They would behave the same offroad if the Touareg would have the options like rear locking differential from factory, air suspension and some all terrain tires. Touareg actually makes more sense to buy because it is good onroad too. Best of both worlds.
"Without rear axle locking, the problems just get bigger"
Yeah not like you can get one with it or anything
Yes you can. The first version
TFL got ahold of a VW Touareg put some proper tires on it and it is doing everything as well as any off road machine can do. This video does not prove the VW is weaker, it only proves the tires were wrong. ;)
True. Tires are number one factor.
It's also a biassed review that lack any credibilty as the two vehicles compared did not have the same specs as you point out.
The Tuareg kicks major ass, I can't believe all it can do with does crap tyres!!!
The speakers voice reminds me of TV from the 70's :D
Michael Hansen I thought I was the only one.
Ahahahah
They are comparing what you get at a certain price point (Discovery TDV6 SE €43.300 and Touareg V6 Tdi €46.000), a much more useful comparison would be comparing vehicles with same equipment to see which is more capable and perform better on and off road, regardless the price point. I rather see a Touareg V6 Tdi with air suspension, front, center and rear locking diff, than this V6 Tdi with coil springs suspension with no height adjustment and no locking diff.
lol AT tyres on Discovery and road on Touareg. what a nice review LOOL
both look like street tyres to me. LR wearing stock OEM Michelins.
Exactly, both had road tyres on.. admit it, the VW was ssshhhhite pahahaha
The narrator sounds like he should be reading out a Charles Dickens novel.
Tires and ground clearance. Touareg with off-road tires and air suspension will do as well as the LR. Mine has never been stuck and I've never had to lock the differential. Very dependable ride and gets a little over 18 mpg mixed driving. It is a tank!
I agree,my v8 is unbeatable
Pahahaha your VW couldn’t cope with standard kit like the Disco. You’ll never beat the D3 chap.
just a wild guess VW is more reliable and better car overall
The touareg is every bit as good as a D3 and more reliable...I'm amazes the D3 got through this test without breaking the crankshaft
Yea - I'm a fan of the 3 versions of VW Audi & Porsche of the same frame - I've driven the VW & supercharged Audi A5 & I love them both.
Iv taken a Disco off road and to be honest I have never known any car car/4x4 to handle terrain like this machine...inclines on gravel you couldn't walk up..the disco takes with ease...incredible machine, amazing technology...but will break your heart on repair bills. Jan 13; 4 tyres, full service, brake pads, discs-€1400, May 13- 2 EGR valves €1000.
Why dont u do test again and swap tires and we will see whos gonna be stuck. More often
Narrators Ssssss's whistling killed me.
MrAfflixion you fucker!! I hadn’t noticed until NOW
British reviewers always sees the British car win lol.
Indian car*
@@simesimicevic8713 LR was owned by Ford back then wasn’t it?
this is not a fair test. the touareg in this test didn't have the air suspension or the rear locking differential that was available. Those two options would've dramatically changed the out come.
Also the Landrover had a lot better tyres on. I'm a forester, and am offroad a lot, mine is good offroad, and i used to have an L200 Warrior which i'd pull landrovers out of mud with. anything will be better with decent tyres
+Adam Todd yes tyres is on land rover very better then on touareg
bullcrap what if i say exchange thhe land rover discovery for a range rover supercharged sport edition huh it would smash the ass of the tourag even if it had air suspension and rear locking differential
Yuqi Bai don't be to smart !
And if the Land Rover was also fitted with the optional electrically locking rear diff, it would have been that much better again.
I have a Discovery 4, my son has a VW 4WD. Off road, the Land Rover will eat the VW for breakfast any day of the week under pretty much any conditions. The VW has other advantages though - horses for courses.
I Would go for the VW if I had to drive it every Day
Actually has reasonable gas mileage, indeud
I have a 2007 tiguan 3.0 tdi it's done over 160k miles never ever missed a beat
Power doesn't move a vehicle in mud, traction does.
