That’s why the switch was difficult to find for you. -The steering should be very light at parking speeds. When you drive faster, especially above 100, it should get very heavy. The centering of the steering is fixed, so if the car pulls you should put the steering wheel in the position it wants to center to. And then align it. You can also change the position of the steering command to the rack with the adjuster behind the driver strutmount. -Only XMs with the PRV V6 got this steering system. It was developed for the SM in the 70s to eliminate torque steer for “high power” fwd cars. Every CX with power steering(from 1980 and on they all have it I think) has the same system as well. -Because the steering isn’t connected to the wheels directly, it feels a bit weird in the beginning. But after a while you get used to it. Just dont try to correct it all the time while driving. Let the wheel go and you feel the car will want to drive straight on its own, no matter what conditions. Lightly touch it to keep it in lane. Extremely relaxed once you are used to it. -It looks like the rear of the car is a bit too low, very easy to adjust. The height of the car is controlled with a rod on the anti-roll bar. -The brakes feel different because you open a valve with hydraulic pressure with your foot. But under the pedal is a spring, to make it a bit more progressive. To me it feels very natural. -Hood insulation is missing -Next to the rear window controls and the heated seats is a button for the height of the armrest. Only works when the car is running. -The suspension has a sport mode, next to the gear lever. Normally it is in auto mode. For the front and rear it has an extra sphere with damper. The computer can shut it of or on depending on your driving. In sport mode they are permanently cut off, so it is firmed up. -The glove box has a gas strut to raise the lid. Yours is broken, almost every XM has or had this issue. Love your car, it is a very nice spec. I love my XMs, to see people get enthusiastic about it is a lot of fun.

Been thinking, decades on traffic, that comfort is actually pretty great as passive safety. Example that XM, you have so relax feel there, so no need to rush and race on a road to get you there as fast as possible. Rush some weird level vanish from your shoulders when feel comfortable. So maybe you will be a bit late when driving easily, but you will get there. So f***n what, no one would remember your late on next year, shit comes and goes,

Surviving ones have been fixed though and are quite reliable. For this one (167hp) the best option might be CrossClimate. These tyres are great, Energy ones are economy tyres and are clearly mediocre. Their strength is high mileage durability.
I agree for Energy saver : expensive and quite poor performances for the brand. Crossclimate are fantastic : almost as good as winter tyres but quite good all year aroud. Disagree for reliability : Electronic is baaad. Worse than the 605, The Sister car. But I like both 😂.
Oh man what a dream car, I own a 1997 Peugeot 605 which is this cars sister car (same platform) and you can see those in Ronin also as the bad guys bodyguards cars, a very different machine compared to the XM, good but different.
Saw a XM for the first time in a magazine in 1988 (i was 11) and fell instantly in love with it. 37 years later and it is still a cool car! Btw: please get rid of the annoying backround music. I´m watching with pretty good headphones and find it quite distracting.
nice xm, my uncle in France, had one, he always drove citroens, please keep the radio if it' is connected to the middle of the steering so you can change stations and volumes, the xm if I remember right is gonna sensibly come down the faster you go, always fun videos , cool if you could show us the command to lower or upper the car I think it's in the middle between the seats
I hated the XM when I owned it, but today I can't hate it anymore. It was great to drive, but it was way to happy to spend time at the Citroen garage. Mine was a blue manual 1996 2,0 TCT Break. Great video, Bob :)
Lovely car, had lots of Citroën's down the years. The hydraulic suspension ride on them is sublime. Rolls Royce used Citroën suspension under licence for many, many years it was so good. Look in the boot of any old Rolls Royce and you'll find the green suspension spheres tucked away. Enjoy the car Bob, have you got a CX in your fleet? They're even more whacky especially in estate Safari version.
The Citroën is the most comfortable car I ever drove. As for cornering the xantia V6 Activa I think still holds the record on the" moose test maneuver" it corners quicker than a 911 turbo s
Fun to see an XM in the US:) Love the variety of cars on your channel! That's a very well-equipped XM, one point about the position of the lights switch: this car seems to have had a later '93 2 spoke wheel retrofitted, it would've come with the 1 spoke wheel, which would allow you to see the lights switch on the column. When Citroen put in the 2 spoke wheel they also moved that switch on the left stalk so it'd still be visible.
Cmq grande auto complimenti.
I live in Europe and have owned a lot of Citroen's with this hydropneumatic system (DS, BX, GSA, CX). This suspension is so special! It is really great. Never owned an XM though. It's a pity this beautiful XM is in the US. I would love to have it, it looks great 🙂
Following your channel and car wizard as well for a long time. Approx 90% of your cars are on my dream garage list as a petrol head getting to 50 yrs old 😎 Wishing you all the best in your business and Marry Christmas 🎄
You should know that it was produced from May 1989 to June 2000 (for 11 years). It was a car for mature people aged 40 to 60, appreciated because it was very comfortable, many sales representatives used it to make long trips to customers. And - as you say so well here in France Citroën is known for its very special, original and futuristic designs (a bit like UFOs). It was voted best car of the year 90 in Europe, 12 years after its big sister the CX which was also special in its kind. And of course, you showed at the beginning of the report the iconic DS (cabrio model) which is a legend in France and in Europe (it is featured in an American film "Welcome to Gattaca) with Ethan Hawks and Uma Thurman. I also recommend the Citroën SM powered by Maserati and which was the vehicle of the presidents of the French Republic in the late 60s, early 70s...and also of the national gendarmerie.

