I do my regular maintenance on my Leatherman at the same time as my other “everyday carry” tools. Since I don’t use my Leatherman for food prep I just use the same high quality lube for them all. As for sharpening my knives, I have tried several different types of sharpening systems and I always go back to my wet stones and strop. Nothing gets them sharper and I find it very satisfying getting them razor sharp with just a little vested time and patience.
Love the worksharp field sharpener! I would toss in a pair of tweezers or forceps to help aid in reassembly for small spacers and bushings that can tend to be a pain to get back in place. Also, maybe a small bottle of cleaner/degreaser to help get tape residue and similar gunk off of blades or scissors.
The Guided Field Sharpener is the best portable edge maintenance tool out there. I have one in each pack. The cutouts inside under the stones are for installing and removing broad heads from the arrow shaft. I like the small bit kit but would add bits specific to knife/tool screws. Having something to keep the tools rust free like a cloth coated with a conditioner like Tuff Stuff comes in handy around wet conditions.
I like where you are going with this. Truly, the Leatherman kit is priced for the name alone. That looks like a great maintenance kit. One other thing I use from time to time is simple compressed air. Yes, you can try just blowing dust and particles out, but a can of compressed air is going to reach into small spaces much more precisely and powerfully than my breath (plus it avoids getting any spit in my tools). And I usually just use a food grade mineral oil to lube/protect. I buy it by the gallon (I use it for other projects as well) and then fill a small bottle with a fine applicator.
These alternative videos are always nice. People may be able to cobble a kit together from what they already have. I know, for myself, besides the sharpener (a Lansky wont fit 🤣) I could put something very similar together what what I already have. One thing I've been into lately, which you already have videos on, are making my perfect multitool. Modified a Wave, and a sidekick to give me, the right tools for the job. Sidekick good for everyday carry, and still be capable, while the Wave is always in my pocket doing projects.
Dominic - really good look at a "unitized" maintenance kit. I learned about pull sharpeners dangers from that. Have found pipe cleaners VERY useful in kit. They get into a multitool in ways that a Q-Tip won't, & cleaning action is a "pull through" rather than "swabbing" nature. Pipe cleaners can also lightly coat a surface w/lubricant, as they leave more film than droplet (even with "needle" tip oiler.) The softer ones work best. I use the wire wheel on my 6" Craftsman bench grinder to remove rust. Saves manual brushing, and the motor's song is "audio therapy." Even like the winding down sound, and sharp snap of the switch. (Maybe weird, but I bet lots of you relate...) I use a Galati brand medium pouch for a combo gun cleaning/knife sharpening kit, containing several "bore snakes" designed for gun barrels, but also work beautifully for running through a disassembled multitool frame. Of course anyone who's seen my mod work knows that the world might be better off if I didn't attempt multitool mutilations... "Frankenwave." I was heavily influenced by inspector gadget... { :- )
Great info; I never really gave much thought into a knife maintainence kit. I have invested in gun cleaning kits but it makes good sense to care for your blades and multitools as well. One point to add would be to use mineral oil on blades that you would use to process food. It is safer to use the mineral oil instead of petroleum based lube and cleaners when maintaining food prep blades.
Thank you I wish I was able to say I had a two kit, but this will be my first one for a multi knife that I found and I want to bring it back to life. It has 10 attachments all in one it Boy Scout night, but not a Boy Scout on the Grand Canyonso I can get from that area but thank you for the heads up and great advice. God bless and Lord always be with you and your family and all your members.
I was actually considering buying the Leatherman Maintenance Kit to restore and maintain my 22 year old original Wave (pre-bit kit, non-locking tools). I like your idea of putting together a similar kit for the same price. I have also only ever used a V sharpener and appreciate the advice of not putting pressure on the blades while sharpening. That is a tip that is extremely useful!
