When you paused it to ask each other what you thought the machine might be, it took you a few seconds but you both got it pretty quick. Take the time to let the lyrics sink in, and then look at the song names and do some lyric research on the entire "Animals" album that followed this one. these kids and the whole genre of 'reacting to classic rock' is just so adorably innocent. I remember being a middle class suburban white kid and then I hit college and got experienced … not necessarily stoned … but beautiful.
Pink Floyd are an albums band . They explore themes & concepts over entire albums so you will get more understanding and enjoyment if u can take the time to listen that way . It is well worth the effort .
It's definitely one of my favorites. A go to album when I need a Floyd fix. It's always been a thinking man's/ woman's band. Rush embodies a similar intellectual appeal and appreciation.

Okay cool, so I was right that it was about someone he knows. :) But yeah my friend who is a fan of the band told me its about the Music Industry. Which makes sense of course. But Since he spoke about the Pipeline and what not I thought it was about someone giving up on their dream and getting a normal job and being the casual well behaved citizen that society tries to force us into. Excellent video. The machine is the music industry. This was the first record they wrote after the massive success of Dark Side had catapulted them to world wide success and huge stadium tours. So some of Wish You Were Here reflects their experience of now being in the depths, and in a way consumed by the machine.
I recommend that y'all should look up about Pink Floyd and their history because it's actually really interesting but also very tragic. Pink Floyd used to be a psychedelic jam band that would perform at clubs like U.F.O. This was during a time where psychedelic use was prominent and bands like Pink Floyd were the ones that would play for the psychedelic lovers. Their main guitarist at the time and lead singer was Syd Barret but after some time being with them he slowly started to deteriorate mentally due to his excessive use of LSD but many believed he already had Schizophrenia and the acid only exacerbated his illness. He soon left the band and was replaced by David Gilmour. Most of the songs and albums after that were about him and the music industry that took advantage of him and his band as well as some issues in our society such as conformity and the oppression of free thinking. Syd Barret was honestly the heart and core of who Pink Floyd was and I actually recommend checking out some of his stuff during that era. He's made some really trippy and psychedelic songs but I wouldn't check him out just yet before checking out some of other pink floyd songs and albums because the Syd Barret era is very different than what you're hearing now.

Syd Barret, Pink Floyd's original lead vocalist, is the guy the song is about. The album is about how the recording industry treats the artists, with particular reference to Mr Barret, who had a breakdown under the pressure. Shine on You Crazy Diamond is also about Syd Barret.

