Hey guys, in this video, I talk about one of the most popular credit card setups, the Chase Trifecta. This credit card setup is most commonly composed of the Chase Freedom Unlimited, Chase Freedom Flex, and Chase Sapphire Preferred cards. Not only do I give a review of all three of these cards in this video, but I also discuss some alternative Chase Trifecta setups you can build depending on your goals, what makes these cards so powerful in combination with one another, as well as why this setup might be overrated. If you’re looking to build out your credit card setup and are weighing your options, the Chase Trifecta is definitely one to consider in my opinion, but that is really only the case if you have a complete understanding of what this setup provides and ensure that it fits your specific lifestyle. If you’ve been wondering “Is the Chase Trifecta worth it?” or “Is the Chase Trifecta better than the Amex Trifecta, Citi Trifecta, and/or the Capital One Duo?” you’ve come to the right place.

What are your opinions on the Chase Trifecta? 👇🏼
Been usig the CFU for awhile now; the trifecta is a mainstream setup though very applicable to everyday use. I give it a 7.5/10 in my book
One of my favorite videos of yours, and couldn't be more well timed for me as I am considering the CSP!
Great video Spencer! I think your last point at the end is super important! Forming your own decisions on credit card is crucial because not all set ups will benefit everyone’s lifestyle. I remember when I first watched your channel last time, I thought I had to get Chase like asap in my set up. But I always reevaluate my setup and at the moment I don’t see the benefits fitting in my setup.
Chase points are definitely some of the most valuable out there. I do enjoy my Amex trifecta I'm running mainly because of having the Schwab Platinum. Great vid as always Spencer 💥
I feel it’s only good if you only want to stick with Chase. But if you incorporate Amex and Capital One, it feels lacking.
That's a good judgement call on this one! As I mentioned, you kinda graduate away from spending on their cards, but then again, Chase points are so valuable that I always find myself needing more and using their cards because of that.
Thank you for the content. Great volume and editing. Much appreciated❤
No problem at all! Thank you so much for your support!
Brother, you really gave an in-depth review on Chase's trifecta. I really enjoy how you give your honest belief on a card (or set up) but still leave room for it not being for others. This is what sets you apart from other content creators.
Dude thanks so much for saying that man!! I'm really glad that's how the videos come off. I never want to make a blanket recommendation for every single person and make it seem as if I know everything, because in reality, I don't! I just want to educate people to the point to where they can make their own decisions on cards based on their needs and preferences. Thanks again for the kind words!
Can’t wait to complete my own version of the Chase Trifecta. Great video as always Spencer!
Thank you so much for watching man!
As I’m still opening cards for SUBs without yet a core card set up for my spend, this video definitely helps in drafting a plan for what those core cards would like with a Chase only set up! Definitely want to add the CFF, CSP (or CSR), Ritz, and CIC to my CFU and Prime Visa!
Love your content.

Excellent! Had to watch it twice hahaha. Great content as always Spencer!
Glad you enjoyed it man! Thanks so much for the support!!
Great video Spencer! I can’t wait to start my chase card journey. Should be getting started at the end of this month. Great meeting you and everyone yesterday in Vegas. I am here till Wednesday 😈😂. I love this town
Thank you so much Ed!! It was so great getting to meet you in person. I look forward to seeing you again at the next meetup! Enjoy you're last day in Vegas man!!
I personally love my most common chase trifecta and still use my CFU as my catch all and CFF as my rotating Card, with the CSP giving me the additional travel upside. But yeah I completely agree with you on the CFU in that I could get 2x with something else but I simply value Chase points so highly the 1.5x back is worth it to me. I’m really pumped to add some of the Chase Ink Cards to my setup when I come out of Chase Jail later in the year as well. Love the flexibility with Chase Points and how they can be a good hybrid option for people who are open to Cash Back & Travel Redemptions, so love your points there. Great video as always Spencer!
Thank you so much for watching as always Matt! I definitely agree that Chase cards in general can be really powerful, mainly because of the Chase point ecosystem. Could the trifecta use a refresh? 100%! But it's still pretty dang solid for those earlier stages of the credit card journey.
Great overview of Chase's ecosystem! Most of their offerings are definitely part of my long-term plan.
Thanks so much Blake!
Solid content 💪🏻 your editing is fantastic too.
Regarding the problems, I actually think 5/24 can help new people in the credit card game. Keeps them focused makes the whole industry less daunting, with a lot of options to choose from starting out. I wish it didn’t exist, but it low key may actually be helpful 🤷♂️
Thank you so much Ed! That means a ton!!
@ 5:10 Ben, he's blooming brilliant. I can't lie, to be fair mate, I found you cause of him. and now recommended videos for me. Cool stuff.
