Even though the GR III does not WR I can tell you it can take some hits due to recent experience. I slipped and fell waist deep into a glacier lake recently in Norway, my GR in my hand having the strap not attached to my wrist. So my GR was floating in the lake for a few seconds in ice cold water. After the accident I took out the battery and cleaned of the water a bit. But then also continued shooting a bit. (I know you shouldn't do that..) The photos had a little foggy look to them. Then I turned the camera on and took the battery out while it was on, so the lens would stay open and extended. I put it on a desk for a night with the battery door open as well. Since then, the fog disappeared and it works as before, pictures look like before. Long story short, the GR definitely can take a little rain etc. as it works perfectly now after having been covered in ice cold water for a short amount of time.
Bought myself a new gr iiix today after work. I liked the griii girnst but. Of the 28mm equiv focal format. Finally did it! Still in box. I’ll unbox tomorrow. 😊
@samuel thankful to see you've kept your connection with Ricoh, I hope they recognize how much you help them. I cant think of anyone better to ask them directly about having an LCD ON AF/half-press firmware setting that turns off immediately after preview. this way the LCD is only on during the actual act of shooting/review, keeping stealthy but more crucially saving battery (our darling camera's achilles heel). or at least adding more options to the Auto Sleep Mode (10, 15, 30 sec) would also serve our poor batteries greatly. thank you and please continue this great thing going 🙏🏼
That frame with the girl running up the steps was incredible. The shadows leading to the bird silhouette. The pillars framing the girl and the subtle green arrow guiding my gaze from right to left makes this photo even more provocative from a cinematographic point of view.
Might be the best GR IIIx review not just for now, but of all times. Because time was spent not only to take good example photos, but due to the effort to explain about 40mm FOV. From my not common FOV, 40mm POV it is just too narrow. I like GRD cameras I have, but I constantly reach for 21mm. Layers and framing is still achievable with 21, but you have to like to be close. Which is not always good during COVID.
Hi, Q2/GRiii owner, here! Love both cameras. Often, I carry both with me. For street photography/travel, you can’t beat the GR’s compact size - (the Q2 is bulky in comparison, wearing mine around my neck.) There are many pluses to owning the GRiii or GRiiix over the Leica Q2. Firstly, the sensor. Compared to the digital cameras I own, the GR produces the best colour and black and white files, period. The RAW files, are also incredible, as they are DNG’s. Secondly, USB-C charging. Yes, the GRiii’s battery is limited, compared to the Q2. But the in-body charging makes all the difference. I love that. Wish I could plug in my Q2 to USB-C (like the SL2) but that’s down to waterproofing. My biggest dislike is the charging times for the Q2 battery. You’re out of the game until then. The Ricoh GRiii can do everything, more or less, that the Q2 can do. With advantages as mentioned above. Excited to try the GRiiix - if Ricoh did a full body SL2 style camera, I wouldn’t look back. I trust them. Ricoh is the future of digital photography.
@@courtneysmith731 I also own the GR III as well as the Q2. Love them both. definitely prefer the Q2 but the GR III ends up coming with me more often because of it’s tiny size (and incredible quality images). I will definitely be adding GR IIIx to my bag as soon as it is available :)
Compared to Canon and Panasonic cameras, Ricoh applies very little noise reduction in JPGs. I really like 40mm. I'm loving the GR IIIx. Thanks for the video.
I always used gr, it's last series, from I to III and the one thing that was missing was right focal lenght. I've been using pentax 43mm lens for a while and i love it. Think i am going to sell my gr IIi and get x one.
Sorry Samuel, yes, " It's easier to find/frame a a subject". That is why I sold my x100f even though I loved it. What I want is either an x100 with a 27mm-40mm equiv. lens or, an x100 with a bigger sensor , think Q2 so we can crop the crap out of an image if/when we want to.
Haha you totally got me because the GFX50SII announced like the night before and I thought you got one sent to you from Fuji. I swear thats why...DONT LOOK AT ME! Good work. ;)
I love my GR3. Pleased with a high percentage of images straight out of camera...However your images with the x are super sharp, specially the portraits. Her dark hair and dark jacket look amazing. The detail in hr camera as well. Thanks well done.
