Elton wrote all the music for "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" in THREE DAYS in Jamaica, and the band recorded the entire album in two weeks at the "Funky Chateau" in France. It was the second album he released within 10 months in 1973, the other being "Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player."
Also the 17 tracks of 22 that were written for the album were recorded in 3 days in France.
The best one two punch on the album is Your Sister Can’t Twist and the way it bleeds perfectly into Saturday Night’s Alright. That was pure Gus Dudgeon magic.
I still have the original vinyls for all these Elton albums. My niece became a big Elton fan since she was a baby...and she loved listening to the records because 'she liked to watch it spin' lol.
Elton had such an amazing band. Some are gone but the beauty of the music lives on.
Now you need to go a little deeper down the rabbit hole with "Madman Across the Water"! Powerful and very moving, with the perhaps one of Elton's finest solos!
Great recommendation! I'd put Elton's first 5 albums against any artist. They were all so damn good! Even though he had some big hits (and a few nice songs) after the Yellow Brick Road album, I don't think he and Bernie were ever able to recapture the magic of those early albums. Just my humble opinion.

One of the best albums in the history of classic rock!!! the whole album is unbelievable! If had to pick one song that stands out for me on this LP, it would be "I've Seen That Movie Too". But the rest of it is simply just marvelous!!

So funny watching the look on Kel's face when she realizes what the song is about. Lol. Agree with you guys about the album. There wasn't one weak song. I can't think of many _single_ LPs that I can say that about, and this was a _double_ album!
I feel incredibly fortunate that the very first concert I ever attended was Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" tour back in 1974. I was already a huge fan and my mom took me when I was about 12. It was everything I could have hoped for, and more. What a way to be introduced to live music! On the other hand, it was also somewhat _unfortunate_ because all the concerts I went to after that were often a let-down by comparison. To this day, a young Elton was the best live performer I've ever seen. Really spoiled me from the start.
To Jaime & Victoria, "I've Seen That Movie Too" and "Harmony" are also two of my favorites. They didn't get a whole lot of airplay (especially the former) but I've always been a sucker for slow songs in a minor key. Cheers...

You could make a really great triple feature episode by doing Pinball Wizard from the Tommy movie, Elton John and the big band version of The Who from the 1989 all star Tommy charity show and then either the version of Pinball Wizard from Join Together, The Who's 1989 live album or the 1972 symphonic version with Rod Stewart singing Pinball Wizard or one of the more recent symphonic versions with Roger singing lead. Lots of fun to be had.

Huge credit to you two for doing "All the Girls Love Alice". It's a much loved and really never spoken about Elton John classic from what I think is clearly his best album. This is Elton at musically/production-wise his most intense and edgy as well as Taupin at his darkest and most playful.

I was reading not too long ago an article where Elton John said that his interactions with Bernie Taupin were very rare. When he would receive Bernie's lyrics, which most of the time weren't delivered by Bernie himself, he never asked Bernie the meaning of the songs. Bernie never mentioned to him the meaning of the songs. Elton said he would receive the the lyrics and write music to them most of the time not knowing what the song was really about unless the lyrics were obvious. The interviewer asked him, isn't that kind of an odd relationship to have? Elton said I suppose but this is how it's been done since the beginning.

Actually had the opportunity to see Elton John in concert at the dodger stadium back around 1975. The opening acts were Emmy Lou Harris and Joe Walsh. Incredible concert!!!

I saw him at the L.A. Forum in '74 on the Yellow Brick Road tour. I was 12 and it was the first concert I ever went to. Elton and the band were absolutely incredible! I would have much rather seen Emmylou and Joe Walsh to open though! I had to settle for Kiki Dee.

I've seen him live no less than 15 times. He never toured with a brass section at any of the shows I'd be been to as far as I can recall. Now I know you guys said you saw him live but I highly recommend reacting to his live in Australia record. It's truly amazing. Some of the greatest live versions of a few classic EJ songs.

et al, it was Elton that we anticipated. And waited on. I saw him in Central Park a few years later. Awesome talent.

Elton was know as a "Showman" He had a different outfit for each of his performances. He became known for wearing funky glasses. I remember watching this on the Muppet's. Loved your hat Kel n Rich. LOL :-)
WOW another time warp reaction for me..was great to see this and had to dig out the vinyl and play the whole album after writing this as i LOVE that album..as for Crocodile Rock..well some info on that..Elton was in Australia when an Aussie band called "Daddy Cool" had released a song called "Eagle Rock" he was so inspired by that song he went back to the U.K and with Bernie Taupin wrote "Crocodile Rock"..still a great song and i also remember seeing the Muppet Show with Elton.