Need to get started on this setup at some point! It’s just hard because there are so many other great cards to get! Chase has such easy redemption options, which is another great draw to their system. Great comprehensive review of the Chase Trifecta Spencer!
Edit: Thanks for the shoutout! PYB was so awesome!
That's the sucky thing about Chase... if you don't start with them early, it's pretty annoying to backtrack for sure. And thanks for sharing that DP with us in our Creator Conversations episode! I really think the PYB feature is something that'll help folks out a ton if they bring back some competitive earning categories. Thanks for watching as always man!
I wasn’t interested in Chase, but since I learned that Southwest is a travel partner and Capital One and Citi aren’t with Southwest, this is probably my new plan. I still won’t be getting any new cards for another like 7 months, so maybe things will change again. Great video as always!
Great video! I think my next card will be the CSP as I'm at 4/24. Plus I've got all the other cards I need in my portfolio other than BILT
Thank you so much! The CSP is a really solid pickup for sure. And I could say the same for the Bilt card!
There is an offer out right now on both freedom cards for 5x on gas and grocery up to $12k for one year. It’s the superior offer.
I just looked at the Chase website and didn’t see that. Where did you see that?
- ya in my region they only have a $150 sub & thats it 👎🏼
I believe this offer is gone now as well. But hopefully they'll bring something like that back!
Great video @spencer.
Thank you so much man!!
Love my Chase Trifecta! I also have the OG Chase Freedom, which was a downgrade from a CSR a couple years ago.
I got a question so I’m think I’m at or over the chase 5/24 rule, I opened 5 credit cards within the past 2 years but the hard pulls are only on my transunion, there’s no inquiry’s in my Experian report, my question is since there’s not hard pulls on my Experian and in my state chase only pulls Experian, would I be able to a chase card with this or would I have to wait till the hard pulls fall off my transunion as well ?
I personally think the Capital one duo + Citi gas card (someone knows the name of it) is the best trifecta rn because the VX fee essentially pays for itself if you take at least one trip a year and the savior one card has 3x back on categories people actually shop for and VX has 2x on everything else. Can’t go wrong. In the future also there’s going to be more lounges so it’s looking up for CapOne whereas Chase is still looking good just a little complacent at the top imo. Amex is good too but that’s for the travelers who actually travel more than 1-2 a year versus the average joe like me who takes at most 1-2 trips a year.
That's fair! As I mentioned, I think a hybrid setup can be really solid too rather than locking yourself down to just 1 lender, but hopefully videos like these can show people which direction to head based on their preferences, especially if they only want to be with one lender.
Just got my first Citi card last month. Kinda curious about using the Citi CC and CFF as a one-two 5% punch.
The set up which will work the best for me is a Hybrid Travel/Cash Back with the Capital One duo and a dedicated Gas card, but still would like to have a foothold in the Chase eco system. The 5/24 rule has me stuck though, as the next card I get will put me at 5/24 until at least Jan 2025. I do have a small window as I have to wait until January for the Savor 1 because I just got the VX in July. I'd like to get the SUB on one of the CSP or the Ink Business Preferred, but doing the spend right now is hard to do. I may end up getting the Freedom Flex or Ink Business Cash, but would 'cash back only' for 2 yrs on Chase. Another option might be better for me... Citi Premiere / Custom Cash + the Cap 1 Duo. That set up covers almost all the bases, except limited Domestic and Hotel transfer partners.
Watching this in Vegas😎
That’s awesome bro! I appreciate you! And it was great meeting you yesterday as well man 🥉
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Likewise!
Chase trifecta with player 2 is what we're doing atm, racking up points together.
I’m just go with the chase duo I don’t need all 3
I love my chase trifecta it’s easy to use and a no brainer setup
So far i only have the chase sapphire preferred. And been debating where to expand next, if keep branching and make the trifecta or go for something about the same level like a venture x or amex gold
I have the chase freedom unlimited and flex.
how often does that 5% gas bonus get offered for the flex and unlimited? It seems like it just ended on the 1st of this month
I have multiple lenders but I’m starting to really enjoy chases points
Like I mentioned in the video, I always find myself needing more Chase points because of the value they provide. Definitely a solid point ecosystem!
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial definitely, it’s funny that you guys were in Vegas this past weekend. I had gotten there at the same time! Wish I knew you guys were doing a meet up!
Dang man! That would have been cool! We'll be doing more in the future though, don't you worry. @@DavidGarciajrtx
I don't see where to get that additional 5% back for gas welcome offer on the chase freedom flex. Does anyone know where to find it?
I just got the unlimited with 5x back on gas and grocery’s for a year on up to 12k spend.
Can you get the Freedom Flex as your first credit card as opposed to the Freedom unlimited? Which card is more likely to get approved as a first credit card?
