ALMOST A MASTERPIECE: Watching Rainbows Pt. 2
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 сен 2022
- The chords and tempo of "Watching Rainbows" are identical to "I've Got a Feeling" but what resonates most is John Lennon's improvised lyrics reminding us to seize the day if we want change in our lives. It is an inspired, unfinished idea that for any other artist, would have been the starting point for something special and for the Beatles, could have been a masterpiece.

The Beatles were something that only happened once. I'm just happy that it happened in my lifetime.
I agree I met them in Paris in 1963 and saw their show in early 64 Paris Olympia now I still listen to their records
1964 - 1969 was a period of unprecented cultural, sociological, political and artistic change. It was a brief era that packed generations of change into just 6 years. And those 6 years coincided with the arrival and eventual demise of The Beatles. They set off a revolution and proceeded to be the main driver of that revolt for those 6 years. No musical entity in human history was so powerfully influential. All future historians who dive into the elements of that wild period in Western history will start with The Beatles. That's why its pointless to compare them to other bands. Those other bands were music acts. The Beatles were a revolution.
Became a Songwriter because, of the Beatles.. Heard a clip of Harrison talking about John, and Paul writing songs. He decided if, they could do it, then anyone could!!! To a brand new musician of 16, I absolutely believed him!! No hits but, I love Songwriting at age 70... Have sold a little less than a thousand copies... For me, that is golden!!
Love this.
Do you have anything out online? I'd love to get it a listen!
John Lennon said it himself that what the Beatles did should turn other people on to be creative themselves. I think there are a lot of dynamics to maintaining one's creative side as you age, but a record contract or book deal is not necessarily one of them...! I think you guys have got it right, we're all just adding to the great works of humanity whether writing a song, designing a dovetail joint or deciphering a dead sea scroll and the Beatles' collected works is a great jumping off point, whether redesigning one of their album covers or striving to attain that heady state in which their creativity was fostered!
McCartney must have tuned in to this - only 2 months ago? ruclips.net/video/g4UsXksoGNg/видео.html
Check out blank pages by Frank James and peacock alley by Damion angel 2 really fine albums
So we'll said man ,deeply thought through.
Yeah I like Adam Neely's idea of a citation system instead of music copyright. It would make things fairer and share the love around.
John was right.
Mick asked them how to write songs. Beatles tutored him and gave him a song to record. Turned Mick onto being VERY creative himself.
Stones turned on others and the beat goes on. John knew he was a link in a long evolving chain.
It's like hearing a new Beatles track for the first time in 30 years and it elicits pure joy. Thank you
Exactly! Thanks for watching!
Ditto!
My Mom passed away long time ago. She had cancer. For sure my Mom would love this song. She's probably been hanging out with John Lennon up there, and sang this song. I would try not to cry while listening to this song and I am smoking weed to help me.
There’s like a pleading kind of quality to Lennon’s delivery, in most of his songs, that I love
That’s what John’s singing always does. It tears at your heartstrings!
That is a very astute comment. Thanks.
Lennon's voice just has a way of getting into your soul that one does not see in many singers...
Obsessed? They were just four of the greatest showman they are thecstandard even today!!!
Man, you won't believe this... While I was hearing this song a hummingbird appeared at my home. And I've never seen one of them in my whole life around here. Christmas + Beatles magic, I guess. I love your channel.
Oh wow!
This recreation, interpretation of Watching Rainbow is so joyful to be listened! I am awed and impressed by how you guys could pull the unfinished song by taking it from bits of unfinished lyrics and jams and it's so amazing, you know! Also, You guys even add the additional track which make the number is very Beatlesque. It does make my day, I love it! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much!
Watching Rainbows is a masterpiece, fantastic, Beatles are number one, The Best in the World, John is a genius, what could have been, Forever
Please put this song onto a dvd or cd that we can play every day.Its magical just like the rooftop concert.Unbeatable.
Please speak to Sir Paul and release this song with the one that another band plays.
There are still millions of Beatle fans there and in a world where good songs are hard to come by this one is really a rainbow and
I think they should just leave it as it is it's a masterpiece in it's own way , just being buried in a soundtrack .. sure McCartney did I've got a feeling with the same chord but Lennon used that cord on Let it be I dig a pony... It's definitely universal!
Should
Great work.
It would be interesting to see Paul’s reaction to this video.
@PaulMcCartney I’m a big fan of chocolate cupcakes and @beatles
He would charge a couple millions for that
Yes what is Paul’s reaction to this?
@@terryworth7 don't let him know. He will probably sue for copyright
That would be cool
It’s so beautiful to watch a masterpiece ripple from 1969 to 2022.
Sounds like what eventually became, ‘I’ve Got a Feeling’, my all time favorite Beatles song
I was about to say the same thing.
That's exactly what it is.
Watching Rainbows is an early version of "I've Got A Feeling" but IMO the way these guys
A channel called "John Winston Lennon" used AI to put the Beatles' voices on this and it's perfect. Better than "I've Got A Feeling" even.
Wow. That was incredible. The sheer creativity involved in piecing those snippets of songs into something that shames the majority of modern artistes blows my tiny mind. I love the counterpoint vocals towards the end of the song, it's very much in keeping with the way the Fabs worked in their latter days and works tremendously well. Thank you for (re) creating this. Bravo!
Thanks for your insight! A treat to read.
I couldn't agree more. It's been a week since I first heard this gem reconstructed. It would perfectly have been one of their finest works.
@@ChatNoir-8867 Thank you. That is so nice of you to say.
They were working up a song. They came to a Y and it became I’ve Got A Feeling. You guys have backed up to the Y and took us down the other direction. Good job! I’m putting it in the Beatles library along side Free As a Bird and Real Love.
Excellent! Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for watching.
It can overlay I've Got a Feeling in terms of tempo and meter, but it is distinctly not I've Got a Feeling. It almost feels like the anti "I've got a feeling."
@@marcdb9974 or possibly a twin sibling.
Sisters from another mother
And by "Y", he means Yoko.
Great job! Could 100% see the lads passing this off to Badfinger. Would have been a hit!
Yep! I totally heard Badfinger in this brilliant version.
Man I so wish that had happened!
If this had been on Anthology we all would’ve SHIT‼️ A beautiful reimagining 👍
WATCHING RAINBOWS SOUNDS LIKE AN ALTERNATE VOCAL OTHER THAN BY THE BEATLES THEMSELVES.
As a 16 year old, i watched John, Paul, George and Pete in the lunchtime sessions in the Cavern.
Now at the young age of 79, I still get goosebumps hearing them. But to hear stuff like this is fantastic.
Keep up the great work guys, i love it.
WOW! Thanks for watching.
You’re a legend too
Why weren't there more songs recorded at the Cavern Club.?
@Garry-vd1dg because they weren't well known outside Liverpool at time. They were recorded for a Granada TV show in 1962 and I can't remember the name off hand. Only then was there name getting about. Unfortunately the Cavern wasn't big enough for the massively TV cameras back in the day, lol....if there were then I'm sure there would have been a lot more.

