  • I wanted to do a little feature on the miniature carving category. This is not a "how to" but I wanted to show examples of miniature carvings that might inspire some carvers out there to try their hand at a miniature. They are by no means EASY...but a lot of fun!

What a great idea to share your collection of minis and past carving you created. I personally carved at least about 500 miniature birds in my carving years. Great work by the way .Such a pleasure and even some inspiration to carve some of the flying miniature ducks. Thanks.

    Tom,
I really liked your gull and Scoters, they were very nice. The Redheads over the waves were great as well. All your work were so nice!

I've always loved doing miniatures. There is not much help for carvers who want to do them. Thanks for making your thoughts and encouragements available. Just attended a local show this past weekend. My miniatures got a whole lot more attention form the public than the full size carvings.

You are welcome Norm. May try a “how to” the next time I try a miniature piece. Thanks for your note.

Amazing miniatures the flying red heads are awsome and the details and sizing look so spot-on. If you don't mind me asking how do you get the sizing for these please? .I'm not a bird Carver but I'd love to try something with birds that small. I'm subscribing to your channel 😊

Thanks for subscribing Steve. I normally use photos to create my miniature patterns. On the Redheads I saw a photo with a small group flying low over the water like this and that became the inspiration. The nice thing about miniatures is you can make a nice miniature pattern with an iPad or computer with tracing paper, particularly for side profiles. You have to use some artistry to create top down profiles since they are rare. I also look for wings in an up or down position to try to establish correct proportions. it can be tricky since some areas of the wing may be closer or farther away in photos and you need to adjust accordingly. Hope that helps!
