more Tele/Paul, due to that upper horn being different from the Peavey/EVH upper horn.
I grabbed a translucent black one from the original owner a year or two ago and it's one i won't ever get rid of along with my first Peavey Wolfgang I've owned since new in early 1997.
Great Review. Love the story. I was a broke kid from Buffalo too (now live in SoCal) and bought the demo model from The House of Guitars in Rochester on layaway. Got Eddie to sign it @ Jim Kelly’s bar (long story) and just got back from Sammy’s 76th birthday in Cabo. Oddly enough I’m going to be in San Luis Obispo this weekend for parents weekend @ SLO. Would love to connect with you at some point. Thanks again for the great review.
No Way! House of Guitars in ROC! I remember driving up there looking for a very specific Les Paul! That's awesome! I remember when Ed & Jim Kelly used to hang out all the time! Anytime I'm doing a show at the Laugh Factory or Flappers in Burbank, you're welcome to my guestlist. Just hit me up!
Cool video. I have owned several EBMM Axis guitars. The build quality is top notch. But now I have an amber Peavey Wolfgang. I prefer it for several reasons; it’s a hard tail (not available with EBMM), the carved top is more comfortable, the switch is in the upper horn and the 15” radius fretboard makes the neck feel bigger. I would like to see a comparison video between EBMM, Peavey, and Fender, especially regarding the pickups.
Oh but my friend. There IS a Hardtail EBMM EVH! VERY VERY RARE! And I own 2 of them! And they will be the subject of a future episode! And I’ve got plans for some comparison videos in the works too! But those Peaveys ARE sweeeeeeet. What do you think about the Peavey vs the EVH version? 🤔 thanks for the watch! I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
I ve both, early 2000 Axis trans gold and Original '92 signature one...basically same Guitar , offset shaped neck , custom Di Marzio Pick ups , Gotoh tremolo ,and so on... except f6r a new better switch location on Axis ....amazing guitars...thx for the Video!Y
Goodstuff! One correction though on the Axis EX models which were made from the leftover parts sent from the Obispo EBMM factory to Kanda Shokai factory in Japan. The bodies and neck were made locally though but to the exact specs (except the body had a veneer top layer). They resemble Ed’s prototypes and are more or less the same as the USA signature ones (at least as per my experience)
I have a Stirling AX40 , Also a Wolfgang standard , and a EVH special . In all honesty they all have their good points and I can’t say one is better than the other to any great degree .
Back in 2003, I walked into a guitar store and hanging off the "pre-owned" rack was a beautiful '93 amber Music Man (exactly like yours) EVH sig model with no price tag. I was there with my nephew who was about 14 at the time and just learning guitar. I grabbed the EVH and asked if I could take it for a test drive. I fell madly in love after the playing the usual VH stuff on a EVH sig series....then, after about 5 mins of noodling around, the guy behind the counter says..."not bad, buddy...sounds like she's made for you to take home. I'll tell you what..that guitar got traded in last night..I need a grand out of it and it comes with a case too" - (I live in Canada so that means for about 1130.00 out the door I could have the guitar I've dreamed about for over a decade for a STEAL of a price. This guitar was VERY well cared for) I was about to toss out my Visa card and grab it, until I remembered that my wife and I just bought our house that week and I couldn't spend ANY big money...NO CREDIT card purchases!! So, I sadly handed it back after telling my story to the store clerk. Of course, 2 weeks later when I went back, it was gone....someone got a GREAT deal! That someone wasn't me...
Ugh. That’s a brutal story man! I felt every bit of it! That would’ve been a killer price! Hopefully you come across another one at a reasonable price!
@@ThomTranOnline I think my chances of EVER finding a sig series for a thousand bucks are less than zero! The Axis as well as the older OLP series are also going up in price because a lot of people are now realizing that they're a great guitar for the money....especially when the sig series Ernie Ball are now into the 5 figure territory...that's crazy!