The “ machine “ represents the world and how you become a working part of it. You are just another working part. The song says you didn’t like school but wait until you get pushed out into the real world. You realize how hard life is and if you let it absorb you you feel that you become an insignificant speck in the big picture of life.
There is a common theme through out Pink Floyd's albums. Rodger Waters who wrote the songs,, Was signing about two people.. First his father who was killed during WWII and Syd Barett, who along with Rodger started Pink Floyd.. He ended up taking too much LSD and literally broke his mind. So the lyrics about the steak and the Jaguar are referring to Syd. The guy laying on the hood of the Jag is Syd before he went crazy,.
HAVE A CIGAR!! One of my personal favorites is 'The gold it's in the...' - those are easy listening short songs. I know you said you a lot of times don't have time for long songs, however, I believe any floyd fan here would agree that Animals is an absolute masterpiece, probably better than DSOTM. IF you really want to understand the band and how they viewed the world and take a deep dive, listen to Animals, the album. In my opinion that is the album which MUST be listened to as a whole. What I love about this song and "Have A Cigar" is that they feel so ahead of the curve, to have songs that so explicitly use lyrics to shine a light on how the music industry chews up and spits out young artists, fatcats preying on the naive to line their own pockets. Have A Cigar is sleazy and bluesy sounding, but this is so cold and artificial it's chilling.
Specifically, most of Pink Floyd's earlier songs were written about Sid Barrett (hence the pics in the video). I won't go into alot of details, you can reference the story of Pink Floyd's beginning for a reliable source if you like. Sid was the "machine" from the start as a song writer for the band, but unfortunately he had serious issues with psychedelic drug use and schizophrenia. The band dismissed him because he became more and more unreliable due to his drug use and other issues. So many of Pink Floyd's songs are about Sid's experience. A lot of Floyd songs might sound as if they have an unusual start and finish but this is often because the song then goes into the following track. For Example on the 'Wish You Were Here album' the 3rd song 'Have A Cigar' ends with the sound of the song sounding like its on a radio and is then tuned out as if searching for another track until it becomes the intro to the album's 4th song the classic 'Wish You Were Here'
Just to help you guys out on the lyrics, this song (and pretty much the entire album) is about former band member Syd Barrett, who couldn't cope with the stress of fame and the mechanical nature of the music industry (commercial music production). As a result, he fell into drug addiction and mental illness. He became impossible to work with and the band was forced to dump him.
That's an interesting second choince of Floyd to go right after Echoes. Two worlds apart really. I would suggest you to try the entire Shine On You Crazy Diamond suite from this very same album, if you want to go into another 20 minute trip. I suppose you already know the short and sweet song that titles the album, Wish You Were Here, as it's a timeless anthem most people have heard even if they don't know who it's by; if you don't though, it's a must. Then again, you'll have a hard time choosing a Floyd song and choosing poorly. Enjoy the ride!
Once you start listening to Pink Floyd you’re going to be hooked, not to mention your views will increase quite a bit. I myself enjoy going through RUclips videos of people discovering the Floyd for the first time. Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Animals are three full albums you should do, but in one sitting each. You’re going to think that’s a long time, but it’ll go by before you know it. Songs from Wish You Were Here and Meddle. With Pink Floyd you have a ton of material to go through. Hope to see more Floyd.
Great reactions! Pink Floyd is an amazing band, ahead of their time...which probably hasn't even come yet! Wish You Were Here was a tribute / mourning for their bandmate Sid, who mentally broke down and had to leave the band. It should be listened to as a whole but at least one complete side at at time Same with the albums Dark Side of the Moon, and Animals.
If you guys haven't already, look into pink floyd's history; emphasis Sid Barrett. There are plenty of documentaries on youtube about it. There is an ongoing lament in their music for Sid, the cost of the drugs/rock and roll lifestyle, and having to move on without him; "And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon." Hard to pick single songs to recommend, shine on you crazy diamond for sure. The Wall and The Dark Side of the Moon are both fantastic in their entirety, great for discovering pink floyd. The Wall movie is great too, especially for visualising the story (adult themes/content.) Keep up the good work you guys.

Its hard to appreciate the meaning of their songs without listening to their album in one go because its out of context. I would suggest just doing a quick wiki search on the song your going to do to get some context on it. I highly recommend Dogs if you want your face melted by amazing solos
Definitely check out Pigs by Pink Floyd - it’s one of their harder rocking ones. Can also recommend Dogs, Sheep as well - any song from Animals can stand on its own without necessarily needing the rest of the album for context, which can be a bit of a hindrance when checking out individual Floyd songs (especially with The Wall which is a story album from front to back). Songs like Comfortably Numb take on a completely different meaning once you understand it’s place in the story the album tells, but as individual tracks on their own they can be slightly confusing lyrically & musically
If you really want your mind blown, my suggestion is the song several species of small furry animals gathering together in a cave and grooving with a pict. Off the Ummagumma album.

If y'all like really experimental and psychedelic music like this I recommend that you two should check out the songs Pharaohs Dance or Bitches Brew by Miles Davis. It's jazz so it's completely different then these songs but when it comes to psychedelia it's everything you would want. I usually don't like jazz but this is an exception at least for me.

The next song on that album following "Welcome to the Machine" is called "Have a Cigar" which is very funky in comparison but a great tune none the less you'll both likely enjoy it too. If you're looking for something more longer then "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" from the same album is another great song.

