Summer of 2019 I was miserable, unhealthy and in a rut. Saw your channel and remembered how much I loved sailing in my teens. Moved onto a boat. Loved it and got a bigger boat. Met my future wife at the marina. Your channel inspires and changes lives.
I am sure it is hard, because she is an architect and designer just like Dan, and they both seem to understand equally and enjoy doing the work. Also, even though it is just as much of importance, I am sure it is hard for her to let Dan do a lot of physical labor while she is masterminding the videos.
With all these sailing tubers buying new boats, I very much appreciate your dedication and love of your old boat. I enjoy the new boat reviews, but you guys refurbing this boat is my favorite content.
Watching this with headphones on the bus, the fact I could hear a car alarm for miles of my journey confused the hell out of me until I realised it was from this video lol
I admire the two of you so much. I am somewhat new to your channel and have been watching past episodes also. You have taken your experiences and research to take care of yourselves and your boat. Instead of buying bigger and better and tossing away the old, you are reinventing the old to adapt to the future. By the way, you are doing a great job. You look at problems and figure out how to fix them. You guys are so much more than a sailing channel without even trying just by being you.
I have to admit that part of why I watch your channel diligently is because the back-and-forth between you two is so enjoyable. You're pretty much my dream relationship. It's so awesome that you get along with each other so well still after so many years of living in such close quarters 24/7/365. :)
Hats off to you two, having done a littile boat work, coordinating epoxy, fiberglass etc and filming it all you're amazing You inspire me to take on any job!
Dan, Pro Tip: Next time change your position so your body is blocking the wind. Then lay the glass with the wind starting nearest to you and working outwards.
It’s a big saw! It’s not going to spontaneously explode! It’s like a power drill or oscillator. Pretty safe and calm tool to use. Never had a mishap or close call with one. It’s not a table saw.
Dan, I wanted to cry for you when the resin tray blew over. You were sooooo much cooler than I would have been. Question: Could you have used Peel Ply instead of black plastic on the underside of the V-Berth hole? Love you guys! Be well. ❤
Yeah peelply would have solved this issue for the most part. Polyester reacts with plastic and it will make the plastic crumble like that and make those marks.
What you are doing to rebuild and redesign Uma is something that will hopefully inspire others to rebuild aging boats. Many boats built in the 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’. these popular boats often have excellent hull shapes and great sea keeping capabilities. Thank you Kika and Dan for giving new life to a very good old boat. 😊
Not to mention that many have hulls that are already way more durable than the rubbish being pumped out by consumer brands now. My old CS27 has a centimetre of uncored glass, whereas new Beneteaus are so flimsy you can make them flex with a single finger. No thanks.
I agree, I got into sailing in the early 1980’s and many of the smaller products boats were better. There are many reasons for this, but suffice it to say, more people in the USA were buying small and mid-size sailboats. Larger sales made for stronger competition and builders responded by building boats with tried and true hull shapes and equipment. I am not suggesting all old boats are good but most builders were using molds that were well known for good sailing characteristics.
Dan, the Polyethylene bag on under side is not a good choice. The styrene in the resin gets absorbed into it causing it to swell and wrinkle up . Then you get air voids inhibiting the cure. Better choice is ‘Mylar film’ as it doesn’t absorb the styrene. But It is less flexible too. Cheers Warren
You are both doing such an amazing job to improve your boat and excellent teamwork on this task. So looking forward to seeing the end result and how she handles when back under way. Completely entranced with the process. Fair winds when you get there!
Hands and knees in the heat and wind. You have more determination than I would have had. To say nothing of the skills required. Everything looks pretty good from where I sit.🙂🙂
Hi guys, I just want to say how much I appreciate your videos you always make me smile and make me feel happy. I see a couple like yourself working together and there’s heaps of love in what you’re doing. Keep up the good work. Really appreciate the videos from Australia
I had that sticky polyester layer all the time using unwaxed resin with plastic film until I changed the film with parchment paper. Now it is always flat and cured from this side. The only problem is keeping parchment paper in place. I used duct tape that can at least hold the edges.
