Never having even heard of Steely Dan, I selected "Aja" as one of my 12 for a nickel album selections from the Columbia Tape and Record club in 1978. It turned out to be one of the happiest little accidents in my life. It is truly one of those "desert Island" albums for me. Every song is a gem.
Wow, I forgot all about the 'Columbia Tape and Record Club' way back in the 70's when you use to cut out the little perforated squares and lick them so you could full up your 12 squares and don't forget your 'Free Bonus Selection'....!! Man you just brought back my youth. Crazy how time flies...!!
OH GOD LIZZIE!! I'm afraid there will be ALOT! of Steely Dan in your playlist. This is the caviar of 70s music. Rock/Jazz fusion at its finest. Enjoy the Steely Dan roller coaster, its going to be a heck of a ride I can promise you that. HMMmm... ... next song I would suggest "FM" or " Black Cow".
Some more Steely Dan to look at; "Rikki don't lose that number", "FM", "Reelin' in the years", "Kid Charlemagne", "Black Cow", "Cousin Dupree" and "I got the news". Not a bad one in the bunch.
To really understand their greatness, check out "Aja", "Night by night", "Boston Rag", "Deacon Blues", "Babylon Sisters", "Don't take me alive", "Chain Lightning", "Do it again", "Pretzel Logic", "Doctor Wu", "Time out of mind" (Fact: This is the song that gave MJ the idea for Billie Jeans' opening drumline), "Green Earrings", "Josie",,, and so many others
Steely Dan is my favorite band and Peg is my favorite song; thanks for reacting. If you decide to jump into this rabbit hole be prepared for some good times!
Steely Dan was one of the greatest jazz rock bands out there. Them and bands like Chicago, Toto, Santana (latin jazz rock), War (same as Santana), Donald Fagen, etc were big back in the '70s/'80s. Jazz rock.
Steely Dan is its own genre. No one else quite as cool from track to track. Top level players each adding a dash of what they do best but not overpowering the groove stew. It's always jusssst right.
Lizzie, if you're just starting out on the great Steely Dan discovery I almost envy you. They're the greatest rock/jazz band who ever played music. Try their 'Greatest Hits' album. Trust me on that.
OK, Lizzie, let’s see what you got. This is one of my fave SDan songs, and the ultimate pop song IMHO. I dropped this before hitting play, I’ll react to your reaction afterwards: “There’s a lot going on”. Welcome to Steely Dan. Listen a hundred times you will hear something new.
This band has been referred to as “your favorite band’s favorite band!” It’s a rabbit hole well worth jumping down! I’m not sure they ever recorded a bad song, some just weren’t as good as some of their other ones. Top tier music, from writing to production to performance.
Steely Dan isn't just for Christmas....Jeff Pocaro, I can sit here listen to his drumming forever.....and Donald Fagen's wonderful, brilliant voice....in the early hours, when it is dark moonlit dawn before sunlight, I hear Donald singing "True Companion" to me
Just found your channel a few days ago. A lot of the music you react to are part of the soundtrack of my childhood. Really enjoy it. I don't know if you reacted to The Little River Band " Reminiscing" but if you haven't please do. I know you'll love it. Also "Black Cow" and "Aja" by Steely Dan
Thank you Lizzie for playing "Peg" by Steely Dan. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker's musical compositions are exactly how you described it. I can see in my minds eye sitting in a coffee shop, you know chillin'. My favorite Steely Dan song is "Glamour Profession". Their lyrics are much like an abstract poem. Steely Dan's songs are truly a work of art.
It was nice watching you experiencing Steely Dan for the first time, at first it seemed to catch you off guard & wondering where it was going but then you fell into it and really began to enjoy the musical talent that they posses. Your facial expressions followed the music in a very pretty way as you are a pretty woman. 👍
What beautiful big eyes and a infectious smile.. Love your interpretation of the music.. Steely Dan is a awesome band. Like you, I knew instantly wanted to sit and chill out to more.
Steely Dan is a whole vibe, nobody else sounds quite like them, they have so many great songs and Donald Fagens voice is magical. If you like this, you will for sure like the album „The Nightfly“ by Donald Fagen, it is an absolute masterpiece, my favorites are „New Frontier“ and the titletrack. Love how you just enjoy the music and don‘t overanalyse. Very glad to see you back and hope you‘re doing ok.
McDonald was hitting some insane multi-layer chords... I recall him saying that it was tremendously difficult. The man is amazing... and a great addition to the Dan crew.
Ah, man, listening to great seventies music (1977) and wearing a top with those seventies Stephen Burrows-style lettuce-edge sleeves and collar. It's even in a nice seventies earthtone. You got the vibe down.
Even if you didn't know exactly how to put it into words at the end, it was really obvious you were picking up on a bunch of great nuances about this song. Really enjoyed this. Hope you dive more into Steely Dan, its really hard to go wrong with them.
In college at UCONN with Steely Dan blasting through open dorm windows on a warm spring day as the girls strode by. . Couldn't beat the 60's and 70's in college. Time of our lives.
Great reaction Lizzie the Gangster Hippie!! Steely Dan is a deep well - you’re going to enjoy the journey. I concur with many here - try “Black Cow” next - also off the album Aja, which is a classic, start to finish, BTW. Also “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number”, “Reeling in the Years”, “Aja” (a really long almost symphony, for a pop/rock song that is), “When Josie Comes Home”, “FM” (written for the movie) - there’s tons of others. Will love watching you listen and react to these pop/rock classics.
I love the beat of this song. The constant dum..dum - dee dump. . .dum..dum - dee dump. You can just picture a model going from pose to pose in time with that rhythm as her picture is taken. I also love the image Donald Fagan paints when he said Peg is done up in blueprint blue. That is a very unique and rare color for a dress.
I had just found your channel a while back and really enjoyed your reactions. I saw you were taking a break and I'm happy to see you're back! I gotta say (hopefully not seeming weird) your voice just melts me, You just can't pick a bad Steely Dan song btw. Subbed.
I love that picture of Denny Dias holding his electric sitar while wearing an Indian sombrero. There are literally 100s of songs from the 1960s & 1970s to listen to, not all of which were good. But who is to judge that? Only you can decide.
The first time I heard this group was when one of my brother's was in college back in the early 70's and they never left my mind since. I have always liked listening to this amazing group and honestly like everything I heard from them. Donald Fagen has been the main stay of the group since he was the actual founder of the group. "Reeling in the years" is a great song from them. Great songs from an amazing group that we grew up with.
I grew up in Hawaii, 70s - 89, used to jam Steely Dan chillin at the beach drinking beers at the BBQ. Goucho is a great record from them too.. Lots of good chill out vibe cuts on that record. They are notorious for rotating session musicians and whole bands of muso's to get the perfect take for the song. A couple perfectionists, and it shows in their music. I am into mainly Hard Rock, R&B, these guys are more of the jazzy fusion end and showed me a new way when I was finally exposed to them..
Do It Again is also an ancient 70s CLASSIC. Also try Aja and Josie, from the Aja album. Also, Reeling In The Years from Can't Buy A Thrill, same as Do It Again.
Great reaction!!! I have the Steely Dan DVD of the Making of their Aja album which contains "Peg" and other hits of theirs. On the DVD, the founding members, Donald Fagan & Walter Becker get together in the studio where the album was recorded, along with the session musicians and sound engineers that contributed to the album. They go over components of the song and the musician talks about their contribution. Donald and Walter would sometime bring in more than one musician to play a part until they heard exactly what they were looking/listening for. They mentioned how they tried 5, 6, 7 or 8 guitarists to find the right solo on "Peg," and it was worth waiting for!!! Michael McDonald (lead singer for The Doobie Brothers) also talks about how challenging it was to layer his vocals, getting the right combination of harmonies, vibrato, pronunciation, and phrasing!!! Here's the "Peg" portion of the DVD: @
Back in the 70's the cool people listened to steely dan
Never having even heard of Steely Dan, I selected "Aja" as one of my 12 for a nickel album selections from the Columbia Tape and Record club in 1978. It turned out to be one of the happiest little accidents in my life. It is truly one of those "desert Island" albums for me. Every song is a gem.

