In Central Florida I plant the bulbs in August after I purchase them from the Caladium Festival. They are popping up in a week-10 days. They last until mid-November. I don't dig up most of them. They return in April and May and last again until mid-Nov. Did I mention that they multiply? It's a win-win. They do draw Whitefly, but nothing major.
I love Caladiums. My very favorite combo is "Frog In A Blender" mixed with Florida Elise or with Flamingo Caladiums. They do well here in N. Texas, which surprises me in this heat, but they grow like weeds for me. Being from New York, gardening in Texas is a whole other story. Over the years of trial and error, I have a handful that do well here, but it took a long time to figure out what works, and what doesn't. Caladiums never fail , nor do Purslane. Purslane I stand all around the pool deck in large saucer planters and they are just a total burst of color. I no longer grow plants that take constant care, because some plants here, if you miss one day of water , they're gone. Too much time spent . Like they told me in a nursery when I first moved here, stick with native plants otherwise you're just wasting time and money. It's so true.
Do they come back every year or they died in winter? I just moved to North Texas and I want to plant these on the ground but I don't know if they can survive winter 🙃
Beautiful plants for my coffee with Laura this morning!! I love these Caladiums and really want to try them in the classroom with the children as I think they would love them. I am so glad that you get to try out new plants and we get to see what is coming up even if we can't get to a garden show!!!!
Jessica Nazario-the only thing I have against them is if they get chilled, they go dormant and it takes so long to get them growing again. Wish they would breed that tendency out of them.
i am mrs. adelfa mainar from Julmar,Cmpd, Carinugan, Balulang, Cag.de Oro City Mindanao Phillipines im crazy raising caladium and at the same time to have a collection. can i bought all the colors that yuo have now its my stress reliever
I love the Caladium , “Miss Muffet.” I mixed caladiums with asparagus ferns, bird nest fern, a begonia, and that pink polka dot plant. It came out great!
I'm outside of Atlanta and caladiums are grown all over the place! I think gardeners in GA and FL like them so much because of the many different varieties and because they take heat and humidity like a champ. It's been my experience that some of the sun-tolerant caladiums planted in the landscape perform better with a bit of slow release fertilizer like Bulb-Tone--mine seem to grow taller and have bigger leaves. But, yes, if you keep them well watered they grow like crazy!
I live in south Florida. Caladiums are only a few of plants we can grow in the summer heat and rains. I have some (mainly reds or dark colors) in full sun and they are great. I love them easy to care and brighten and stand out were ever u put them with there amazing leaves
Not really. They start fading when leaves are going to die. Yes I fertilize them weekly when I fertilize my orchids with orchid fertilizer. Like I mentioned mine are either in full sun or partial depending on color and part of garden but none in complete shade
First of all, what a treat to see Benjamin. ....such an adorable little boy😍💞 Beautiful! I'm always looking forward to seeing the videos from you guys! Hugs! Have fun at the show! I hope you guys made it! 💜🌷🌱💜
This is my first year in having caladiums and I just love them! I bought bulbs & a pot of them. They’re fast growing in bulb form & flowered soon after. 👍🏼👍🏼
I love how also the stems vary. I planted about 30 bulbs this spring and I planted them under shaded tree but that are gets extremely hot with the sunset. I would probably plant them on the back side of the house next year if I do it again but I absolutely love them the colors are amazingly beautiful. I look forward to these!
I'm in 9a in Florida and caladiums winter over fine here. The leaves die back in the winter, but they come back in the spring. They're never rated for 9a, but that's just how they grow here.
These are awesome! We did a video on how to plant them from bulb. We have a couple different varieties from Proven Winners that we are doing an update on soon as well. We are definitely trying some indoors. Glad you showed some of the varieties we don’t have. Great video. 💚💚💚💚💚💚
Wow they are really pretty plants they colour in them is beautiful.your right the green and white and red does look like Christmas.they will be nice plants to have around then.and the dark red one looks like a great big heart.thank.you Laura for other great video.
Laura and Aaron, I am curious to know if the family that owned your home previously has had an opportunity to see all the work you've done to it? I know you said you grew up and spent Christmas's in that home so my guess is you're probably close to them.... I think it would be awesome if you did a video that included you giving them a tour of your garden to see their reaction!! 😊😊😊
Hi Laura, Aaron and Benjamin! Those caladiums are beautiful! I looked at all of the varieties on the PW website, all are beautiful, too! I want to try some next year after seeing them on Tropical Plant Party's channel.I like the Superbells Tabletop, too. It will be fun to have smaller versions for smaller pots. Thank you for sharing!