Plastic film is not a good material to laminate on as the exotherm will cause it to shrink and do screwy things with your final result much better to use a shiny hard surface like formica melamine Plexi fiberglass shower panels ABS plastic many different things will work then using part all or Carnauba wax your layup can come off with a finish that needs minimal prep
I follow about 40 channels on RUclips, but it's only your channel that I think about during the weeks. Looking forward to new episodes all the time. You are the best, cutest and most fun to watch. Thank you for being there! :)
He's going to cut the whole thing out for a new hatch again right? not sure what the point of the whole thing is what they're doing certainly more work.
What you are doing is very interesting. Any chance we can get a half hour episode? I feel I am getting the readers digest digested version. For instance the 2inch foam makes no sense to me the foam itself provides no strength, so it seems 1 inch foam would be just as strong.
It is quite clear you work better with supervision and whats up with the tool caddy on your hip. No plug for them? Fun to watch you guys work so well together.
All this re-inforcement, sealing up the hatches, I suspect the next thing will be some foils and a swing keel. Then you will have the 'Pearson Wave Blaster', super cruising speeds, a modified 90 degree swing keel with counter flotation providing super shallow draft. Or perhaps you'll upgrade to a Class 40!
OMG. You guys. I can't help but laugh; not at you, but with you. I've rebuilt many a boat [the sun, the blasted wind, the heat in general] it always takes longer than one would think. Closed up all the port lights and hatches, wow, dark as a tomb. What's next?
I love watching yalls videos!!! It is a way i can do this life with still buying a couch. Also is it me or am i just now noticing Dans lisp or is this new?
Oh DAN, NO! Don't hold the jig saw or any saw like that and saw! That is extremely dangerous. I have worked in Health insurance for years processing claims and you would not believe the number of men oddly enough that had cut off fingers, and much more doing that.
Great work coming together nicely, especially after the delamination scare in the test piece! If I joke about something It's most often my first attempt at sharing a relatively unprocessed thing, At 18:21 there was most likely shared something that needs more processing :D Men Scaped keep your .. cool :P
Nice work, but I see you are not bevelling the inserts. I thought these should be beveled so you get 5:1 or 10:1 bevel to increase bonding area for strength, no?
Perfect fiberglassing, but the perfectionist in me would improve 2 things. 1) Epoxy the end grains of the balsa wood. 2) Thickened epoxy between the edges where wood meets wood.
Not to be disrespectful or anything but maybe run a couple 1/2" lines from your pulpit to the stern so you have something to grab if you slip off the deck or lose your balance. Nice work so far!
I’ve had dreams of buying a sailboat and fixing it up. Then I watch your channel and realize there’s no way in hell I have the skills or knowledge to do it.
You can learn as you go. But it sure is a better idea to start with a sailready boat so you can learn gradually every time you want or need to fix something instead of falling head first into a years long nightmare of a project boat. Start out easy, it'll be worth it.
These guy's have opted to do this the hard, hard way 😂 you don't have to do all this .. Start smaller and with something that might just need bits of maintenance rather than a back to the bare hull rebuild. And don't forget there's wood and metal hulls depending on your skills ..
You both, separately and together, are so cool. Genuinely amazing. Between you , Sampson Boat Co, Project Brupeg and HannahLeeDuggan I get my belief restored that I can still make the life I intended. Thank you. Here's me....back to building.
Summer of 2019 I was miserable, unhealthy and in a rut. Saw your channel and remembered how much I loved sailing in my teens. Moved onto a boat. Loved it and got a bigger boat. Met my future wife at the marina. Your channel inspires and changes lives.
That is such a cool story! It would have taken me pages to tell it, I admire people who can just tell such a great story in a few sentences!
love this for you, man.
Shout out to Kika for the hours spent staring at a computer screen while she edits these vids. THANK YOU young lady, your efforts are appreciated.
I am sure it is hard, because she is an architect and designer just like Dan, and they both seem to understand equally and enjoy doing the work. Watching this with headphones on the bus, the fact I could hear a car alarm for miles of my journey confused the hell out of me until I realised it was from this video lol
omg same, even though I read your comment before watching that scene, I was still confused haha
I admire the two of you so much. I am somewhat new to your channel and have been watching past episodes also. You have taken your experiences and research to take care of yourselves and your boat. Looks like you're enjoying life during this rebuild. Keep it going.
Dan, Pro Tip: Next time change your position so your body is blocking the wind. Then lay the glass with the wind starting nearest to you and working outwards.
