- TACKING CEILINGS - installing plasterboard over an old ceiling - How I do it by myself - DIY
Hi guys, another little demonstration video on how I go about tacking/over boarding ceilings when doing refurbishment work on domestic jobs. This is different to new build jobs.
I have years of plastering and boarding experience, I’ve found what works for me being a lone plasterer. If you’re new to this type of work I’d always recommend getting someone to help lift boards.
I hope you find this video useful, please feel free to ask any questions in the comments section!
The link for the Hilti screw gun and magazine are in the Amazon links below, in the power tools section!
See you all again soon

Awesome videos Ash! Certainly making any boarding feel like amateur hour but gladly seeing how it should and can be done! Look forward to seeing more tips and tricks from you, will gladly subscribe to your channel!
Thank you mate! Will be getting on with some filming again soon! Been so busy lately 😅
Enjoyed watching that pal and learnt something on the way too - good luck with the channel - and all the best for the future.
Thank you mate, glad you got something out of it! And all the beat to you too

We used to use a Hard-hat with Hobnail Studs fitted to the top .... Balance the 8' x 4's on our heads ... Jump up onto a hop-up with a handful of nails & a tackers-hammer (Machined Head) and a 'two-clout finish' for each of 4 nails to hold the board in place ..... Those were the days EH?? 👍🤠 .... Wish we'd had those guns back then ....
Mate, when I started out the guys I worked with tacked like that, and I HATED tacking back then! Lol
These guns are fantastic, game changer!
Thanks again for the comment
Ash
Great video, thanks. Why do you need to stager it again, sorry short memory bank? :)
Great tutorial! Is this the same process if the ceiling as been removed and it is just bare joists?
Also i see that you're plaster boarding the ceiling before the walls, is this standard and whats the reason for it?
Yes, same principle for exposed timbers ( except the obvious, no need to mark out chalk lines etc)
It’s always easier to do the ceiling 1st, it means you have more margin for error. So in this example I’m dot and dabbing the walls so I have 30mm tolerance, so if I messed up the ceiling cut by up to 30mm or the wall was running out, the wall board would cover it still. Also you have the opportunity to pack up the wall boards so that they are touching the ceiling. The less the gap the better
Hope I’ve explained that well enough
Thanks again
Ash
@@AshThePlasterer Ah okay I see, thanks!
Great video Ash. Do you alway use plasterboard screws? I take it they have to be coated to stop going rusty.
Hi David! Thank you mate.
Yes, these are Dewalt screws, coated in black phosphate which is very anti corrosive and has good adhesion properties. Stainless steel screws ara also a good option!
Hope this helps, and thank you for watching
Ash
Good vid ( k.i.s) keep it simple 😜
Thanks joe! And thanks for watching mate
Ash
By just tapping a screw driver up you don't know if its the centre of the joist it could be right on the edge thus the next board won't catch it you need to break out the ceiling a tiny bit to see the joist and find the centre, old houses can catch you out
If you were a beginner that would be an option, or better still make three holes, one either side of the joists then one to check you have centre. No real need to break up the ceiling. Thanks for watching mate
Ash
@AshThePlasterer just a small hole each joist to be sure but hey we all have are own ways
Bent timber can catch you out, I always put a screw either side of the line just to make sure you catch the joist.
I never screw the end of board until the next board is butted up to it. I would never put 9.5 on a ceiling.
@@oldskool4130 9.5 boards are much better for the situation of wonky timber imo. They’re not as rigid as 12.5 or 15 so always a better option for overboarding, I would not use them on bare joists. 12.5 for 400 centres and 15’s for 600 centres
Each to their own and all that 😁
@@AshThePlasterer Fair play. Your a good boarder but I can see your a top spread. All the best
Do u think it might be possible to locate the joists with a thermal camera, theres got to be a slight difference in temp where the joists run.
Mmm yes maybe, sounds a little too technical for me 😅 worth looking into! Thanks for the comment mate, much appreciated
Ash
P r o m o s m ☹️