All touraregs sold in the states have transfer case locker as well as differential limited slip.
Yup. And can be had like mine with a rear locker in the early years.
Even NOT as a Land Rover fan, I think comparing these two is a bit unfair. Touareg is more of an SUV with Luxury and some off road capabilities adn Discovery is the off roader with Luxuries. Fairer comparison wuold be between Touareg vs XC90 or Lexus RX450 or Infinity SUVs.. Simliar on-road off roaders. Discovery should be run against Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol.
Agreed
A Touareg with proper extra's is a match for the Discovery off Road. But it will cost more but then again you will really be paying for the VW reliability.
bighands69 extras?
Nicholas Enston The narrator said something along the lines of locking diffs for an extra 4,000 euros
+Nicholas Enston Yes.
And what tyres do you think are on the the Discovery ???
the vw has bad tires
Yep. Put the right tires on and it would have done better. The Land Rover also had the air suspension, so not really fair there either. Full disclosure: I drive the Touareg V8 and love it. Expensive as hell to maintain, but worth it.
Not the tires so much as the car is weighty. Waring down the tires more often
If all 4 wheels are spinning and its not going through the mud. Its not the diff or computer programs that differ. Its the tires. Very important part in these kind of tests.
I've taken my Lr3 everywhere and its been quite reliable. No serious issues. With the 4.4L v8 I think it has plenty of power. It's not a race car but its not supposed to be
Do you think the disco 3 or 2 is better?
The Disco 3 is definitely better. Has way more technology in it. It's more reliable too. They are both cool trucks. The D3 is better though.
***** I really want to get one for off roading, and maybe a road trip.
Would be great for that
Tyres would not have made a difference, on a snowy covered mountain road in Wales 2018, I came across a stranded 2017 Touareg in my 1999 Discovery Td5 which has road tyres fitted.
The occupants were genuinely distressed , due to the fact they had a three week old baby with them, I was amazed that the VW could not make any progress whatsoever and was stuck.
The gentleman so pleased at our arrival, immediately asked myself and wife to pull them up the hill, I was very sceptical because it was very steep, I fitted a tow rope engaged low box and proceeded forwards up the hill.
Amazingly our £850 Discovery got us and that totally hopeless £65000 Touareg to the top.
Somehow a Landrover just works.
Considering your only evidence is "Landrover", your conclusion is dubious.
We all know which one wins on reliability .
3 years ago i watched this and wanted so badly to buy an LR3.. i did it and it was the worst decision i ever made. it was a used car and a terrible one at that.. soooo many problems. never ending.. now i have the VW and have never looked back ;)
Exactly! Glad somebody set this straight
Yep - the VW is great for running up and down the bitumen between Brisbane / Gold Coast / Sydney. My son has one. I like going off road and a lot of camping and fishing trips in remote places though, so I have the Discovery 4. Off road, it is in a completely different class than the VW. I've had mine for 5 years now and have almost 150 thousand k's on the clock, and have not had any problems with it at all.
At a huge costing yes! Not all LRs are bad. Do your research on the vehicle your buying 1st. I’d never buy the VW Touareg at that price!! Way too expensive. If your taking it off road why would you? The VW isn’t designed for it, so stick to your roads boy
Dash Cam Gold Coast should have bought a Hilux to begin it would still be running
With exactly right tires touareg is like a tank man...i own one and im very proud of that german beast
..... the real "beast" is the Touareg V10 TDI !
@@joscholz8991 my cousin owns that 5.0 313 p.s beast
Fantastic car
you forgot to rate the interior and entertainment system, which in the case of the landrover still comes from the Stone Age
To actually use Land Rover you must have a mechanic friend and your pocket must be very deep while Touareg is cheaper to maintain by roadside mechanics in our Nigeria. Land Rover must visit the company.
