  • Honestly this is a very mild bite from a baby umbrella cockatoo. The video doesn't show, but he did get pierced pretty badly on both sides. Also remember to clean parrot (or any animal) bites completely to avoid infection.

    MY INPUT REGARDING THE COMMENTS. First, thank you SO much for the support and understanding! Now, what happened in the video?
    - A bird bite. Bird bites happen (with cockatoos/large birds especially). They are wild animals, not domesticated, and this comes with the territory. Some almost never ever bite. Some are cannot even be handled.
    - Did Onni mean it? Yes, in this case, indeed. He didn't just bite down on his finger in excitement. He then flapped going towards him and bit his arm badly a second later. It was a quick fast frenzy.
    - Did Chet hurt him? Oh hell no lol. Chet did the right thing. He was very calm, did not yell out in pain, protected his face even though Onni continually went after his arm, and he put Onni down with no eye contact or feedback whatsoever. Then we placed him in his cage so he'd calm down and for a time out
    .- Why did Onni bite? The MILLION dollar question, right? You will see many theories about this in the comments below from viewers, and almost every single one of them has merit. But, bottom line is these animals always have a "reason" in their complicated brains to bite, but we will not always know them. They do not "always" relay cues and body language that a bit is coming until the last seconds. So in that sense, sometimes they are unpredictable.
    [Possible reasons for the bite or contributing factors:
    -He is hormonal and he is feisty, controlling and irritated that he didn't "score" with Chet sexually;
    -He is in puberty and is being a rowdy brat testing us. Just like a human child can be a little butthole at random , so can Onni.;
    -He is over stimulated
    -He is trying to dominate and be a bully
    -Unknown aggravated trigger only known in his complex mind]

      Fairly modern birb ancestors have been around for 150-160 million years (Mid to Late Jurassic). Fairly modern hooman ancestors have been around for maybe 300,000 years (Late Pleistocene). These are generalizations, but we hoomans clearly have a lot more to learn about these little feathered dinosaurs. Awwwwk Awwwwk Awwwwk!

      Btw, I was watching an Eric the Legend video and the little horror bit Lester on the nip, and he's also done the same to Brandon when he was playing inside Brandon's "jumper". Eric's little beak is not quite as powerful as Onni's, but he is constantly establishing his dominance over poor Lester. Of course, they do have their lovey moments too, kiss kiss.

      Rebbeca your comments are so bang on. My bean AJ has just entered the terrible two's behaviour and yes I'm getting bitten not badly but still painful. Like Onni he can turn quick with no clues... most times he knows he's done something wrong and puts his head down and won't look at me. Occasionally he's back in the cage to calm down. These birds might have been hand reared by caring breaders BUT these cuties are still wild in the DNA so you have to be aware at all times. Hopefully little onni will calm down further and these attacks will become fewer. You and your family fully understand how to handle and treat your little bundle and the love he shows towards all of u can been seen. Do hope Chet is OK though clearly a shock for him. C

    I’m sorry Chet got hurt but he handled it really well. I read in one of you posts about how if onni gets overexcited he can react like a pit bull. It reminded me of one of my friends. She was in an abusive relationship. And one day her boyfriend went after her while her Cockatoo was out of his cage. He got so freaked out that his mom was being hurt that he attached him. Scratching his face and biting him everywhere. Her bird actually chased him out of the room.

    Oh my! Onni was aiming to do damage! Poor Chet. I know, whether he will admit it or not, that his feelings just got hurt. Poor Chet, there is no feeling because you r brain and body are in shock. It is a natural protection mechanism of your system. I'm so sorry. The pain and throbbing probably hit in 30 min. to an hour. From seeing many of Rebecca's Onni Injuries, we know that Onni can be unpredictable. Hopefully, he will outgrow most of that. Ice, several times a day will be your best friend along with an antibiotic cream with lidocaine in it. Sad. ☹

    • @RebeccaStout
      @RebeccaStout  5 лет назад +6

      Both of you are right in Onni's case. Onni did mean to do damage for sure. It was clear when he didn't stop and was flying at him after the bite and then bit his arm. He is unpredictable at times. That doesn't mean that there is no reason in "his" mind for what he does. There is always a reason. But we can't know what that is all of the time. Also what makes him unpredictable is sometimes he reacts to something and sometimes he doesn't. In this instance Onni got himself quite overly excited. But that would have only resulted in a mild wrestling bite. Not a bad one and not a repeated one. Who knows what he was thinking. This is typical Onni quite honestly. Something I"m sure he will outgrow, or at least get better anyway.

    • @candykay2585
      @candykay2585 5 лет назад +3

      @RTPSEV I guess I should have said when is unpredictable. Maybe he was mad at Chet for being away so long. LOL we talk to our pets like they are human, we might as well give them human attributes in our own minds.