Darn! Anthony Venture distracted me FIRST!
Hahah it was all a ploy 🤣
Enjoy my Chase Trifecta using my CSR as my travel card.
No banks tri or bifecta is perfect, they all have limitations:
AmEx: too high AF, pts redemption restrictions
Chase: missing key categories & over lapping categories
Citi: no premium travel card & no travel insurance
Cap1: buckets, picky on approvals, so-so customer service, no gas multiplier
BOA: need preferred reward status to be competitive
US Bk: cant combine pts, not sure if they have transfer partners
WF: cant combine pts, no sub on built card & it doesn’t cover mortgage
So in the end just pick your poison, or create your own setup or just do cashback 🤔
The thing is... I like the Capital 1 setup, the Venture X gives a flat 2x on everything, if you're paying a high annual fee, they should give you at least that. Also, the Savor one is 3% back on groceries, you can't get that with this setup.
We will see on that. Doing the x5 bonus groceries on my freedom . I hope next year they bring it back.
That's completely fair! Everyone has their preferences and the Cap1 duo is a solid choice for sure. I personally have both and see use cases for both of them, but that's mainly because I value Chase's partners so much higher than Cap1 in my domestic travels especially.
Last month I product changed my CFU to another CFF so that I could get the SUB again as well as 5x on groceries for a year. After the year is up it'll go in the sock drawer since I'll only be using it for the groceries and I have the Venture X as my catchall. BTW, the Chase rep said that the OG Freedom was no longer available. YMMV on that though...
I was thinking about doing something similar. How long did you have to wait before reapplying for the CFU and did Chase give you any trouble about it?
@@boondoggle4820 Chase gave me no problems. I waited 4 business days to reapply
That's great you were able to grab another bonus! And yeah, the PC to the OG Freedom is definitely a YMMV thing. Sometimes you can call back to back and have a different rep allow you to do it so it's weird.
To get the bonus again, you have to wait at least 24 months from the time you got the first bonus on that same card.
To clarify, after waiting the required 24 months to downgrade I then waited four business days to reapply
The trifecta is great is you’re a domestic US traveler. Hyatt is just too good of a partner. Basically turns the FU into a 3% card with the 2ccp redemptions.
Is the gas offer still valid? I might apply for a second freedom unlimited if so.
Last I checked I didn't see it on their website... however, those limited time offers come and go pretty frequently so hopefully another one comes back by the end of the year.
Is the 5% back on gas up to $6k in the first year gone? I opened a freedom flex card a month ago and do not see that offer.
Chase at times has special welcome offers like he mentioned. Sometimes it comes from using referrals. Other times it comes from finding offers online. I got the freedom flex last month and I got 5x on gas and groceries for an entire year!!
Based on what I can find, it looks like they may already have taken that away. As mentioned above though, these offers come and go pretty quickly, so it's very possible another one comes back soon.
Where does it say you can get a welcome bonus on the freedom cards every 24 months?
Does anyone have a link to that 5% gas back offer?
That offer may already be gone but they do come and go somewhat frequently so hopefully they'll have another come back.
This trifecta doesnt make sense for me bc I already have a discover card for rotating categories, amex gold for dining, and I plan to get the venture X for catch-all. I dont like how all of these chase cards have overlapping categories.
Maybe they weren't made to be a trifecta and just pick one
As I mentioned in the video (and what was mentioned above) you don't necessarily need a trifecta with only one lender. Eventually people start to build out hybrid trifectas based on their specific needs and that's a great way to go about it!
So something I really don't hear anyone talking about that I have found to be a decent use case of the portal. I travel some, usually a couple days at a time once a month for work. My job reimburses me for travel up to a certain point. So this amount for car rental, this amount for a hotel, flight, food etc etc. I've used my chase and or amex cards to book these mini trips, the whole trip and I get a breakdown of how much each trip cost per line item and then when I'm reimbursed, I pay it off effectively getting a free 5x points or more per each trip. The same can be said for mini vacations. Buy on the portal on day here two days there to stock up points for a big redemption. Now I am a hotel guy. Hilton, Hyatt, future Marriot, maybe. But I have status already. Idk. I'm just saying the portals aren't all bad, but it really depends on what you are going for and what points you are valuing the most at that time.
I agree 100%
Especially if you don’t have or care about status. For i like knowing i get a guaranteed 1:25 cpp in the chase portal. To me the price difference is negligible. I like the convenience.
Dude yes! I completely agree. I think people really get worked up by their CPP values, but in reality, there are plenty of good use cases for travel portals. And like you said, if you aren't using points, getting 5x Chase points back on all that travel really aint bad at all. I like where your head is at!!
After 1 yr of csp, whats the value of chase trifecta tho? Freedom has a low Sub, flex has none. So u rlly gotts spend alot to get that 1.5x. Travellin+ hotels cost like 70k points+…?