The Beatles, the gift that keeps on giving. Thanks for the priceless gift of a new Beatles song.
Thanks, Gary. Appreciate the kind words.
When I picked up the Black Album years ago. Watching Rainbows blew me away. I always thought this could of been polished up and released. I have combed thru all the AB Road tapes and tons of Get Back bootlegs and found so many hidden nuggets buried in these tapes. A treasure trove man. Take the time to listen to these.
The John Lennon album track I didn't know I needed today. Bless you for this great gift
Thanks, Nate!
Can’t believe what I just heard, brought a tear to my eye, just the same as when we lost Lennon.
Thanks, Jonny. So nice of you to say.

Thank you so much. Because of publishing issues, this will likely turn up as a mixtape or something other than Spotify. In a way, it makes it kinda cool, right? Like an old b-side.
It's fantastic. Thank you for the effort. I for one...appreciate it. 👍☀️👍(I bet even...Paul and Ringo like it).
I am shocked that there are 'naysayers'. This proves that there are ' musicians' and then..there are 'music - loving musicians'.
To be diving into streams of consciousness is what it is all about.
Anyone that has played The Beatles already knows that shivery feeling.
And this is great , puts the focus on music's gift to all of us.
Loved it.Well done and thank you !
Jeff Slate of the group The Badge wrote his version of Watching Rainbows on the Digital Retro album. It's very good. I really like what you've put together. I've always thought this was on.of John's best unfinished tracks.
Just heard The Badge version and it sucks sorry
I love this song!
This is sheer genius, how you've stiched a number of disparate bits of material into a new garment. You've elevated Watching Rainbows way above being a few off the cuff lyrics sung over I've Got a Feeling, into it's own thing altogether. Love it!
Thanks! Here’s the Beatles’ versions used for our medley of 'Watching Rainbows.'
ruclips.net/video/vgAnvRv0xEc/видео.html
From the beginning, I was hearing the main melody as a variant of I got a Feeling, blended in with pieces of the melody to Something. In-between the verses where there is an obvious interim where you expect Paul or John or both to sing " OH YEAH"....but they don't. Its kind of a tension that never happens. Then there is a submelody that gets interjected that is a piano melody that slowly plays a line that sounds like a part of The Long and Winding Road and morphs into the end part of Let It Be. Meanwhile you still have the main melody of I got a Feeling still ever-present but subtle. Then it sort of abandons all of the above melodies for the NEW melody that is " Watching Rainbows" . This part of the song could've easily stood on its own without the homage to the above mentioned melodies. The voal effects on John's voice are something that was never used on his voice before. It is something of a wide chorus effect and an echo. What is unique with this effect is that the echo is NOTHING like what's used in Come Together, Sttawberry Fields, Ballad of John/ Yoko. I wish they'd discovered this beautiful vocal effect for use on John's voice for other songs. It would have been great if they used it on A Day in the Life for example instead of the echo/ reverb being predominant in the foreground vocals of a Day in the Life. From what the engineers state they pieced together, could've been a great song had the Beatles completed it. Its sort of like Schubert's Unfinished Symphony being completed by another composer using original works interweaved with Schubert's previous works. This song had so much potential for a John Lennon tune reminiscent of Lucy in the Sky psychedelia, BUT COMING DOWN off the LSD ride! This is just my thoughts and opinion on this potential masterpiece that was never realized.
@@gvgv3515 I can't hear any effectsat all on the Lennon vocals - it sounds completely dry to me, just coming through the Twickenham PA.