I use the 8.1 megapixel GR digital which has a 5.9 mm 2.4 lens. HUGE depth of field. I absolutely love it. For €130 it's a bargain. I use my Soviet Cosmic Symbol 35mm film camera with a 40mm f4 I will get a Gr11 next because I like a built on flash
Ohhhh I really want one of these. I loved my original GR so much for street and sadly it died after a fight with a wave. This new 40mm looks even better than the 28mm.
I picked up both the 28 and 40mm versions of the GRIII. I’ll be the first one to admit that being a Leica addict, I’m having a blast using these tiny cameras. The files look amazing. The handling is amazing. I use it in zone focus and don’t miss a shot. I’m tempted to pick up one of the 35mm film versions of this camera as well.
Holy shit this gonna be my new dream setup. Ricoh gr ii in one pocket , gr iii X in the other :D Great video ! Im really impressed by the quality of these photos.
Yeah probably the same for me. Have the II but didnt see that much point in upgrading for the way I use it but with a different focal length that's a whole different story.
Nice shots of Hamburg. I made a short visit a few years ago when I was part of a group visiting the Montblanc factory. The main reason I haven’t been back is that there are no direct flights from where I am. I think I’ll also get the x to go with the III.

I'm about to get my first Ricoh GR, but this GRiiix made me doubt! Hard to decide. Years ago, in the analog era, use to shoot on 35mm. Thanks Samuel for (another) great video.
The photo of the GR with the turntable freaked me out a little. I have a similar turntable on a similar stereo cabinet. I wondered how you got one of my photos! 😂✌️
I was waiting for Samuel's video after seeing Kai and Lok playing with the GRIIIX. Can't wait to get my hands on it as 40mm is the most ideal, do-it-all focal length!

Great video, I'm a bit confused on why you prefer Tv to Av when Av is critical for zone focusing. Thx Sam great work at helping us understand these cameras better as usual
Hi Elias, sorry for the late reply! I prefer TV with the GR because the depth of field is much broader than full frame and I can get a lot more in focus (even with 2.8) than with a full frame camera. And in Av mode you give up control over speed which is very important for street photography. I compensate aperture by manually setting a higher ISO value to raise the aperture value.
I wanted a gr and I do love the 40mm focal length but I have to choose between this new baby and the gorgeous colour on the street edition. I have a long time to decide still
there's some vignetting at f2.8 on lok cheung's hands on video, did u encounter it as well? i'm personally owning the xe4 with the new 27mm (42mm equiv) lens, the 40mm look definitely feels great for everyday use.
I've been thinking a lot about this camera, and I'm really curious about the Ricoh GT-2 tele adapter. . . Have you used it? Would you do a video on it?
Hey.. im looking again at a digital (had so many lol) ... my first love is film... in camera editing now has come on, and im interested in this gr3x.... BUT... to get a film look you need to manage certain qualities in order to get the look. Ive read there are certain functions backed into the raw files of this camera... so its imperative you get the shot right as you shoot it. With the fuji's you have Highlight and Shadow Tone Controls.... which are key controls in getting a film look. Are these available on the Richos? Ideally i dont want to go back to using lightroom and all the faff anymore... i dont really print large format prints anymore... so i dont see a need... unless I want to go the route of getting plugins for lightroom to get a look if i cant get it done in camera shooting jpgs.
My two favorite digital cameras have been the GR ii and the GXR A12 50mm Macro module (my favorite lens on any format ever). This new GR iiix strikes me as potentially an ideal blend of the two- I do a lot of my shooting in the near-macro range (rarely at the minimum focusing distance of the GXR module). I'd love to see how this new lens performs at its closest focusing distances. With the higher sensor resolution and cropping I imagine it would still meet my near-macro shooting needs as well as the GXR macro module, which I have now loved to death and need to replace!
@@DaTrip2warez I'm not sure I understand what you mean? They certainly are all well engineered, but share many things in common. The GR ii more or less shares its form factor with the iii x, while the GXR A12 is closer to its focal length. All of them share Ricoh's UI sensibilities and optical design/coating principles. If the iii x performs well at minimum focus distance, it will combine the aspects I most enjoy about each of the two preceding cameras.
