Ppl also sleep on the fact that even though these artists never saw “mainstream” success..they made a living off of rap. If no one heard of me and I made $100k+ rapping that’s still success versus a regular job.
Roc's album, "Behold, A Dark Horse," is one of the greatest projects I've ever heard. Phonte sings, raps, produces. Literally the most underrated guy in the game.
Roc Marci my favourite current MC. Reloaded is a classic -- Rosebudd's Revenge, Elephant Man's Bones and Marcielago some of the best rap albums of the last few years (and the project he produced for Stove God is tight as well).
Subbed bro. I assumed without looking you had tens of thousands already with how polished the presentation was. Roc is in my Pantheon of rap Gods, and Little Brother got me through some shit!
Masta Ace is a real good one. Him and Eminem. People like Phonte and Ace, I like that Drake and Em highlighted their influence - they weren't biting, you can hear the influence, but it's not copycatting. I think more rappers were influenced by underground artists like this but simply don't say! I like that Drake and Em highlighted where they come from, it's how I heard about Ace and Phonte, and I'm sure it's how many others discovered those artists too
Totally agree! Masta Ace and Phonte’s influence runs deep. It’s refreshing when artists like Drake and Eminem openly acknowledge their inspirations rather than pretending they created everything from scratch. It gives those legends the flowers they deserve while also educating a new generation of listeners. Their influence is undeniable, but it’s always good to see that respect put on their name for paving the way!💯
I first heard Drake on a Little Brother song featuring Dwele. That's only one of 3 songs I like from Drake. Little Brother is in my top 5 rap groups of all time.
Tyler didn't achieve massive success til later in his career??? When Odd Future hit the scene that shit was an international phenomenon instantly! Also: You forgot about KA. Can't say Roc without KA.
Little brother was on drakes first album before young money. Ppl need to put respect on drakes name too. He was on the underground in Toronto for years and did a lot of music with underground artist and producers in Canada
A indústria simplesmente escolhe quem ela quer…. Phonte é um ótimo liricista é um ótimo produtor… mas a cultura reconhece sua extrema importância pro cenário musical….
I'm pretty certain Phonte used to write for Drake. At least "collaborated" on songs. While there's no concrete proof of this, Drake has changed his sound, cadence, writing style, erc. too much throughout the years that I believe that he had a team creating songs for him since the beginning. Phonte is truly underated these days too. Hope that changes.
Dope video bro. When we talk about Hip-Hop pioneers, there are so many unsung heros consistently being left off the list. And to amswer your question, in my opinion, influence is always more important than popularity. Niggas from the UK, India, Mexico, Canada, etc. STILL tryna rap like Project Pat ... can we say the same some of the the consensus titans like Jay Z? Not in my opinion
Listen to what Eve said in her current interview with the breakfast club. You don’t wanna dive deep into this industry that cares less about your mental health.
Elzhi should also be credited for Draks style because Phonte was inspired by Slum Village. Also Common created an Album like TPAB by Kendrick his is Like water for chocolate and the big 3 sound like him as well to me.
This is really interesting... A while ago i stumbled onto the instrumental of The Answer by The Foreign Exhange, off the Connected album. (I literally heard it in the background of a random video, the beat was just that fire i had to find out what it was) After that i decided to give the album a listen. But whilst listening, my first impression of Phonte was that he sounded like Drake! My dumbass actually thought "drake must've influenced this guy!". Come to find out its the other way around... But the similarity is really something... The cadence, flow, the ability to be vulnerable as a rapper, particularly back then... Early drake is dripping with Phonte influence... I would really reccomend giving that Connected album a listen though. The Answer and Let's Move are great, that whole album is really enjoyable. The instrumentation is special too... it reminds me of the halcyon days of adolescence...
That’s wild! It’s crazy how that connection hits you after hearing them both. Phonte’s influence on early Drake is so strong that it’s easy to think it was the other way around at first.
@@hiphopbakery Ikr! I deadass had to do a double take at first to make sure it wasn't drake! 😅 Great video though man, great to see someone adding fresh ideas to the discourse ✌️
Connected is a classic….Phonte’s delivery over Nicolay’s soulful production is crazy. That album has some of Phonte’s hardest verses. I keep it in reg rotation. Shout out to this RUclips channel for shedding some light on both of these incredible emcees.
Phonte didn't inspire the clown known as Drake. Drake stole from Phonte...so did Kanye.. Little Brother started the college talk rap first...then Kanye came to North Carolina and stole their whole movement...
@pauldyer5795 RUclips Camp lo Feelin it. Lol. RUclips what their Producer Ski said. I'm not saying he exactly took their style, I'm saying he was heavily influenced with it when he moved into that Jiggy Jigga era. He wasn't rapping like that before or after but he made his mark with an adaptation of their style

Roc Marci my favourite current MC. Reloaded is a classic -- Rosebudd's Revenge, Elephant Man's Bones and Marcielago some of the best rap albums of the last few years (and the project he produced for Stove God is tight as well).
Yea he’s definitely ahead of his time and super underrated 💯. I’ve got to check out that Stove God project.
Very understated statement
Subbed bro. I assumed without looking you had tens of thousands already with how polished the presentation was. Roc is in my Pantheon of rap Gods, and Little Brother got me through some shit!

You make a great point! 💯Elzhi and Slum Village definitely had a huge impact, and Phonte’s connection to that Detroit sound can’t be overlooked.

What about Soulja Boy 🤔
Green house effect. Company flow. Company Flow are the spearheads.