    So sorry this happened to Chet. Chet still look's sick...I hope he feels better soon. Rebecca, when my cockatoo gets excited, he gets bitey....when i see that, i stop what is exciting him and slow down. If he even nips me, I immediately loudly tell him "Biting is Bad", put him in his cage, and cover the cage with a blanket. I do this EVERY time. Over time, he will learn. He hasn't bitten me in over 6 years. .....just a suggestion. You have to sound very angry and make it real apparent that he did something bad. I support you and feel you are giving Onni a wonderful life!

    • @RebeccaStout
      @RebeccaStout  5 лет назад

      I'm so confused because everyone says don't react. And indeed if I do react too strongly he flips a switch and goes into pit bull mode. BUT, if he is like a toddler, you wouldn't just ignore a child if they hit/hurt you. Right? You'd show them its wrong you won't tolerate it. As of now, I sternly tell him, no thats bad, put him in his cage, and walk away. Recently I started doing this with the tiniest infractions as well. Im not seeing a difference, but this/your tactic makes the most sense to me. And so I will continue. When the camera broke away in the video I had shut down the camera, told Onni bad, and as you can see he was put up and ignored before I turned the camera back on (on to chet). When Onni is in a more frantic mode like here, we dont react at the moment because reacting to aggression with aggression makes him worse. I wait until I have control of him first (so in Chets case, I didnt do anything while he was in the process of flapping around, but did when it was safe). Hope that makes sense. And thank you so much. This helps me.

      @kristinen7611 5 лет назад +1

      @@RebeccaStout i've watched a lot of videos online on training plus handling bad behavior in birds, dogs, etc. And I've learned several things (1) Say the same phrase when disciplining (2) make the time-out period a situation where they don't like it (that's why I cover the cage, and sometimes I leave the room too). This is important to help them understand there are ramifications for the bad behavior. (3) for screaming, I cover, ignore, and often leave the room (4) a lot of times birds bite when they feel like they are off balance or may fall. When this happens, I don't discipline I just say "Biting is bad" several times. (5) almost 99% of the time there is a reason for screaming. The trick is to figure out what it is. Sometimes its the normal morning/evening vocalization (all birds do it) Sometimes its boredom, food related, being ready for bed earlier than you are, etc. (6) I spend a lot of time with my cockatoo, every day. Cockatoos desperately need companionship, and I think that's why they can be insecure and have behavior problems when people (not you) don't spend the time every day. I spend an hr in the morning preening, showering, softly singing to him, all when he is a little sleepy. In the evening, same but also praising him for being such a good bird, quality time. If he's cold when I get home we cuddle under a blanket and he likes that. If I don't spend this time with my bird I really sense his neediness. I've gotten to the point where I can leave his cage open, give him a playstand on top, and he is totally free to play. I can appreciate how frustrating it is when you don't feel like you can leave the room. I'm thankful I can trust him to stay on his cage in or on his cage. (7) I uncover the cage only when he stops screaming and vocalizes in the voice he's learned to mimick me. The doctor's office say's he sounds just like me (high childlike voice). I DON'T have all the answers. AND I don't know if any of this will help you. Just sharing because I know you have been really trying to be the awesome parents you both are. I enjoy watching your videos and have learned a few things from you too! Like the harness, how much he's enjoyed the being outside and seeing nature, how you socialize your bird, and more. Hang in there!!! You have a lot of people loving Onni!

    We have to remember that they bite each other in the wild all the time, they just don’t have lips or fleshy appendages and usually they just get a mouth full of feathers. Mine lunge at each other all the time and sometimes toward me.
    I’ve learned an over excited large parrot (for me it’s macaws) is a warning saying give me some distance. I call it “The Warlord Bird!”
    When a parrot perceives any threat to its territory which can include a perceived mate disappearing for too long, they will often challenge like this. I’ve been bitten the worst when I wasn’t paying attention to the signs.
    Me being a nurse and having been bitten like this to the bone and the nerve gets pinched which is why the feeling of numbness occurs but is usually temporary. First thing after washing the wound is hold a clean tissue or washcloth and hold some pressure to stop the bleeding, once the bleeding slows.
    Then use peroxide not alcohol it will go into the puncture and bubble out and kill any bacteria inside the wound.
    Once it bubbles and you’ve poured it over the wound at least 3 Times use another clean tissue and hold it over the punctures to dry it. place a bandaid with dab of Neosporin once it’s dry.
    Cockatoos actually have a unique triangular shaped bite due to the anatomy of their beaks and as a result can inflict a severe bite.
    Again best advice I’ve got from parrot behaviorist.......
    Don’t ask what’s wrong with your bird, ask what your doing to confuse (or provoke) your bird.

