“How Airbnb fails” Elizibeth Hirschhorn Airbnb serial squatter just moved out.

  • Airbnb should share in the responsibility for their temporary tenants that become squatters. The Brentwood squatter was there for almost two years asking for $100,000 and Airbnb should have assisted in the removal process and expenses since they are responsible for screening and placement. Serial squatter Elizibeth is out now but I’m hoping for changes to help prevent new squatters from using Airbnb and companies alike to gain access. Sorry for the selfies I wanted to show I was actually there.

I saw this in the news. Yes, it was through air bnb, however when the air bnb contract expired the 'tenant' at that time spoke with the homeowner if she could stay temporarily and the owner agreed without a contract through air bnb or a lease agreement. She definitely took advantage of the owner's kindness. Glad to see she's finally out.

We have allowed wild west 2 because of the internet and it is changing the core of our society not.for the better
Before people jump on me for being a pearl clutcher, consider that we do need regulation. Period. However we also should consider whether it is really progress when you...
Carvana..buying a car from a vending machine when so many can not get their titles or have recourse.
Amazon...buy from unknown sellers with products that have no safety regs, the company will not unionize, many retailers and brick and mortars, and mom n pop shops have literally closed or are being crushed.
Air bnb...aside from squatters it has affected the housing market, prices, and greatly decreased availability of houses.
Facebook, instagram, youtube, snapshot, etc etc etc... affect people and children in so many ways, we are just allowing this to continue instead of insisting the guards are their before release. Good idea? Maybe not. 😮

Like what happens if someone booked it and there's a swatter there does air b&b pay for a hotel then, what if all the hotels are all booked already too like what would they do in this case. Yeah no thanks I'll just book ahead of time at a hotel at least there if some like that happened (double booked room) and if they can't find you a room somewhere else they can at least let you stay in the lobby or set up a cot or 2 in a conference room.

We called Air BnB and they said it is up to the owner what they want to do about it, not their problem. I cannot describe how bad it was. Guaranteed that if Air BnB has to start having insurance because communities make laws about them being responsible, those costs will be passed on to the owner who then will pass them on to the renters. And then everyone will complain about the laws that were created and how it's a bureaucracy.

Document the condition of the place with photos or video. Unfortunately there are a lot of scammers who stay for the full reservation and then after the fact try to claim a refund, using fake photos of bugs. So if the place was genuinely dirty, the most important thing to do is notify the host of the condition as soon as you check-in. Ask them to fix whatever cleanliness problem there is, and if they don’t follow through, leave and request a refund.

They said that their cleaners were there cleaning -- we were out front and no one was there. They hadn't even turned on AC -- and it was so late. It was such a terrible experience. We figured out later that it was a company that owns a bunch of rentals and acted like it was an individual. WORST experience. American Express wouldn't do anything for us either. I wonder if the homeowners could sue Airbnb, and based on the contract that they have with Airbnb be able to collect some of the expenses they had to pay out as a result of this case.
I think the problem here isn’t so much the issue with who’s responsible the issue is in California. I don’t know exactly how many weeks it is but it’s either like two or three weeks establishes tenancy. So in order for people who are renting Airbnb’s in California to avoid this problem happening they have to make sure that they get that person out as soon as they overstay their welcome. If there’s supposed to be out on the first and they aren’t rebooking the owners need to call the police, or go to a lawyer and file a motion to get them out before they establish legal tenancy. In the interim between when they were supposed to be out by Airbnb, and when they establish tenancy at the homeowners residence they have no legal right or protection to be in that property. And especially in the cases of these really fancy property rentals, I would say that legally by any means possible, including filing a restraining order if the circumstances warrant, it should be done to get the person out before they have tenancy. It’s going to much harder to remove them after that 2 or 3 weeks.
You can’t leave any leeway, or make any exceptions, because three weeks barely gives you enough legal time to get them out before they would establish tenancy.

When we viewed this place we had a list of things we wanted; reasonably new roof, NO basements, 2 bedrooms & NO stucco. First question we asked was if owner intended on selling - he could have lied. Our previous landlord was a jerk & we left after 6 months of his daily visits (ppl before us had a grow-op!) He neglected to get electric, gas & structured check prior to renting - city requirement and power had been cut off, was still off when we moved in!!!!
At any rate, rarely see my current landlord and phone when something needed. We got extremely lucky and only had 3 regulated rent increases in the 23 years.
That's the way it SHOULD be, not people in & out on an ongoing basis. No idea who's living beside you except when you hear old suitcases out and new ones in and the slamming of taxi doors - no one ever thinks about disturbing the neighbourhood & I can tell you it's ridiculous because neighbours have NO power! Greedy, greedy!

This original comment has got to be a joke.