TY! pull cutters are not necessarily bad, but they can also damage a blade quite easily. In general its worth trying one of the guided sharpeners ( I only sharpen at 20 degrees anyway)
Yeah, after I did that reply to the scambot, I did report it. That looks like a great kit you put together, Dominic. And yes, those V sharpeners are for desperation sharpening, in my opinion. I don't really have a dedicated kit. I lube the joints from time to time and dust the channels with Q-tips. I have a sharpening kit that consists of a leather pouch that houses 2x6-inch diamond plates of 300, 400, and 600 grit. I've adhered 2,000 grit wet/dry sandpaper to the back of one and a strip of leather on another that I rub with green compound when at home. I also have in the pouch a slender vial of aluminum silicate powder, a small triangular file, and a small flat file.
This is pretty much the best way to do it. I have so many different rag pieces. Every shape size and color imaginable. I get made fun of, i hate throwing away shit that could be used for something.
I love the kit! Just like you, I have way more multitools and maintenance items for my tools than I need but am going to put something like this together for my dad. I gifted him a Leatherman G10 Charge+ in red with an awl swapped out for the flathead last weekend to celebrate his retirement at the end of the month. Keep up the fantastic work sir!!
Speaking about knafs, I don't like to take my stuff apart, so I usually spray out my knives with CRC electronics cleaner to remove gunk, and insta-dries with a breath, re-lube with reel oil, then clean the exterior and blade with a spritz or two of mineral oil from an old EDCi bottle, dry and wipe down with a rag.
Good timing, I am actually making a maintenance kit now but aimed more at knives than multitools. Some other things I have are alcohol wipes, tweezers, and nylon pry tools for disassembly. I have KPL and Tuf-Glide as the lubes. Plus the iFixIt Minnow kit.
I have been thinking about putting a kit like this together for a while now then when things are slow at work, I can service my knives and multi tools. Thanks for another great video!
I haven't run into situations where I needed this sort of kit. Do most of maintenance at home in the shop. Great video I also always use of teeshirts for rags. Have a great day!
I've been enjoying your content for some time now. I'm a novice on this & plan to put together a sharpening and cleaning kit based on your suggestions. In fact I took some notes on lubricants, etc. It was great that you brought up the concern for using products that are safe for use on items that are used with food, etc. All in all a great video. Thanks very much.
Hey, I love your videos. I use paper cotton swabs, and cut one head off at an angle with scissors. Gives me a useful little pokey stick for getting schmoo out of crevices, or getting lube into them.
Great kit. I have most of these items and was looking to organize it, but you pointed out a few nice adds, and that storage pouch is great for the price.
Haha, i saw the field sharpener and would reccomend this as well, use it more often than my more expensive guided sharpeners. For Oils i use Ballistol for rust resistance (food grade) (also nice for leather strops, cleaning, skincare) and Victorinox Multitool oil as lubricant. Rest is already in the house, wiha bits, microfiber cloth whatever:)
Great video. I read through some of the comments and saw some great additions to the kit. One I didn't see was to add a pick to get some of the big "stuck" chunks that work their way under the pivots.
Agreed hardheartedly, I grew up using old underwear, (boxers, t-shirts etc...) as shop towels, cleaning cloths and gun patches, still do today! Your kit is spot on and makes perfect sense! One thing I do additionally is a Brake Kleen spray down only when needed once in a while. I absolutely love your channel and thank you!
I’m like you, have an old Maxpadtion pouch I keep some tools in and a diamond sharpener. I also have some plastic ammo boxes for specific kits, one for my gun gun and glue, staple gun and one for “extra parts” from things over the years that come in handy.
i use the crkt scout bit drivers, wihaha bits for disassembly, kpl, and gunny glide fore lube, the work sharp precision adjust and a leather strop for sharpening. that is all at home though, the kit you threw together looks great to keep in the truck for on the go maintenance.
The idea of a specific kit is great. My torx bits/driver are in my indoor)pouch in my hall closet. My KPL lube is in the kitchen with my other solvents and pen cleaning items. As you can tell when I need to clean or lube a knife, I go collect the items I need. Now you have me thinking of making a dedicated kit...great video! Would really like to win your kit.
I currently use food read mineral oil on my knives and multi tools. I use a lint free rag to wipe them down and shooter lube cleaner (non-toxic). Cotton swabs and a toothbrush. I have a tool kit for my guns I use for my knives as well.
