I REEEALLLY wanna be drum major, but I’m not in loading crew or anything, but I’m soooo passionate about marching band. The drum major auditions aren’t till April, and I wanted to get a super head start so I’m positive I’ll make it for my sophomore year. I’m always participating and I’m a SUPER loud person. I hope I get it 😣
Im so excited for drum major tryouts in march. My brother was drum major for three years and was head drum major for his senior year. I really wanna make it for him and myself, because it really satisfies me. I do cheer for high school as well so it would be awesome to make drum major :)
Thanks for this video. I’m thinking about auditioning in my senior year, August next school year, for drum major and this really helps put it all into perspective.
I'm so happy you made this video. I got the idea of becoming one of three drum majors for next year's marching band about a month ago and I recently locked in on the idea. I have been building relationships with the current drum majors and they have said they will help prepare me to be amongst them. I've also been working a lot harder this year with my show music, as our show is apparently the hardest my high school has ever had. I'm only a sophomore and I was in the freshman marching band last year, so there's not much to compare to varsity marching band. I'm so excited to begin the process to take on band leadership and I'm thankful you've created such helpful resources. Thank you.
I’m just going to be a freshman now but I’ve started learning marching with marching band and there’s normally around 4 other drum majors so I think it would be cool to try and really show me if being a band teacher is my real dream job
Thanks for this so much!! Our band's drum major is graduating this year and I think I want to tryout even though I am only in 7th grade and that's when our highschool band starts.
Becoming Drum Major is a really big goal of mine that I want to achieve this next year. I am always told by my friends that I am the definition of a band kid. I LOVE band. I'm always trying to help out when I can, join any crews that do tasks for the band, but this past marching band year I was rejected from all of those positions even though I had done them the year before (except for section leader). Even though I haven't been in any leadership positions this year, I am practicing months in advance for this drum major audition and am hopeful that any work I have been trying to do has not gone unnoticed, and will help me achieve my goal.
I am still new in my band, and i play the side drum/ snare drum, and i want to get this position in band, but the thing is, i am not good with the snare drum, i practice but the other snare drummers are wayy better then me, and well lets just say that this video lifted my spirits on my hopes of being a drum major, so thanks, people often give me the look that me being drum major is a joke so yeah, thank you, i cant thank you enough here,
My name is Ainsley and I’m from Kentucky and I’m a sophomore in high school about to be a junior and I’m in my high school marching band program and I’m auditioning for the drum major position and at my school we have the clinic learning the conducting patterns and the calls for the band and the tempos with the music and different types of styles of conducting and then there is a separate day for the actual audition and you have to choose a slot and you get interviewed and then you have to apply everything that you have learned into your audition and you have to be in the the band for at least two years or more to audition
I submitted my audition on Saturday, there’s only 1/2 spots open so I’m nervous lol. I’ve always tried to be helpful to my band director though, I’ve helped him put up/take down things like bulletin boards multiple times
My audition is in 2 days. I was the feature soloist in this years show. I'll be a junior next year. I was also the only person of my class to make our schools top bands as a freshman. I also was in all state. Our current DM is graduating and our BD asked me to audition for drum major and thinks I would be a great leader and DM. Do you think I'll get it? Ive never conducted before
My marching season is over and I'm a freshman but the band director has been talking to me about auditioning for drum major next year. Should I? edit: Hi I just wanted to say thank you for the amazing advice because I made drum major for my sophomore year!!! Thank you!!!
Hi!! I’d also like to audition for drum major next year… I was wondering how you got to that point where the band director started talking to you about being drum major?
I haven’t had a leadership position before but I plan on auditioning for next year. I’m worried that I haven’t put myself out there and that I won’t be a good leader. I keep being reminded about natural leadership but I don’t think I have that. I think my directors see me more as a section leader than anything big. I don’t know how to change that as I’ve been volunteering and trying my best. I’m just an awkward person in general, but I’ve dreamed of the position since 7th grade.
Aye man keep your head up high. Whenever you feel like you won't be something you want to be, just think of why you wanted to be in that position in the first place and use that as your drive to be the best you can be. Good luck!
Drum major is the conductor for the marching band. The name drum major can be a little misleading because you don't actually play the drums, or any percussion for that matter. It's almost like you're taking over for the band director. Instead of them on the podium, it's you. Pretty cool!
This video was so helpful with my audition earlier this year, now I'm a drum major!
Yooooo! Congrats!

Find a way to volunteer or join a crew! Take ownership of something!
did u make it?

Good luck! Be sure to always keep your main motivation as service to the program. Family legacy is nice and all, but that alone won't win you the gig!

I'm planning on auditioning and this video helped me alot !

I'm assuming this video to some extent applies to those going for section leader or cosection leader?
Bingo
Im a freshman at bhs this year and I play tuba and I've been watching your vids to see how everything used to be lol
I can’t imagine it’s too different!

Very good information, but these were literally all things I had going for me. Conducting is my biggest weakness right now 😬
Thank you very helpful.
No problem Trevor! Good luck!
What is a drum major is it like a conductor, and do you have to play percussion

u basically conduct the band, and I think its called drum major because the drums have to follow the drum majors