Themes and songs on each album flow in to each other and you would be doing a great disservice to yourself if you listened to songs individually. The album this is from, "Wish You Were Here", is largely inspired by founding member and main creative force Syd Barrett, who left the band after their second album , becoming increasingly mentally unstable. The reasons for that are somewhat complicated, including drug use and latent mental illness. But this track specifically addresses the deleterious effects that the pressures of the music industry and pop stardom had on him. Other tracks on the album are more like the band's tributes to him, mourning the loss of their friend and creative partner. Look up the story of Syd showing up at the studio during the recording of this album. It's almost unbelievable and heartbreakingly sad. That sense of melancholy, sadness and loss are really at the emotional center of this album.
Good reaction! My suggestion for next would be "Time". It's a little more straightforward than a lot of their stuff, both musically and lyrically. I'd also recommend "Comfortably Numb", even if it's just for the lead guitar work. When guitar magazines have polls for the greatest lead guitar songs of all time, it usually makes the top ten. As others have said, PF made albums much more than they made individual songs, and most of their stuff is even better in the context of the entire album. Which is a pretty big commitment, sitting down to listen to an entire album start to finish. "The Wall" is a double length album that tells a story, and lyrically, "Comfortably Numb" is a little hard to get when it's removed from that context. But musically, it's still awesome.

Yes you can listen to one song at a time, but you will not get the full effect of the concept of it. I agree with Scott Crosby, you really need to listen to Shine on you crazy diamond. GREAT SONG. Very long intro to it, but well worth it. It will make you reflect on your life.
You can't listen to classic rock through little earbud speakers...you need the music to fill the room around you. You need to feel it in your chest and the souls of your feet. Not to mention that those little speakers can't even begin to reproduce the sounds of multi-track stereophonics as this music was recorded, and intended to be heard.
The Machine, in my mind is life, from the lowliest ditch digger to President of the US, we are all Money generators. And every Machine needs a generator.
Listen to the advice you will get from the many Floyd fans. Many have been listening to this band for over fifty years an a lot of them will tell you to listen to entire albums, not single songs. They are right.

65 yo and I'm from Louisiana also, Mandeville to be exact. Suggestion: get some headphones, not that Beats crap, when listening to music from back in the day. You'll grow an appreciation for the way the music was mixed to fully take advantage of STEREO. Try anything from the first 2 Black Sabbath albums "Black Sabbath" & "Paranoid", classics from the very first metal band. My faves for starters are "Fairies Wear Boots" and "War Pigs". Enjoy exploring the next rabbit hole. Geaux Tigahs/Who Dat.

Actually there is a third Pink Floyd after Waters left in 1984. There is just Gilmour, Mason and Wright on 1987 and 1994 albums.

This was my fave song for years. Then Street Spirit by Radiohead, Lawrence by Camel and now Echoes (Studio) by Floyd.
The “ machine “ represents the world and how you become a working part of it. You are just another working part. The song says you didn’t like school but wait until you get pushed out into the real world. You realize how hard life is and if you let it absorb you you feel that you become an insignificant speck in the big picture of life.
There is a common theme through out Pink Floyd's albums. Rodger Waters who wrote the songs,, Was signing about two people.. First his father who was killed during WWII and Syd Barett, who along with Rodger started Pink Floyd.. He ended up taking too much LSD and literally broke his mind. So the lyrics about the steak and the Jaguar are referring to Syd. The guy laying on the hood of the Jag is Syd before he went crazy,.

One of my personal favorites is 'The gold it's in the...' - those are easy listening short songs.
I know you said you a lot of times don't have time for long songs, however, I believe any floyd fan here would agree that Animals is an absolute masterpiece, probably better than DSOTM. IF you really want to understand the band and how they viewed the world and take a deep dive, listen to Animals, the album. In my opinion that is the album which MUST be listened to as a whole. If you wanna go for the meat n potatoes of why they are so iconic, but with short songs, pick just about anything off of DSOTM , yes DSOTM is a concept album that is most definitely best enjoyed when listen to start to finish, but it has more tracks that are shorter than Animals does

@@soundcreeps5371 DSOTM was the album getting all the airplay in my youth. That's when I went down that rabbit hole. And worked my way backwards finding everything I could on this group. Before internet, that was not easy. Still a big fan.

