    First broadcast: 23 Oct 2013.
The ancient art of Chinese painting is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in history.
Kate Bryan, former Hong Kong resident and the Fine Art Society's head of contemporary, travels to China to find out more about this tradition, a journey which coincides with a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition at London's Victoria & Albert Museum, 'Masterpieces of Chinese Painting'. In China, Kate learns about the golden age of Chinese landscape and discovers why ink is still favoured over paint. She also learns how the country's unique aesthetic was heavily influenced by age-old standards of class and politics.

I don't know why they say is not realistic. Those foggy landscapes and twisted trees are pretty common in some areas of China. Some of these paintings are so detailed that if you looked at a photo you wouldn't get any closer to the scenery. I feel like the people talking in this video never travelled beyond cities or looked out of a window.

“Not realistic” means they’re not a direct study from life. Literati paintings are actually quite abstract when compared to the far more detailed court paintings made by professional painters at the time. They’re more idealized landscapes and are not painted from life, and are intentionally blander. But also, the people in the video aren’t talking out of their asses when they describe these paintings - the Chinese wrote extensively about painting (their first art history books date back to the 4th century) and the literati painters were scholars; they wrote about their methods in great detail. We don’t have to rely on modern interpretation of these paintings because the artists explained everything themselves.

My mother still keeps the love letter I wrote to my classmates in primary school. And this love letter I wrote with ink. I hope it can also be saved for 1000 years.

What is so surprising about learning to paint by copying the masters? That was the way European artists were trained right up until WWI. It's called academic training. As in Academy of Art?

I like the colour work more. You can trace the rise of the Patriarchy...man wants to rule and control nature and art. The 'science ' of calligraphy.....the technique set over human feeling and empathy .
