  • Automotive weekly waveform #11 will guide you through the process of scoping smart ignition coils. Smart ignition coil typically have the transistor as well as other electronics built into the coil.
WARNING!!! We are working with voltages up to 40,000 volts. Use caution for your safety and the safety of your scope. NEVER connect scope directly to the secondary ignition cables or the coil output.
For this test we will need a COP wand, a HT extension lead or a coin to get a secondary waveform. If using a coil simply put your scope into a 1 or 2 volt scale and touch your scope lead to a coin placed on top of the ignition coil. Some coils are heavily shielded and will require the coil to be removed and a HT extension lead placed between the coil and the spark plug.
For scoping the logic level signal from the PCM to the coil we just need a standard scope lead. This signal is normally just a square wave between 0-5 volts or 0-12 volts. the IGT signal was 0-4 volts on this 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid.
You cannot scope the Primary voltage but you can scope the primary amperage by placing a low amp clamp around the power feed to the coils.
My toyota also had a feedback signal to the computer known as IGF. This wire is interconnected between all coils and get pulled to ground when each coil wants to let the PCM know that it received the IGT signal and is charging up.

Great video and explanation! Now I can’t wait until my next misfire comes in so I can put these skills to the test! Thanks!!

When fiddling with these i thought I was doing something wrong, my secondary wire patterns were much harder to quantify in the way as old style systems. So it is reassuring to see you encounter the same issues. Thanks for going through this series, it clarified many issues for me.

I use a General Technologies Corp. GTC-505 with great results. I rarely see it in videos. Thank you for sharing.

Your right, I have only seen a few videos on it as well. It looks like a great tool.

Great video, I like the illustration. I missed week 10 but I still intend to do it at some point. This video definitely helps with the explanation of secondary vs primary and the difference between COP's and old school. Thanks again man, appreciate ya taking the time to do this video set. I was gonna ask where you got that extension cord but you linked it, gonna get me one by the end of the week hopefully.

snapon COP -11 works good on capturing waveforms especially on the heavily insulated coils. It has some kind of amplifier built in or something?

    GREAT VIDEO!!!
I actually need to have a signal that indicates when the spark is fired (or actually present) for a special project. I must use the wires already on the COP. I am able to trigger my circuit on the rising or falling edge of IGT or IGF...any suggestions??
I will be ready to try it in a few days.
BTW: Have you ever 'scoped' a logic signal that was actually 12v logic instead of 5v??
    THANKS MUCH!!!

Hi Chad. Can you show us Toyota ignition coil that prevents the vehicle from starting even though we have IGF signal when cranking. I have found that we also have IGT signal but vehicle starts & dies, I have found the ignitions coils put high amperage during cranking & prevents vehicle from starting. I know if we have shorted ignition coil it will make the 5v from igf to go down to zero volts but i have seen shorted coils & still have good IGT & IGF signals. Can you show us some waveforms with no starting situation? Thank yoiu

We have closed the group for now but may reopen the group after the new year and if we are lucky we will have a season 2 of the automotive weekly waveform.

I feel like distributor waveform offer the ease of access required while learning the waveforms. Makes it easier to create your own problems so you can see the effect on the scope
