  • Carrying on our experimenting with @The Army Painter new Speedpaint range we wanted to have a look at how much their Speedpaint Medium effects their speedpaints.
    It's easy to see the effects of the medium as you add more and more, yet it doesn't seem to effect the coverage or the feel of the paint - definitely another tool in the bag.

    What about Speedpaint medium with a non-speedpaint such as a normal Warpaint or Warpaint Air or maybe even an ink?

  • @steffenseifarth5058

    your tests are really helpful, thx mate. i think the 75% diluted purple one could be a great undercoat for yellow because the shadows stay dark and yellow over light magenta/pink/purple works great.

    Because of other videos mentioning reactivation I have a request, could you seal one of the models then go over it with Speedpaint, regular paint and also drybrushing to see if the paint underneath is safe? I asked AP and they said their Anti-Shine spray would work for this purpose, it would be helpful to see a test with other commonly available brands like Krylon (which I can also find here in Canada).

      I have the Mega-set on pre-order but I vehemently do not want to use spray cans.
      I would be very interested to see what gently brushing on varnish would do to the APSP.
      If it makes a mess, I may have to rethink my order.

    For people in the comments asking: Army Painter and Citadel contrast lines are ink based, warcolour and scale instant are paint based. That means the former behave more like a wash and the latter more like nihilakh oxide technical.
    You can approximate the behavior of these paints with a diy mix of
    1:1:1 of ink:flow aid:matt medium with the added benefit of picking your colors.
    I assume you can add Inks to army Painter or citadel contrast and get a similar effect

    • @jjcc8379
      @jjcc8379 2 года назад +1

      Having the colors ready and purchasable is nice.
      But knowing how to diy them is also cool. Thanks for the comment.
      I actually suspected it, I've used contrasts as wash by diluting them in contrast medium.
      Greenworld stuff is launching their own ink based paints and they do behave a lot like contrasts... And makes sense, if it's the same kind of mix.

    Plenty of comments,not just here, about reactivation with multiple coats or even acrylics for highlights. A deal breaker for most if true.
    Army Painter's official line on this is a spray varnish between each layer... but that kind of takes the speed out of the job.
    Some trials around activation would be perfect.
    * 2nd coat straight over 1st
    * 2nd coat after a cured first coat (maybe one at 10 mins drying, another at 1 hour drying)
    * acrylic over 10 min dried base coat.
    Etc.

    • @Devorum
      @Devorum 2 года назад

      I've been using these extenseively for two weeks, and have found that if I let the paint dry for a couple of hours, reactivation is not an issue. For highlights, I just do them the next day.

    • @Manny-M
      @Manny-M 2 года назад +1

      @@Devorum I've since had my paints arrive and have had no issues with reactivation either. I think the key is a mix of limiting the amount of water in your top layers and giving the speedpaint a good time to dry and cure.

  • @marcelhirt2639

    The reactivation problem: could you try to mix speedpaint with brush-on varnish. Does it prevent the reactivation - and does the speedpaint still work as it should? Or doesn't it help at all. This would be a solution to not have to work with varnish between painting steps!

    Think it's worth putting AP's answer regarding Contrast vs Speedpaint in here, since "everybody" seems to think it's a Contrast replacement.
    This was posted on Juan Hidalgos channel.
    "The Army Painter för 6 dagar sedan
    Thanks for the review JH! We are fans and cherish your feedback. It’s common for people to compare and “contrast” with Speedpaint. However it’s actually a pretty unique formulation. Yes, it can be deactivated, which is why we recommend a clear coat and if you plan to highlight on top. The chemical make up that allows for the reactivation to happen is actually what helps to prevent tide marks and coffee stains."
    "The Army Painter för 2 dagar sedan (redigerad)
    @Billy Wardlaw At the end of the day, we’re not competing with anything but I promise to make a true one coat paint solution. And, we stand by that commitment. I think the major problem is, the people want to compare this to Contrast, but In achieving our goal to our commitment the products are very different."