6:12 top notch photo. The strange lighting and perspective effects make it look super flat and generally surreal. Some vibes of Harry Gruyaert's best work (IMO)
The images look so sharp and clean from GRIII x! I think Ricoh got a winner lens here. The only concern I have are their build quality and lousy app. My GRIII front blue ring dropped off, the back button was not aligned properly. The wifi connection was iffy. And the app was available to download 1year after I got the camera. Even then it was full of bugs and not as good as a third party app written by a Korean hobbyist. Please Ricoh announce a new 30-40% larger capacity battery in the same shape and form, just like Canon Nikon Fuji did.
i am in for this one 2. I have the GRIII. For the other focal lenghts greater than 28mm i use the Panasonic GX9 for the moment. I only hope (wish) for the next GR Ricoh will do something about the lcd screen (pretty shitty in bright sunlight) and maybe also batterylife without making the camera grow in seize or weight 2 much
It's intriguing, but I can't live without a viewfinder in daylight and preferably an EVF. If Ricoh would lengthen the body (if necessary) and add a pop-up EVF like on the Sony RX1R II, I couldn't resist buying it. While they're at it, Ricoh should upgrade to the 26MP BSI sensor used by Fuji, because why not? A camera like this would keep the street-shooters happy (still pocketable), while also being a fantastic travel camera (with the EVF deployed) and I think Ricoh would steal market share from the X100V. I think they might be able to get $1500 for it. If they also wanted to add some weather sealing, I wouldn't complain.
I have been hearing about issues with the back wheel on the GRiii which is a bummer given I like that it has IBIS. Is the GRiiix better in build quality? After hearing all this stuff I don't see myself buying it at all given the risks of dumping money into something built to break. Am I better off buying a GRii?
wow, the gr3x really does have good sharpness! still Hodling for a gr4 for the 28mm focal length, as I already have a x100v, a 40mm would be too close to warrant another camera.
The GR IV will be interesting! Can't wait to find out what ricoh has in store. And yes, having both a X100 and a GR does only make sense when the focal length is different enough.
damn Sam. You've sold me on it. Thanks for the samples. I sold my Sony A7iii a few days ago. It was gathering dust. I can still use my wife's A7ii if necessary, but my GRiii is used 70% of the time, followed by an RX1r. I guess the cash from the A7iii will be paying for a iiix soon :-)
Hi Samuel, great video as always! You are the reason that I got one of the first and best photo albums that I own, "Friction/Tokyo Street by the amazing Tatsuo Suzuki"... I have one probably irrelevant question, but please allow me so... Could you tell me where you got and how much did it cost, the beautiful grey jacket that you wear in the beginning of this video? Thank you very much for your time and keep going stong and creative!
Also enjoying 40mm: GFX50R / 50mm,3.5 and for 28 mm the Q2. My very first camera in 1981 was a AGFA Optima 40 mm / 2.8; though quite familiar to the focal length. Maybe, the GR IIIx will come next...
Even though the GR III does not WR I can tell you it can take some hits due to recent experience. @@pidgeo202 Thanks man! :)
Good focal length for social-distancing period.
Yes :)
Pls review fuji new lens as well.❤️
Great shots! Have you ever edited Ricoh RAW files in Capture One?
Hi Samuel, great video as always!
You are the reason that I got one of the first and best photo albums that I own, "Friction/Tokyo Street by the amazing Tatsuo Suzuki"...
I have one probably irrelevant question, but please allow me so... Could you tell me where you got and how much did it cost, the beautiful grey jacket that you wear in the beginning of this video? Thank you very much for your time and keep going stong and creative!
So is the GRIV going to come out soonish or did the IIIx bump it?
Also enjoying 40mm: GFX50R / 50mm,3.5 and for 28 mm the Q2. My very first camera in 1981 was a AGFA Optima 40 mm / 2.8; though quite familiar to the focal length. Maybe, the GR IIIx will come next...
