Hey all, there is a brand new song like this one out from Mambisimo Big Band featuring Yuliesky Gonzales again! It's a first single release for a full album, if you want to check that out: ruclips.net/video/zoWp_Wi4ymE/видео.html
@@DTux5249 I’m not completely sure, and I’m not a trumpet player, but I think it’s because unlike woodwind instruments where personality mostly comes from the movement of the fingers, trumpet players have to also use their lips for notes. Again, not completely sure this is what he meant but I think it might.
@@coalkingryan881 definitely i think that to be able to manipulate your sound with such precision and flexibility while maintaining control of your embouchure with the trumpet is what is more impressive
@@DTux5249 It's because the trumpet only have 3 buttons, and not one for every note, like for example a piano. You have to shape the notes with your mouth, rather than your fingers, and thats really hard to do.
Love it! I like the way he mixes a “tipico” Cuban style with some bebop, all in clave, and a great big trumpet sound. Mossman is one of my favorite Latin jazz arrangers.
People are blown away by this style of trumpet playing today because it's a lost art. Nobody plays off-beat like this anymore in American jazz, but during the Swing Era (and just before it) this was common among cornet/trumpet players, especially Henry "Red" Allen, whose whole style was basically evading the beat and playing all around it.
WOW! That trumpet player reminds me of the good ol days when I used to play with many latin bands (Tito Puente, Monchito , Celia Cruz, Stevie Wonder, and countless jam sessions in New York in the Village to name but a few) as a sideman. At 65 I had a bad accident where I lost all my teeth a few years ago and never played trumpet again, but in my hay day I had many followers and performed nationwide. In fact I was known as the muted trumpet dude in the jazz scene in Los Angeles. Shame not very many recordings years ago of me performing before the RUclips and internet thing, but I have some great memories. This trumpet player was common in my day. Especially from some of my Puerto Rican, Cuban and Mexican trumpet player buddies. Thanks for an awesome clip of an awesome solo.
Tough to play a wind instrument without teeth! I was a pretty hot harmonica guy in my day, til they took out my teeth. Playing with dentures is an invitation for embarrassment.
I was totally blown away by this solo while recording live in studio, the solo by Yulieski Gonzalez. Me, Jorre, was playing lead sax there so I got the privelege to experience this very live and in person. What an amazing rhythmic and melodic expression... I was lucky that I didn't have to play backings, because I would probably have dropped out by listening to this solo in awe 😂. I know that kinda everybody of the band had the same thought on his face during this solo: "Yuli waauw, ehm, but maybe DON"T take so much risk in a live improvised solo session, ... ehm, oh whatever, this is too cool!" 😂 Sorry Yuli for butchering the rhythms you play, it's pretty intranscribable in traditional western music notation, so see it merely as a guide. If you like this music, you can check out the full tune this solo was taken from here: ruclips.net/video/Zup7rmDj6fE/видео.html It's from a live studio session with the Mambisimo Big Band, conducted and all tunes arranged by Michael Mossman (Michel Camilo, Tito Puente etc). You can follow the band for more and upcoming music on Instagram and RUclips @mambisimobigband or on Facebook. Cool stuff coming up pretty soon!
I like that: 'it's pretty intranscribable...so see it (the transcription) merely as a guide." I followed the solo with the transcription and Yulieski freely borrowed beats from one note to another. Perhaps the best you can do is add, 'with a latin style' at the start.
Thanks a lot for the transcription. Like every transcription, it should be considered as a starting point, a way to understand and learn licks and patterns. Which is already a huge help. The rest (groove, rythm, articulation) should result from active listening of the solo and the tune. Musicians have to do their homework too afterall ;). About Yulieski, I had the pleasure and honor to play this very tune with him during a private event. He was such a nice and enthusiast person. Always positive and supportive. And such a briliant musician as well.
Once upon a time I dreamed that kind of music. Then I realized how much talent, physical ability and musicianship it would take to even be able to think of doing that and went to work in a radio factory. Que talento.
I can almost hear him talking through the horn. Specially from 0:15 to 0:20. His tone matches the Cuban speech accent so well. So much personal flavor coming through.
Yes, Yuliesky was playing at maximum cool. I played gigs with two trumpeters who could play like that but that was more than 50 years ago. I LOVE to see/hear young men AND women who can really show us something special. It gives us hope and comfort about the future of music.
El Yulyyy 🔥🔥🔥Estudie en la misma escuela y no me equivoque….siempre me dije este muchacho va ser una estrella desde pequeño tocaba a otro nivel… abrazongos hermano de los años❤
This man played this like a BOSS!!! At that level, a musician is having fun and reading the sheet music like it's the Matrix. Measure 24 gets EVERY time🎺🔥
Most definitely. I'm the lead sax player on this session, and we did 3 takes I remember. All very different and amazing, but this one felt incredible. Transcribed this beautiful moment that I experienced live, Yulieski is an amazing trumpet player and person.
those who love trumpet sound like me , will tend to like any solo made by this instrument !!!! Very good !! What I like the trumpet it does lot of space to other instrument despite doing solo .. its vibration are very concise .. it like a compressed sound with loads of energy !! ( “nuclear vibration” )
I hate that culture of looking for "insane", "epic", looking to be "blown out". I like beautiful music. And yes this is a beautiful solo. But let's simply enjoy the beauty of it instead of making it part of a mindset that I personally find unhealthy.
Thanks Jeff. Yuliesky always brings the latin free going vibe, there is by the way since this recording 6 years ago a new release featuring a Yulieski solo from the Mambisimo Big Band ruclips.net/video/zoWp_Wi4ymE/видео.html This is shorter and more as an answer to the singers, but these lines are so tasty played
Wow there is a "divine intervention" going on there! Thank you so much for sharing it and transcribing the untranscribable!😛 It is wonderful to see one musician supporting and elevating the greatness of another. It is very inspiring and very noble of you!
Thanks Lua! Yuliesky is a humble fun guy an great musician to play with. Lovely to see other people here discover that due to this transcription video too. He's a hidden treasure. By the way, was sweating it to not screw up that sax soli right after that amazing solo, only imagine that we'd thrown it in the thrash can due to me 😂
Still am! 😁 playing lead alto, its an amazing band to experience. In fact, after a long hiatus, we're about to record again in the same studio with Mossman again as conductor/arranger in a few weeks for a follow up session. Looking so much forward to that!

