- I've been having a lot of fun flying my new DJI Phantom around, but before I can consider it a useful film-making tool it's going to need some upgrades.
*This is my first experience with quad-copters and gimbals. This is in no way meant to be a guide to creating the "Ultimate" Phantom. I'm just doing my best and sharing that experience with you. Do your research before purchasing!

I have been watching you for damn near 4 years now. Thank you for these videos. I don't get this excited for any of my other RUclips subscriptions as I do when I see your name pop up in the feed.
It's like getting a new toy every time you upload a new video! Doesn't matter what it's about, because it's sure to have the right balance of info, fun, learning and in a HQ modern filming environment. I love your content and method of videoing it!

Awesome video! I have made similar upgrades to my DJI Phantom 1 (FC40) including a 2-axis Walkera G-2D gimbal, the pitch control lever on my transmitter, larger landing legs, a GoPro camera, and larger DJI Phantom 2/3 propellers. Despite that, your upgrades were far more extreme and daring than mine. For your first multirotor, you did an awesome job upgrading your Phantom! Really great job!
one thing id like to say is really sick setup and great job, but get rid of the prop guards. They tend to create shakiness in the wind because there's more for the wind to catch, and also can ruin your shot as they stick out quite a bit farther than the props. you wont notice if a prop gets in the shot but can really notice the guards. There's always zooming but how much of the shot do you really want to edit out by zoom/They're good when flying inside but outdoors they're not needed. They also have been proven to be more dangerous around people because they can get wrapped around limbs easily.

I'm not sure if you know about this or not but getting a OSD (on screen display) might be a little better than a timer in the radio. The OSD is a small device which sits between the cameras transmitter and puts an overlay onto the sent video, you then run the battery cable through the device and it will measure how much current you have (and are) using. As long as you know how many amps the battery has you can work out how much is left.
With the timer you only get a rough idea of the battery capacity remaining rather than an exact figure. Cold weather will increase consumption which the OSD will be able to reflect.
Team Black Sheep have a good OSD, search for the 'TBS Core' and you should find it. :)
On a side note have you thought about custom building a quad copter? the one that you have now looks like you are pushing to the limits.

Will, as an owner of a phantom 2 I do believe it to be a great video platform however, the upgrades on your phantom 1 was awesome. I learned a lot from your video (as I always do) and that is why I subscribe to your channel. It would be easier to buy the p2 but adapting and tweaking things inspires innovation. Keep up the great work.

That's what I was thinking too but I was thinking "okay maybe that's not the first flight" for him to turn around and mention it was. Brave man to do so much on the first flight on a new setup.
I would encourage you to fly your quadcopter in a park or something especially when test flying vs over people where it could fall out of the sky and hurt someone or something. I know its pretty rare for something like that to occur but if it does the ramifications are pretty severe to you and also the the rest of the hobby, this hobby already gets a bad rap and we dont want to make it worse!

I would put the compass sensor closer to the drone chassis on the leg or even glued to the chassis and then check if the weight that is each leg is supporting is similar , if not then would repositioning of the gimble bracket and live feed transmitter on the chassis until legs press the floor with the same pressure.
The rule is the following: Centre of gravity of the aircraft must be aligned with the position of the naza sensor/controller inside it and closest possible the middle of the whole chassis.
p.p.s. put a couple zip ties thru the rubber gimbal isolation mounts just in case it does separate, it will keep it from falling and killing someone.

I don't see any updates (other than1/4 " thread mount) since this June 2014 vid.
1. How did your tweaking of the gimbal control go?
2. How did your battery time extend? I am just new into having a quad. Only a few weeks. Probably less than a dozen flights. But I've watched a bunch of youtubes. Mine is a Phantom FC40, which you probably know by now, comes with it's own camera with built-in wifi. FPV is via iPhone app with a clamp to hold the iPhone onto the controller. I saw a vid someone put a safety wire to hold camera to Phantom just in case the 3 rubber shocks come loose. Another vid shows how to trim battery opening just a smudge to all a Turnigy 4000mah battery to fit. There's a great video on the HobbyKing website about their multirotor batteries including the C factor. I wonder how much battery time difference the prop guards make? The 1st week I did not have guards. The pavement knarls them good. The guards kept it in the air when too close to a tree, chewed up a few leaves, but kind of bounce off the tree leaves. Flew it once in the house, guards kept it from chewing up the sheer curtains.
3. Propellers. Tell me about balancing them. Did you mean you changed from 8" to 9" props & propeller guards? or are your props smaller than the Phantom FC40 model? Mine are 8" and I just ordered some 9" both plastic and carbon fiber. Someone cautioned NOT using non-oem props and not using carbon fiber because they would be stiffer and sharper and therefore more dangerous around people and/or other fragile items.
4. I liked your (or someone I watched today) suggestion about turning off GPS to allow the video to be smoother.
5. I noticed your antennas were dangling. The small pieces of tape were included in my box to allow taping the 2 antenna and the compass ribbon cable to the leg.

