  • Hello and welcome back to American Sporting Classics! Today we're going to discuss miniatures. Many carvers made miniatures over the course of their careers, typically later in their life. Miniatures are easier to handle than the full size blocks of wood. Some carvers made miniature carvings exclusively. Another reason I like miniatures is you can sneak them into your home without your spouse or partner knowing about your latest editions!
A number of examples are shown including a couple by Jerry Talton from Stella, NC, a swimming drake pintail by Cameron McIntyre who is one of the top contemporary carvers and painters in the decoy world, a least sandpiper by Steve Weaver from Cape Cod, a pair of shovelers by Laurent Verdin from Louisiana, a couple of minis by Bud Coppedge from Virginia Beach and a couple of flyers by George Wilmer Reinbold & William Reinbold among others.
As far as reference materials, Joe Ellis published one of the leading books on miniatures, titled "Birds in Wood & Paint". While it primarily covers miniature carvers from the New England region, it does include some carvers from other regions as well. Carvers covered in the book include Elmer Crowell, Joe Lincoln, George Boyd, A. J. Dando, A. J. King, Jess Blackstone and Wendell Gilley to name a few.