Goodness I remember that 😂👏👍
I joined that same club........three times......before I graduated h.s..
Any song by Steely Dan is amazing❤
One of the greatest bands of all time...no joke!
Aja-one of the great albums all time-of any musical genre.
agreed...a masterpiece!!!
I know Aja gets a lot of love, but I'm partial to Royal Scam. My personal favorite.
Madvillainy is right there beside!
That's facts about Aja album! One of the best cross-over jazz-pop albums freggin' ever!!!
Totalmente de acuerdo
OH GOD LIZZIE!! I'm afraid there will be ALOT! of Steely Dan in your playlist. This is the caviar of 70s music. Rock/Jazz fusion at its finest. Enjoy the Steely Dan roller coaster, its going to be a heck of a ride I can promise you that. HMMmm... ... next song I would suggest "FM" or " Black Cow".
45 years old! That album. That song.Nothing old about it.
Have always loved Steely Dan! Such a unique sound, jazzy, bluesy. Such magnificent musicians! You were wonderful Liz!!
Thank you so much 💗
De La Soul jacked the chorus from "Peg" for their track "Eye Know." Steely Dan were waaaay ahead of their time.
I like your word jacked ..im gonna use it 👍 jolly good show
The legendary Chuck Rainey on bass, can't go wrong with him laying down the groove
Slapping too, no doubt!
Some more Steely Dan to look at; "Rikki don't lose that number", "FM", "Reelin' in the years", "Kid Charlemagne", "Black Cow", "Cousin Dupree" and "I got the news". Not a bad one in the bunch.
Thank you 🥰
Especially the first 4 songs that Randall mentioned, please!
Lol cousin dupree is the rhythm guitarist master cornell dupree.
“Babylon Sisters” live ! ! !
That is Michael MacDonald backing vocals. He is the bomb.
Production value and musicianship are among the best ever recorded with all Steely Dan.
Michael McDonald sang backup vocals on this one.
Try "Black Cow" for a whole different vibe.
Have a great day.
Wow I didn’t even realize 😭 thank you!
@@lizziethegangsterhippie9291 You're welcome.
Michael was everywhere, even while he was with the Doobie Brothers.
Michael mcdonald maken every song better
Literally every Steely Dan song is amazing. One of the only bands that never wrote a bad song. You'll love them all.
Steely Dan is my favorite band and Peg is my favorite song; thanks for reacting. If you decide to jump into this rabbit hole be prepared for some good times!
Thank you! I’m looking forward to it! 💗💗💗
Steely Dan was one of the greatest jazz rock bands out there. Them and bands like Chicago, Toto, Santana (latin jazz rock), War (same as Santana), Donald Fagen, etc were big back in the '70s/'80s. Jazz rock.
Steely Dan has that jazzy/ rock sound I so so dig, glad you like it Liz.,
"Hey Nineteen" is a groove. Keep up the excellent tunes you got it going.
Steely Dan is its own genre. No one else quite as cool from track to track. Top level players each adding a dash of what they do best but not overpowering the groove stew. It's always jusssst right.
Dirty Work, Everyone's gone to the Movies, Pretzel Logic, Here at the Western World, Dr. Wu... damn there's a lot of good stuff with these fellas
Lizzie, if you're just starting out on the great Steely Dan discovery I almost envy you. They're the greatest rock/jazz band who ever played music. Try their 'Greatest Hits' album. Trust me on that.
Yeah, what Jeff said!
Boz Scaggs was pretty damn good as well.
Thank you so much 🥰
OK, Lizzie, let’s see what you got. This is one of my fave SDan songs, and the ultimate pop song IMHO. I dropped this before hitting play, I’ll react to your reaction afterwards:
“There’s a lot going on”. Welcome to Steely Dan. Listen a hundred times you will hear something new.
I hear this song everyday at work, lol I love it. Never get tired of it. Classic song, imo
Hey Liz, missed you. Steely Dan is such a vibe...!
Rikki Don't Lose That Number is a big hit for Steely Dan!
Yes
This band has been referred to as “your favorite band’s favorite band!” It’s a rabbit hole well worth jumping down! I’m not sure they ever recorded a bad song, some just weren’t as good as some of their other ones. Top tier music, from writing to production to performance.