Frenchman here. Yes, OVNI is UFO in French (Objet Volant Non Identifié). The XM was a "real" Citroën, a brand that used to be the pride of French automakers as they made special, sometimes exceptional cars. Unfortunately, in this bland new world of bulky automobile clones, nowadays Citroën is just another brand of the Stellantis group that manufactures cars like umpteen other look-alikes. Buying a new car has become as exciting as replacing your old fridge.
OVNI - Objecto voador não identificado. Aka UFO hehe The needle in the right by the coolant temperature is the oil level, needs to be checked with the engine off and key on And for us here in Europe the XM is not weird, is just a cool car. Btw don't remove the factory radio, you will loose most of the remote radio and other functions.
The hydropneumatic suspension system was the most comfortable in the world. Rolls-Royce, a brand renowned for its demand for excellence in comfort, chose it for its cars. On 22 August 1962, General De Gaulle was the victim of an assassination attempt. He was in a DS, obviously fitted with this suspension. The fact that any car equipped with this system can run on 3 wheels saved his life. If he'd been in a Mercedes, he'd have been a dead man.
@@bikesfrench8524 I had 2 Citroën CX GTI Turbo 2. The 1st one was bought new and got wrecked in an accident, the 2nd one was bought used at the dealership and I drove it up and down Europe until I finally sold it with about 450000km and an engine still running like a champion. Such old cars now are not for me, I just don't want to invest either the funds or the time in taking care of an old car. I now drive a 2002 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 that runs perfectly and doesn't require much maintenance, and that's OK with me. But the Citroën CX GTI Turbo 2 was by far the most comfortable car I've ever driven in my life, far better than even the most luxurious cars I have ever driven. Thank you for the advice though. Happy new year!
This car is based on the same platform and architecture as the Peugeot 605 which were both best in class for the compromise between road handling and ride quality. Unfortunately, the 1990-1991 models suffered severe harness issues until they were all recalled to the plant for a major update. This bad reputation at launch killed their career in Europe. However the XM had its fan in Germany, and this video explains why. The PRV engine is extremely reliable, especially in this version with regular ignition cycles (compared to the DeLorean PRV).
@@euroasianbob9268 Hi Bob, yes the really problematic XM are from 1989 to 1991, and then things get a lot better. You might experience some slight engine hick-ups, but these are just calibration issue with no reliability consequence, also the anti-rollbar rod links might become noisy around 60k. Pre-July 1992 might suffer premature rear suspension control arm bushing deterioration. The engine and gearbox have no real issue and can last a long time. This car is of course full of hydraulics, and if it sat many years, please check that you have no leaks. If the hydraulic pump cycles all the time by a clicking noise, it means the suspension spheres are running out of gas. Thank you for your enthusiasm as always.
OVNI... Objet Volant Non Identifié... translates to Un Identified Flying Object... We, french speakers, sometime use the term when describing something unusual or weird hence the license plate on this car... Greetings from Montréal, Québec. 🖖 👽

I did some work on a Xantia years ago, very similar problems on that car as there are on this XM. The biggest headache is the wiring, without a diagram & power probe the faults are so difficult to locate all due to same color wires in the connector plugs. It is such a mess to sort out simple problems.