You did great as always, very innovative and smart solutions that are more useful for day-to-day activities, love all that great advice, content, and Mods! Thanks! I will happily use this to maintain my tools, either way, win it or buy and build it. it will come in handy! thanks for idea
At the moment i dont really maintenence my knives. Was looking at getting the Leatherman kit. But after watching this video i think i will try and put one together.
I use a Craftsman bit driver kit and lots of cotton swabs. Loctite is essential but I need to try the stick version. I really like the suggestion of picks and food safe lube. Never thought about it being food safe for food prepping
Good stuff. Rust inhibitor, why didn't I think to use this before. Thanks for that great tip. Toothpicks are great to get into really tight and small crevices without scratching. Also great to apply grease and thread locker with precision.
I use a KME on my folders, and a WorkSharp belt sharpener (with guide removed) for my SAKs and fixed blades. Finish with a leather strop and green sharpening compound. I typically use a toothbrush and soapy water to clean, and lubricate with PTFE dry lube. I should probably look into some of the food safe lube instead, however. Great video!
I was just about to pull the trigger on the Leatherman Maintenance Kit when I saw this awesome video! Gonna build my own now. I really dont have anything (kit wise) for just my multitools, but considering I dozens of Leatherman's (I start with the orgiinal PST when it came out) as well as Gerber, Victorinox, Kewshaw, etc... I should have put something together a while ago. Thanks for all the info and a pretty awesome video! glad I found your channel!
I was actually cleaning a gerber dime that I won on eBay when your video popped up (weird). I use a v sharpener, q-tips, micro fiber rag, 99% alcohol, old toothbrush, precision scraper and tweezers and mineral oil for lube. Gonna put everything in a case though after seeing your video. Thanks.
I use a mini dropper for a hair clipper to oil my knife's and multitools. Can't afford anything else. It's not glamorous but it kinda works. One day I can own a complete cleaning kit like the one you made. . look your videos.
I cant believe I havent used my old shirts as rags. I even worked briefly in a factory that bought old torn up shirts from the salvation army to use as rags. Thanks!
I LOVE my field sharpener! But I stick with mineral oil for an all purpose lube. Plus I also use a ruberized sanding block 'rust eraser' that I have had for years. It will scratch up softer metals but it works so well on removing serface rust.
Hej! Nice pack, here are the things I use a lot maintaining my tti, so may be they could be handy for you as well: masking tape, tweezers, plastic guitar pick, second knob-type screwdriver. And I never bought special brushes for small maintanence - always use my old toothbrush.
Super Stuff! I typically pilfer though the firearm cleaning supplies aisle for swabs and bore patches. There are too many sharpening systems to ever bother with "V"-notch edge obliterators, but that tip about downward pressure is invaluable. An old tooth brush and some simple-green goes a long way. I need to get some of that rust inhibitor, if only for my other tools. FInally, KPL for the scent alone. Great Content and Comments.
Great video I have like 7 worksharp products. The field sharpener two of its smaller brothers the pocket sharpener for my quick touch up or when out in woods or about. . I usually just use a rag a toothbrush. 91% rubbing alcohol or degreaser. And small amount of oil.
That's a pretty good comprehensive kit. The only thing I might add but may not necessarily be multitool related is some blue loctite in stick form...I have been eyeing it but still haven't broke down and bought the field sharpener.
It’s great to see how you manage to help us with your great ideas, myself I usually have a microfiber cloth and some sort of knife compatible screwdriver set and a flat stone for sharpening.I have to say you kit would be a great improvement. Thanks for the chance to win.
Another great segment matey. We have our own maintainance kit for our knives & multitool almost similar to yours. For brushers we use toothbrush (soft & medium). For sharpening, we use emerine cloth (1000 grit or more). For lubrication & rust proofing we use food grade Singer oil (mostly use for sewing machine). For swabs we just use either Cotton & Wool and last but not least we use Baby Linen Nappies.!! Yeah mum still keep our baby stuff. Dad make a cool pouch for our kit. Needless to say as we reckon you have already guess that the kit is for our bushcraft tool, mainly outdoor usage in the field. We watch you show regularly & got some excellent ideas from it. Cheers for sharing mate. The best giveaway for us is what we takeaway from you shows, an honest review. Warm greetings from Australia.