My favorite Steely Dan song…Today LOL! Their whole catalog must be listened to
Great driving song especially along curvy roads. Good choice.

Jay Graydon’s guitar solo is a thing of eternal beauty
Fell in love with this song when I first heard it. So jazzy and on point!!
McDonald was hitting some insane multi-layer chords... I recall him saying that it was tremendously difficult. The man is amazing... and a great addition to the Dan crew.
"Peg" is from the "Aja," one of the all-time great albums. You owe it to yourself to check out the entire album. You won't be disappointed.
Love the fact that you are back!!!! Missed you
I love how you get into the song!
Ah, man, listening to great seventies music (1977) and wearing a top with those seventies Stephen Burrows-style lettuce-edge sleeves and collar. It's even in a nice seventies earthtone. You got the vibe down.
I agree, kid Charlemagne is bomb
You'll love "My Old School" from Countdown to Ecstasy, Steely Dan's second album...
Haha. You definitely know what cool music is. This was / still is great instrumentals with a jazzy/slick vibe. It was popular Lizzie back in the day.
What an interesting tune. Thanks for sharing with us
Even if you didn't know exactly how to put it into words at the end, it was really obvious you were picking up on a bunch of great nuances about this song. Really enjoyed this. Hope you dive more into Steely Dan, its really hard to go wrong with them.

GREEN EARRINGS IS ANOTHER GREAT GROOVE BY STEELY DAN
We used to consider them as jazz pop. I think that's quite fitting for them.
They came at time when jazz fusion was on fire.. check out the band Stuff they were awesome!

Donald fagen's voices just beautiful❤
Donald Fagen has one of the best voices. Check out the song "I.G.Y" after he left Steely Dan. Such an amazing song ❤️
Do It Again is also an ancient 70s CLASSIC. Also try Aja and Josie, from the Aja album.
Also, Reeling In The Years from Can't Buy A Thrill, same as Do It Again.

"Josie" Funky bass!..Talk about a groove!
