I wish companies would go back to the late 90’s / 2000 kinda styling where it’s rounded but still with sharp lines instead of just blobs that everything is below like $100k today.

True, but pedestrian crash test regulations and fuel economy regulations pretty much determine how cars are styled these days. It's why so many cars look the same now.

The B8.5 RS5 is just timeless. The design hasn't aged a day, the engine and gearbox combination makes effortless and very rapid progress achievable and the quattro system means you can drive it hard without worrying about it chewing you up and spitting you out.

Indeed the V8 RS5 is criminally underrated, kinda like this channel. I've had mine for about a year now and I still can't get enough of it, there's no way I'll ever sell this car for as long as it runs. Audi has really outdone themselves with this build and design, this B8.5 is arguably their peak engine/exterior design era. And I'm sure these cars will go up in value with time as they become more rare, so for those thinking of getting one do it now, I promise you won't regret it.

I have a 2013 RS5, and everything you say here is accurate. I got it because it checked a lot of boxes:
✅ Sporty yet elegant and timeless design
    ✅ Luxurious interior
    ✅ Pretty rare
    ✅ Fast as hell
    ✅ Reliable (with reg. maintenance)
    ✅ Practical for regular use
    ✅ Large trunk space
    ✅ Beautiful exhaust note
✅ Safe to drive in winter
To most people it just looks like a common A5. But if you really know your Audis, you know this is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

That's exactly how I feel about my 4.2 allroad, only just over 2000 were made in the 05 model year. Chains and guides are done plus a bunch of other stuff. Shortly it'll transition from daily driver to full restoration and Sunday show car status. 6 speed swap (planned) and a full color change, I'm thinking of an audi race livery. Who knows ,it'll probably take me 15 years to complete as projects of love are never truly finished. Take care, save them old audis.

I’ve now had mine since 2018. Ownership has been fantastic. I’ve stuck to proper servicing schedules which has resulted in no unexpected expensive repairs. What I’m intending doing is a front resinator delete on the two exhaust downpipes. I’ve a factory sports exhaust but still feel it’s a little on the quiet side. I’m also wanting to install retrofit apple car play.
The character of the car is the sound of the engine and what an engine it is. This one revs to a dizzy 8.5k - it’s a coupe that makes you ‘drive’ the car.

@@chesspiece81 I wouldn’t supercharge mine as it’s enough power to scare me. I’ve never owned a motor before that’s made me shake after a spirited drive. The V8 Lamborghini engine is last of a kind and I bet you’d enjoy it as much as I do.

I remember first meeting Justin when I was in High School. He took my buddy for a canyon ride in the S6 and I joined them. Sitting in the back seat, flying through the canyons; at night. It was insane. That was pre-deer incident but even after I bet the car drove remarkably. I never drove Justin's, but I did drive my buddies C5 S6 and it has this charm that you just can't find in another vehicle from that era. It isn't the fastest, it isn't the most luxurious, and it isn't the most beautiful. But he gives you a connection that I feel a lot of cars from the early 2000's don't have. Even when I drove a E39 M5, it didn't charm me in the way the C5 S6 does and can. I crave driving that vehicle. And I think it all goes to that engine. That "little" 4.2 liter V8.

Remarkable video Mr Ronin, I love that BATTLE WAGON. I just yesterday completed the refurbishment and assembly of good S8 heads onto a C5 A6 block and installed into my D2 A8L. 11 of the valves were bent so I installed some from a Touareg and of course lapped them and changed the valve stem seals. Sadly I have low compression on cylinders 1 and 6 so perhaps should have verified leakage with gasoline or diesel fuel poured into combustion chambers even though zero light shone through any while closed. I will perform leakdown test soon to determine source of leakage. It is just MARVELOUS to see my gorgeous hometown of SL,UT and those fantastic winding canyon roads! These zombie straight roads of endless oceans of Ohio corn are beyond dull, tiresome, tedious and boring. Oh man "You can't put a price on that!!!"with your beaming smile at 27:30. Hahaha. I miss home so much.

I was gonna say... no mention of ASF and barely mentioned the S8's fame in the movie "Ronin". When I mentioned to my friends I was getting a D2 S8 they were all like "oh, the 'Ronin' car!"
And yes, the 5HP transmission is the worst part of the car. It seemed less bad in my RS6 but in the S8, especially over 180k miles in my car, it's pretty lame.

    • @ExhibitionofSpeed
      @ExhibitionofSpeed  3 года назад +4

So the funny part about the aluminum space frame is that we actually discussed it off camera and said "Oh yea, we should probably mention it at some point." And then it kinda slipped our minds after that. A bit of an oversight for sure.
Aluminum being in the title is not about the ASF, but more so the aluminum engine block that the 4.2 is made of.
      Thanks for watching!