El texto que copies aparecerá automáticamente aquí
‘‘This is not a fair comparison. I agree the VW was more expensive but they’re comparing a Land Rover with air suspension and terrain response with a VW without an option that was available back then. The narrator specifically berates the VW for not having rear locking differential however they failed to test with the Touareg that actually has air suspension and rear locking differential. A center and a rear differential lock were indeed options available on the Touareg.
Owned a 2004 Touareg V8 and know I drive a 2008 Discovery 3 SE V8. I like the Land Rover a little more.
I wonder how the Touareg won dakar rally several times
crawler oz Land Rover were busy finding places that haven't ever scene vehicles. Mind the Dakar isn't really much of a Touareg like the Bowler isn't much of a Discovery!
@@loudandproud2058 v10 with pinion gears and central dif+ reardif lock +alll locked diferential x3
the tuareg v10 have many dif. locking sets in console and more air hight in supsension
Land Rover was broke down
I rate the VW. Towing boats and slippery slipways, great road manners and better performance. Not to mention very reliable.
the v10 tdi perhaps not so reliable… still tho what an engine! what a car
$8000 more for options that would knock the LR3 in the teeth... But you could also use the $8000 for the new engine your going to need in the LR3 at about 56000 miles...
I'm not a fan of the Toe-rag. Even its looks aren't much of a winner, to me. Yet, I found it looked quite capable in this video. As some have mentioned, pitting it against a Disco is a little unfair, but so is the price of the Toe-rag, to be brutally honest. And looks; as an LR fan you'd expect me to say, the Disco is the better looker. You'd be right. It's half Range Rover- half Defender styling is a winning combination, and is exactly what it is intended to be. Still, a secondhand Toe-rag at a reasonable price (half the price of the equivalent age Disco) would be hard to sniff at, if you can find one.
But the Touareg will have better reliability and that is what the extra price is for and the same applies for the more expensive Toyota Land Cruiser.
bighands69 Modern LR's are reliable, especially the D4.
Nicholas Enston
I have an LR3 and it has been a disaster. I have friends who have had the LR4 and they have had issues as well. My wife has a Evoque and has no issues at all.
Land Rover are putting investment into its production and that will more than likely improve reliability.
But for me it is too little too late.
Well balanced review of two vehicles that cost the same, refreshing approach !!!
not fair in this muddy road car performance basic decided by tires
I know a car which will easily beat the VW on the off-road course and it is called the Land Rover Defender it weighs at 8 tonnes and in Britain Farmers use it
8 tonnes. What is it a Land Rover defender lorry.
vw has dif locking if you get the right model.
Sounds like an advertisement for Discovery by Land Rover.
Should have gone with the air ride and locking rear diff. Would be a much better comparison
Also, in the final comparation result, they forgot one thing to mention: the poor fiability of the Discovery :))
Yes the VW is the clear and much better choice. The Brits giving the test were extremely bias to the land rover. Here in the US only the wealthy buy them as a status symbol. The land rover will be in the shop being worked on way more than it will be in you drive way
Btw Motorvision is german....
I'd like to see this with different tires.
Curt Jenkins and you’d get the same result my dear. The Vw will never compare to any LRs off the road chap. They are more of a road and wet grass car! At a huge costing! Why would you? I’d go for the Range Rover if your stupid enough to go for the Touareg that’s crap off road
@@cez1869 no it's not lr is a crap car
GreyBroadcastHQ You’ve never ridden or owned one then by your reply. Admittedly reliability isn’t top of the league with the LR’s, but this comment was about tyres, look closely at the start of the video, both have similar tyres on them, the Disco is clearly the overall winner here. Can you imagine how the Disco would perform with some decent all terrain tyres on too? Unfortunately my dear as per the narrator said... the VW had to take an alternate path hahahahahahaha
@@cez1869 the VW they had didn't come with the optional offroad package ( differential locks, air suspension and sway bar disconnect) . With that package and propper tires, it would destroy the Land Rover : ruclips.net/video/5uYh8apNzcs/видео.html
Here it is in the mud : ruclips.net/video/3aCREWKyijo/видео.html
@@cez1869 Lol "you've never ridden or owned one then" you're projecting bud. You're clueless about the touareg and obviously know nothing about it. Go watch it smoke LR's on TFL's channel.