I’ve had 2 amber EBMM EVH in the pass, an ‘92 and ‘95. Each time I’ve told myself I will never sell…..😩… they are amazing guitars.. I still have a Peavey Wolfgang standard deluxe in amber… Great video, you made me miss them 🎸🎸🎸… 🤘🏼🤘🏼😎🎸
Great video. Loved 'em ever since I saw Ed in Guitarist magazine in the UK in '91 with a feature on it. I was 23 but couldn't afford one either. I had a chance to buy a red one for just over 2K a few days after Ed' left us but stupidly let it slide. Fast forward to 2021 and prices were soaring and I finally bought a 1993 Trans Amber imported from the US for over 5.5K ! I had an Axis in same colour which I sold for just over 2K to help the dent in bank balance 😂. It sits with my collection of EVH guitars and I'll never sell it. 😊
Isn’t it crazy how expensive they’ve gotten? I got an Axis EX for UNDER $1000 a few years before Ed passed and now those are listing at THOUSANDS of dollars! I’ll be working on an episode of about it that model too! I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
I have a couple of Axis guitars myself, one in the same color. I know its not the EVH series but I love it just the same. I actually went backwards having bought and used 2 Peavey Wolfgangs prior to the EB. do you happen to have more specific specs on the pickups and "tone" pot? i am looking to outfit mine with the right hardware rather than the stock but i have no idea how to go about finding them.
Hey man, as long as you love your gear that’s all that matters, right? Are you looking to replace the pickups and tone pots on the Axis to make them more like the EVH? Is that what you’re asking? I have the original manual that came with the guitar in the case. I think the spec info is in there. Once I get back to LA, I’ll dig it out and see what kind of info it has for ya!
@@ThomTranOnlineoh man!! Yes please!!! Yes, thay is what I am going for. I have heard great things about the pariah pundcake pickups but I sure would like to know what the correct ones are so I can check and see if they are available!!! And yes, I love my EBMMs!!!
I know nothing about pickups used . i can offer my prefrence on the potientiomer.Bourns pots are a sure upgrade . The pot used is a volume pot with the tone knob instead of volume knob. The Schaller version trem. is my personal favorite, over Gotoh. make sure its made in USA , Germany . Im no expert but have had over 2 decades in the music industry, owend 4 EVH MM guitars which I never changed anything. Sadly I sold or traded all four. I never played any other guitar that I didnt customize myself in some way. If you experince having trouble keeping axis in tune after using trem, tighten the allen screws on back of neck under locking nut 2.5mm I think. Also you have 2 high quality and incredible guitars the difference between Axis and EVH are switch location and the Axis neck gradually gets a little thicker when closer to body. This info was from my MM rep.
Shit I was 21 in 91 when they dropped and I couldn’t afford one either… I rember seeing Kramer pacer deluxes in music store for 650. Around 87-88 Couldn’t afford that either..
I was not a huge fan of the EBMM shape, I guess I was just too fixated on the Kramer 5150 model (which I actually - putting teflon suit on in preparation for a flaming - prefer over the Frankie) I have had a chance to play a couple of EVH Wolfgangs - standard and special - which I really do like a lot. But a friend of mine recently scored a Peavey Wolfgang - HARDTAIL. It has the most beautiful bird's eye maple neck and fretboard and is finished in a sunburst. An absolutely gorgeous guitar.
Hey man. Everyone digs what they dig! You keep loving those Kramers! And since you like the 80’s Kramers you’re REALLY REALLY gonna wanna watch the Special Halloween episode that drops on Tuesday! Or watch the latest video about the Series 2 Sambora for a sneak peak if you want to know what it is! As for the Wolfgangs, I have TWO hard tails in green and purple. I call them the twins. Video about them is in the works! Hope you like the rest of the series! 🤘🏼🎸🖖🏼
It was one of the sweetest feelings I've ever had. I think it got delivered pretty quickly. Days, MAYBE a week. Tops. It was a few years ago. Hope you enjoyed the episode.
In 1992, my wife bought me a tobacco sunburst, that guitar was my most prized possession. After the divorce in 2006, I couldn’t bare to look at it anymore, sold it on eBay. Loved that guitar.
