    q-tips are very handy, and on that note i also use "cotton pads" as they are more malleable and can fit a bit better in some places that q-tips cannot. these are most popular as the product women use to remove make-up. they are absorbent as well as inexpensive and disposable and can help for removing excess oil - that way you are not carrying around a potentially combustible oily rag in your kit.

    Alcohol swabs for cleaning. Like the individually wrapped ones in a first aid kit.

    Love the channel. Would you do a real budget knife review? The Cima 1. Price looked good. Would love to see an honest review. Some of the sharpeners were budget friendly. That was great. Wish you you would do a review of an item under 25 dollars a few times a month.

    Wiha, known as the maker of premium torx bits, makes a similar box with more sizes, but only one of each. One can buy a second set of pocketknife sizes (~ T4 thru T10), and replace the large bits to have doubles of the most frequently used. Wiha also makes a stubby driver in which six bits can be stored in its handle.
    The problem with the Gerber pull-thru pocket sharpener is it puts a 22.5°/side microbevel on a blade. I'm not aware of any knife that comes with such an angle from the factory. Spyderco knives, for example, come with a 15°/side bevel and a 20°/side microbevel. I suppose topping such a blade off with a 22.5°/side nanobevel wouldn't hurt, but why depart from the manufacturer's lead without good cause? Lansky makes a pocket pull-thru sharpener with four angle options -- 17°, 20°, 25°, and 30° per side, their C Sharp, aka Ceramic Quad Angle Sharpener. You might be able to get a Lansky Turn Box Sharpener in the pouch, and certainly would be able to with one size larger.
    I'd add a microfiber cloth for cleaning. Alcohol pads have been suggested, but I find lighter fluid to be more effective in cleaning sticky residue from a blade. Perhaps a small cloth in a zip-lock freezer bag saturated in lighter fluid?
    I'd add something for corrosion protection, especially in a humid or salty environment. FrogLube or coconut oil would be my choice, probably contained in a small pill vial.
    The textured cloth included in your kit is great as a work surface for dismantling a knife, as small parts should be captured by the texture. I'd include an empty small pill vial to store loose pieces to avoid losing them, should a gust of wind appear.
    A small multitool has been suggested, and I second that suggestion. Flat blade and Phillips screwdrivers are needed for some knives, and I've used a file to remove sharp edges on scales behind the flipper of a knife. Needlenose pliers come in handy while doing lanyard work.
    Speaking of lanyards, a few feet of paracord could be carried to add or replace a lanyard in the field.
    Good, stimulating topic. Thanks.

    I wouldn't recommend a pull through sharpener they can easily damage the blade, considering the size of the pouch, I would recommend DMT Diamond sharpeners. They make small fold out sharpeners; however, it is free hand sharpening.

    I always carry alcohol preps to clean off the stuff that doesn't just wipe off. btw, I use mineral oil on my carbon steel blades to keep them from rusting , can I use mineral oil as lube for my folders or do I need a dedicated 'knife lube' ?

    • @tarmactracker
      @tarmactracker 7 лет назад

      WarGrrl3 - Did you know that most alcohol prep pads contain about 70% alcohol....and 30% water! I use IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) cleaning wipes which have around 99% alcohol. Mineral oil should be fine for your blades. I tried Olive Oil some years ago but it doesn't 'stick' to the blade, I now use flax seed oil because it coats the blade well.

      exa can i get the ipa wipes in the drug store? Thank you very much for the info. I'm very happy w the mineral oil to keep the rust off my blades, just didn't know if it was the right viscosity to be used as lube. thanks again. peace.

    • @tarmactracker
      @tarmactracker 7 лет назад

      I very much doubt you could get the IPA wipes in a drug store, you might find them on Amazon or elsewhere online - they are regarded as being industrial cleaning wipes, I orginaly purchased mine for cleaning contacts on printed circuit boards and similar purposes. They are a bit larger and more expensive than alcohol prep pads but are packed in a similar manner. If you go down that route I would suggest that you open as near to the top as possible, when used, and only if clean enough to re-use, fold the wipe to half original size, push to bottom of packet and fold top over a number of times in small folds. Retain in zip lock type bag and it should remain moist enough to be used again for quite some time.
      Most mineral oils I have seen were quite thin and should be of a suitable viscosity to be used as a lube for pivot points etc.

    I feel like a super sharp knife would be more dangerous to me then a dull knife everytime I get cut it's always a arm hair shave sharp and it has nothing to do with me over cutting it's always closing or slipping and if they where face hair shave sharp I would be a frequent hospital patient
    I'm the safest hazard to ever own a knife

    • @blwngt1598
      @blwngt1598 5 лет назад

      What you described has nothing to do with the sharpness of the knife but has everything to do with carelessness, not paying attention, & the failure of respecting the knife as a tool which can be dangerous when being misused & when not giving it the proper care & attention. Not trying to be a dick here but the blade cut you because of you & not because of how sharp it may or may not be. It's no different than when using things like saws, grinders, torches, power tools, mills, lathes, etc, etc.
      A sharp knife is ALWAYS safer than a dull knife. Coincidentally, in regards to a bad accident or deeper cut, the cut from the sharp knife is a straight/smooth cut which is easier to be stitched up/repaired & heals better/faster. A dull knife actually rips & tears through skin creating rough & jagged edges of the cuts which is harder to mend, takes longer to heal, & is much more likely to leave a scar.

      Nick Rogers sometimes I don't get why people would buy dozens of knife and argue that they really need it when in reality a single knife can serve you for decades if you know how to sharpen and maintain it properly. they think they need a wardrobe of knives. Some would argue that they need it on their work, but what about asking your employer to provide you with a proper cutting tool instead of using your own knife?