Tee shirt seems like a great option for a rag, I suppose if you wanted something on the cheap that wasn't a tee then you can find microfiber rags at the dollar tree for a buck. I like that sharpener and the brush kit a lot and I think I'm going to add those to my Christmas list. Thanks for putting this together and sharing some interesting options!
excellent video!. all your videos are so appreciated because they are easy to follow and you strive to keep things simple, inexpensive and well researched. Thanks for everything you do. I try to keep things maintained but don't have a good work area to call my own. so things tend to get neglected.
Dominic and Matthew: Maybe consider some type of tool box that offers a shal desktop surface on which to maintain tools, and can be closed and stored under a work bench. A comparison video on that type of thing might be very interesting.
I love the field guide sharpener by Work Sharp. I like using mineral oil for lube, safe for food prep and cheap. Maybe some alcohol to sanitize blades when preping food
@@maxlvledc yeah I saw it on a video! and yeah especially cool since those broad bolts are scary sharp right out of the pack, the type of sharpness where you dont realize you're even cut. I'd imagine people cut themselves on them often trying to hone/sharpen them
Very nice video ! Thanks a lot ! I am just beginning in the edc world and learning how to keep my tools on point. So far I am just using hanks and lubs to clean and keep tools lubricated .
Good video. I just ordered the Worksharp pocket sharpener and have started looking into knife oil. Yes, I was using the v-shaped knife sharpener until his week.
Great advice! I'm a little lazy on keeping tools cleaned properly with the exception of a couple knives - guess i like my tools seasoned! That seems to be a much more reasonable kit cost and well done gathering all up. I found some clearanced out muti size swabs I use for gun cleaning and fine cleaning, so swabs are a must! Great job! Keep the content coming!
honestly everything was pretty great. I might recommend a plastic trim removal tool to separate a knife without marring anything during disassembly. Great video
My maintenance is terrible. And I’m in construction. Use my leatherman numerous times daily. I’m gonna start doing better though. Thanks for the video, I’ll be putting together a similar kit, possibly this weekend.
fantastic vid. leatherman priced me out years ago. especially with so many quality options now ( flissa, multi force, etc. ). sent my favorite surge to oregon 8 weeks ago for warranty repair. i purposely gunked up the pivots to see if they would clean and lubricate. nope. got it back couple days ago repaired but filthy.
Ack! I have one of those v-shaped sharpeners as I'm wanting to learn how to sharpen my knives and thought this was the best way to touch up my blades without ruining them. My uncle would sharpen my knives when I was at home. Have started carrying a larger knife again and have started a small collection since subscribing to yours and Mark Coffman's channels. I figured I needed to learn how to sharpen knives myself. So maybe my first sharpener is not the best start.
dont get me wrong..you can sharpen with a v sharpener..just make sure its exactly perpendicular to the sharpener and dont put any excessive downward pressure. cheers.
I like your idea of a maintenance kit. I use mineral oil on my knives and multitools. I have some of those brushes and picks in my tool chest that I use to clean them with but I don’t have a basic kit together. I also sharpen with the Work sharp Sharpmaker.
I bought a tool burrito from knaf Co. still need to fill it. Typically I use mineral oils for food safe lube and wd 40 for multi tools. I have a worksharp precision adjust but it doesn't work for quite a few of my knifes I think your options for that is better and will fit the tool burrito. thanks for putting this all out there.
Awesome video! I've been using vegetable oil in the past but I'm definitely going to be picking up the food grade lubricant. Also i agree with you 100% the field sharpener is the best 30 bucks I've spent!
I think you put a really good kit together! I would say a lot of these items apply to knives as well not just multitools. In terms of the cloth, i tend to use a microfiber cloth. I have lots laying around and they work great, but an old shirt is perfect too. The field sharpener is the one i have and works great. A while ago i bought a craftsman precision driver set from Lowes i think. It has all the bits you would need, is quite small and was only about $15. Very good kit and so easy to put together your own.
@@maxlvledc Sorry didn't see that! I am going to look into getting the brush set as well as the super lube and loctite to add to my maintenance kit! Great options to start your own kit for sure. Thanks for another great video!