What I love about this song and "Have A Cigar" is that they feel so ahead of the curve, to have songs that so explicitly use lyrics to shine a light on how the music industry chews up and spits out young artists, fatcats preying on the naive to line their own pockets.
Have A Cigar is sleazy and bluesy sounding, but this is so cold and artificial it's chilling.

Specifically, most of Pink Floyd's earlier songs were written about Sid Barrett (hence the pics in the video). I won't go into alot of details, you can reference the story of Pink Floyd's beginning for a reliable source if you like. Sid was the "machine" from the start as a song writer for the band, but unfortunately he had serious issues with psychedelic drug use and schizophrenia. The band dismissed him because he became more and more unreliable due to his drug use and other issues. So many of Pink Floyd's songs are about Sid's experience. A lot of Floyd songs might sound as if they have an unusual start and finish but this is often because the song then goes into the following track. For Example on the 'Wish You Were Here album' the 3rd song 'Have A Cigar' ends with the sound of the song sounding like its on a radio and is then tuned out as if searching for another track until it becomes the intro to the album's 4th song the classic 'Wish You Were Here'

Just to help you guys out on the lyrics, this song (and pretty much the entire album) is about former band member Syd Barrett, who couldn't cope with the stress of fame and the mechanical nature of the music industry (commercial music production). As a result, he fell into drug addiction and mental illness. He became impossible to work with and the band was forced to dump him.
That's an interesting second choince of Floyd to go right after Echoes. Two worlds apart really. I would suggest you to try the entire Shine On You Crazy Diamond suite from this very same album, if you want to go into another 20 minute trip. I suppose you already know the short and sweet song that titles the album, Wish You Were Here, as it's a timeless anthem most people have heard even if they don't know who it's by; if you don't though, it's a must. Then again, you'll have a hard time choosing a Floyd song and choosing poorly. Enjoy the ride!

Once you start listening to Pink Floyd you’re going to be hooked, not to mention your views will increase quite a bit. I myself enjoy going through RUclips videos of people discovering the Floyd for the first time. Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Animals are three full albums you should do, but in one sitting each. You’re going to think that’s a long time, but it’ll go by before you know it. Songs from Wish You Were Here and Meddle. With Pink Floyd you have a ton of material to go through. Hope to see more Floyd.

Wish You Were Here was a tribute / mourning for their bandmate Sid, who mentally broke down and had to leave the band. It should be listened to as a whole but at least one complete side at at time Same with the albums Dark Side of the Moon, and Animals.
My 16 and 20 years olds could recognize this song in 2 seconds since they wėre 2years old!!
If you guys haven't already, look into pink floyd's history; emphasis Sid Barrett. There are plenty of documentaries on youtube about it. There is an ongoing lament in their music for Sid, the cost of the drugs/rock and roll lifestyle, and having to move on without him; "And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon."
Hard to pick single songs to recommend, shine on you crazy diamond for sure. The Wall and The Dark Side of the Moon are both fantastic in their entirety, great for discovering pink floyd. The Wall movie is great too, especially for visualising the story (adult themes/content.)

Pink Floyd are all about album concepts. Its hard to appreciate the meaning of their songs without listening to their album in one go because its out of context. I would suggest just doing a quick wiki search on the song your going to do to get some context on it. I highly recommend Dogs if you want your face melted by amazing solos

Definitely check out Pigs by Pink Floyd - it’s one of their harder rocking ones. Can also recommend Dogs, Sheep as well - any song from Animals can stand on its own without necessarily needing the rest of the album for context, which can be a bit of a hindrance when checking out individual Floyd songs (especially with The Wall which is a story album from front to back). Songs like Comfortably Numb take on a completely different meaning once you understand it’s place in the story the album tells, but as individual tracks on their own they can be slightly confusing lyrically & musically
If you really want your mind blown, my suggestion is the song several species of small furry animals gathering together in a cave and grooving with a pict. Off the Ummagumma album.

