While attaching the green grounding wire to the side of the recessed can, it won’t screw tightly, rather just sits there. Is this ok or does it need to be screwed tightly?
Thank you for your question. The green ground screw should be secured completely to the side of the recessed can. If you are having an issue with the ground screw attaching properly, please send an email to contact Westinghouse Lighting Consumer Support Division for assistance at consumersupport@westinghouselighting.com
Nice instructions, i but when I took the recessed light trim out, the lightbulb socket also comes with the trim. Does this support that model of recessed light?
Hi Raja - thank you for your question. We would be happy to help you determine if our product works for your specific application. If you would like our assistance, please email us at consumersupport@westinghouselighting.com and include some photos of your trim and recessed can (if possible) so we can best assist you. Thank you!
@@Westinghouselighting actually it was a socket mounted on the trim, so I removed and then finally fixedflush mount in it. Canlight was little deep than the ceiling level though. It got bit tricky. Thanks for the response.
Thank you for your interest in our product. The Recessed Light Converter attaches to the round recessed light housing. Therefore, it is compatible with square recessed lighting.
Thank you for your inquiry and interest in our products. You cannot install a ceiling fan with the recessed light converter, item 0101100. Unfortunately, we do not offer a recessed light converter kit that can be used with a ceiling fan.
Jen S Jen - There are many different cans from different manufacturers in the market. There is variation in the material thickness and composition of the cans. While there are many cans that the self-piercing screws will go right through, there are some cans that do require a pilot hole. Could you let us know what make of recessed can you have? We would like to look into this further? Thank you.
This worked perfectly for two of our three can lights. However, the 3rd can light has a small lip around the bottom, so there is nowhere to put the grounding wire clip. what is the best alternative placement? Should we drill a hole in the side of the can light for the grounding wire clip?
Thank you for contacting us. The wire clip is designed to be installed on the rim of the recessed can because this ensures the adjustable channel brace and ultimately the light fixture is properly grounded to the can. In addition this is the easiest place to attach the ground clip because this step is performed after the installation of the adjustable channel brace. That being said, it is possible to attach the ground clip to another metal part of the recessed can provided you can safely reach it and secure it tightly. Some examples of alternative mounting locations are: slots or holes in the side of the can or permanently affixed metal flanges accessible inside the can. Please note the ground clip must be attached to the recessed can, if you have any question or doubt please contact a qualified electrician versed in your local electrical and building codes.
Thanks for your interest in the Recessed Light Converter. Unfortunately we do not make a Converter that is applicable to Square Recessed Lights at this time.
Hello: the recessed can should not have pre-drilled holes. Per the included instructions, the consumer will need to follow the instructions and will need to drill these holes in order to install the mounting bracket. We also have a video about the self piercing screws, that you can watch here: m.ruclips.net/video/JeIAR1h2ICo/видео.html If you are not familiar with how to install the recessed light converter, we recommend to contact your local electrician for assistance. Thanks!
Hello! Do you have to use the metal flat plate and the white plate/decorative ring (don’t know the technical name) that sits flush with the ceiling? I’m interested in doing this but the pendant light I want to install has its own base that I’m not sure will cover and conceal the metal plate. Am I able to just install the brackets and forgo the plates to just put the light flush with the ceiling with nothing around it? Maybe need to send a customer service email with a photo to better explain what I mean. Thank you!
Do you sell just the two parts for fitting inside the light fixture. I have a very old 4 3/4 Thompson eyeball recessed light converting to pendants. Is that a special order I could do. These 5 lights are on a slopped mid century ceiling.
Hello: We do not separately sell the parts that are included in our recessed light converter. The parts included in our kit are intended to be used together for the installation of our recessed light converter. Thanks!
Hello: If you would like assistance with your question, you can reach out to our Consumer Support team at consumersupport@westinghouselighting.com. Thank you!
I have two 8" square recessed lights. Can I use this kit to convert those lights to flush mounts LED lights? The opening is 8" across. If not this kit, is there another kit that can bridge that 8" opening so I can convert to flush mount LED lighting?
Hi Bob - Unfortunately our Recess Light Converter only works on recess cans that are between 4” and 6” in diameter. Our kit would not work in your suggested application.
Hello: Follow the instructions listed on the fixture being installed. Please note: Underwriters Laboratories (UL) does not require all fixtures to have ground wires, the additional bare copper wire is provided for use with fixtures that do require a ground connection. If your specific fixture does not require a ground connection the bare copper wire is not needed. Thank you!
