    Couple of things to bear in mind...
    1. It’s a Renault Engine
    2. It’s a Navara chassis
    3. They strengthened it because the Navaras kept snapping their chassis
    4. If you want a realistic and valuable opinion on pick ups, watch a review from the States, Aus or South Africa. Those countries actually have such a larger consumer market for pick ups.

    Here's a cool mod you can do to your badge - remove the circle, and increase the lateral dimensions of each of the "star" arms by 300%.
    Or, Keep the circle, remove the star, and get a Nissan badge to put in the middle - no one will suspect you are in a Mercedes as a tradie

      Most companies make pick ups to compete in North America.... As much as this is a truck I would buy in Canada, Mercedes has given us the middle finger on this one... I actually kinda admire that.

    “World’s first pickup from a luxury brand”
    Not quite. Lincoln used to produce the Mark LT until 2008, and they also had the Blackwood in 2002-03. So this would be the third pickup truck from a luxury brand. Other than that, this is a really nice review! Keep up the good work!

      mrsmith427 yeah the F-150 Platinum was introduced to replace the Lincoln Mark LT. I think it just doesn’t count enough since it doesn’t come from a luxury brand. I’ve also heard that in the Tundra Platinum, they use Lexus grade leather.

    • @DestroyerWill
      @DestroyerWill 6 лет назад +6

      Probably should have said global luxury brand... Lincoln etc sold 99.9% into North America, and it will probably surprise you but there’s the rest of the world buying cars outside North America...

    The Nissan Navara, in North America, is known as the Nissan Frontier. Why in God’s name would I pay Mercedes-Benz money for a Nissan Frontier? Just go to your local Nissan dealer and buy a Frontier if you want one of these - and then take the $40K that you just saved and buy a spare Nissan Frontier, in case you damage your first one. Then take the $10K that you *still* have left over and buy your family a great summer vacation.

      Want a top of the line truck the Toyota Tacoma or Tundra, you can get an aftermarket set of badges, go hole ridiculous and put Rolls Royce or Bugatti, some other foolish silly look at me car. Big and wide? Get a Ford F 650 truck. Nissan makes shit cars with worse transmissions, your high! Megacruiser, 6x6, Toyota or Lexus version land cruiser. Only Nissan I’d own in USA is Pick up, with MANUAL OR STANDARD whatever there.

    The X-Class: the perfect pickup for people who know nothing about pickups and will never use it for more than shopping. There’s a reason leaf springs are used, to help the truck handle when carrying a load. And the extended bed ruins departure angles off road. If you want a pickup, buy a Ranger or a Hilux depending on your needs. If you want a useless waste of space; by this.

    All the Americans sperging out about their King Ranch/Denali/etc etc, can't they understand those trucks are just too big and fuel inefficient for the European market? This 'premium' truck looks too basic inside, and nowhere near as luxurious as a Laramie-Longhorn Ram or King-Ranch Ford truck. Looks more equivalent to Toyota, Nissan and Ford Mid-Size trucks available in the UK, but probably won't be as reliable or as durable, and will cost a heck of alot more to buy. Sorry Mercedes, I love your cars, but this truck leaves me cold.

    I'd like to see a real comparison between the X-Class and some North American pickups. Based on the review, I don't think it would go well for the MB. If you buy luxury pickup in North America, it is very luxurious. You can't really tell what materials feel like from a video, of course, but from what I can see, the X is more comparable to a mid-level trim F-150, Ram or Silverado/Sierra. Indeed, right before watching this, I watched an early review of the new Ram 1500 in the entry level Tradesman trim, and it didn't look significantly lower in trim than this X, with the only standout difference being the infotainment units in the respective trucks (the Ram has a radio with a few frills at that price point.

  • @FinnishPanther
    @FinnishPanther 6 лет назад +43

    I saw one of these X 250d's at a Mercedes Studio (the fancy showroom) in Berlin and it was an unbelievable heap of junk. It screamed Navara - ALL of the plastic inside feels crazy cheap (hard touch plastic on large surfaces) and even the plastic next to the air vents were super cheap. The concept looked pretty good, but the actual production model looks terrible.
    The only model in the whole Mercedes lineup is the Mercedes Citan, which is a re-badged Renault Kangoo (Google it).

    • @Tamak_
      @Tamak_ 6 лет назад

      Matthew Hebron And in all of a sudden you have two in your shop, looking at it for max 4 days, I get up seeing it, go from A to B with it, go along working with it etc etc, grom this video I can see that 45% of this car is just a 1:1 with the Navara, no doubt. Take a look at the Renault version of the navara, don’t know what it’s called but thats a 1:1 with the Nav, so Mercedes just replaced a few panels and the interior to their ‘standards’, for the rest it still remains the same.