It was a classic and his best album. The final track to side 3 of the double LP Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. The lyrical content was as always classic Bernie Taupin. Shone in songs like Indian Sunset. Totally not commercial but great story telling from the Madman across the Water album in 71. Intense. For it's time it was unique and the opening track of Funeral for a friend of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was the perennial opening song for concerts. Amazing atmosphere even in recent times with a thunderstorm opening. Elton still has a strong voice at 72. For those who were teenagers in the 70's,Elton was an icon and musical genius. Great to see he's still recognised now. So many other songs could review. Dirty little girl,Elderberry Wine,Ive seen that movie too (B grade actor relationship liar lyrics),Tiny Dancer,Your Song.
I always loved this song. I wore out 2 album sets of Yellow brick road. One of my other favs, (there are so many on these albums) is Gray Seal. Enjoy as always.

Fantastic and funny video. Didn't ever seen that muppet show part. I have always like Elton John since i heard him first time, first album i heard was don't shoot me i'm only the piano player, early 70's was that.
As others have said, in the day, Elton was a real rocker. This was a super album,. I had it and I wore it out. It was back in the days when they didn’t save really good songs to spread them out to make sure the next albums sells. With Elton and Bernie, good songs was never a problem.

"Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me" has brass section. It also features backing vocals from Beach Boys Carl Wilson and Bruce Johnston plus Toni Tennille (Captain and Tennille).
Just got back from Vietnam , Wes-Pac cruise, and I was a whopping 19. And with all the stereo stuff from Japan, Yellow Brick Road was played constantly. And very load ! When I hear this stuff I am 19 again. Oh to be that age in body again !
He has used brass sections both on record and live. Tower of power played on 74`tour and during the mid 80`s he had a brass section on tour. Shoulder Holster from Blue Moves is a good example of using brass arrangements to lift a song

Note: I’ve long treated the four songs from ‘Sweet-painted Lady’ to ‘All the Girls Live Alice’ as an inseparable, awesome song suite... with ‘Dirty Little Girl’ being my personal favorite of the four. But they’re all great! 🤗
Elton has, in fact, used brass on many of his albums, notably on Honky Chateau, Don't Shoot Me, and Caribou from his classic era, and later on 1980's 21 at 33 and 1985's Ice on Fire.
It was an ARP Pro-Soloist!! A “simple” monophonic synthesizer with the first pressure sensitive keyboard. Tony Banks of Genesis also used one!! Able to quickly shift between sounds!

Elton used famed arranger Paul Buckmaster on many albums and worked with the Tower of Power (horns baby) so yes he did work with horn sections and orchestras.

Rich- Kiel’s REALLY CUTE little hat remind me of Columbia (female character) in Rocky Horror Picture Show. If she hasn’t yet seen it (HORRORS) she has GOT TO HEAR THE MUSIC! Just play “There’s a Light” for starters and then show her the movie. What a classic! She will love the musical arrangements done by Frankenfurter’s “handyman”. Great stuff!
You guys should do 'Someone Saved My Life Tonight' or 'We All Fall in Love Sometimes/Curtains' sometime. Beautiful songs from an underappreciated album (Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy - the first studio album in history to ever debut at #1 on the Billboard Charts).

"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is one of my "desert island" albums. Please do them all! :) On a side note, I think my first exposure to Elton John was when he appeared on The Muppet Show and performed Crocodile Rock.

I listened to this song (an old favorite of mine) on a whim today on my lunch break - my mom (a BIG Elton fan) called this one a toe tapper
Some neat things about this song...well, the original band of Nigel Olsson on drums/vocals, Dee Murray on bass/vocals and Davey Johnstone on electric guitar/vocals are pretty special. You also hear Ray Cooper on tambourine, who soon after this joins the band proper, and Kiki Dee helping out on backing vocals (famously she later performed the duet with Elton 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart). Nigel Olsson record the car 'sound effects' (he recorded himself driving in his own car) heard at the end.

Other than Ian Anderson,Elton is the ultimate in showmen. I’ve seen him twice on stage over the years, 1974 and 1991. Both times he put on amazing shows.
With that album, the synthesizer was used with a master at the keyboard, "Benny and the jets" sounds live, but it isn't.
Have you ever made a "Rich's first reaction" vid with music dear to Kel that Rich has never heard? If not, would love to see.

@@ericanderson8886 Most classical pieces are pretty long with several movements. We're talking like 1/2 hour to over an hour for an entire classical piece.
EJ used lots of brass, plenty of examples over the decades. For instance try the album Caribou.

If you listen to "The Ballad Of Danny Bailey" off the same album/cd, you will hear a lot of orchestration that was an actual group of guys playing woodwinds, strings, etc.... so yes he did use live orchestrated instruments.
For one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs, try "Someone Saved My Life Tonight". I know you've most certainly heard it, Rich, but I think Kel Will LOVE it!😁🎼

Saw them in San Diego when this album debut and do not remember any horns. Elton was great on piano and syn but Davey Johnstone was also great on the lead guitar. Amazing group.