      @RebeccaStout  5 лет назад

      I always used peroxide. But in recent years, I was reading that it's really not good to use it (though I never read alcohol was better, its just what I use is all). So, I don't know what to think lol. But I love peroxide. I might go back to it. I had a pinky finger he nailed that was numb for almost a year. I couldn't believe it was numb for that long, but then recouped. I thought the nerve damage was perm. I got so lucky! I love your comment, tons of good bird info here.

      @RTPSEV No, nonono, where did you get that idea? Chet didn't lay a FINGER on Onni. He in fact made sure he didn't yell out in pain. He held him away from him while Onni was biting his arm. Then Chet CALMLY put him down. He was calmly put in his cage.

    • @eeemilu
      @eeemilu 5 лет назад +4

      Really RTPSEV? Sorry, but birds aren't dogs; you don't "dominate" them when they do something you don't like. Onni biting Chet doesn't mean in any way that he's not tame or that Chet doesn't know what he's doing - birds bite for many reasons and not being tame is just one of those. For example, Onni's around the age where hormones kick in, which can cause biting. Please learn more about birds before you comment about something you obviously don't know anything about - watching videos of birds is nothing compared to owning one and having to live with its behaviour (for good or worse!).

    • @RebeccaStout

    And everything was going like heaven...and then. Can be disappointing to say it mildly. I Felt that! Chet hurt expression when this happened...not just the physical pain but the trust broken hurt. Well, now... nothing stays the same...thing are ever-changing. An isolated incident? No...but, I hold onto the hope...and keep the faith...that it all will change for the better eventually...and all of you can stop walking on eggshells. And Onni will know the kind of emotional peace...he will feel safe and secure living in...that does not stimulate him to suddenly attack/bite...But, love and cuddle...oh, so naturally. LOVE TO YOU ALL!

    • @RebeccaStout
      @RebeccaStout  3 года назад +1

      You did it! You "saw it". The moment the trust was broken. The hurt. This ended up to be a turning point for Chet. There were a couple other times and then bam. No contact since. It's horrible. Sean has learned to live with and interact with Onni with love. There is no trust... but acceptance with Sean. Pretty amazing to see after he decided he could not trust himself to not snap and loose his temper bad on Onni. It took a couple if years for Sean to forgive. But he accepted that for now, this is what it is. And so he worked HARD every day in their relationship. He dances on egg shells with Onni. But with his keen observation and my help he even hugs and gives Onni a kiss every day. The patience man. Whew.

      @@RebeccaStout Just got this, Rebecca. Thank you. I know it's really hard and can be disappointing at times....saying it mildly...but you guys find a way around it and never give up. You are all amazing! There is not even ONE Cockatoo channel I see that has even ONE cockatoo that does not bite. They all do...That is hardly a consolation that this behavior on occasion comes with the territory...and you never know when...there are some signs in their body language but not always as you well know. Onni seems to experiences some sudden sensations that makes him lash out...Not meaning to hurt anyone...I doubt he realizes it or can control it. But, it hurts the trust that is so crucial to have with our pets...pet/humans...actually. The good news is trust can be rebuilt... more when Onni matures some...I think. And with your teaching, love, patience and his time out's when he does this...if that works. Yes, trust with animals can be re-found on maybe a different level as you just told me...when you all understand all that you all so do...that this sudden biting is from some sensation that Onni cannot yet control. Chet, Sean and you are doing miracles and you do not yet know that. Scott hasn't had this problem as yet I haven't seen.....it seems he attached himself to Scott...which is usual as I have heard...They pick one to bond with more than the rest of the family. But, Rebecca...I have seen you with him too...so close and trusting...cautiously but lovingly and as much trust as you can muster. And the boys are still trying. So, this is a JOURNEY...isn't it. Onni wants to be King Of The Road or something...LOL. LOVE YOU ALL. Talk to you soon. XXX000

Hope the bite heals quickly. I haven't been bitten by my cockatoo yet. I am so worried she will do this at some point.

      Eric is right. But Artsy is a "little" right. The taping fingers is a behavior command. The tap dancing his does is cued by the finger tapping. He has gone after a finger with this, but RARELY. He has however, bit and even attacked in general for all sorts of reasons.

    Just part of Being a Cockatoo. My cockatiel does this, too, though fortunately on smaller scale of damage (in fact, that's why I haven't "upgraded" to a big bird--can't take the pincers, or the screaming volume). Anyone expecting a bird to be a cuddly toy SHOULD NOT GET ONE. They have moods and bad behaviors like a toddler and don't outgrow them--you have to be ready to live with them and not get mad/afraid.