I Lov my Dicavorey.2017.
how many thimes did the land rover break down during this test haha
@Milorad Novakovič 5555555555555555555555555555
Probably used 12 , as they're too expensive to repair.
If you put some decent off road tires on the Touareg it will would run circles around that heap of a British breakdown even in off-road.
So answer this question. Which of the two is currently driven on the road? Lol I know my 7L is still on the road and also off the road when I take er out to go shooting I’m the mountains.
First of all just look at both cars the way they look like and from mechanical point of view touareg is also a very strong build massive car and if to compare off road capabilities of touareg to cars like bmw x5 or mercedes ml or gl or glk there is nothing to campare. Land rover was build to keep up off roading traditions. Touareg was build to be an ultimate car which means to be a luxury car , family car , off road car , and also has enough of power under the hood v6 diesel as well as v8 petrol engine and suprisingly touareg does this all very well .land rover was able to finish off road test without having any problems but from the other side touareg was fighting a little but still managed to go .
But did the lr make it home?
If the Touareg had the rear locker and the same tires, they would be on par.
Did anybody else notice that the Touareg model kept changing? Keep an eye on the Touareg headlights.
Туарэг DAS AUTO!💪💪💪😎👍🔥🔥🔥
Not a fair fight, the touareg was meant to lose this comparison by you guys!
don198769 no air suspension no rear diff lock, and this one is not really valid because it comes as is from the factory, the tires.
The Land rover broke down after test again lol...
That is your script
Well, this is stupid. Discovery comes with some-what decent tires for this type of terrain. Yes, Discovery is far superior in off-roading but comparison needs similar tires.
If it were my 2014 Touareg TDI R-line out there it would’ve been the clear winner.
Eric Alvarado don’t think so, you would have had to take the “easy gentle route” like your sister model did! Hahaha, VW are like the X5 and the Q7s.. they aren’t designed to go off road, stick to tarmac my dear.
very different tires on the vehicles, clearly visible. very biased english review...would really like to see the real thing tho
The touareg tires were nearly bald
At 6:17 clearly see the discovery has A/T tyres poor Touareg had summer Tyres!Hahaha Lets swap Tyres than do this test!!!
Yes!
Not really a fair comparison one with air suspension, better tires and locking diffs pretty fair I would say lol touareg didn't pretty good for base model
Bad Test, they haven’t got the same wheels model
why not put touareg tires on the discovery 3. it's clear that VW has summer tires and Discovery has off-road tires. You want the touareg to go off-road with summer tires. Let's find 3 summer tires to find out if it's so good on the off road😉
You should have used the same tires and a Touareg with a rear lock. This comparison is completely unfair but could be for a reason....
Next time use the same threaded tyres. Apples vs apples
I was just about to say the same thing. All European off roaders bar Land Rover sell them with road tyres. Land Rover as standard sell something else. Don't know what it is. Perhaps intermediate off road tyres. You can clearly see the tread difference in that video. Also I know the landy will be better, but the VW hardly struggled with the incline like the narrator suggested.
Tires...
Is the concept of "similarly equipped" foreign to Europe?
The comparison here is value! To get the off road features on the Touareg that the LR comes with will cost an additional $8000. They both appear to me to have road tires on them. (I'm guessing the stock tires that came from the factory) The LR has a bias to off roading so probably comes with a slightly more aggressive tire, and the Treg has a less agressive tire that's more suitable for speed and handling. Add locking rear diff, air suspension, and comparable tires to the "base model" Treg, it outperforms on and off road. It will cost more; but worth it.
Who needs to drive to work through a quarry?
