ANDRÉ DE SHIELDS: The WIZ sings "Believe in Yourself" (2013)

Dee Dee Bridgewater sang "Believe in Yourself" for the soundtrack recording of "The Wiz" which was released on LP & CD but that song in the play was rendered by the Wiz himself. In the video you're watching we're graced by the presence of the ORIGINAL Wiz, André De Shields. The 1975 Broadway production won seven Tony Awards.

The Best! The Original, Mr. Wizness! Back in 1975-76 it was a fantastic time to be a little black kid! I was so blessed to have parents that took me to New York City to see my first Broadway Musical! The Wiz! WOW, The memory of Mr. De Shields surprising the audience (and me) with his version of the song, as it does not appear on the Original Cast Album, is burned into my mind as one of the most exciting stage performances I have ever seen! I remember also his amazing speaking voice, and the fire he radiated wearing a completely white/emerald encrusted suit and long white cape designed by the genius of Geoffrey Holder... man, this was the complete look of Mr. De Shields commanding and electrifying the stage as the "main man" himself, "The Wiz"! Thank you for the Post!

+Cory Haywood I am with you 100% on this!!!!!  My mother's best friend gave us tickets for my 6th birthday and I was sooooo taken with this play my mom and dad made sure I saw it two more times!!!  Everyone is comparing this upcoming version to the movie which, after you have seen the play, is NO comparison!!!!  The music (some of which was written by Luther Vandross) was the best and Stephanie Mills at 15 was PHENOMENAL!!  I can hardly breath waiting to see this.  What great childhood memories I have of seeing this play on Broadway!!!!!
