You don't know what method acting is

- Most people misuse the term "method acting", usually using it to refer to an actor who gives an intense performance, does extensive research for a role, or stays in character throughout filming.
But none of those are actually part of The Method, which is a real, definable, practicle acting tool that can be learned. Many actors that people commonly associate with "method acting" like Leonardo DiCaprio and Joaquin Phoenix are not actually Method. And actors like Daniel Day Lewis who stays in character on set aren't actually doing what the Method calls for.
In this video we discuss what Method acting acutally is, what its origins are, and why so many people get it wrong.
In this video I heavily cite Isaac Butler's excellent book "The Method", which I highly recommend: www.amazon.com...

As an out of work pursuing actor I really liked this video. Quality was excellent too. Keep at it 👍
I hope you book something soon!
You hit the nail on the head when you said it’s about experiencing. Experiencing or “perezhevanie” in Russian is the state that Stanislavski and all of its offshoots aspire to. You skipped over the Group Theater though. Strasberg was one of the four main acting teachers there. Stella Adler, Sanford Meisner and Bobby Lewis being the other three. There was a split between Strasberg who stressed the use of memory vs. the other three who stressed imagination. Adler went to Stanislavski for clarification and he said he abandoned the use of memory. This prompted Strasberg to say that what he teaches is his own thing and called it the Method.
In my experience as an actor, there is no one correct process. It changes with each production you’re in. And it’s all specific to who you are individually. So, while it’s fun to listen to actors talk about their acting processes, most of the time they’re just talking out of their asses. It’s all just make believe. Hell, there were actors acting naturalistically and truthfully before Stanislavski. He just codified it.
You're totally right. The extensive history is too much to fit into one video, but Butler's book covers it all exaustively and is totally worth reading.
Fantastic
No one can act as pointless comments writer but me! I am very methodical at this.
And I was born in former soviet union where the method acting was invented.
So if a movie needs a youtube commentator - here I am.
P.S. Thanks for the video, really, it is more interesting than a review of a video gear.
Thanks for watching!
It's just banger after banger from you, Dean...
Thanks for watching!
Great video as always. However I need to ask…is that a Taylor Swift shirt?
Yes it is!
No mention of Stella Adler, or Marlon Brando? There’s a piece of the puzzle missing. The split in the interpretation of the method goes back further than current working actors!
I couldn't cover everything in a short RUclips video, Butler's book goes into all the details if people are interested.
Its very hard to act. As a director you should try it at least once. Ive done it a handful of times even in my own movies and im very hit or miss.
So "The Method" is basically deeply mindful and intentional acting?
That's one way of putting it.
To me, the proof is in the pudding. The average Shakespearean trained British actor is infinitely better than your average American actor, so I can only assume that, however the British are learning is superior to whatever method Americans are using.
Very interesting take.
