Elton actually came half way out in the mid-70's in an interview when he said that he slept with all his friends! He thought at the time that everyone knew he was gay and was being cheeky with his answer to the interviewer. Of course, only his closest friends knew he was gay at the time and his fans had not one clue but Elton thought everybody knew!
Elton didn't write the lyrics. Bernie Taupin did. Elton wrote the music and they had no input on the other's part. So it definitely isn't Elton projecting.
