  • iPad pro 2021 for Nomad Sculpting - Apple give us RAM Back
    A few months ago I did a video all about how the new iPad 2021 wasn’t a good upgrade for iPad 2020 owners.
    If you had 6GB RAM in the older one and then bought the 16GB iPad 2020 you would expect to see huge performance increases. And we did! In read and write speeds, rendering etc.
    But prior to the recent release of iOS 15, an app could only use 5GB of the system RAM max. That meant we would have been wasting more than half of the available RAM.
    This video gives me a chance to talk about what things are like today with iOS15, Nomad 1.61 and the amazing iPad Pro 2021. The clue was in the ‘amazing’ bit! It’s a corker!
    But there are still issues.
    Watch the video to find out.

    So the creature I’m using here was done to test Nomad 1.61 with iOS 15 and the new ram possibilities. But, it was also for a tutorial that will appear in next months 3DWorld magazine. I’ve written for the magazine for almost 20 years now and I honestly never thought I’d be doing a high end 3D tutorial on a mobile device. How the world has moved on!
    Has anyone got an M1 ipad and wants to share their sculpting experiences? I’m dying to hear what other people think.

      I use Zbrush for School but I honestly prefer Nomad a lot of the time I can work much faster and more intuitively. Once I get better I'll probably start in Nomad then export to zbrush. But for now I'm just able to enjoy learning shape luangage without frustrating controls or interface.

      I love it so far. I’ve been using Blender for a couple years and I’m using Nomad to clean up my custom characters. It’s a slight learning curve with the Nomad software, but understanding the terminology makes it easy to understand the tool system. I would love to see all the tech reviewers address all the nonsensical complaining they did about the M1, but it’s never going to happen. The M1 is changing multiple industries and it’s crickets from the ‘review community.’ Nothing but 6 month old videos of all of them crying about non-utilization of power. Well, Procreate is importing full on 3d scenes for painting, and Nomad and Forger are rendering in 4K. On a tablet. Seems like the reviewers shouldn’t be reviewing products that they don’t know how to use.

    I just got the iPad 12.9 6th gen 256gb with Cellular
    It has the M2 chip, 8gb of Ram, 8core CPU, and 10core GPU.
    I can run over 40+ million verts with lighting and it is still running smoothly.
    It blows my mind that it has that much power and it's only a 256gb model.

    Between the 8GB and 16GB models, do you feel like the extra memory on the 16GB would make a big difference or that it's still kinda negligible even after the update?

    • @SouthernGFX
      @SouthernGFX  2 года назад +5

      Not worth it at all for Nomad. I have the 16 2021 and I can get 35 million poly sculpt but only use 6 gig of the available 12 ( even though it has 16GB the OS won’t allow over 12). If I do go over 35mill it crashes without ever using more than 6. I haven’t stress tested an 8GB for long but without using Geekbench I can’t tell the difference. Can’t really say about other apps though.

      He’s not a developer that’s for sure, or he just acting (most YTrs are). Anyway it’s on Nomad not Apple, so get the 16Gb because XR will be available to consumer’s very soon and everyone will be in a panic mode to learn how to develop for XR, the tools, and definitely the hardware, and all I can tell you now is 16Gb for a XR developer is maybe the minimum probably more like 32, but definitely 40-320Gb of Ram will be the new normal (not for consumer’s this year 22 though) mobile + XR glasses this year, starting with a Verizon 5G U+ package lol or here in US Samsung flagship paired with n-real light glasses 👓. Should be any day now, maybe Dec. 3rd?

      @@cedricvillani8502 This video is about Nomad Sculpt. The question was relating to Nomad Sculpt. My reply is about Nomad Sculpt. I am not a developer nor trying to be one. Thank you for you ‘non Nomad Sculpt’ information as it’s very informative.

      @@SouthernGFX Well perhaps you should talk about nomad sculpt and not Apple ram lol

    • @SouthernGFX
      @SouthernGFX  2 года назад +13

      @@cedricvillani8502 I stand by my comments in the video and here in the comments and it was an apple issue which has now been resolved when they released iOS15.
      Until iOS15 developers could only give 5GB of RAM to an individual program. Therefore having a 16GB iPad meant that Nomad was only able to see and use 5GB. When iOS15 went into beta we saw that they allowed developers to give apps access upto 12GB of the available RAM.
      This really matters for digital sculptors because apps like Nomad and Forger rely heavily on the RAM and crash once they hit the polygon count ceiling. The point I am making in these comments is VERY relevant to people like Nayelianne because there are no material benefits to having 16GB of RAM if it isn't being used. For example, if you are sculpting and make a model over 35 millions polygons the program can often crash. If you watch your RAM usage you would see that it will only be using 6GB of the 'allowed' 12 from the total of 16GB in the device.
      If you are on a budget and you wish to primarily use an iPad as a professional sculpting device then there is no benefit to having the extra RAM.
      That's my point and it is fact based. Beyond the use of Nomad Sculpt and for XR I agree with you on most points. I personally like the 16GB model for a wide range of other apps that do use more of the RAM such as Lumafusion.
      I love debating topics of this nature.

I so badly wanna start a new project but I’m not done with the current one I’m working on but it says when I press “new” it says “create new scene? You will lose unsaved changes”. I’ve saved it to everything possible but how do I know it’s saved to the apps portfolio so I can come to it? I think you will get the same performance as this one. I can’t use over 6gb in nomad. We should do some tests on the same model and get the whole community positing the results.

      @@SouthernGFX yeah I noticed that while watching the vid. I was a bit early with my comment. That said, I’m more than happy with the iPad I have. And I know that a whole lot of users would love to have an iPad like I have. I don’t want to sound like a spoiled person although I feel privileged. Let’s hope Nomad will get any uv-tools any time soon.🤜👍

      @@bullshark1152 ha spoiled? You do realize that often times its the hardware that’s the cheap part! A lot of the software I use has either a $7K plus license attached or is a SaaS that runs $5-15K per/mo