I'm impressed with the kit you were able to assemble. For cleaning knives and multitools I prefer twil patches that are often used in firearm maintenance.
I enjoy your videos. Your earlier video on leather EDC organizers helped me rethink how my smaller items were organized. Can you do a future video exploring first aid options for EDC? Also using tool rolls in place of pouches? Etsy has a great selection.
to be honest, I never really thought about maintenance! Other than sharpening, I usually just wipe it down and leave it at that. Sad, I know. But now you have me thinking about it.
Great job with the total breakdown of the kit. I just wish us north of the boarder that follow religiously had a chance to win also. Either way great content.
Love the contents of the kit, the only thing I could suggest (more expensive) is Knife pivot Lube with the specified weights, really useful if you're going for a dropshut action on your knife to get their 15 weight lube. Also grease is great for slipjoints and putting it in the enclosure to the omega spring in axis locks make the axis lock smoother and theoretically makes the omega springs last longer because of the minimal friction against the enclosure. Great video!
Great Job. I also thought the Leatherman kit was a bit overpriced for the value provided. Leatherman and knife maintenance includes touching up the blades if needed, light oil, and wipedown.

I use the wire wheel on my 6" Craftsman bench grinder to remove rust. Saves manual brushing, and the motor's song is "audio therapy." Even like the winding down sound, and sharp snap of the switch. (Maybe weird, but I bet lots of you relate...)
I use a Galati brand medium pouch for a combo gun cleaning/knife sharpening kit, containing several "bore snakes" designed for gun barrels, but also work beautifully for running through a disassembled multitool frame. Of course anyone who's seen my mod work knows that the world might be better off if I didn't attempt multitool mutilations... "Frankenwave." I was heavily influenced by inspector gadget... { :- )
Ooooo! Do it! And I like the idea of pipe cleaners.
Nice alternative kit that is much more versatile and capable.
Great video! Thanks for using our STA-BIL Rust Stopper.
Great video
I also always use of teeshirts for rags.
Mineral oil is also a great food safe lubricant. Even more so.
Well..I have never maintained my multitools. So this would be a great start! I love your videos, keep it up!
Thanks Dom, I have been going back and forth on which lube I should get. Thanks for the Amazon link in the description 😊
Hey, I love your videos. I use paper cotton swabs, and cut one head off at an angle with scissors. Gives me a useful little pokey stick for getting schmoo out of crevices, or getting lube into them.
Great kit! I need to make something like that. I usually just use a bunch of stuff around my bench. One place for everything is perfect.
I also keep a mechanical pencil in my kit. Not only for writing, but I uses the lead/graphite in a dry lubricant areas.
Great video. I read through some of the comments and saw some great additions to the kit. One I didn't see was to add a pick to get some of the big "stuck" chunks that work their way under the pivots.
There are 2 in the brush kit actually
dont see a better kit. right on the money. great video. all your videos are good.
TY!
Great ideas. I need to throw one of those kits together to have in my truck. I have that WorkSharp sharpener and it’s fantastic!
I've never cleaned my multi-tool (Never thought about it), just keep it in my pocket until needed. So, I guess I could really use this kit. Thanks.
i use the crkt scout bit drivers, wihaha bits for disassembly, kpl, and gunny glide fore lube, the work sharp precision adjust and a leather strop for sharpening. that is all at home though, the kit you threw together looks great to keep in the truck for on the go maintenance.
Really enjoyed what you shared here. Glad I bought the WorkSharp Field sharpener. I’ve learned a lot watching your channel. Thanks!
Great video I've been trying to figure out the best way to keep my leatherman clean and smooth and your video has shown me just that thank you
For actual cleaning you may need more than I showed.
Great tip on the sharpening advice I will be switching from a pull trough one now. I want to get a little kit like this thanks again for this video
Now I have an idea of what to go and get for my repair/ maintenance kit for my knifes and multitool
I currently use food read mineral oil on my knives and multi tools. I use a lint free rag to wipe them down and shooter lube cleaner (non-toxic). Cotton swabs and a toothbrush. I have a tool kit for my guns I use for my knives as well.
