When I take breaks I get sucked into a rabit hole of distractions. Then i start telling myself that if i dont do tasks it will not be the end of my life. Or "Ill just skip out on this one, its just one task" and i end up feeling drowsy and unmotivated. I am really trying to get rid of this habit because I used to be the most productive person i know. And now even my health is changing.

Been there too! It feels very unmotivating especially when I end my day not being productive. What worked for me was to break my tasks into smaller ones so that I won't get overwhelmed by the work it requires and gives me much clarity around easier ways to accomplish it. Hoping that all is doing well with you.

I really enjoy the idea of the Pomodoro Technique, but whenever I apply it and then begin doing those distracting tasks like getting on my phone or watching a video I tend to then get sucked into the rabbit hole and it's difficult for me to continue working. I found that whenever I still take the break but do something a little bit more productive and less distracting like stretching or going for a walk that I am much more likely to return to the work and not get distracted.

If you have the temptation during a session to be distracted, write it down on a piece of paper, and come back to it later. Alternatively, use apps such as Freedom or Cold Turkey Blockers to block distracting apps and websites for a set period of time so that you stay on task. These are apps are not entirely free, but are worth the investment.

I’m sure you speak for a lot of people, including myself, I’ve been working on this, because a walk or yoga, for me, isn’t the same as a good book on the kindle, or a quick video on RUclips.
In order to still feel that passionate reward that my phone or other electronics offers, I’ve started practicing my phone use habits outside of these “allotted” breaks. My thought is, if I don’t allow myself to get sucked in too deep when Im using my phone outside of these break times, then I won’t be sucked in when I need to get back to work during a break time. So far, it seems to be working really well, I’d highly recommend it.

This might not be related to the topic. I am not a productive person, however success is what I would want in the future. I am a car enthusiast, however hearing about all the news about self driving/electric cars makes me sad. I don't want electric cars and self driving technology. I want cars to stay like they are right now. So I am thinking why would I want to become successful if I can't enjoy it. So in my mind I think that what is the point of success if I won't be able to enjoy it. And that is what keeps me away from becoming productive. Knowing that something that I dream about is going to be gone in the future (which is driving a proper car) I keep thinking to myself why do I need success when I won't be able to enjoy it. So yeah, I am not a productive person and I hope that this won't happen, then maybe my motivation is going to change. I am not saying that you guys should stay on the negative side. Always stay positive and think positive. That can make you more motivated and help you become more productive to achieve your success!!!

I can relate to this! That's where the importance of habit-building comes in. Majority of our actions on a given day are based on our habits. If creating a productive habit isn't really what we used to do, it's very easy to lose motivation the day after because our minds are not programmed to do such things. What I do is use the 2 minute rule and start with a productive activity that's VERY easy to do that I can't say no. works everytime! :)

The Pomodoro technique is effective when you do the breaks correctly. When you decide to take a break, don't go on your phone or device for the break. At least for me, it always used to make me less productive as 5 minutes breaks or more turned even longer until I wasn't working anymore. Stretch, drink water, and take a walk or something that can distract you.

@@rafalvarezsevilla I second that. Blaming other things for your own negative personal traits is just a way to give yourself an excuse for the fact that you are not as productive as you could be. I don't even have to question that the virus impacted many people in a bad way, but you have to realise that you are unproductive because of the way you look at the situation and not because of the situation itself. The situation is out of our hands, but our perception of it is not. We can change that. If you try your best to adapt your previous livestyle to the situation, it is likely that you will realise that the virus is just keeping you down, instead of making it impossible to be productive.

You definitely can't take time out to daydream when you are bound to a deadline and have too much to do, like having studied next to nothing and having your finals in 3 days. Which is exactly my situation right now.

The good news is you don't have to follow everything that you hear from people. I suggest make a schedule that fits your "prime time" or the hours that you're really focused and productive. It doesn't have to be early in the morning. Feel free to experiment! :)

It's important to include the issues that women as mothers have. They struggle with young children for the majority of each and everyday and have difficulties with interruption, sleep deprivation, and inability to self-meditate effectively. Others have similar issues with other aspects of their lives that impact their ability to attain personal time.

    5. Rewards. Cost lots of money and can make you fat and depressed.
Important to find rewards like fun friend/family time.
Maybe I can convince my firends to do the same, and when one of us achieves their goals, the other ones 'reward' their achievements; maybe it would lead to seeking validation all the time though....... :(
My rewards for the moment will be a nap or a coffee break.

Something will work. You can't give up.
You kinda seem like me, and if you really are, then you aren't actually trying those techniques because you're expecting them to fail, and finding excuses to not being able to use those techniques properly. I know, I do that a lot. Just try those out with the belief that they'll work, and they will. Like the guy said, Belief is a big thing. If you actually believe that you can, you boost your chances to be able to do it.

@@hamasaadwn Heh. Happens to me a lot.
One simple thing, make sure to follow the first thing in that list. Waking up at a time that makes you feel refreshed.
And most important: Bathing as soon as you wake up. Or anytime when you feel tired and lethargic, or inactive.
It's something I always skip out on, and I know it's something that makes you feel more eager to tackle all your stuff. And when I am forced to bath, afterwards I realise how good of an idea it was and feel more active.
Once you start your day refreshed, you'll feel better throughout the whole day.
And another more important thing: Don't ruin your mood as soon as you wake up. Keep away from any kind of bad news, any berating or anything that might cause negativity first thing in the morning.
For me, every day that began with mom's anger raining down on me goes extremely lethargic and depressed, which is extremely common cuz she can't seem to like me very much, while her scolding me on any other times doesn't lessen my productivity.
Combine that with the bathing thing I just told you, and you'll feel much more productive than you normally do.