Holy shit he's playing with so much personality
Don’t take this the wrong way, but that’s way harder to do on trumpet than so many other instruments. Totally agree. He smoked it.

He was also "playing IN CLAVE". That is the "cuban secret weapon" for the latin swagger, brother. Cheers!
@@evelioroque3706 There's a New Orleans variation on the clave, actually. It's called the Big Four.
Interesting! But in this case the pattern was "3 - 2" for the cuban clave!@@kafenwar
A trend then
It died and now it’s appearance is considered new and fresh because the generations that knew the style as commonly used are gone

Holy frack thats epic
"Frack"? Never heard that one before. 🤣
I like what u did there fellow brasser
NO WAY I've found someone else who uses Frack
Battlestar Galactica? 😆
Yes
Its not about all the super high notes and tricks. Yuliesky just gave an old school authentic solo that remind us of why we love Cuban jazz. Bravo.
That is actually not "super-high", actually "mid-high", but the performance is absolutely amazing, even given the "moderate high-ness"...
Once upon a time I dreamed that kind of music. Then I realized how much talent, physical ability and musicianship it would take to even be able to think of doing that and went to work in a radio factory. Que talento.
Few people's hands ever catch up to their ears as far as musical ability, it's no reason to stop trying.
I can almost hear him talking through the horn. Specially from 0:15 to 0:20. His tone matches the Cuban speech accent so well. So much personal flavor coming through.
This brings back memories of when I lived in Cuba, this is the type of music you would hear on the streets.
His solo was beyond insane, the other best part was the facial expressions and reactions of the other band members. 🤣
When the other musicians look over and smile like holy shit, that’s when you know it’s fire
The musicians' reactions were very informative.

Or people with well educated good taste that actually dislike this
