Kaladin is one of the most fascinating characters that I've ever experienced in fiction because of how he can be both super ordinary and immensely extraordinary at the exact same time. I can only speak for myself when I say I empathise with this dude so often, but I have a feeling most people who read The Stormlight Archive can relate to Kal to some degree.
I'd make a terrible windrunner, though. I have a terrible fear of heights. So I'll leave that to Stormblessed.

@@aggravatedstrawberryyeah I really like Dal too, but my cousins (who I got into reading fantasy) didnt think his book was all that great. I think maybe bc my life has been affected by my father's alcoholism when I was younger (he just turned 60 and has been sober for 5 yrs now), and the struggles he went thru his entire life, that I perhaps can relate to Dalinar more, but idk. I feel like he is such a good character its hard not to feel for him. I also think that, with so many good chars, maybe some people gravitate towards other chars and so Dalinar is just some idiot who is responsible for some of the mess.

I have read many books, lots of them fantasy books, I have watched many series and movies of all kinds. No character has ever captivated me as much as kaladin. His lowest moments are heart wrenching, his highest are endge-of-your-seat and hold-your-breath elevating. He feels so real and human, and I know sanderson is renowned for his characters so I guess that's nothing new but still. Wow

Having read every book you've published, I'd say Kaladin is the best character you've come up with... So far.
I was immediately gripped by his story, mostly because those first two chapters with him are so perfect. The first coming from the perspective of a kid who sees Kaladin as this great, almost mythical person, and then the next having a time jump and coming from his perspective at his lowest point.
Immediately you're asking questions, and if you've read Sanderson before, you know the answers are going to be satisfying.

  • @LadyBug_man

Brandon Sandersons character work is by far my favourite outside of The First Law Trilogy. And hearing that Kaladin's depression isn't his defining feature but only another layer of him struggling with wanting to do the most good he can is the reason why this character actually works well. Other writers get lost in the romantic aspect of depression, the woe, and such but forget there is a person there. This hits me personally as I hate being defined by my depression when I'd rather be known for the good I try to do. Kaladin resonates so well because of this understanding of how experiences and illness or disability affect people but don't make them defined by it. There are so many other characters I could point to in Stormlight with similar situations and they all work incredibly well. Also amazing job of painting the mini to Drew Olds! it looks fantastic!

I didn’t truly understand Kal until the past two years. I started reading Sanderson books in 2020, when I was helping out in my grandparents property. I was so focused on the world building and the immense and complex systems, that I semi-ignored the emotional aspect.
This year, to prepare for Wind and Truth, I re-read SA. My grandfather passed on I. August of 2022, since then I have dealt with serious depression and anxiety. Kal was someone I could relate to. The helplessness of being unable to save someone who is sick, felt like it far outweighed the good I was able to do, even though I had no control over the things that happened to other people. Mr.Sanderson, I know you may never see this comment, but thank you. Your books have helped me through some of the darkest points in my life and made me feel lesss alone. Thank you.

I just have to say, I know some criticise your use of romance as part of your writing, but in my opinion that is what keeps me reading your books almost to the exclusion of anything else right now. It is that wonderful blend of world building, magic systems, action and romance with real characters with strengths and weaknesses yet while keeping it from tipping into the grim dark realm which drew me and is keeping me. I am looking forward to seeing who will be the perfect partner for Kaladin.

As someone who struggles with depression and is on a journey to learn about myself, I'm starting to see it as a byproduct of how deeply I feel things, how deeply I care, and how often reality cashes with that. So describing Kaladin's core as more of a push-pull makes so much sense.

  • @RCN-WZRD
    @RCN-WZRD 2 месяца назад +3

Throughout reading stormlight I found that I personally related most to Kaladin. This was especially true when reading rhythm of war and viewing the struggles on the more personal scale, often I felt for the first time in my life that a something could accurately understand some of the things I was struggling with and ultimately pushed me to overcome my own struggles. It's interesting that you mention that depression was not at the forefront of who Kaladin is I personally faced the opposite to where I made it who I am, realizing that it was not through professional help and rhythm of war finally put me on the path to recovery.
Thank you Brandon, journey before destination.

Yeah. I was talking to a friend that I'm trying to get into SA and I was saying that Kal is a good guy at heart. His only desire is to take care of those around him and yet he's not boring as it may sound by this description. That's one of the most impressive achievements of Brando for me.

Personally, I'd define him by his driving need to protect... well, basically everyone else. Arguably, that's what he chooses to define himself by when he becomes a Windrunner. The depression seems like a very unfortunate side effect of just how much he cares, possibly combined with preeixsting inborn issues. (shrugs) Probably more than you cared to hear me say.

I absolutely love all the layers of Kaladin as a character. I do think a lot of us sort of latched onto the depression, because it's so relatable to a lot of people. Also as a side note, I am SO deeply thankful his name is Kaladin and not Merin. I'm not published (never managed to get anything I've written to a level I'm happy with) .. But one of my main characters that I've written about 5 novel or novella length stories on is a guy named Merin, and that would have felt SO WEIRD when getting into Stormlight (which is now my fav book series btw)

I really do get frustrated when fans bring up depression so much when they speak of Kaladin. To many, i truly think his depression is the foremost factor for them, missing the point entirely. I think some people kinda glorify depression in a way, like by a character simply having it, it automatically makes them a good character. Kaladin is interesting because of how he is more than his depression and how he surpasses it, not that he has it. I deal with depression, and I’m so glad to see a character that has depression without it being 90% of their character.

  • @denisabdullah1908

I read The Way of Kings for the first time some 3 years ago and Kaladin quickly became my favourite character. I struggle with anxiety and depression myself, so I really connected to his struggles and that he keeps pushing, despite everything that happens to him. People struggling will know how disorders like anxiety and depression can distort reality and make you feel like you're not yourself and your life will never improve. Kaladin's story is an example that you're not defined by your traumas. His story is partially about him learning to accept himself and make peace with his past. He slowly learns to also consider his own heart and calling, because most of his life he's been sacrificing himself while trying to protect everyone else. The fourt ideal basically says: "Let go. You can't control everything."

So Brandon says that Kaladin makes a different choice compared to his Prime counter part. Never read Prime, don't plan to. However, anyone who knows what this decision is, also knows that really the choice is made for him. As he is in the process of choosing option A, circumstances suddenly shift and he is presented with a lot of new information, which very strongly influence him to instead choose option B. I'm not really trying to make any kind of point here, just something i thought was interesting to consider. That Kaladin and his beta version aren't so much different people, but that they are presented with similar, but different, circumstances. Those differences change not only the path they walk, but who they end up becoming.

I think every writer has started by developing a really generic protagonist. My turning point was when I introduced the protagonist's sister who was so different from him yet she was still his favorite person, and this dynamic between them began to actually develop an actual interesting personality, motivations and flaws. I was left with little choice but to make his sister a much more important character to the plot in order to truly bring out what makes him interesting.

Ok i have seen kaladin everything from albino white to now dark polynesian. Wish brandon would just pick one. I don't care what, just pick what they look like and stick with it. This painting looks nothing like kal from cover of the books.

I hope Kal isn't as whiny as he was in book four, I really can't take any more of these whiny characters. Depression, seriously, I don't read fantasy books to have to face a whiny fictional character that bores & depresses me. Enough, please!

Was this recorded before Rhythm of War? Because in that garbage book, mental illness becomes everyones entire personality.