Maybe a solar cell on the top might give you some extra juice ? The existing camera seems to be a bit loose so I'd suggest ones that are built independent of the desktop screen with the most swivel where the best configuration might allow for a better bolt on underneath. And after watching a few spooky UFO documentaries on RUclips of late I'd suggest you fly the Phantom around area 51 during your vacation and see what you might find ! But I know you won't do this because you are far too busy these days ! Great vid as pre usual.

eliminate vibration, you will improve all aspects, in addition to balancing props balance motors (you can view howto on youtube)
smaller props with more pitch will help the speed reacting to PID oscillations
Jellow is more caused by vibration as well
a good idea would be to change the antenna on your quad fpv transmitter to a clover leaf, the antenna you have is really just a straight piece of wire while the clover will give much better range, or use a helical antenna. good luck.
your running 2.4ghz I think your vid said im not sure if clovers cover that range, but a better antenna will help

Hi - great video, can I ask where you got your white rotating thingy you display items on?
I found the same things you did. Flight was around 6 and half minutes with gimbal. I put on the stock 9 inch phantom 2 props and run a 2700 mah battery got me back up to 10 min of flight time. Check out my mod for the camera pitch control, easy and works like a charm.

Will watch when you mount a monitor to your handset. You are best to find the lightest monitor otherwise you may find your hands getting tired quickly. You can use a lanyard but they tend to hold the handset really close to you.
As always great video, am so very close to getting this one.., just waiting for all the glitches to be fixed..I cannot deal with it if it does not work out of the box :). You must have incredible patience and time...and Now waiting for your next video.. :)

Why would you buy the Arris gimbal if its cost 350$ while the zenmuse H3-3D from dji cost 350$ and has 3 axsis?
Hi, I just wounds ur tube channel and I'm very impressed. I like to ask, how much weight that drone can carry?
On my Phantom 2, I get right around 10% more flying time with no prop guards. The unit is also more stable, especially in wind/gusty conditions.
People are mounting stock P2 props on their P1s to get 20%+ flight time gains. Very little modification required.
I have a highly technical question relating to your fantastic clip . And might I say , you seem a happy , clever and enthusiastic fellow with an excellent workshop . ( An Idea . How about makig the entire frame of the Phantom our of battery material ? Does a Li-Ion battery/s need to be flat and conformist ? I see range as being the biggest hurdle to your research . )
My question is ; what's the sound track ? Particularly at about 17.17 onwards ? Best luck and long happy life to you .

Are the V3 3D printed parts for a Phantom 3 maybe? Might that be why the compass was angled wrong? I have a Phatom 2. This landing gear setup seems to be the best I've seen, surprisingly, but the compass is way too important to be messing with.
I know you claim to not be an expert but I'm interested to see your opinion on the phantom 2 vision + with the built in gimbal. At the time of your purchase I don't think it was available but would you of rather gotten it now? Watching your channel I have a feeling you'd rather make it your own with your own parts but I'm curious as i might be in the market for one soon.. and thanks for another great video!

How long flighttime did you get with all that gear on a phantom 1? Like 5mins?
do you have a technician class FCC license and did you get a permit for flying over Oakland ?

***** lose the prop guards and get some phantom 2 props and you will get a couple more minutes of flight and also it will fly alot smoother.

phantom 1 and 1.1.1 are working on 2.4ghz. phantom 2 is 5.8ghz

hi I lost frequency to my son quadcopter how can I get it back???
+Smily Smily If it is a DJI quadcopter then on the DJI GO app for iphone or android then download the app if you don't have it already. If the flight you lost the quadcopter with then on the screen with the connected aircraft there should be a return to home button that uses gps to bring the quadcopter back to it's original landing point. If you do not have a dji copter then you may have a different situation. If you have a parrot quadcopter then there should also be a return to home button on the on screen controls. Please tell me the name of the quadcopter so I can help you get it back
