PLASTERING A 1960’s HOUSE- Tacking, Dot & Dab and Skimming (refurbishment)

Hi all, Welcome to another video. This was filmed around the Christmas period where I wasn’t really sure what day of the week it was 😅 I really enjoy these type of jobs where i get to do a bit of everything. I started upstairs where i had exposed bricks and blocks to stick to and an overboard of the ceiling. Downstairs was slightly different with a bit of overskim and bonding. Hope you all enjo...

TACKING CEILINGS - installing plasterboard over an old ceiling - How I do it by myself - DIY Hi guys, another little demonstration video on how I go about tacking/over boarding ceilings when doing refurbishment work on domestic jobs. This is different to new build jobs. I have years of plastering and boarding experience, I’ve found what works for me being a lone plasterer. If you’re new to this...
Plastering a summer room ☀️ - In winter 🥶 skimming on sound block plaster boards (a long day!!)

Hi again guys, and welcome to this little vlog on a job I had before Christmas. I had a few little fiddly bits of tacking to do before I could crack on with the skimming in the little summer room/garden office. Over the years blue sound block plasterboards have usually dried fairly quick, not this time 😅 The cooler wether made the sets last slightly longer than usual, at around 3 1/2 to 4 hours...

    Hi Ash, is plastering something you can reliably do on your own for a long time or do you need to work in a team?

    • @AshThePlasterer
      @AshThePlasterer Час назад

      That all depends on what jobs you take on. I mainly have smaller domestic work which is fine alone. I sometimes take on larger projects that I have some friends come and help me with, but for sure you can keep going alone if you wish, it’s a bit of a harder graft so maybe not forever for me

    Great video, mate. Will definitely be using some of the techniques you've explained here in a forthcoming bathroom project. Quick question: do you need to put PVA on blocks if you are dotting and dabbing onto blockwork instead of bricks? Cheers.

      Hi mate! Thank you!! If they are new blocks you won’t need to. If they’ve previously had plaster on them and then stripped back I would then. It’s just to remove the dust really so that the adhesive has something to key into Hope this helps and good luck with the bathroom project Ash

    Great video. I'm having problems keeping the reveals square and equal thickness of skim. Its lovely and flat but the skim is 3mm thick along the bead but near the window frame its only 1-2mm. Must be putting too much pressure on the trowel near the frame when going up and down, but I find it hard to work out the angle of the trowel to keep it square with the wall, if that makes sense.

    • @AshThePlasterer
      @AshThePlasterer Месяц назад

      I think I know what you mean mate. A couple of mm shouldn’t really show too much tho so I’d just concentrate on making by the line down the window frame nice n straight and sharp 👌🏼

    I have always wondered the reason for dot and dabbing plasterboard for exterior or brick walls. Would it not just be easier and more durable to plaster it. I can understand with interior stud drywalls but why on bricks or breeze blocks. Why not plaster it straight because the plasterboards still need skim of plaster before sealing and paining don't they?

    • @AshThePlasterer
      @AshThePlasterer Месяц назад

      Hi mate. It’s probably more preferable these days as it’s much quicker and cheaper. I could dot and dab and skim this size room in a day if I wanted to. If you were wet plastering in sand and cement it would need to set overnight before skimming and much more labour heavy. Also drying time before painting. Skimmed plasterboards can be painted up to a week quicker than floated walls. But I agree regarding the durability, not as solid as a floated wall. All depends on what the customer wants really

    •  Месяц назад

      Thanks for your explanation mate. So I take it you can't plaster using multifinish straight to bricks and breeze blocks without wet plastering with sand and cement first? Also why do some people build frame on brick wall and then nail the boards rather than dot and dab when this does the same job with less work and materials?

    • @AshThePlasterer
      @AshThePlasterer Месяц назад

      No, multifinish is only designed to be a few millimetres thick, it would badly crack if you were to use it straight on the blocks. Its would also cost a fortune 😅 I’m guessing people who build a frame on the wall with wood aren’t confident to get a flat job with dot and dab, again personal preferencec really. You’re welcome mate, hope it helps Ash

      Cheap trowel wear it in on bit of sand & cement work... or just rub it down on the concrete floor...after a bit of patience you will get there. A new blade on a marshmalltown is a pig until it broken in. Rust on the blade will hold the finish lovely. Just clean it before ya skimming (finishing) The Drill, brush, buckets in video yes are cheap as chips but great for an apprentice or DIY. brushes used on rough coat & stick don't last anuway The biggest issue with plasterers and the trade in general it's become a pissing contest Been on the trowel for a very long time... We need more exposure to show the level of skills required. Not I can earn 5k a week or crack 150m float & set a day solo Their are very few channels worthy of a subscription..this fella is one of them 👍