OlNey the bast.Land Roubor. is 1
The Bulldog wins, but you pays your money and takes your choice!!!
the toe-rag is so like the merc, bmw and audi 4x4, nice and quick on the road but a bit shit off road.i had a toe-rag, hated it, vw shoukd stay making golfs. got new disco love it, no more German pretend 4x4 for me.
Put some damn offroad tires on the touareg , the car is not bad it still have tractiin control which can handle in this situation
Touareg is not all terain vehicle. It is something in the midle. This is not good comparsion. I love touaregs becouse I can drive 140mph on highway and I can trail my boat with this. Its safe as well. In the city it has not comparsion. And when I would like to go to my cottage its ideal car. Its not tank... its SUV....
A properly kitted Touareg is able to match the Land Rover off road but it is more expense that is the only thing.
But as you said you can drive on a highway.
+bighands69 bollocks
Очень классно
but touareg facelift after 2007 all have central dif lock..
I pulled out a brand new land rover stuck in snow with my 330 000 km touareg last week. Nothing ever stopped this car.
so none of you think that tires were the variable here? Seriously why dont auto journalists understand its unfair!
I Would go for the VW if I had to own it for longer than a couple of years, as Land Rovers start falling apart around the time the warranty expires.
John McQ had my 2006 4.4 d3 for 5 years and done brakes once and one air spring. Done 230000 km
Only thing I think it’s on it’s last leg now the gearbox starts playing up when towing heavy load
The tires of touareg got muddy
My V10 would do a lot better.
My guess is that the engine would be to heavy
Its a fair test. The Touareg costs more. But I suppose any excuse has to be made, to defend the German machine.
A fully spec Touareg would have handled that more easily maybe not as well as the Discovery.
In the vid, it says at uphill touareg has big struggles...and there was none... British accent of reviewer reveals the one goal, to show D3 as superior
So yes, as I said the Land Rover's re-sale exceeds the loss for VW - my statement was not about why people purchase these or don't - both are pavement queens and the most abuse they will ever see are the brushes of a car wash - until a person who buys it used for it's original purpose - but the discovery has been a slow hulking low power pile used to haul kids & make Dad feel cooler on the weekends when forced to endure it
Unfortunately in the US it's difficult to find land to actually max out the capabilities of the Land Rover or even the Touareg and with how expensive these vehicles are I can understand why they aren't used for anything crazy. Repair costs are insane.
Land Rover is better offroader, but very oft is broken.
So because the touraeg had to go faster he looses. Is it because he was on street tires...
I say, thats a jolly good review old bean, spiffing. Tally ho chaps!
Claramente pagó mas Land Rover que Vw.
Туарег лучший
Land Rover it’s all Ford in mechanical terms.... says enough. Ford it’s a very good company but why paying 50% more.. . British cars are all over advertised but last less than a cheap ones.
Mud tires vs road tires! Don't try to fool us!
The toareg had some summer tires on i believe, flater then a butt cheek.
touareg engine borrowed from audi??? VW owns audi for gods sake:))
Angielski Rower się kończy to awaryjne samochody
German humour at its best
awesome
TOUAREG all day 💪
The engine is English made is a lion engine Google it it ain't a bmw engine at all.
Same engine in a Peugeot 407 and jaguar it's a lion brand made for Peugeot in Dagenham Ford. Also Peugeot makes diesel for Citroën Ford volvo mazda and they are generally a good unit unlike Renault who makes diesel for Mercedes a class and Nissan who in my opinion made a mistake with changing from the 2.8 6 cylinder to a 3.0 4 cylinder in the patrol. The patrol and amazon are far more superior than both land rover and VW. Just my say.
What do you think it would gain? Maybe a little traction but that's not going to make up for the lack of a decent offroad chassis, suspension and 4x4 system. The touareg is just a high up passat underneath and shows it when it's going against a real offroad car. Touaregs are good at what they were designed for - to sell well to idiots who want an image they'll never use.
