Lovely romper. Rompers are great for when they are crawling so then will be the time to make the gorgeous tie one. Lovely makes and ideas. I think the leaf fabric would make lovely shorts but with a plain top as you only have 2 m. One idea would be to use some of the leaf fabric to make accents on a top, either a bias trim or pocket edging etc. making them a set. Or the other way round. Just an idea though. 🤗

We have a 1940’s weekend near us in Haworth I was looking for a hair tie pattern perfect 👍

Absolutely love your makes. The Liberty romper is too cute for words! I think the headscarf looks lovely. It is so interesting to hear you say that the Southport would look better with a normal belt. I usually find that, too. And can I just say again that it is really useful to me when you give your honest review of patterns. I have learned a lot from you! Have a lovely family weekend!
PS. I think the leaves fabric would be great for an oversized shirt :)

I made the Southport and felt frumpy in it as well! Being a tall lady like you, you would think it would suit. I also felt that the front bodice is too wide and tends to bulge out.

I'm the same about the Southport! Makes me feel a bit like an overstuffed couch!! My go to in KL was the SOI Ultimate shift (lengthened to the knee)and the Sew House 7 Sauvie! They both make me feel quite elegant! I loved the headscarf, you could also wear it with the tie at the back, would give a lovely 70s vibe? Adore the Layla bits, Liberty is SO gorgeous for baby clothes, so soft!
Edited to add.... TOTALLY influenced and bought the Jenn Hogg hemmer as the ones i have don't have the curved edge!! Genius little tweak!

Enjoy your time with Layla and Brontë! I love the Taylor Romper by Children’s Corner. I love sewing for my grandchildren and both Charlie and I look forward to the times we get to watch the children and give our children a break. The beauty of being a young grandparent is having lots of energy for the littles. I have a Clover hot hemmer and love that it grips the fabric a little. I also use a home made hemmer where I measured out different increments on a Manila file folder which is great for longer lengths and makes hemming so much quicker.

I think your dress looks great. You are right about belting it. That will make all the difference and still be a cool comfortable dress on a hot summer day. Making baby clothes is so much fun. We had a surprise Grandbaby during Covid. My 40 year old daughter had the shock of her life and is having a ball being a Mom with her equally socked hubby. One thing I would say, the patter with buttons and tie at the back are going to be very uncomfortable as babies sleep on their backs for SIDS reasons. The fabrics you chose are very cute. Your coordinated set is really nice. I like coordinated sets because you can wear them as separates too.

Gorgeous makes. As always lovely! I think the Southport looks nice on you but I did know what you meant. I gave up on it. I think it was the thick straps on it. The fabric is fabulous! ❣️ If you have the McCalls 7387, I think you might be able to get the short sleeve version in a knee length out of the gorgeous tropical leaf fabric. Like you i felt the same way about the southport. I tried every which way to like it I ended up, putting some elastic in the waistband tie because it kept falling down as the tie loosen throughout the day, and the top never did fit me right. I ended up sending it to the charity. Too bad I thought I would really like the style. I loved the fabric. I made it in a nice rayon challis. I will not make any more dresses with similar ties in the waist. Love that you’re sewing for your granddaughter it’s so cute to see small things and fun to sew.

I have also been making her a few of the Little Lizard King Raleighs (free pattern) with frilly pants- I purchased that pattern from etsy I think it was called Lapins ruffled baby pants, and my grandaughter loved them and they are so cool with hot weather but could be worn with bodysuit too. Love the fabric of the dress, and perhaps it would look better with a wider belt. When I’m not feeling particularly slim ( quite a lot these days) I reach for one of my Style Arc’s Max Tunic Dresses. Lengthened by 9” and straightened hem, and generally use poppers. Lots of variations with the yoke, and machine embroidery. Put it on and forget about it! Enjoy your evening with Layla.

I love Atlier Scammit patterns so very excited to see a free pattern. I think they excel at top patterns which are useful but have a little twist that elevates them above the basic, as the pleats on the shoulders do on yours. I think that’s the problem with your Southport. It’s very functional as a summer dress but just lacks a certain something. I agree a belt might help and, as you were showing us your coord set, I wondered if it would work better in a more structured fabric such as double gauze.

Thanks for sharing the free top pattern Rachel, I'm going straight to the website after this! All your makes are lovely as always especially the cute romper 😍 I have a 13 month old granddaughter and I think it would be great to make a couple for her holiday. Have you tried styling the headband with the wider part on top and tying it under your hairline at the neck? Maybe it would work better for you or just give you a different look. BTW I really like your hair as you've recently been styling it. I saw the email you shared on IG stories 🤷‍♀I think it's great that you have the kind of hair that can be styled either way - natural waves or straight, they both suit you. xx

Have you tried the Southport in a botanical (flowers or leaves) ? It occurred to me when watching the rest of your video that we're as used to seeing you in a flower print as you are wearing them. 😉 I'm thinking that the print you've used - while really pretty - might give it a whole different feel. Also, a separate tie belt might have a smoother look than a drawstring gathering the fabric up. You always look very comfortable in long or short floral/leafy fabrics 😍 Love the co-ord set!!

I made the shorter version of the Southport dress in a Nani Iro fabric in a uk size 12. Like you I’ve not got on with it because of the drawstring in the casing which seems to cause unnecessary bulk in the midriff area. I might see if I can remove the casing and just use a belt. Your dress fabric is lovely and the colours are great on you but it may work better with a belt on you too.

"I'm sitting for my grandchild this weekend and must make a her a new outfit". That's me to a T. 😅
I agree the tie belt isn't working. A wider black would look better, but might not be as easy. Would elastic in a casing in the back or just at the sides give you the shaping but still be easy to throw on? For me, I would like it to fit a bit closer just at the neckline and might move the top 2 buttons. That might not fit the way you prefer. The fabric is just too lovely to not be worn.

It was so strange listening to you talking about your Southport dress as I was just thinking at the time that you suit anything and everything and that I would look so frumpy in that style of dress, and then you started saying you look frumpy in it! 🤷 isn’t it funny how we see ourselves and how different that is to how others see us?! I thought it looked good and that it would be amazing in the hot weather, so it might be worth wearing it around the house and garden to see if it grows on you 😊 enjoy grandparent duties, they are the best times 😊

The romper is so cute! But I don’t get this age based size system. Kids are very different sizes at any age so how is that supposed to work? And when pattern companies don’t even bother with a measurements chart, then how am I supposed to choose in the first place? Because here in Germany we have a numbered sizing system based on height (which completely ignores circumference, so the opposite to adult women sizes 🙄), so asking my friend what her daughter is currently wearing doesn’t translate at all. Sorry, it’s become a pet peeve. Moving on. I think the mustard leaves could make lovely wide legged trousers of some sort. The print would pair well with solid coloured tops, and I’m always in favour of fabric in chafing prone areas when the weather turns hot. ❤

Not that it matters, but I think the color and pattern of the jumpsuit you are wearing is too dark and doesn't suit. When you held up the fabric with the big leaves and white background with yellow bits that matched your hair it was immediately much more flattering. Even though the leaves were dark the background was light. If I had your fare coloring, would stick with light to medium colors. Just saying :)
