"One night he sang. Macondo woke up in a kind of angelic stupor that was caused by a zither that deserved more than this world and voice that led one to believe that no other person on earth could feel such love. Pietro Crespi saw the lights go on in every window in town expect that of Amaranta. "

Great comment, next time just mic the guitar for better results. Most piezo sounds terrible. Haven't used mine in years and the low notes make it rattle a little it's so annoying. Tip for starting musicians looking to gig: buy the nicer guitar without the electronics and just mic it at shows.

"Amaranta, however, whose hardness of heart frightened her, whose concentrated bitterness made her bitter, suddenly became clear to her in the final analysis as the most tender woman who had ever existed, and she understood with pitying clarity that the unjust tortures to which she had submitted Pietro Crespi had not been dictated by a desire for vengeance, as everyone had thought, nor had the slow martyrdom with which she had frustrated the life of Colonel Gerineldo Marquez been determined..."

...by the gall of her bitterness, as everyone had thought, but that both both actions had been a mortal struggle between a measureless love and invincible cowardice, and that the irrational fear that Amaranta had always had of her own tormented heart had triumphed in the end." ~Gabriel Garcia Marquez, pg. 249.
I just wanted to post this so people would stop saying Amaranta had no heart. She was just flawed and she was probably one of my favorite characters in the story.

    • @jazzytrumpet12
      @jazzytrumpet12 4 года назад +2

I agree we should not ignore her heart and love that was there, but by the time she died she had none left. It slowly dwindled until it was gone, first through rejecting Pietro and then Colonel Marquez and then through abusing her grandson and then refusing even a minute of reconciliation on her deathbed with her sister, Rebeca, who she hated her entire life (p 303).
We are all flawed as well, but Amaranta gave into fear and ran away from love, hiding her heart in her chest which led to abuse and self-hatred that she never overcame.
I think that she is a great character insofar as she embodies the completely wrong reaction to this turmoil of her soul that many including myself, experience.
In the end she let her fear of being vulnerable to people entomb and kill her heart before it stopped beating. She turned to piercing her fingers (298) with needles in order to feel punished for the misery she had welling up inside her heart. (references are not matched to your book).
Sorry for this spewing on a random post 9 years old, but I just had a book group about these chapters and vehemently disagree that she was "just flawed." I think she could have come back from her brokenness but that Amaranta made a concerted effort to avoid any redemption, just like most Buendias in Marquez's grand tragedy.

    Could you love someone enough
After all you've had and you've lost?
    It's a simple question
I'm only asking 'cause I don't want to die alone
    could you love someone completely?
And yes, by someone I mean me
Spoiled sick like milk you let sit too long
    It's a simple question
As I lie awake waiting for you to lay beside me
I can almost hear the sad waltzes of Pietro Crespi
could you love someone who does whatever he wants to do
    Whenever I want to?
    It's a simple question
I'm only asking 'cause I don't want to die alone