    There's a lot of snobbery over cheap tools in the trade as spreads nowadays seem to be on a 'Race-To-The-Top' of the AMOUNT of tools they buy and the Expense of the tools they buy - NEVER has there been such an ENORMOUS amount of Unnecessary Expense££££'s spent on unnecessary tools as these days ..... We had a tool-bag not a lot bigger than a brief case for 'ALL' of our hand-tools back in the day ... And believe Me - The standard was HIGH! .... Whenever I started a new Labourer/Improver/Future Plasterer, I would kit them out with a basic tool set similar to the one you've bought - No Drill of course - Never any electric (or toilets) on sites back then ..... I would break the cheapie trowel in for a few weeks for them and they were ready to go ..... No stainless steel either (Thank Goodness) .... A steel float/trowel rusts into a really sharp blade in quick time - Just what you need for a brilliant finish - Stainless Steel never gives the same finish, even though most spreads love them, they don't compete! ..... Whoever gets your little set can still leave a decent job to rival 'anyone' - If they have the talent 🤠

    • @AshThePlasterer
      @AshThePlasterer 2 месяца назад

      Indeed mate! To be honest I’ve tried all the trowels out there, but these days I’ve just stuck with my old faithful marshaltown 14 inch for everything. I went through a phase of using the flex trowels but they ride bumps too easily and can leave a wavy finish. I was really surprised how this came out! It didn’t look a masterpiece once it was dry but after getting that 1 mist coast of paint over it, you’d never know the difference. Granted, it wasn’t as easy but it was still doable!! Thanks for the watch and comment mate Ash

    Hi Ash, just came across your channel and subscribed. Lots of plasterers on RUclips, But you do explain things really well and I’m hoping to learn a lot from you. So I have a question. I have started working with a plasterer recently and he absolutely insists that I put on both coats with the same mix. Being still quite new to the game I’m just not as fast as a seasoned spread. I’m putting on two average sized walls at a time, so by the time I put on my second coat (with the same mix) the plaster has stiffened up quite a bit and it just makes my job that much harder. But the guy I’m working with insists on this and the two seperate mix method apparently isn’t the proper way it should be done. What are your thoughts on this? And my second question is what kind of speed do I need to be at and how long does it take to be up to speed if I was plastering every other day? I look forward to your response and insight. Bee

    • @AshThePlasterer
      @AshThePlasterer 3 месяца назад

      Hi Bee! Thanks so much, appreciate the support. Well to be honest it’s all about personal preference. For me it all depends on the size of the hit I have on. For example a 30m set would need around 3 bags, mixing all at once and using it all wouldn’t be possible so it do two bags, flatten that off and then use the 3rd bag to lay it in. However with a bag or two it’s fine to use the same mix for both coats. If it’s stiffened up a little then just water its down slightly for the laying in coat. Hope that makes sense Regarding how fast you need to be, I’d just concentrate on neatness 1st and the speed will come with time. Hopefully your boss will be understanding that it’s not all going to come together overnight and it will take time. If you’re working on site, your speed will soon improve. It’s not the best working environment but it does give you valuable experience. Hope this helps a little, and best of luck Ash

      @@AshThePlasterer thank you for the valuable advise Ash. So would adding water when the plaster starts stiffening up accelerate the setting time of of the plaster? So for example I’ve mixed up enough for two coats, I put on my first coat, then when it comes to my second coat I add a little clean water and give it a mix with the whisk. Would that accelerate the speed of the setting time? Cause I actually tried doing that at work to soften the plaster up a bit for my second coat and my boss told me it will increase how quickly the plaster sets. I don’t really believe him as he’ll tell a fib here and there just so he can get his way. I can’t ask him anything, all he’s concerned about is getting the job done.

      @@bee8583 it wouldn’t accelerate it as such but it will still be going off, it will simply make that much easier to use, making the application easier for you

      @@AshThePlasterer thank you mate, I knew my boss was telling me fibs. And by the way I loved your dry lining video and those tips, I’m putting them into action on my next boarding job.

      @@AshThePlasterer thank you for the clarity Ash. I do have another question, so im bonding out a room tomorrow, and again unlike all other plasterers my boss insists that bonding is only one coat, no levelling with a straight edge, but I have to trowel it out to get it flat just like we do when skimming, and add a flick and water here and there to soften it up wherever required. Does that sound right to you and you familiar with the process? Cheers

    It's easy to stick a wall with flat boards and no pipes. Don't try this with bent boards. Should of staggered the long straight joint.

    Thanks for the socket measurement trick. How come no insulation behind the boards? How do you do insulated boards too? I'm still learning! Would like too see window reveals done aswell. Cheers m8.

      The house has cavity wall insulation, also this was an internal wall so no need, unless the customer requests it. Insulation boards are stuck the same way as this, they need to be stored really flat though as they can bend and it’s near on impossible to straighten them, they’re also very expensive! A few others have also asked about window reveals, may well get a video sorted for that soon Hope this helps mate Ash

      Thanks one last question. I've got a old internal lath and plaster stud wall... Removed all the lath and plaster... Can I use insulation roll and then then board it, or just board..? Worried about it sweating. Thanks

      @@Hew.Jarsol yes, board one side, insulate it, then board the other side. If it’s an internal wall you won’t need to worry about moisture Hope this helps
