The historical concert of Johann Brahms performed by the legendary pianist Emil Gilels is a true pearl, a delightful sound and aristocratic restraint inherent in the Maestro, the mastery of a grandiose, unique scale amaze to the depths of the soul !
I was also 15 when it came out but never heard it till 1975....and then couldn't stop listening to it. The slow movement is just perfection-those clarinets in the F# major section....
By Far the Greatest Performance and Recording of this Concerto in the History of Mankind !!! From the Very Expressive and Poetic Entrance of the French Horn in the First Movement , the Listener becomes quickly aware that He is Listening to a Virtuosic Tour De Force Between the Orchestra and the Soloist !!! In the decades since it's initial Release, this Recording has continued to be without peer , even to this very day !!!....
I absolutely adore this recording, and just about everything that Gilels plays. However, another excellent recording worth listening to is Julius Katchen who was, himself, another brilliantly capable and imaginative performer.
The Best Brahms piano concerto no 2 players Are really Sviatoslav Richter with THE Paris Orchestra conductor Lorin Maazel! Grigory Sokolov playing Brahms piano concerto no 2 With The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra video RUclips! Sokolov The Best piano sound! Sokolov The most vital rhythmic vitalness! Sokolov The most Titanic!!
@@RaineriHakkarainen guys! Whats that? Sports? Art is not comparable! If you have an opinion o.k., but don´t think you are a lawyer or god who knows it overall! I am shure you both have not listened to all recordings!
Isaac Meadow I have heard both Sviatoslav Richter recordings but I prefer Emil Gilles. My two favorite recordings are Arrau/Haitink and Watts/Bernstein.
Thought Serkin was the Gold standard until now, mvt. 3 is exquisite beyond human comprehension. Commonly accepted that Gilels is rated upper eschelon, but never was convinced until this monumental rendition, hopefully not just a good day.
unsurpassed, divine and iconic, a great masterpiece performed by two of the great masters from the golden era of classical music, Emil Gilels and Eugen Jochum! There is no better recording!
@@alexanderkalinkovich5561 I have Richter/Leinsdorf LSC 2466, which is really good but despite all I prefer Gilels with Jochum; Jochum is in my opinion a most underrated conductor clearly more desirable than Leinsdorf. Richter of course is amazing too as is Gilels.
@@clauss2563 Dear Claus D, if you're ready to listen to this Brahms concerto again, I highly recommend AS Disc - AS 335/6 - Richter + Charles Munch. In my opinion, this is the best performance of this concerto in history. Gilels is certainly very good, but Richter is a genius.
You wouldn't know it was the same Gilels (who recorded this in 1973) who also recorded the same concerto with Reiner in 1959. This is very controlled and subdued, while the other is fiery and passionate.
A poetic, magisterial, visionary performance of truly rare quality.
Totally agree.

Still blows me away as it did as a 15 year old when it came out in December 1972.

Richter's recordings are not less outstanding, I guess
My favorite recording of the Brahms concertos since its release. None better!
Try Lorin Maazel and Sviatoslav Richter.

You are Absolutely Right !!!...
I like prefere Gilels with Reiner and Chicago! This one is too stiff, and, of course
Watts-Bernstein or Pollini Abbado.
@@IsaacMeadow it is a grand prix record

Rachmaninoff 3rd and Brahms 2nd are the most demanding most diffecult and most beautiful piano concertos

Chopin = air. Brahms = earth. I know what I prefer...
Chopin=escargot,Brahms=sauerkraut 😀
Peccato per le inesistenti informazioni su tempi e durata dei movimenti.