    I have a Mercedes C class and I am a MB fan. I also need a truck right now. Even if this was available to buy, it only competes with the smaller trucks. I am looking at the F-150 King Ranch because I like luxury too. The bigger and more capable trucks are getting packed so full of luxury features it would make it difficult for the Mercedes to compete in that market since anyone who needs a pickup is buying one based on utility first and luxury second. I really see this as a niche market but if the X class can compete with the Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma and Chevy Colorado at less than $20K more than the premium trim levels then it could be viable.

  • @guseks8413
    @guseks8413 6 лет назад

    People have probably pointed it out already, but the reason it is a firm ride is because the bed is empty. The suspension on most pick-ups are set up for the bed to be loaded with about 300-400kg as it would be when it is used as a work car.

      Unless they discount it equally as heavily as the Navara, it looks like at least £10k extra for the badge, specced as similarly as possible. A £22k Tekna [after discount] becomes a £32+ X-Class Power.

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 6 лет назад

      The Nissan doesn't have disc brakes on the rear axle. Disc brakes need far more and regular maintenance than drum brakes, so their fitment gives no advantage and some disadvantages on a pickup that is likely to get dirty and wet.

      @dlossrz365 6 лет назад +1

      The Navara I saw last week had drums on the back and it was the np300. If yours has discs, it has discs. Have fun replacing discs due to corrosion and pads due to wear while those with drum brakes just drive on. The fitting of either drums or discs must vary with model and region, as indeed does most spec, including to which side the driver sits.

    FYI. The Nissan Navara comes with coil springs all throughout. Mercedes didn't have to do much modifying to fit coil springs in them. In fact the Navara already has one of the most luxurious rides of any pickup. This may be why Mercedes Benz chose this particular chassis.

    So Mercedes stormed the world and entered for the first time in the very competitive pickup sector, by taking crucial parts from a manufacturer that already had its problems in the chassis department, instead of starting this venture on a blank sheet of paper!

    as an Old School American I can't stand 4-door pick-ups, Pick-ups are for hauling cargo, and anything that seriously limits that doesn't belong on a pick-up, so I am glad to hear that Merc at least extended the bed

    We have a Nissan Navara (NP300) in our family and for you to know it came from factory with all coil-springs suspention, not that stupid firm suspention that u are comparing with the old pick ups; and btw that stupid firm suspention it is what allow the pick up to carry a lot of weight and keep a stable ride.

    it's really a shame they are not selling it in the best market for a truck, the US absolutely loves pickups.

  • @ilovelimpfries
    @ilovelimpfries 6 лет назад +28

    Bullshit, the chassis and body is the same as the navara. All mercedes tweak the shocks (all navaras came with coil suspension) and change the surface of the dash. Even the gear lever is from a nissan. You’re fooling yourself if you think merc changed the navara as radical as porsche did with the Q5. They even too lazy to even change the key.

    • @RemoveBeforeRace
      @RemoveBeforeRace  6 лет назад +3

      Let's break this down Mr Angry commenter:
      - Watch the video at least: I said within the first 5mins that the chassis is the same, just strengthened.
      - Body panels aren't the same, that's just a fact. Gear lever is different too.
      - I mentioned the key as a big big no no already. Again, watching the video helps before calling bullshit.
      Finally, I never said the Navara's change is as radical as any of my examples. I said VERY clearly that people LOSE THEIR SHIT when companies use another car's platform without seeing the resulting product: and you are the perfect example of this.

    • @hondatrix
      @hondatrix 6 лет назад

      Mate, it's NOT strengthened. Don't believe all the BS they tell you!!! Nissan upgraded the frame as so many were snapping in half. If Mercedes were not willing to spend $1 or $2 more for a different key, do you seriously think they would spend money unless it was REQUIRED?

    I’ve got to say, that while I like the X Class, personally if I was buying one it would be the VW Amarok (already available with the 3.0 V6). The Amarok was designed from the ground up as a premium product and not ‘adapted’. Having said that let’s wait for the 6 cylinder version and judge that. And for those waiting for an AMG, it likely won’t happen, the chasis probably won’t be able to take it. If anything there will be an AMG-lite diesel.

      There's a V6 diesel version of this to come. This will have far more Mercedes content and hopefully full-time 4wd. However, unless they discount these existing models very heavily to be about the same price as the Ranger at most, they are dead in the water in my opinion.

    Mr AGM has made some good points here. However one could not justify double the price for a Mercedes the badge on the model that shares the same engine and chassis. I live in Thailand and this would have import tax of 200% so make it about six times more expensive than the Nissan Navara, Toyota Hilux, Mazda BT50, Ford Ranger that are all built in Thailand.