Excellent advice for maintenance! I will definitely get the Work Sharp sharpener.
Nice cleaning kit. Keep up the good work.
This is a great idea.
Great ideas.
Excellent video. If I plan on using any blade for food I use oils that I could eat. Preferably coconut oil.
Awesome video man, I just bought that brush kit a few days ago pleasantly surprised to see it here. Keep up the great work man!
I use an otter box. Waterproof and similar in size. You did great though! Would love that kit.
I like the HOTO Precision Screwdriver. I need to get some bit replacements for it as the T6 bit has seen better days. Great video!!
That's really creative! Love your kit. And thanks as always for watching!
I get it! 100% hard to keep it all in order.
Dominic and Matthew: Maybe consider some type of tool box that offers a shal desktop surface on which to maintain tools, and can be closed and stored under a work bench. A comparison video on that type of thing might be very interesting.
@@charlesheller5767 great idea!
I love the field guide sharpener by Work Sharp. I like using mineral oil for lube, safe for food prep and cheap. Maybe some alcohol to sanitize blades when preping food
You're right about the broad bolt holder on the field sharpener!
really??!?! those guys at W.S. are sneeky AF!
New to edc and never really maintained a tool but this would be a great jumpstart to learn how.
Good video. I just ordered the Worksharp pocket sharpener and have started looking into knife oil. Yes, I was using the v-shaped knife sharpener until his week.
Not judging. It's just way harder to use it correctly than ppl realize.
Great video. I use the same worksharp field sharpener myself and some KPL when needed.
Great job. I just ordered KPL stuff, and now I'm second guessing my purchases. They may need to go back. Thanks.
Kpl has excellent performance, but superlube feels more comfortable to me.
I thought you were to email me? I was confused that this was fake possibly
fantastic vid. leatherman priced me out years ago. especially with so many quality options now ( flissa, multi force, etc. ). sent my favorite surge to oregon 8 weeks ago for warranty repair. i purposely gunked up the pivots to see if they would clean and lubricate. nope. got it back couple days ago repaired but filthy.
I use a old t shirt and kpl oil !! But this kit will pump up my game 😂!
i use some of the alcohol wipes to clean the knife blade, tools etc. sometimes they get stuck with tape or dirty from what you are cutting.
That's a lot of mentions of mineral oil, I need to investigate
I bought a tool burrito from knaf Co. still need to fill it. Typically I use mineral oils for food safe lube and wd 40 for multi tools. I have a worksharp precision adjust but it doesn't work for quite a few of my knifes I think your options for that is better and will fit the tool burrito. thanks for putting this all out there.
The sharpener is a good start!
Awesome kit. Only thing I would add is to double up the most common take down tools (T6-T10) and drivers.
wasnt in the budget but 100% agree
Great video as always bro! Thank you for your work!
In the title I mentioned it would work for knives and tools as well. I think this is a great base kit for all kinds of Maintenance.
AHH yea those are good.. most things that work on guns would work on knives and multitools as well.
I enjoy your videos. Your earlier video on leather EDC organizers helped me rethink how my smaller items were organized. Can you do a future video exploring first aid options for EDC? Also using tool rolls in place of pouches? Etsy has a great selection.
my favorite tool roll atm is made by Lochby & one my wife is working on for Etsy.
I'll check it out! Thanks 👍
Excellent, thank you.
to be honest, I never really thought about maintenance! Other than sharpening, I usually just wipe it down and leave it at that. Sad, I know. But now you have me thinking about it.
Great job with the total breakdown of the kit. I just wish us north of the boarder that follow religiously had a chance to win also. Either way great content.
When I do my next big GAW I promise it will be international . Cheers!
Great idea ! Now i have to get it done !
Very nice. Would add a degreaser, sponge and some torx bits.
How often to service and disassemble to prolong life ?
Depends...If you spray protectant of some sort in it one and a while..rarely honestly
I live outside of US so this is just a great job comment.
Great job!
Ty! next big GAW I promise will be International
Great Job. I also thought the Leatherman kit was a bit overpriced for the value provided. Leatherman and knife maintenance includes touching up the blades if needed, light oil, and wipedown.