The 80s had the best music. I don't even listen to anything made after Nirvana came along and screwed things up unless it's a new release by one of my favorite bands. Will you be doing any episodes on Vito Bratta from White Lion or Brad Gillis?
Funny that you ask. I opened for Night Ranger last September and Brad let me noodle on his custom Strat! Photo on my IG last September. Trying to get him to come on do an episode about his guitar!
@@ginoames I’d say half of it is great. The other half is meh or puke. I actually have huge nostalgia for 5150 because I’m only 35 and grew up on all my dads records and Van Halen was always my favorite and the 5150 album was a staple in my youth years. Back when I was young and dumb, I used to think the Sammy era was the best, then I got older and smarter and realized the Dave era stuff just rips harder and better and all the Dave stuff is better than 5150 imo. The sappy love songs on 5150 are pretty cringe. They definitely lost some edge. The stay at home moms eat it up, but a red blooded American male like me isn’t gonna get up for a song like love walks in or why can’t this be love. Dreams is still great though.
I wish there was a good way to tell what to price these at. I am going to sell my red 94 EBMMEVH but not sure what a fair price is. They are all over the place as far as price on Reverb.
5k if ya don't wanna be a dink haha. I'm just saying that because there are so many profiting off Ed's death that they went for 25k in 2020. The groups on Facebook that sometimes have these guitars change hands that is the going price that people will actually buy for.
@@EvelynAutumnMusic That's what I was thinking - I got an offer of 5200 which I thought was fair. I knew those prices from 2020 were not realistic. Reverb allows one to see sold listings but those prices are all over the place and I believe people can put whatever they want for a sold price so not very reliable.
Ahh the prices. There's some loon on reverb now who just did a $16,000 price DROP on his. He need to do another $16,000 price drop. It's just a guitar.
That’s a great idea! I don’t own any of those but I can definitely do some research on them! I DO have a yellow tiger striped Jackson Dinky Pro I call my “Def Leppard” guitar because whenever I pick it up, the first riff is Photograph. 🤣🤣 and whenever my band played 80’s shred metal that’s the guitar I use. Hope you enjoy the rest of the channel!
I'm a couple years older than you and I know what you mean by saying "older guys don't play". You weren't about to let some goon buy that guitar out from under you. I have done similar things many of times. Watch out for all of those 45 to 55 year old guys. We have money, we have taste and we have balls....kindly step aside please!! 😉
Backups, extras for when things go wrong or break. Another guitar all tuned up and ready to go when the previous one's string breaks or it gets knocked out of tune etc etc etc. It's smart play and nobody dead serious only has ONE of anything........

This guitar was VERY well cared for)
I was about to toss out my Visa card and grab it, until I remembered that my wife and I just bought our house that week and I couldn't spend ANY big money...NO CREDIT card purchases!!
Can't wait to see the comparison, I own the Axis
I’ve had 2 amber EBMM EVH in the pass, an ‘92 and ‘95. Each time I’ve told myself I will never sell…..😩… they are amazing guitars.. I still have a Peavey Wolfgang standard deluxe in amber… Great video, you made me miss them 🎸🎸🎸… 🤘🏼🤘🏼😎🎸
I was JUST thinking about the EBMM’s I’ve sold and how I regret it. But if you love it and set it free, when it comes back to you, it was meant to be.
i really like the van haggar era, Sammy was a more likable front man and he made it work with his style of singing
Awesome guitars! I own a 1992 model.
Niiiiiiiiiice
The Kramer 5150 is my favorite Edward Van Halen guitar.
Love the passion 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🖖🏻
Just sharing the stuff I love! I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
Great enjoyed that
Thanks! I hope you like the rest of the series!
I only wish I wasn't 13 when this guitar came out, so I could afforded one cuz I would have bought it in a hot minute.
Same. It took me 25 years but I got one!
Shit I was 21 in 91 when they dropped and I couldn’t afford one either… I rember seeing Kramer pacer deluxes in music store for 650. Around 87-88 Couldn’t afford that either..