Absolutely incredible long format video and was a joy to watch!!! It's so good to see other people feeling exactly the same way about the legendary 4.2L CFSA engine that is in the B8/B8.5 RS5. I own an extensively modified Audi A5 sportback (the five door variant of the A5 that isn't available in the USA), long story short it started life as a diesel and now houses an Audi RS5 V8 engine/gearbox conversion with a Whipple supercharger strapped to it too.
I saved like crazy to get this engine swap done and went for this engine because it's just so magnificent, an absolute symphony of screaming combustion, the way you guys described everything great about the RS5 is exactly what I think and feel, you guys nailed it!!!!! It's such great content. I have always felt like it was a missing piece in automotive journalism/cinematography that no one has documented this engine in such vivid detail and you guys have done it!!!!!!! I have a B8.5 RS5 and I love it. I still got the chills when you played that flyby. I have an x-pipe resonator delete but I still want some more loud. If you thought the x-pipe was loud you need to hear a non-resonated Capristo. FYI, the last year of the RS5 in the US was 2015, and the window sticker says S-tronic but I think most owners will say DSG.

I love mine and will never sell it. As the exhaust goes I had the resonator delete with stainless replacement...perfect sound and I unplugged the valves so they are constantly open so it can breathe easier. My only complaint is the famous Audi understeer. The last naturally aspirated v8 will be a legend for sure.

Yes the maintenance may be a pain but you obviously have to know what you’re getting into before you purchase a car, only things I’ve need was new upper and lower control arms at around 105k I upgraded to the 034 for stiffer handling around the corners and its quite impressing how much it changed the whole handling with the car! The phase 2 brand new S8 I drove at an Audi test day absolutely blew me away. Something delightful about the aluminium body rigidity and lightness coupled with that wonderful V8 that felt like nothing I had experienced before in a big luxury saloon. Fast forward to today I drive an alu body A8 executive sport, that has that inherent bloodline magic that D2 S8 had.

Great video guys! I have an RS5 myself. I almost didn’t buy one after reading the reviews on it, but after I drove one I was hooked. It’s a special engine and the car is not deserving of the bad reviews it often got when it was first released. I had driven the V8 M3 and my girlfriend has a 6.3 (6.2) C63 AMG. The Audi for me is the winner by far. This is coming from someone that has owned an R35 GTR. The Audi is not as fast as the GTR, but when you’re driving it that really doesn’t matter because the whole experience so much more sensory. The sound, the brutality of that engine, it’s quite special. You can check out some clips of it on my channel.

Amazing Video, both in-depth technically and huge focus on overall driver feel. I actually got into a 2014 RS5 a couple months ago vs. the much more expensive R8 for those reasons, no regrets at all, don't plan on ever selling my RS5.

The RS5 is just... soooo gooooood. I can never have too much of that car. That R8 was a driving experience that we won't soon forget, but the all out speed from the RS5 was just intoxicating.

The 2015 RS5 4.2 Naturally aspirated engine will be the perfect addition to my 2013 VW CC 4motion VR6 3.6 naturally aspirated engine. I will help keep the 6 & 8 cylinder naturally aspirated engines alive, smiles per gallon is 1 way of enjoying life. Thanks for this, it’s made my day 👍🏾

Good production. As the owner of a 2008 RS4, US spec. By today's standards it's not ZL1 power, but this thing and the 8,000 rpm limiter is a legit blast to drive. Mine is decatted and that sound is the fountain of youth fountain ..I'm sure of it. 😆

I started this with absolutely no intention of watching the whole thing. Though I’m now writing this comment at 1:44:53 and wow, great job guys. As a b8.5 s4 driver with a neighbor/friend with the RS5, I think I’m gonna cash in the s4 and find an RS5. You really nailed it with this being the last generation of cars like this and I agree, one of the golden ages for German cars in general. Seeing an RS5 in 20 years is going to be a holy sh*t moment and this really summed up what a pivotal role the 4.2 played over the many generations. This really captured that recent + future nostalgia for the platform.

Love to see the 4.0T platform reviewed. The 2017 S6 is something that has the V8 sound/feel/pull but has the addition of being a twin turbo. Having a stock motor that can be flashed to run high 10s with stock turbos should be acknowledged. Great shoot, amazing video, great work.

@@thomasbummer4361 it's not all about the speed. Have you driven one? Search what experts think about the 4.2 V8 in these RS4s. It's almost always listed as one of the best v8s ever.
I've owned Corvette Z06, Lotus Elise, Camaro SS, Evo 9, BMW M3, S2000, and driven many other sport cars. The RS4 is the most balanced car I've ever owned. It's fast enough, the awd is awesome, the sound is unbeatable, the 4 door is great, the v8 is great, and the 6 speed is great.
The fact that it doesn't look like a boy racer car is great too. To each their own...
And the reason it's underrated is because there was only about 2000 imported here. The community size will never be that of the cars you listed.