@@davecostello560 I'm watching the you tube video of the song with the two gentlemen who discuss the 150+ hours of recordings they had to go through to get a viable song assembled from various out takes. As the video progresses the verse leading into the chorus has the vocal effects which I can only say is similar to those used for the song Rain. Less flanger effect but more chorus. I will have to rewatch the video and see what the time code is and where you hear the vocal effect. I definitely hear it on my phone as I watch the video, it is not dry at all. I will get back to you.
@@gvgv3515 ah ok I think I get you - you're talking about their own recorded version of the different elements. This wasn't John Lennon singing, this was the two gentlemen recording their own version. Maybe that vocal had some studio effects on.
just beautiful words escape me, its so lovely god bless them for giving us so much happiness
Couldn't agree more.
And It makese think that Beatles 've been very luky to meet .you are a talented msocian

Yeah yeah yeah I heard it too.
Brilliant, another beautiful mix masterpiece for history!
Thank you!
Thanks God I reach for this second part. It was just sweet.
You are welcome
Very nice. I always thought it would be more a rough song in stead of a polished one. But I do like this version very much. Good job.
Really sounds like I’ve got a feeling
Yeah its like an alternate universe version.
Very true
Isn't it I've Got A Feeling? Or rather John looking for words for his part of it? I mean it sure seems exactly like it and they were coming up with that song during these sessions. As far as I can tell, this is them in the middle of writing that song.
Oh very good song, I like
Beatles are so far and away the greatest musical band of all time. It’s not even close.
Wowzers 🙏👌💙
Nothing wrong with this. Classical composers went back to complete Beethoven's last unfinished symphony (the 10th).
Oddly, parts of this reminds me a bit of Sublime's "What I Got" - especially their line "I can play the guitar like a mofo riot", Which is also a really good song. The best they ever wrote.
You boys are doing the Lord's work. People have been covering and re-interpreting other people's songs forever. Why not cover and reinterpret unreleased songs and fragments, indeed. This is so fascinating. Well done.
Thanks, Jeffrey. Too kind.
Honestly that’s an awesome idea! I’d love to see more people tackle the lesser known aspects of the Beatles history? I wonder if a similar thing could be done for Lennon’s unfinished solo songs
Brilliant!
Love the song.
It is so cool that you share your mental experiment using Beatles musical tapestry to create an alternate universe experience out of this. Thank you from all of this who only can wish we were as able to do the same and for enrichening our dreams!
As a lifelong Beatlemaniac, this is stella work! Well done guys, keep it up
Thanks, ADS!
Amazing
It did become a masterpiece - I've Got A Feeling is one of their very greatest late era classics!
Not really, just a solid rock song.
The quality as a group was super greater than themselves individually.
That was incredible
Awesome job, finishing this song!! It is so easy to dismiss an outtake or early demo, because of it's simplicity or bareness. But, you took this raw demo, which I had heard many times over the years, and really breathed life into it, giving it a whole new dimension. You have an amazing knack for showing your viewers/listeners what could have been.
Thank you so much!
Great job! Feels like a Beatles song!
Magnifique !
That "woo ooh ooh" is freakin: fantastic
Thanks! Inspired by Lennon’s “cupcake baby yeah yeah” bit.
@@almostbeatlessongs Beautiful! John was SUCH a hook machine. His adlibs seem to always feel like seeds for new songs.
Awesome. As someone with grandsons that are the same age as the Beatles were when fame hit them; I feel sad for them. They were so young to have so many expectations put upon them. And to have access to every negative thing in life. They had such incredible talent and such fun characters that it was easy for us as fans to essentially suck them dry.
Awesome job ! This gave me chills and brought me back to the days of waiting with baited breath for their next masterpiece ! This abdolutley does that for me ! A BIG THANKYOU !