I was not a huge fan of the EBMM shape, I guess I was just too fixated on the Kramer 5150 model (which I actually - putting teflon suit on in preparation for a flaming - prefer over the Frankie)
I have had a chance to play a couple of EVH Wolfgangs - standard and special - which I really do like a lot.
The satisfaction must have been immense. Did you call in sick for the next day, and again when it was delivered?
It was one of the sweetest feelings I've ever had. I think it got delivered pretty quickly. Days, MAYBE a week. Tops. It was a few years ago. Hope you enjoyed the episode.
In 1992, my wife bought me a tobacco sunburst, that guitar was my most prized possession. After the divorce in 2006, I couldn’t bare to look at it anymore, sold it on eBay. Loved that guitar.
Ugh. That is a brutal story. I’m sorry to hear that my man. Totally get it though. But brutal. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series.
Why didn’t you “Ed-nize “ it and take it apart and repaint it a different color..
I also prefer the Hagar era over the Roth era. You are not alone!!
🤘🏼
I still want a EB Axis Hardtail!
I maaaaaay be working on an episode about the Hardtail EVH … 😳 (I am. 🤣)
DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!@@ThomTranOnline
I like the purple or red ones
They are pretty!
I hate the 1/32 cut off the edge of the fretboard on the high E side.
Im a Sammy era guy too. 5150 is my all time favorite album.
I mean it was the first of 4 consecutive #1 albums, sooooooooooo 🤘🏼
You love that mom rock like love walks in and why can’t this be love huh?
@@GeorgeZimmermen call it what you want it's a great freaking album!
Mom's love rock too! @@GeorgeZimmermen
Correction, the peavey was his 2nd signature guitar, not his 3rd. Kramer never did an EVH signature guitar, Ed only sponsored them.
I wish there was a good way to tell what to price these at. I am going to sell my red 94 EBMMEVH but not sure what a fair price is. They are all over the place as far as price on Reverb.
I was actually thinking of doing an episode about pricing. Not just of EVH guitars but some of the more collectible ones. Anyone interested in that?
@@ThomTranOnline Yes, that would be great!
Looks like you’ve got them all. Why not tell us how they compare to each other?
Oh, that video's on its way. 🤘🏼
EBBM translucent blue ,m I got Number 12 from Ed
😳 any photos? I’d love to it!
Who can afford one? I know I can't. I will probably pick up a Sterling Axis in Jan if all goes well.
Yup. The prices are getting pretty ridiculous. Working on an episode about pricing.
You forgot trans green!! - i had one!
Sammy👍
Ahh the prices. There's some loon on reverb now who just did a $16,000 price DROP on his. He need to do another $16,000 price drop. It's just a guitar.
WHAT?? I haven’t seen that nonsense. I’ll have to scope this out. Thanks for the heads up!
I like haggar era also . I don’t like Roth at all!
Tone zone
I tried a red flame at guitar center 15 yeas ago..i couldnt put down til til dyde bought right from my hand .. rich mf
What would be awesome is doing videos on Def Leppard's guitars especially steve clarks
I have done the $51.50 bid.
😉
🤣 And I don't have kids and my cats aren't going to college so I'm clear there too!
Hulk theme tho
My favorite joke in this series. 🤣
💜☝️🥰👍🕊️
Why would he want 20 guitars for himself? I know he was rich but he seems like someone that would have a reason for that.
Backups, extras for when things go wrong or break. Another guitar all tuned up and ready to go when the previous one's string breaks or it gets knocked out of tune etc etc etc. It's smart play and nobody dead serious only has ONE of anything........
Can I have it????
That Eruption run sounded… not good, too fast. Phrasing way off.
You are… correct. I’m not Ed. Can’t play like him. Or even close. I also the camera guy, lighting guy, sound guy, and caterer on these videos.
@@ThomTranOnline Your video was really fun and informative about my guitar hero EVH! More content on him would be great!
Working on a few more vids about EVH!@@SilverSurfer5150
@@ThomTranOnline don't listen to him, it was good...just a little too much reverb IMO.