I love those Superbells Laura, They are beautiful. Ive never grown Caladiums but I think I may have to give them a go for the new sunroom I am building. Tony
Caladiums are so beautiful, I just don't understand why I can't find any of them in our nurseries, they'd love our climate... oh well, maybe one day. I've also binge watching some of your older videos and oh my, Benjamin has grown so much!!!! May you all always be healthy and happy!! 😊
Caladiums is one of the old school garden plants here in Indonesia. it is so common to find one in your grandma's house. and watching your videos I have just realize that they are beautiful.
Beautiful! I’m in zone 9a but it’s very dry here at a 3000 foot level, Southern California chaperral region. I’ve seen these at my local garden centers, but between the dryness and then there’s the squirrels and rabbits, I wonder how long they’ll last. But you’ve made me think that I should try them on a north-facing wall planter! Thanks for sharing 🌼
I love planting caladiums in my landscape. Zone 8B. When the wind hits them, it looks like a bunch of dancing faces. My favorite is Aaron (white) and they almost glow in the dark.
I came across a Caladium that I really liked a few years ago (Miss Moffet) and have gotten bulbs the last few years and start them early. I've stored them over winter and the started them again in the early spring indoors. Since then the Caladiums have grown on me (ha, ha). These varieties are all beautiful. I'll have to watch for them next spring. And I'd love to have one or two indoors over winter. The little superbells will be cute, too. I like a little pot, once in awhile and I agree.... Great in a Fairy Garden!
I would find hearing issues that are affecting other areas. For example Emerald Ash Borer or Japanese Beetles. There is such a broad group of people watching that could learn. You never hear about it until it’s to late. I love all your tips and tricks. But once once you loose 3 huge ash trees and have all your leaves eaten off your rose bushes, it’s devastating. They both are moving across the country. One tip about the beetles chickens do love to eat them! Free protein and the traps are easy to clean out. Thank you for all you do! You are delightful to listen to! I have saved and gone back several times to remember what you have said.
Love all the information on Caladiums and the new varieties coming out. I have a lot of shade in my garden and these will go perfect along with my coleus in my containers. Great video!!!
Definitely would love to try the caladium varieties that can handle more sun and I absolutely love the table top variety superbells. They would be perfect for my patio table and plant stand. Thanks for sharing 😊
@@auyannaplants Yeah, that made me think: since when is "white" a "Christmas color?" lol. I thought Christmas had two colors: red and green. Are y'all confusing Christmas with Italy? Ha ha ha ha. (Edited because I'm babbling today.)
Gorgeous Caladiums, I would like to try a few of those in my house because the colors are so unique and stunning, I have a couple humidifiers going all the time, maybe I could keep two or more of these happy. Thanks so much Laura for sharing this video, it's so neat that you show us what's new and coming out the following year, and you get to try them out and show us. See you soon, bye for now.
LOVING the Caladiums!!! Unfortunately my first ever Caladium plant died a few days after getting one years ago. Now, you've just given me new hope to try growing another one!:D
Love caladiums and will definitely be looking for the new varieties from @provenwinners next year! I have lots of live oak trees and they always bring beautiful color to those shaded areas. Here in zone 8b in south Louisiana, they return from the ground each year, usually starting in late June. Maybe because they are protected under the tree canopy and mulch?? They are one plant that loves our heat and humidity! 💚🌿🌺
I’ve overwintered mine inside for 4 years. Once it cools down and it stops putting on new leaves I just stop watering and put it on a shelf. In the spring it re-sprouts and I start watering again and put it back outside.
I've never grown those. May try them next year over on my shady side of the house. Thanks for this tutorial. It helps alot when your planning your garden. See you in the next one!
I tried growing 2 caladium varieties this spring/summer. I heard how they liked moist soil but... oh boy... I think I overwatered. The babies kept popping up but rotting off. The big leaves got yellow and mushy. I didn't water for 2 weeks, and they look much better. They are on a north facing porch.
Hi, I love watching your videos, you could activate the subtitles in Spanish, since I would like to know what you explain, if I read it, it's easier, thanks
I love Caladiums but struggle with them every year! I plant the tubers (cheaper) and wait patiently (impatiently) which I always have to remember they won't come up until it's full on summer and warm days and nights. They do ok on my porch in full morning sun but I have to turn the pot a lot. They start to get like hostas in the hot hot days and they fry. This year I actually grew a variety like the ones you planted Red white and green and they were in super hot afternoon sun with begonias in a container and they look GREAT! Go figure. I love them. They only come into the stores a week ago. As soon as I see them I add a big pot of them to my garden, and a little pot for the table too. Otherwise I"m too cheap to plant annuals.
