I just acquired the Meng F-18G Growler kit - will certainly have most or all of the same issues. Thanks for the fine review and heads-up. I'm saving this video for review when I get started on my build.
Been following the vids and SCU cast… not that it’s worth much, but all of the blood, sweat and swearing has created IMHO one of the most stunning aircraft I’ve seen for a long time!
Great hornet. I always enjoy your build videos. You actually build the thing. Much better than the typical “here’s the sprue, it should build nice” videos. I think the dude at Primedmodelworks is Sean not Jason. If I have that wrong I apologize.
Really excellent build. I’m having nothing but trouble with my Meng kit. Horrible gaps and what I think is an F14 canopy came with mine. Fortunately I emailed Meng and they’re sending the correct one free. Obviously I have to wait until it arrives from China.
Hey Will Love ya channel and the bug.. just wanted to say massive fan boy no video is too long🤣 full of amazing techniques and invaluable knowledge, good luck at the nationals safe trip and I hope you get to meet up with Dave, Ian and Julian from the On The Bench podcast here in Australia. Just discovered you have a podcast also from watching this and can't wait to start listening to it.. all the best and can't wait for the next edition to your channel.. much love also👍
Hi Will, really great finish on the model. Having looked at a few of your earlier videos, I'm guessing that the finish is oils based but it would be really great to see how you achieved that washed out dusty look. All the very best with your competition, in Omaha? The state is in my head right now because I'm reading a book called ''Sand and Steel'' (probably the most comprehensive and readable book about D-Day you'll ever want to read) and the Omaha landing is just about to happen.
Nice work, those exhaust nozzles are really amazing. Good luck taking the dirty bird to IPMS Nationals, do we get another travelogue? Maybe less alley stops though >.>
This is exactly the way the Naval aircraft would look when they would ferry them from the coast before a hurricane to Wright Patterson AFB when my dad was stationed there in the early 80s. parked next to USAF F-16s it looked like the falcons just taxied through a car wash, just back from a spa day compared to the Navy aircraft that looked like they just played in a muddy thanksgiving day backyard football game...... the unpampered life of Navy and Marine aircraft.
38:00 And that's one of my criticism towards some aftermarket manufacturers. Aires, leaving their 'doesn't fit' reputation aside, the details and how they pop and can hold a wash they have it nailed down. Eduard, their details look good but still feel shallow or not pop enough for it to stand out from a few layers of paint. And Res-kit they do awesome sets with 3-dimensional details specially their exhaust and their afterburner rings whereas the former two most of their older sets only provide flat PE or resin. My criticism is how they handle the cad to final product, like you said the details need to be exaggerated so they can be seen on a model, even at 1/48 some of their finer details can't stand to painting much less hold a wash, it's worse in 1/72 where some of their sets are simply rescaling of their bigger sisters with all the corresponding details getting even smaller and sometimes not even surviving the 3d print to priming to mold to resin process, you can barely see a hint that the those faint panel lines and rivets were there on the cad. I'm doing my own designs and printing them to fill the voids that AF doesn't and being a modeller, 3d designer and printer at the same time helps a lot to make something that is useful to a modeller and not just pretty for an isolated viewpoint. Many years ago, I remember with Kinetic's KFIR release and a simultaneous release of Isracast detail set for it. One of the criticism was towards the resin cockpit where everything looked washed out and flat even worse than the plastic parts. The isracast guys said their CADs files and design were to scale, and there was the problem. Again what looks in-scale and good on CAD doesn't translate well to a scale model kit.
I was planning to get this Meng kit but I might not now. Planning to do it of a fictional pilot (spoiler alert) he’s an ace by the end of the new movie. For Christmas I got a double kit of both his F-14, and F/A-18 in 1/72.
As soon as you mentioned the TPMS Will, one word popped into my head and, like on your judge's notes, that word was "weathering". You've spent months weathering the Hornet to your liking and you've created a somewhat unique aircraft, in "interesting" condition. Will you be permitted to, or would you even want to, display the plane alongside a "storyboard", explaining the special history of this particular aircraft. Are the judges going to understand the weathering, or even care about it, or will that be your first strike? If they follow that up with a strike for the "incorrect" markings, you're not in with much chance of a prize. As if to validate my concerns, for the next video after this one, RUclips is recommending Part IV of the IPMS saga, where you tell the sad story of the judging. Now 𝒚𝒐𝒖 know, and 𝒘𝒆 know, the story of your Hornet but are the judges going to take the time to undertand the concept? I can see you leaving the venue, feeling cheated and disappointed, which would be unfortunate and unfair. It could even alter your feelings towards this spectacular model. I was surprised, very surprised, when you revealed that you were going to enter the Hornet and I would certainly consider it to be well worthy of a rosette but I really don't think that will happen. I hope I'm wrong buddy, I really do - good luck !! 😁
Oh, I am under no illusions about winning any hardware. And I'm totally OK with that. I'm just doing it for the experience. The bottom line is my style does not work well at ipms events. That's OK. They have their paradigm but I still want to do it. But to address the specifics… Anything going on with the markings would fall under the heading of accuracy and that is absolutely not supposed to be judged. "Supposed to be" of course is a your mileage may vary kind of thing. As for the story, again… That is not supposed to be part of the judging. It is supposed to be entirely about execution.
@@barpfoto Ah well, I'll look forward to hearing what the judges say. At least you won't get a nasty surprise, if you're expecting the worst.😁 You never know, you might get different judges, who can appreciate the importance of weathering.
The painting and weathering is again so beautiful and its just look so awesome. Wish I can get to that level one day. Thanks for a review video!
Excellent stuff Will! Nice to see a heavily weathered Super Hornet. All your hard work and efforts with this kit definitely paid off.
I was in the middle of the latest a SCU episode and now you come along with the rest of the Super Hornet story. Excellent. Thanks.
Fantastic weathering , looks like its been on a carrier for years. Great channel.👍

Great model and video; I love the weathering; thanks for taking the time to explain in detail.
Phenomenal work Will
Thank you! Did I get your name wrong? I'm not sure but I just thought somebody told me it was Jason.
@@barpfoto lol. Yeah but no big deal. I go by Sean or Dumba$* depending on how well you know me;)
Thanks for sharing the methods and the insight. Love the result.
Will another great build, that one is impressive, like the detail on the bombs, nicely done.
Epic work Will, That's a fantastic end result.
GBU-54 actually employs GPS and laser guidance. You mentioned it's laser guided as opposed to GPS, but it actually employs both.

Great work, love these low viz Navy jets!
Nicely done. Bravo Zulu, Sir.
It's a great kit, I've built one F and 2 Growlers.

Outstanding craftsmanship about to start the G model thanks for the tips if its anywhere1/2 as good as yours I’ll be happy!
Superb work!
Wow, great work there

Bro, that is one beat to shit superbug. 😂😂
Will, I strongly object to the choice of music you edited this video with. Can't it be more in the Death/Doom Metal sort of music, please?
Now Will, the IPMS do realise that airframes do in fact age...and heaven forbid leak???
Great Built, awesome Weathering! But I don't like all this " What if , could be" Shit.....
