  • “Chinese Landscape Paintings at the Metropolitan Museum” explores China’s thousand-year-old tradition of landscape painting. Asian Art curator Joseph Scheier-Dolberg leads a guided tour through the galleries: Landscapes of Poetry, Landscapes of Magic, Landscapes of Reclusion, and more. The program takes advantage of modern technology to magnify the fascinating details, which otherwise would be missed by general viewers. These landscape treasures reflect the Daoism view of the world, that humans are tiny compared to the majesty of nature, and that only mountains and rivers last for eternity.
Ancient Art Links, a CUNY TV Digital Series, is a miniseries produced by Quan Ou, dedicated to exploring history via stories and profiles of ancient art treasures. The series of short films aims to bridge an information gap between members of the general public and art historians, and to become an entertaining and enlightening way to reflect on the past and the common links that join civilizations and humanity.

How did those paintings end up at the Metropolitan Museum? Did the US (again) loot them ?

Some items were probably obtained via the British Empire during the infamous storming of the Summer Palace in 1860. Most were bought from the Qing court itself at the beginning of the Republican period. Numerous American museums purchased from the Qing court, e.g. famous Northern Song paintings are in the Nelson-Atkins museum in Kansas City, Missouri. It's understood these days that the weakness of the Qing dynasty was often caused by its dependence on fickle, regional warlords.

@@ShaneyElderberry The ones displayed here aren't very high quality tho. Ming dynasty landscape painting are dime a dozen. Song paintings on other hand....!

@@Tyrhonius I'm not sure about what you are responding to. The only paintings I mentioned were northern song items, which reside in Kansas City.

The whole Tao of painting rendered through ink wash renditions is so beautiful, and so immersive.... I sometimes look at the new corporate, closed and often mean China and wonder what happened to the spirit of China!!
Love to Chinese art from 🇮🇳
Not so much love to the political powers of China!!

huge paintings, so much hard and intricate work, but missed a very important trick of 3 dimensional painting art.

3 dimensional paintings were introduced into China by Italian artists, but the Chinese emperors and noble families didn't like the aesthetics of European paintings. The Italian artists had to adopt the local art styles to appeal to the Chinese taste.

Emphasize on originality and first creative strokes and strikes. Not a follower. The exhibition be not intended for grandeur. Which captivate short emotional attention.
The best is in sprit of chuang tse and emerged in oneness with Landscape. Who only master can do this and not those copy intending for grandeur. Oblivion. Or dong chi Chang a middle talent and opinionated fun talk. Off chi Chang and do it yourself in solicitude better