Hi Darill, Thanks for your interest in our Recessed Light Converter. Unfortunately we do not make a converter that is applicable for square recessed lights at this time, nor do we have a video for installing a ceiling fan onto a square recessed light.
Holy crap! That was an F'ing mess! Trying to install pendant lights in existing can lights and it took me 2 hours to do one light! The existing can enclosures were not flush to the inclined ceiling. Had to undo 3 screws to "Force" them more level to the ceiling. Then the pendant fixture bracket mounting screws jammed against the right and left side of the converter bracket forcing me to use a needle nose pliers to unscrew this past the side screws for the ground and other side. Then, the metal plate won't line up right. Then, the plastic medallion won't line up right. Looks horrible. Going to the lighting store I purchased the pendants from and buying their converter.
Hi Jeff, We’re sorry to hear that you had trouble with our Recessed Light Converter. Our product is designed to mount a standard pendant mounting bracket, and - as with all converter systems - it’s important that the can is flush. If you ever need our assistance, you can always contact us via our website (westinghouselighting.com).
My can is like exactly 4" in diameter... So I had to cut down the big sliding bracket about 1/2 inch on each part so I could get them to just barely fit. A real pain... But I can't find any other product on the market for anything less than 4". Anyone else having trouble to force these to fit?
Beware, If your pendant has a sconce that doesn't cover the silver disc, you're stuck looking at the disc or the clumsy white cover they give you. Neither are good trade offs. This is good for flush mounts, not pendants😢
Why won't the self tapping screws go in to my can? I have tried and tried but they won't even get started. And yes, I am sure my drill is going the correct direction :)
Thank you for contacting us. Sorry you are having trouble with the self-piercing screws. We have tested them on both aluminum and steel cans, without any problems. Some of the possible causes for not piercing the can is that not enough torque is generated by the drill. Are you using a cordless drill? Check and see if it is completely charged? If the answer to that is yes, here are a few other suggestions: You can try using a plug-in drill (they have more torque)? Also If you have a ¼” hex driver it holds the screw better allowing you to put more weight behind it. If all else fails, you can drill a pilot hole (1/16” or 1/8” diameter) into the side wall of the can to get the screw started. Please let us know if this helps.
Thank you. Yes, I ended up trying to drill a pilot hole but for some reason, this can is impenetrable by normal means. I went and bought some titanium bits and wallah, pilot hole drilled. Screws went in like a champ after that. Installed the brace and the light is now installed. Had a bit of a time getting the pigtail connection in far enough to make an electrical contact. Not sure what my house was built with, but seems "non standard" was the theme. Regardless, it's now working. Thanks for this option for can lights and thanks for responding.
Hello, Sorry that our Recessed Light Converter isn’t a fit for you. We don’t have plans to add any other sizes at this time, but please tell us more about where you wanted to use it. Is this a commercial application?
Hi, Thank you for getting back to me! I need it for my house. I have several recessed ccfl lights that I'm converting to LEDs. Looking for a bracket and find Westinghouse has this great product, just not in my size! Hope you have a plan to make different sizes, which I believe is not that difficult.
This video is deceptive and therefore not helpful. The self piercing screws often won't penetrate the can. This common problem and the solution should be mentioned.
Terrible materials. The screw to keep the bracket lined up is too small. You have to angle the screw so the head can stay on top of the bracket or else it’s small enough to fall through each piece. Self tapping screws are awful. Even with a fully charged impact driver, the screws wouldn’t even makes dent.
Amazing! Just what I wanted for my bathrooms, converting 2 old heat lamps with flush mounted lights. So much more modern.
🙏🏿 installing video was a lifesaver…
Excellent how to video. I'm going to buy 3 if these converter kits. Thank you

I had the same problem… The ground wire will bottom out before it attaches tightly to the side of the can.
Thank you for video well done..to the point!Im.needing to replace a recessed light, and this was very helpful!
Glad to hear it was helpful for you!
This is the best thing ever.
This looks so easy I can do it.
What exactly is the purpose of the metal disk? Do you even need that?

Jeff, having the same trouble with the screws not going in. I will try a pilot hole.

A Master Electrician should know this fact. Perhaps not all DIY would know this.
Is there a solution then?
Hi Liz,
Here's a video that may answer your question about self-piercing screws: ruclips.net/video/JeIAR1h2ICo/видео.html
I had the exact same issues! The screw head isn’t wide enough to hold it tight nor did the self piercing screws actually work.
Why are these manufacturer videos so cheezy? Half of the time they can't even point the camera properly; the hand covers some of the important views.