I probably won’t finish the chase trifecta until maybe 2025. Considering my card road map and that I may apply for a car loan in that year.
Fair enough! Chase is an annoying one to back track on, but even if you won't get value from all the Chase Trifecta, you could at least scoop up 1 or 2 that you really want.
So, assuming I do the spends, I could get a Freedom Unlimited, a Freedom Flex, and a Sapphire Preferred, and get 100,000 points!
Do you need to cancel your current Freedom card before you apply for the bonus again after 24 months?
I’d recommend just product changing it instead to the OG Freedom or to another Freedom card you’re not going for the bonus on. You can cancel if you want, but it’d be better to leave the account open since you aren’t paying an annual fee.
so how to get the bonus every 48 months? @@SpencerJohnsonOfficial
I have the freedom and the sapphire.. Can I add a third card to get the trifecta?
The normal trifecta is made up of the Chase Freedom Unlimited, Chase Freedom Flex, and Chase Sapphire Preferred. You can build out that trifecta or swap in cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or Chase Ink Preferred if you'd rather. Or you don't have to get all 3 at all! It's not mandatory by any means.
So what I have now is good.@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial
Spencer would you know if I got the CSR and my wife got the United Explorer Card would I be able to transfer my points to her United Account?
Not Spencer. But I have the answer for you. That's a no friend. Chase cards are attached to each individual user account that applied for it. Your wife will need her own CSR. I would recommend one do a Chase Trifecta, and the other do a Capital One Trifecta.
@@babolatuser1 thanks for the info!
As noted above, you wouldn't be able to do that automatically. There's a possibility that you could call Chase up to see if they could link the accounts for you, but I wouldn't know for sure as I don't have experience with that. It'd be worth a quick call though!
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial hey thanks for getting back on this man much appreciated!
@@Genericmember OK. Phuck my advice then. Good luck.
Chase Trifecta is the best of the 2015-2019 era. There are much better setups out there now.
That's a fair assessment for sure! For beginners, I still think it's really competitive, but I think you can graduate to higher tier setups that give you more upside.
I know everyone says chase needs a refresh but will chase listen🤔
Haha I know how you feel!
Chase needs to upgrade those card for real
I wouldn't be mad about that!
I want to say I do regret getting the flex. I hate having to keep track of these ever changing categories every quarter and losing a 5/24 slot for that.
I worry I make the same comments on 5/24 videos. But that said, they are close to being the only set up you need. All I ask is a Freedom Card get Mobile Wallet at higher than 2x.
Haha I don't blame you. The 5/24 rule is extremely annoying and there's no denying that. I do wish they'd increase the earning rate on the CFU and add a few more unique categories to the cards, but that seems like wishful thinking these days haha.
I can’t stand that the flex and unlimited are virtually the same card. Wish they would change them and add a grocery category
In reality, the only main difference between the earning categories is 1.5x on miscellaneous purchases on the CFU and the 5x rotating categories on the CFF. It'd be nice to see a bit of a revamp for sure, although they're still valuable.
I feel like it is better because you can earn better with other setup!!!
It's a solid setup for sure, but depending on your spending habits, I would agree with folks that say you could get more value from other setups for sure.
If the Flex is no longer offered.. which one should we get
The Flex is still offered!!
just wish chase had better multipliers for gas and groceries, they’re lacking there- and 2% for other should be standard across the board now. chase really has gotten a bit complacent.
Trifecta is overrated. It would be better to go for Flex and churn the Preferred and grab the Sapphire down line after the 4 to 5 years then use all your points then. This is assuming you're in the game and have better options than the 1.5 FU or either the FU is your first or second card.
👍🏻
Thanks for watching man!
Bilt bests csr, southwest only partner that's missing. No af.
For a no-annual fee card, it's definitely solid! I wouldn't say it replaces these cards, but it can be a solid addition if anything!
1st 😊
Thanks so much for being here early again!! Ahmad barely beat you out but I appreciate you nonetheless 🥈
First
He’s done it again!! I appreciate you man! 👑
Very overrated with so many gaps and duplications.
in my personal opinion all their cards are boring and have way too many overlapping benefits. You own 1 Chase card, you already own 50% of their cards. Own 2, and you now own 100% of their cards.
True. Overrated!
Good mid tier setup that can provide great value and is easy to use! Overrated IMO but is a good setup. As always, great video and information Spencer! It was great meeting you yesterday in Las Vegas! As you know, huge fan of your content! 🫵
I completely get where you're coming from. They need to make some changes to it for sure, but for that early stage credit card user, I still think it's really solid. And same to you man! I was super happy to get to meet you in person and I really appreciate the kind words. Keep killing it on your end man!!