If y'all like really experimental and psychedelic music like this I recommend that you two should check out the songs Pharaohs Dance or Bitches Brew by Miles Davis. It's jazz so it's completely different then these songs but when it comes to psychedelia it's everything you would want. I usually don't like jazz but this is an exception at least for me.

The next song on that album following "Welcome to the Machine" is called "Have a Cigar" which is very funky in comparison but a great tune none the less you'll both likely enjoy it too. If you're looking for something more longer then "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" from the same album is another great song.

I thought it was a space ship taking off when I first heard it. I was stoned at the time though. It was allowed I was about 19. I think I appreciate it more now.
New subscriber here and I gotta say that was a great reaction. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend you listen to each pink Floyd album in one sitting. Themes and songs on each album flow in to each other and you would be doing a great disservice to yourself if you listened to songs individually. Start with Dark Side Of The Moon, then Wish You Were Here, after that, Animals and finally, The Wall. All classics for a reason!

The album this is from, "Wish You Were Here", is largely inspired by founding member and main creative force Syd Barrett, who left the band after their second album , becoming increasingly mentally unstable. The reasons for that are somewhat complicated, including drug use and latent mental illness. But this track specifically addresses the deleterious effects that the pressures of the music industry and pop stardom had on him. Other tracks on the album are more like the band's tributes to him, mourning the loss of their friend and creative partner. Look up the story of Syd showing up at the studio during the recording of this album. It's almost unbelievable and heartbreakingly sad. That sense of melancholy, sadness and loss are really at the emotional center of this album.

Good reaction! My suggestion for next would be "Time". It's a little more straightforward than a lot of their stuff, both musically and lyrically. I'd also recommend "Comfortably Numb", even if it's just for the lead guitar work. When guitar magazines have polls for the greatest lead guitar songs of all time, it usually makes the top ten.
As others have said, PF made albums much more than they made individual songs, and most of their stuff is even better in the context of the entire album. Which is a pretty big commitment, sitting down to listen to an entire album start to finish. "The Wall" is a double length album that tells a story, and lyrically, "Comfortably Numb" is a little hard to get when it's removed from that context. But musically, it's still awesome.

Like most Floyd songs, it has more than one meaning. It's specifically about the music industry but it also speaks to the 'everyman', where it's about work and society in general. Most Floyd songs have both specific and general meanings.

Pink Floyd is one of those bands that are meant to be listened to by the whole album from start to finish. Yes you can listen to one song at a time, but you will not get the full effect of the concept of it. I agree with Scott Crosby, you really need to listen to Shine on you crazy diamond. GREAT SONG. Very long intro to it, but well worth it. It will make you reflect on your life.

You can't listen to classic rock through little earbud speakers...you need the music to fill the room around you. You need to feel it in your chest and the souls of your feet. Not to mention that those little speakers can't even begin to reproduce the sounds of multi-track stereophonics as this music was recorded, and intended to be heard.

Listen to the advice you will get from the many Floyd fans. Many have been listening to this band for over fifty years an a lot of them will tell you to listen to entire albums, not single songs. They are right.
Great reaction. Dogs is their best song in my opinion. It's a real trip. But look up what the song is about before going on this journey. And it's always good to have the lyrics up for your viewers to see.

Have to do the entirety of the Wall from start to finish. And have those lyrics up then try and find the story. Do some of the other songs first but don't touch the wall until later. Just my suggestion. Kinda like go by album release

Syd Barrett. That whole album is about him. Look him up. It brings that song and album into perspective. Also, i recommend "Childhood's End" off of Obscured by the Clouds album. Very underrated Pink Floyd in my book.

65 yo and I'm from Louisiana also, Mandeville to be exact. Suggestion: get some headphones, not that Beats crap, when listening to music from back in the day. You'll grow an appreciation for the way the music was mixed to fully take advantage of STEREO. Try anything from the first 2 Black Sabbath albums "Black Sabbath" & "Paranoid", classics from the very first metal band. My faves for starters are "Fairies Wear Boots" and "War Pigs". Enjoy exploring the next rabbit hole. Geaux Tigahs/Who Dat.