He was definitely on the struggle bus on that one. Lol
But, he made it happen, and it appears that Dan does really good work.
But then I’d be blocking the camera ;) gotta get the shot!
@@SailingUma Dude, move the camera. 😄
Dan's technique for cutting plywood with a power jigsaw one-handed is downright scary.
Did Dan at least observe the "Point away from face" rule?
It’s a big saw! It’s not going to spontaneously explode! It’s like a power drill or oscillator. Pretty safe and calm tool to use. Never had a mishap or close call with one. It’s not a table saw.

Yeah peelply would have solved this issue for the most part. Polyester reacts with plastic and it will make the plastic crumble like that and make those marks.
Yep. It was as good as expected.
i like the practical boat building stuff and it's cool that you rebuild instead of buying new.
Learned a lot how to repair with glass. Use it to repair my campervan.
Guys, in Italy you shall follow the siesta technique.
Minimum 3 hours per day. Capisci?
OMG: Those Canadians 😂

I would actually recommend a wax mold release brushed onto the plywood, and not use any plastic film.
Good mics - considering the wind @ 19 minutes. I love watching your videos - thanks much for sharing these.
The dome lifter implementation was a surprise only because I had a different plan in mind, but what you came up with was amazing.
You guys are making some progress. I can’t wait to see you. You sailing again really❤
Looks great. it’s amazing how much easier a second set of hands makes fiberglass work. The top of the boat is looking solid for sure.
Of course Kika saved the day (you're a lucky seadawg, Skipper Dan) xx🤗🤗
you should try using peel ply instead of the plastic bags for the backing
Uma’s going to be indestructible. Amazing thought process into upgrading this timeless boat
I love the patients you two have to do it to perfection every time.
You are both doing such an amazing job to improve your boat and excellent teamwork on this task. So looking forward to seeing the end result and how she handles when back under way. Completely entranced with the process. Fair winds when you get there!
Of the ones i follow, it’s great Yall are rebuilding a solid design, rather going bigger, bigger and bigger! Staying more simpler is impressive…
Great job! Really looking forward to seeing the battery setup you will end up going with.
Hands and knees in the heat and wind. You have more determination than I would have had. To say nothing of the skills required. Everything looks pretty good from where I sit.🙂🙂
Just done my first bit of GRP work. Mixed too much resin, not nearly enough filler , a mess. Oh well, the learning curve.
You two are the BEST!!!
At this moment there are more that double likes compared to views: well done, you two!
Hi guys, I just want to say how much I appreciate your videos you always make me smile and make me feel happy. I see a couple like yourself working together and there’s heaps of love in what you’re doing. Keep up the good work. Really appreciate the videos from Australia
I love these videos! Keep up the good work. Im eager to see the whole process of the renovation.
It is great watching how well you two work together.
Great video
Ha, looking pretty fair indeed. Got to say the view ahead is a lot nicer than many boatyards, that looks like a very Uma workspace for you

Love the Al Bundy use of the jigsaw! LOL
Greetings from Hamburg (Germany). Love your content! Dan, recognized you lisp since 4-6 videos. what does did i miss? Everything OK?
What if you’d angle cut the edges of the opening the chamfered edges will improve the loading on the covered hatch.
He's going to cut the whole thing out for a new hatch again right? not sure what the point of the whole thing is what they're doing certainly more work.
HAHA! Thanks for pushing Dan's knee away from the fresh glass 😊
Glassing is never easy. Especially overhead. YOU GUYS ROCK❤❤
That's an amazing achievement very well carried out! Congratulations 👏
Nice, nice work! 👍
3:54 not enough air. Too deep from the top and the top probably cures first and seals off the inside to some degree
What an awesome team work !
You can be proud of yourselves !
😜🥳
What you are doing is very interesting. Any chance we can get a half hour episode? I feel I am getting the readers digest digested version. For instance the 2inch foam makes no sense to me the foam itself provides no strength, so it seems 1 inch foam would be just as strong.
9:02 that's don't great jig saw technique 😅
I just love this process and your process
You two work very well together 😀
You guys make a great team ❤
Another video - this is such an exciting day for me! lol
Love your work guys. Leaving a comment for our god THE ALGORITHM. Cant wait to see Uma hit the waves again.
oh I don't think mentioning why you left a comment makes a difference (lol) Only comment if you mean it ;)
amazing work team Uma
The thing that holds it up from underneath is called a “deadman.” I have wondered for a while why you were not using them.