Premacy 4 or
Crossclimate +
- 3.0 L V6 167 205/60 R 15 91V
Crossclimate 2 or
Energy saver +
- 3.0 L V6 200 205/60 R 15 91W
Crossclimate 2
Even for frenchs this car is weird. But we love them. Even if they are quite unreliable.
Such an amazing car! Thanks for taking us along for the ride Bob.

I hated the XM when I owned it, but today I can't hate it anymore. It was great to drive, but it was way to happy to spend time at the Citroen garage. Mine was a blue manual 1996 2,0 TCT Break. Great video, Bob :)
Oh yes... The break were astonishing 👌
They're even more whacky especially in estate Safari version.
you should probably refill the speres, it will do wonders with the suspension
@@fredrikdahlinwinscher8881 they are all in perfect working order.
The XM was the culmination of the great Citroen brand.....
The Citroën is the most comfortable car I ever drove. As for cornering the xantia V6 Activa I think still holds the record on the" moose test maneuver" it corners quicker than a 911 turbo s
DeMuro tested her without acknowledged it.
@@DimitarStanev hmm. Why would someone have changed? I wonder if I should try and find a 1 spoke to put back?
Great video 👍 The next Citroen would be a CX safari turbo diesel epic economy and is rated load capacity over a metric ton😮

E' un icona del mondo automobilistico bellissima e comodissima . Ha avuto alcuni problemi di affidabilità come accensione, impianto elettrico, ecc. I live in Europe and have owned a lot of Citroen's with this hydropneumatic system (DS, BX, GSA, CX). This suspension is so special! It is really great. Never owned an XM though. It's a pity this beautiful XM is in the US. I would love to have it, it looks great 🙂

Merry Christmas to you too!

Really unique
Frenchman here. Yes, OVNI is UFO in French (Objet Volant Non Identifié).
The XM was a "real" Citroën, a brand that used to be the pride of French automakers as they made special, sometimes exceptional cars. Unfortunately, in this bland new world of bulky automobile clones, nowadays Citroën is just another brand of the Stellantis group that manufactures cars like umpteen other look-alikes. Buying a new car has become as exciting as replacing your old fridge.
Couldnt agree more!
OVNI - Objecto voador não identificado. Aka UFO hehe
The needle in the right by the coolant temperature is the oil level, needs to be checked with the engine off and key on
And for us here in Europe the XM is not weird, is just a cool car.
Btw don't remove the factory radio, you will loose most of the remote radio and other functions.
@@organiccold the radio is aftermarket. Would like to find one that works with steering wheel controls.
It’s rides like a water bed!! Very unique car though!

One day you'll find the "Holy Grail". That's one thing for sure. The CITROEN CX 25 GTI TURBO 2.
If you want I know someone who sells one go to France in the South West
@@bikesfrench8524
I had 2 Citroën CX GTI Turbo 2.

@@alexdenhartog3741 yup!
@@cyrildrewery6654 is this 92 updated and better on wiring?
@@cyrildrewery6654 great info! Thanks!
@@euroasianbob9268 yes 1992 is already improved from the factory. The problem was mostly earth points to the chassis

Citroëns are addictive. Biggest mistake made by Citroën is letting the Chinese design the newer models ( after the C5).
This car is like made by God. It is a preview for what Heaven is. And it is actually beautiful, you have to know how to look at it. This is a pre-facelift example and those little details that change it just ruined it (dashboard, airbags, even the badge in the middle). If I were you I wouldn't sell it.

Also: Objeto Volador No Identificado in Spanish, that's why Daniel heard the word in Puerto Rico.
I did some work on a Xantia years ago, very similar problems on that car as there are on this XM. The biggest headache is the wiring, without a diagram & power probe the faults are so difficult to locate all due to same color wires in the connector plugs. It is such a mess to sort out simple problems.