" Creativity and fun and asking what if ".......beautiful man. That's what the Beatles are......to me... 😉 🙏
Thanks, Jason!
That was lovely
From the start of John’s clip it was clear this was I’ve Got A Feeling in unfinished form. This re-working was pleasant enough, but to my mind it is already a finished song and has been since 1969.
It's similar but it's a different song, a brother or sister song if you will. You can tell from some of the sections in this recreation..
I've Got a Feeling's main part was Paul's and John added the "Everybody had a Hard Year" part so maybe John felt that his song was inferior to Paul's and since they had this fixation to not record similar songs he abandoned it. I'm pretty certain that if someone found their home recordings there would be many abandoned "masterpieces" that sounded a little like Penny Lane or I am the Walrus...
Check out John Lennon's I Know, I know, he likes those chords. ruclips.net/video/B0ADfz30LjY/видео.html
It was clear it was an improvisation with an original melody that bear no resemblance to "I've Got A Feeling" other than a chord structure that it share with thousands of other songs. You are tone deaf boomer.
I agree this sounds like a jam permutation of the same song. Lyrically there might be more Lennon in this version.

Fantastic
What a great cover and this is the first time I hear this song. One could just Imagine if Paul, George and Ringo would of done a full album with Free As A Bird, Real Love, Now and Then, and of course this tune. It would have been a great dedication album to the fans and The Beatles. I know without John there is no Beatles but they could of done a sort of tribute, but anyways great rendition to this unofficial masterpiece which could have or would of been a sure #1 as it sounded very much like a single for it’s time, a transition to the 70s kinda like Harrison’s All Things Must Pass.
Another cool one here to add to that list. A rocking version of Across the Universe by Mental Pictures ruclips.net/video/cEozPQIzfV0/видео.html

I can imagine them coming up with it all themselves that’s the freaky thing about it mainly because it’s of their making anyway ( in essence ) . Well done. Excellence actually!! As said, I love it.
I'm a bit of a Beatles student. I've always felt that Watching Rainbows was an alternate counter melody to I've Got a Feeling. Each part that you highlight can fit in the "Everybody had a hard year" lyric.
A strong sign that I'm right would be if Paul introduced the song to the band, but the 'hard year-good time' lyric of John's was either brand new, or not submitted yet.
The audio documentation is there - the historians can bear this out.
I thought the same thing.
It feels quite apparent that this is just John throwing out words for his bit on I've Got A Feeling until he hits on something he likes so he can run with that. I mean, it's pretty much one of the tried and true techniques to writing songs, go back and forth
I - IV - I - IV, start coming up with melodies and stuff. It seems a little weird to pretend that this is anything other than that. To me.
@@dggydddy59 I agree 100%.
@@dggydddy59 Exactly.
I was a 13 yr old when they came to USA and have loved them ever since. At the time Paul was my favorite. Both of their names being on the songs as the writers, begged the question, how do John and Paul decide who should be the singer. The answer was whoever did the majority of the writing would be the singer. That makes a lot of sense to me. So I would say since Paul sang lead in I've Got a Feeling, he wrote most of it. In "Watching Rainbons" I think John would have sang that.
I have been a Beatles fan for 45 years. I completely accept all these new recordings from the Nagra Reels as new Beatles songs. I feel very receptive to all of them. No complaints whatsoever! In the future they can do the same with unfinished McCartney songs. They should digitalize all McCartney vocals between 1964 and 1990 so we can keep enjoying new songs performed by the man himself...
That could be interesting for sure. Thx for watching!