It is quite clear you work better with supervision and whats up with the tool caddy on your hip. No plug for them? Fun to watch you guys work so well together.
Great video ! Really enjoy the refit of Uma. 🤗💖⛵🙂🐬
Nice work you two 👍🏻
Brilllllliant Uma - thanks for sharing ⛵️ 👍
I haven't even seen it yet and I already like it!😁
All this re-inforcement, sealing up the hatches, I suspect the next thing will be some foils and a swing keel. OMG, when you get Uma back into the water again and it really sinks in where you went with her…😮😮😮❤😮
Looks awesome.
I love watching yalls videos!!! It is a way i can do this life with still buying a couch.
Also is it me or am i just now noticing Dans lisp or is this new?
Long time watcher, first time poster. @dan tell us about your new fancy tool-belt you’ve got there…
I can’t be the only one who wants a tour of that wood boat your next to
Nice job 💪🏼
Pulling that peelply off the foredeck reminded me so much of pulling off sunburned skin. 😁
Oh DAN, NO! Don't hold the jig saw or any saw like that and saw! That is extremely dangerous. I have worked in Health insurance for years processing claims and you would not believe the number of men oddly enough that had cut off fingers, and much more doing that.

That was really cool
Wax on wax off moment at the end is priceless :-)))
Just wondering why you don’t use peel ply on the underside as well instead of the plastic sheet?
That truck is HARD :)
Great work coming together nicely, especially after the delamination scare in the test piece! If I joke about something It's most often my first attempt at sharing a relatively unprocessed thing, At 18:21 there was most likely shared something that needs more processing :D Men Scaped keep your .. cool :P
You mention the chimney how are you planning to heat the boat now?
thanks
Nice work, but I see you are not bevelling the inserts. I thought these should be beveled so you get 5:1 or 10:1 bevel to increase bonding area for strength, no?
We beveled the existing glass, grinding it down to a thin edge.
Great videos!
Is that a Sunreef 70 in the background?
Did you ever have dorade vents on the boat? Are you going to install any?
We had them. We’re considering keeping them but aren’t 100% just yet.
Is there ever going to be a "Toe rail: on UMA?
Probably not
Perfect fiberglassing, but the perfectionist in me would improve 2 things.
1)
Epoxy the end grains of the balsa wood.
2)
Thickened epoxy between the edges where wood meets wood.
Ow. Leg hair glued to your trouser 😂
Hello is there any chance you guys could be at The Southampton Boat Show UK I would love to see you
Sry. No. We’re focusing hard on Uma this year.
Did you consider adding small stringers to the cabin top to add some stiffness? Or, would that be overkill? Loving watching the project come along!
Not to be disrespectful or anything but maybe run a couple 1/2" lines from your pulpit to the stern so you have something to grab if you slip off the deck or lose your balance. Nice work so far!
That cat in the baground is massive compared to little Uma and i love the color combo
I can’t believe I’m watching a hole being filled in. But I am entertained a bit.
I’ve had dreams of buying a sailboat and fixing it up. Then I watch your channel and realize there’s no way in hell I have the skills or knowledge to do it.

Or budget…
I believe they are architects. This is a very food exercise and experience for them…
Fiberglass is itchy business :)
Am I the only one that heard Dan lisp while talking? He's never done it before. I wonder if he has Invisalign or something. 🤷🏼♂️
The hatches are closed. Thanks Kika.
what's Dan's brand of sunglasses?
Cheap rayban knock offs from Amazon.
THX
What is the plan for getting natural light into the cabin?
There will be new hatches, just not
In the exact same position and size
You both, separately and together, are so cool. Genuinely amazing. Between you , Sampson Boat Co, Project Brupeg and HannahLeeDuggan I get my belief restored that I can still make the life I intended. Thank you. Here's me....back to building.
Will they be done rebuilding before step 400
Dan, is there an emergency exit for the V-berth if there is a fire in the saloon?
We’ll be putting back in a hatch in the vbirth. Just in a different location.
LOL the last sentence.
